Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

So if the final ones are Dante, Geno, Incineroar and Ken then we'd end up with 71 characters base but if counting echos then 77.

Edit: Make that 78 if Shadow is in.

Are people seriously going on about Ken, Incineroar, Dante, and Geno are the only ones left?
Does Shadow just not exist anymore?

I found this funny fan art of Isabelle on Tumblr, just thought of sharing it in here:

All those people hoping the character that'd get revealed would disconfirm all the typical/popular picks must be salty as hell right now lmao

The next weeks are gonna be people arguing about Vergeben validity and if Skull kid is gonna be a boss or not.

"If you were to actually think about it, these characters are just functions. They're just doing things. Magneto, case and point, is a favorite because he has eight-way dash and he's really fast, right? Well guess what, Nova can do the same thing, Captain Marvel can do the same thing. Ultron can do the same thing. It's just the function that people are associating with the character, and there's no shortage of that. We made sure that all proper playstyles can be represented with our current roster."

Too easy.
I non-ironically agreed with what Combofiend was saying there. Magneto was one of the best traditional Marvel movesets, but Ultron was a very fair replacement and was definitely a highlight of MvCI. I didn't mind that dynamic; characters come and go, and it's silly to be salty over that. The statement isn't a good way to sell games to casuals, but if you're a competitive with a long memory of a lot of different fighting game sequels wherein very different rosters just happened sometimes (like Street Fighter 3), it really did help you see that someone on the inside at least was thinking logically about making the game good with new characters.

MvCI was a disappointing game for a few reasons for me, mostly because Capcom wimped out and did some really nasty kneejerk nerfs early in its lifespan (there was no excuse for what they did to Reality Gem's frame data, just pandering to bad players who whined about it) but also because I didn't think the "switch constantly" dynamic of gameplay was actually as fun as the MvC3 model anyway since it tended to make gameplay more of a same-ish mush no matter which characters you wanted to play. I also felt like MvCI just was a very... unintuitive game for lack of a better way to put it. I had to think so hard about my inputs in that game since the way things worked just didn't make intuitive sense; I could understand it but just had to memorize everything since the gameplay was plain unnatural. I would have still liked it as a side game if not for the kneejerk nerfs, but combine the things I already wasn't really enjoying with the dumb nerfs and I felt no regrets dropping that game super hard.

It's actually pretty much the opposite of Smash which is hyper intuitive and has massive gameplay variety really. It would really be very hard for Smash Ultimate to disappoint me; it just has to be what it already seems to be and I'm super happy with it.

Are we just assuming Dante is in now?

ok.
Well from what I hear. It's pretty legit since the person that posted Devil May Cry content was the same with Smash or something before deleting. At least that's how the details go.

I for one won't mind Dante but felt there would had been better choices but hey those that wants him in and if he does. Good on you. ;)

What's to say we can't get info in October? Maybe a sudden character trailer like Robin and Lucina.
Anything is possible.
That's kind of what I'm thinking. I don't see them fitting 3 unique newcomers alongside Ken and any remaining echoes in a final smash direct.

My own thoughts are Gen 7 Pokemon in a random trailer in October, and then the SE character & Dante/Microsoft character bookending the final direct, with an echo montage in the middle coming in November.

I feel like Dante is an absolutely ridiculous choice, but it is a leak which still lives.

Is it true? **** if I know. Is it still possible? Yes, just keep your eye on it, can't count Dante out just yet.

I remember during smash 4s era, when we’d get a character I didn’t like and I’d say I’m not hyped about it, everyone would say “get over it”

So...get over it guys.

Yeah, even though it's only juuuuust above the level of the Richter/Gardevoir/Gothitelle leak.

I'd be down for Dante, Gardevoir and Gothitelle but something's off to me here.

I can't wrap my head around Ebony and Ivory getting in, especially in their original state where they're ordinary, if fancy pistols.

Dunno, 5 echoes and 8 unique newcomers seem like something to be expected from a game that will focus more on having everyone than on new characters.

