Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Zelda is probably one of my least preferred characters.

The only times she's cute are when she's below the age of 18, and I mean "cute" as in her demeanor in those incarnations is appealing in a very precious way.

BotW actually gave her good depth though, I'll give her that. Just a shame she'll never remember how much character she had in that game in the next bland reincarnation.

So yeah.

Going just off the 'expected' characters, how will everyone react to these guys if they're revealed when the Direct drops?

Skull Kid
Isaac
Incineroar
Isabelle
Skull Kid: Awesome! I love Zelda games and Majora's Mask is one of my favorites!

Isaac: I like RPGs and he would be a unique edition to the cast!

Incineroar: ....................meh? Could be neat.

Isabelle: Never played Animal Crossing, but could be a good echo (with slight move adjustments) character.

I’ll be happy with just about any new character.

I don’t really play animal crossing, so Isabelle is neither here nor there for me. She’s cute and I’m still certainly familiar with her, but only in Smash and Mario Kart.

Isaac would be awesome. Especially if it means a revamp/rerelease/sequel to Golden Sun down the line.

I’m not really fussed on Incineroar. But honestly there are so many pokemon choices that I honestly am skeptical that people should even largely convene on one. But I do think fire wrestler would still add something new to the game. Honestly, I feel like I could get it and better from Hawlucha, but it’s still cool out of Incineroar.

On Skull Kid, I’m so starved for Zelda characters at this point that I’ll get really psyched to play him.... but I never beat Majora’s mask till the 3ds re release. So he doesn’t get the nostalgia I’d give Agnahim, Vaati, Impa, Zant, or even Byrne (who just looks cool. Since nothing else from that game will ever be reused in the franchise, I hope Byrne gets another shot). But as I said, so starved for Zelda characters in Smash that I will get mind bogglingly hyped for any.

I wanted to be able to play as a Goron by now.

You guys see this? EventHubs is reporting a rumor that Smash Blogs updates are doing some weird number things lately, and we've skipped a lot of numbers. Right in the middle of the blog updates that would have gone live during the Direct, Toon Link was set to have a character update. It gives some evidence of a Zelda update, which I think is something to be excited about. With Toon Link popping up in the middle of the updates, Tetra's chances also probably bumped up a lot more. Exciteds!

Keen-eyed fans have noticed that each blog update is numbered within the code. Thursday's update — Pokémon: Alolan Exeggutor — is blog update number 133. Meanwhile, Bowser is apparently labeled as the 142nd update. Finally, Toon Link's update is blog update 138 (while his memory in the Japanese version of the site is 139).

This means that updates 134, 135, 136, 137, 140, and 141 were outright skipped. Outside of this, blog updates 120 and 121 are the only other numbered entries that were skipped previously.

Very satisfied with all of them.
A new Zelda character that isn't part of the triforce is long overdue and appreciated. I feel like Golden Sun deserves to be represented and also I would personally feel very happy for a friend who wants him so bad. I like Incineroar and I feel like he would most likely become my main from the Pokemon representation. And I really don't care much about Isabelle but I understand why she would be put; would make it for a fresh face.

Yup, we've noticed that already.

Means there was definitely something meant to be shown off last Thursday.

Skull Kid: I’d be totally okay with this! I love the character and design, and he would certainly be a unique addition! Majora’s Mask was a great game!

Isaac: I know nothing about Golden Sun and don’t really care about Isaac at all

Incineroar: It’d be okay, but I guess just okay. I’d probably warm up to the inclusion, but there are hundreds of Pokemon I’d rather have over Incineroar, including more relevent gen 7 ones.

Isabelle: Would be cool I guess. I don’t really play Animal Crossing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

While we did notice this, I didn't realize it was all over and that Bowser and Toon Link we're posted out of order. Strange.

You don't know how much the idea of playable Tetra excites me, but I wouldn't get your hopes up. I don't think character posts lined up with recent newcomers in the past so it doesn't have to be a Zelda character.

About the missing blog posts, remember that memories and videos take up a post each. We could only get one character.

Incineroar - idk maybe :ultsnake: or :ultryu:?

Isaac - :ultness: or :ultlucas: and maybe :ultmewtwo: are not Psynergy and PSI/PK derived from psychic powers? Besides, there can be only one /s

Black Shadow (if not classified as an echo) - :ultfalcon: cause what better way to emphasize how utterly menacing Black Shadow is by going all like “your hero is dead, there is no hope now!”?

Elma - forgive me :ultlucina:, :ultshulk:, and :ultcloud:! BLADE will ensure your sacrifices are not in vain!

Chorus Kids - they won’t necessarily “die” but :ultwario: and :ultbayonetta: will be BTFO’d

Toon Link was posted on Monday. The evidence actually points to him being planned for that spot because Bowser, 142, was pulled back to Sunday to fill in a gap there (hinting at one new fighter and one Echo).

