Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Classic Namco music has always been tied to Pac-Man. This is how it was for Smash Bros Wii U. The Wii Fit Studio stage had Nintendogs and Brain Age music in there for it has been a catch all for Nintendo's more casual games.
I mean still, you’re making assumptions to further prove your point, which ironically just goes further from it because there’s no actual evidence to prove otherwise.

You’re grasping Smash, really far.

If a series already has music on the site, they aren't getting any completely new characters. This means no Skull Kid, Waddle Dee, or Geno. Echoes are fair game.

At least, that's how I interpret it.
Nah, they just won't be getting new music added. Which only means something for this very specific moment.

I agree with Galaga, but Snipperclips will probably be Pictochat or something, probably in "Others".

Now, the weird part is knowing if Culdcept will be considered Punch-Out music (and Baten Kaitos Xenoblade music...)

Just going off of what's happening this week: We're missing 134-136, 140-141, and 143-145.

134-136 are believed to be connected to the newcomer we were supposed to get with the direct last week, which have been done in blocks of two or three (the third being if they get a memory). Due to the delay, we got no blog posts at the end of last week, so they were believed to be skipped, and starting this week we noticed that the blog posts were clearly shifted around thanks to Toon Link's and Bowser's likely confirming our suspicions. 140-141 are the updates that would follow Toon Link's, but would come before Bowser's, but since the latter was moved forward they've gone unaccounted for the time being. Finally, 143-145 would be the updates that followed Bowser, but came before the Pikmin music, but again the music was switched around so they also have gone unaccounted for.

On top of 134-136 going MIA, the music update is very interesting in that one of 140-141 should've been the music update for this week, but it's switched out for next week's song (which is Pikmin). This implies that the music update was intended to be connected to the newcomer in question, and once the direct got delayed that meant the music had to be delayed as well.
Aren't we missing 137 too? It doesn't add up correctly Toon Link is only two updates so 138 & 139.

I imagine this was the plan.
Thursday 9/6
134,135,136 - Newcomer, Trailer, Memory

Sunday 9/9
137 - Newcomer Stage/Echo Fighter

Monday 9/10
138,139 - Toon Link, Memory

Tuesday 9/11
140 - Newcomer Song
141 - Other Update (Item/AT/Pokemon/Stage)

Wednesday 9/12
142 - Bowser

Thursday 9/13
143 - Item or Something

Sunday 9/16
144 - Character

Monday 9/17
145 - Stage or Something

Tuesday 9/18
146 - Pikmin Music
Honestly some of that is cutting in close, a couple character updates with no memories, seems odd to me.

what's this music theory that will probably get BTFO'ed in the near future?
I'll explain

Basically, people have noticed that the website adds music for the series in Smash Ultimate and so far, there isn't any overlap. Also, each of the main newcomers have gotten music soon after their reveal. The most obvious were K Rool and Simon who got music right after their reveal (Castlevania the day of and DK the following week). With this, you can predict the newcomers. It doesn't seem to apply to echos.

This is predicated on the fact that there are enough series to fill out the remaining weeks. At most, it proves that there is at least one new series if not two since there is only about 10-11 series left as some series wont get music (like Game and Watch)

I honestly don't expect any human-sized boss fights. I think there's a reason Smash Brothers has always preferred gigantic characters to serve as boss fights. You can already fight as against smaller characters whenever you feel like, so making bosses huge is a way to make them stand out as, well, bosses.

Having Skull Kid or Shadow would be a little bit of a waste. We'd be way more likely to get Majora or Robotnik in a mech as bosses instead.

137 is Bowser according to my notes. Where did you find 142 from?

I'm not sure why people are getting all pessimistic over the roster number now.

We're getting AT LEAST 1 new character this week(Hopefully), and there's going to be another Smash Direct.

Maybe I'm just super content with what we have right now, but 12-14 new characters is a great number for me, all things considered.

Except it isn't really? This may have been made pretty close to Smash 4, but the project plan started in 2015 so it took about as long as any other Smash game.

Had the Wii U not failed we probably wouldn't be getting Ultimate, or the Switch in general, until around 2019 honestly.
It is 100% different. A public announcement shouldn't be treated like "oh he's just saying that haha"
I mean, we already have 8 revealed characters, and if Vergeben is legit, there's 4 more from him.