My serious, 100% opinion is that we're going to get a one-off newcomer trailer in October, similar in vein to Robin and Lucina's, and then a Smash direct with two new chars and a few echoes in November. Then a huge maybe on a newcomer reveal in December, right before the game launches. No idea on who would be revealed, but in my opinion, with what characters people are deeming likely now, I'd see it as something like this:

October: Incineroar/Gen 7, maybe a possible echo reveal to coincide with the similarity to the Robin/Lucina trailer, in this case I think it'd be Ken, who might be shown fighting Incineroar in the trailer
November: Shadow could be one of the new echoes, or he could end up being an Isabelle-style partial clone, or end up being a completely unique fighter. Who knows at this point, Isabelle's throwing me for a loop. I think he is still likely for a potential November direct.
Aside from Shadow, I also feel at this point that Dante is pretty likely. And with one of the two anons explicitly saying that he's for November, I'm inclined to put him here.
If Shadow does end up being an echo, then I think the other character revealed could be Isaac, IF Geno is in. If Geno isn't in, then it might end up being the reveal of the "SE rep" from Verge's leak.
No idea for December. I'm inclined to say Geno if he's in, since he would be pretty fitting for a final reveal to cap off the pre-release hype season.

If Street Fighter got a second unique fighter it better be Chun Li or Sakurai gonna catch these hands.

Or not because I'm really quite peaceful and I can't imagine punching anyone let alone Sakurai, a man I have great respect for.

If there is a pokemon direct in October, I can totally see Sakurai letting them reveal the Gen 7 rep. Its the best way to do it imo.

So does anyone still think Skull Kid has any chances in making the cut?
I never got on the Skull Kid train to begin with. I personally believe the en mass Skull Kid support didn't occur until someone thought chairs was a good reason to say he's in. He's just up there because of him being MIA. I mean, it could be Devil who became playable for ****'s sake.

I made my favorite part of the reveal trailer into a gif so I figured I'd share it. I'm sure there's a ton of meme potential to be had here.
Someone already made some adorable fan art of this moment!!
(which I shamelessly snatched for my avatar)

Frankly, after looking at the Isabelle trailer a few more times, then just watching the gameplay footage without the introduction. I think the biggest issue was the trailer failed to sell me on the concept because of how disjointed it was. Generally smash trailers including build up to a character reveal, reveal the character, then provide game play to sell the character concept.

These aspects are important especially with characters that aren't traditional fighters because it more difficult to put them in an action situation.. I think back to the Wii Fit Trainer introduction.

1) It displays a few moments of Wii Fit to create the illusion that it is a Wii Fit video
2) Pulls away to reveal Mario, KIrby, and Link doing the exercise.
3) Wii Fit Trainer appears for a few moments to let the audience register what's going on before she launches the three away.
4) Quick bursts of Gameplay to sell the concept.

I think the big thing the Isabelle trailer does wrong is the built up and the focus on the one scene for so long. There is too much dialogue and drawn out discussion. Frankly, you probably could of just cut to the receiving the mail part and cut out the first half of the whole introduction. During the direct I couldn't immediately follow what was going on so by the time the tagline and gameplay started my mind had already drifted away from what was displayed as such it didn't register in my mind the same way most Smash Trailers generally do.

After watching the gameplay without the drawn out sequences I definitely can see and understand the character better. I know that kind of pace IS what Animal Crossing is but I'm not sure it was the best way to approach a Smash trailer.

Shadow is looking even more likely now imo. They can base him off of Sonic the same way Isabelle is based off of Villager but completely change some of the moves to chaos abilities.
You could also argue Tails got a boost from Isabelle too though. Isabelle is yet another Mii costume that got upgraded. And you could have an Echo Shadow along with a Semi-Cloned Tails. (Heck, If Dixie is in as a Semi-Clone too. Combine Sonic's moveset with Dixie's recovery and you have Tails right there)

Personally yes. He's still missing as an assist trophy and was seemingly given a replacement in the Moon. Kapp'n clearly replace Isabelle for example.

It's not a given, but it's still a likelihood.

Isaac is the one I worry more about. Outside of that possible teaser with the Rathalos picture. Isaac even missed out on Smash 4 as an assist trophy.

Its soooo weird how when I think about the character, I feel nothing, but when I think about her fans that wanted her, I get happy and feel warmth.

This is empathy? I don't like it...

I can't see them making a fighter-sized character a boss unless it fights just like a normal fighter.

In which case, it would also be playable.
I think your problem here is making an assumption about what they can or can't do. Imagining arbitrary limitations to gameplay like "small characters can't be bosses" never works out well for Smash speculators. If Sakurai thinks Skull Kid should be a boss, he'll find a way to figure it out. He can literally do anything. It's honestly not that hard.

Only pattern still alive in the Assist Trophy and Costume theory. If anything this helps Skull Kid more than ever.