Tonight we'll be getting the music and stage updates, which are probably 140 and 141. I'm assuming both of these were pushed back to next week, and we're instead getting next week's music and stage this week. I was thinking they might push them back one day and air the Direct on Wednesday, but it appears its not the case.

With one post planned for Sunday that Bowser got pulled back into, this implies to me one unique new fighter with a trailer and memory on the same day, and an Echo Fighter without a memory.

I dunno. She's got a lot more going for her than people think.
Tetra could happen, but nothing about Toon Link's reveal is anything special of note. Bowser was pulled back, he's the interesting one, not Toon Link.

Some one has probably mentioned this but I noticed it and wanted to bring it up. In the giant scrolling art on the smash bros website, what seems to be the only npc related character in the picture is Mr. Saturn. Now I'm not saying that Mr. Saturn will be confirmed as a fighter, but what do you all think of the possibility that Mr. Saturn is place holding for another earthbound character. My bets are on ninten as an echo fighter.

Here's the problem, though.

-it looks the exact same-
"They just ripped the sprites; fake"

-it is different in any way-
"It's not the same; fake"

There is literally no way to handle Joe that people wouldn't immediately denounce it as fake.
At least changing things up (which tends to be done for all characters in Smash) makes it more "realistic" in my eyes than just literally being the same exact sprite from one of the games.
While Smash has an odd record with how they portray certain characters in Smash, like in the case of Lucina and Captain Falcon like others have mentioned before, they generally try to stay as close to the character's home incarnation and design as close as possible.
Even in regards to their renders and in-game appearance, especially with Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Like Pikachu's render is extremely reminiscent of his Gen 3 sprite and other promotional material such as the anime. Even Sonic has a pose that's similar to some of his artwork from the "modern" era.
Even with characters that necessarily don't have complete references to different designs or poses, they still evoke the personality of that character.
Especially with the newcomers, Simon's stiff expression and battle ready demeanor evokes his stoicism and hardened mentaility as the legendary vampire hunter.
Even King K. Rool, which by default is a much goofier character, shows this through his sassy pose and expression as someone that fits at home with DK's own light-hearted appearance and series.

Karate Joe's in no way fits at home with his depiction, as he's not necessarily seen as a cocky character. He's seen as a determined but gleeful character in most of his depictions.
It also doesn't evoke the feeling of Rhythm Heaven which is a charming and joyous franchise. And that's just in terms of his render alone, which not to mention isn't really on model with any of his incarnations.
Even without criticizing the render, his in-game model isn't similar to how he appears in RH at all, which is usually the most crucial component for all playable characters.
Like even with other characters, such as Mario, Samus, and DK, they're very similar to their home series appearance, if not 1:1.
And that's not even limited to veterans, look at Simon and Richter. They look as if you pulled them from their home games and threw them straight into Smash itself.
Same would go for Karate Joe, he'd look exactly like he would in Rhythm Heaven.

All of these points are exactly why I think this leak is fake. Not because of "it looks too different" or it's "exactly the same". It comes down to basic character design and comparisons to how the rest have been implemented in the series thus far.
You can create a believable leak with some distinctions that could pass by, but it requires more effort than drawing a simple character design slightly different.

Porky please. We don't need a third Mother character that plays almost the same. Also villain :D

Exactly! That's almost like assuming someone would die if we got Lip. Fat chance, IMO.

So, how would someone die in all of these anyway?
It'll take me like a whole paragraph for how these characters would die.

I'll put it simply, "deep breaths"

Bowser Jr. smacks Kirby in a duel only to get his Koopa Clown Car destroyed by a throwing spear, which happens to be Bandana Dee

Pikachu, Captain Falcon, & the Ice Climbers try and defeat Bowser, but turns into Giga Bowser and pummels them into a pulp, only to get his ass kicked and pummeled by Isaac's geokinesis.

Marth & Cloud duels into a battle until both are interrupted by Geno, and well, let's say they died by accident.

Young Link & Zelda encounters Skull Kid; both getting killed by him with his dark magic powers. (Let's hope he has a creepy trailer)

Pokemon Trainer throws a Pokeball, releasing Charizard to fight against Mewtwo, until both are defeated by a Gen 7 Pokemon (Incineroar or whoever)

They might not be the best, so there you have it.

She's so hurt... Do you have any idea how much time she puts into her hair?

Meanwhile Lily's all fine without going to a beauty contest - she knows she's perfect as she is.

Considering how Mr.Saturns weren't ever on Earthbound Beginnings MOTHER, dunno if it'd feel plausible.

Sad-face though when I realize that Paula as Ness's Echo can't ever be a possibility now...

Even though King K. Rool knocked out Dedede, that doesn't necessarily mean that he perished. Dedede could be like the Looney Tunes characters (such as Wile E. Coyote and Yosemite Sam), where he can survive just about anything, no matter how deadly.