I dunno, 12 may not be a lot compared to prior games, but it's still a good amount.
Yeah, I'd say that's semi-accurate. I'd say max 10 total non-echoes, and that's a bit generous.
Nah I gotta dispute that one. They've had 4 years to develop this game.
end of 2015 is when project plan was finished, so 2016 - 2017 - early 2018 reveal. I'd say 2 years and a year to put together finishing touches. Also, most of that time was spent with the previous returning characters and stages.

Ultimate: "the best achievable or imaginable of its kind. "

Two completely different meanings.
"Better and greater than what's usual" and "the best or most extreme example of something" seem pretty similar to me.
And since no other Smash entry is as big as this one, i'm saying this one's the ultimate game.

I finished replaying Super Mario RPG. Still a fun game. I found Culex easier this time around since I can better time the Ultra Jump.

The wait for the Direct is driving me mad but replaying old favorites has made the wait more bearable.

...BEARable.

*starts replaying Banjo-Kazooie except not really cuz I'm actually gonna replay Paper Mario TTYD next*

Basically I'm suggesting that, if constantly spending time in this thread isn't personally helping you deal with the wait, maybe replaying something you love will.

Honestly, the Japanese subtitles are always kinda lame.

Super Smash Bros Deluxe for Melee
Super Smash Bros X for Brawl
Super Smash Bros Special for Ultimate.

There's more variation in the Street Fighter 2 sequels, come on.

Looking through the data you're right, the Json doesn't have a blog post for 137 either, I'll edit it in.

As for the Memories, I wouldn't be surprised. The blog hasn't really been consistent with how it does the updates, so I can believe some characters not getting memories.

So visiting music theory here, we are missing songs from these series:
:ultpikachu::ultpit::ultfox::ultsonic::ultness::ultvillager::ultwario::ultwiifittrainer::ultshulk::ultlittlemac::ultpacman:*

:ultpacman: might be covered via Galaga remix since they're sorta related in Smash.

These series have the same number of song as in Smash 4, so they might not have any new songs to show off: :ultbayonetta::ultcloud::ultgnw:

This guy doesn't usually have music: :ultrob:

:ultduckhunt: has a confirmed new remix, but it is in the 'Other' category that may be already covered by Noisy Notebook.

We have 12 more music updates until release. That covers all of the currently missing series exactly. If Pac-Man and Duck Hunt are already covered, then we have spots for 2 more series.
My hope for the remaining newcomer songs is something like this:
:ultpikachu::ultsonic::ultvillager::ultlink::ultkirby:
(Sorry Geno)
This is, of course guessing that the dumb song theory has any merit, and that we aren't getting any new series with music.

It's not. Special is also more akin to "alternative" or "deluxe" in Japan. It pretty much means that this Smash will be the biggest compilation and the biggest fanservice one yet, not the literal Ultimate Smash game where they have to pour in 10 years of work just to get what everyone wants

"Better" and "The best" are two different degrees of good

And even then, stop looking into the titles so much. Even Sakurai said he doesn't expect this to be the last one or anything, and the reason there's so much going into it isn't because it's supposed to be some culmination of his life's work. It's just that he constantly puts a lot (almost way too much) of effort into the game every time it's iterated on to make sure it fits his vision at the time. He wants this game to be the best one so far... because he always wants his games to be the best one so far.

Not cause this is supposed to be some literally ultimate edition of the game

lol that's a dumb theory.
Well y'know, clouds and chairs and all that.

Not at all. This Smash is certainly special, because it's got all the characters and most of the old stages, but you have people questioning if it truly is "ultimate" because not all stages are returning, and there's likely no Story Mode, and that's because the game isn't "ultimate." Similar meanings? Yes. The same? Nope.

I think Ultimate is a perfect name for this new Smash brothers because it has an objectively better roster selection then any other Smash before it. Even if you prefer Melee's technical gameplay or Brawl's ridiculous story mode, Ultimate is the best one so far when it come's to Smash's main selling point - the characters. Normally I don't care for generic sounding subtitles like "Ultimate", but I think this game has earned it.

That said, I don't think the name is indicative of anything else. Just that it has the "Ultimate" character roster.

Actually going by the theory both Zelda and Kirby aren't getting any new tracks. It also never meant we aren't getting new series with music, only no new music for already covered series

All this is pointing to the reveal being Skull Kid, since Toon Link's post is right after where the newcomer would be. But we'll see in due time.
