Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

You guys think they will be a Direct this week or nah
This week or next.
It isnt even a thought.
its a necessity.

Nintendo is risking a lot with online play. They are having a direct.

Why is this even in question?

I didn't even bring their credibility (or lack of thereof) into the argument.
I didn’t either. Meant as a joke. I really need to use emoticons more or something.

I don’t believe ****...hahaha ha.....I’ll be back when everyone forgets.

I'm leaning towards it being next week if we're getting one at all. If we hit next Saturday and nothing happens, though, I don't think we're gonna get one.

Seriously though, online services are coming, and we know nothing.
How could we not be getting a direct?

Not this week, but probably next week. It seems about that time, doesn't it?
I dunno, we went through all of July without anything.
September could be another month of nothing...

Then again, the game is three months away from release. They should want to keep the ball rolling and reveal at least one character this month.

Diversity in the music samples on the blog will give the impression that the 800 songs will be equally diverse and exciting. It sets a good first impression, it's good marketing.

One of the ways to help this impression of musical diversity is to avoid repeats in IP they're pulling the music from. So if they are wanting to market the game as well as possible, it makes sense to limit blog music to one song per franchise, which as I said before is easy to do.

It also makes sense for any unique newcomers to come with a new song. After all, even when we don't get a new stage (K Rool), we at least get a new song. This pattern can break, yes, but the reason why people believe it will hold is it's just good marketing.

Taking these together, a song from an IP seems to suggest they may not have a new character from that IP. Of course there's no guarantee, it's just an assumption Nintendo will want good marketing....

...but then again, Nintendo, as people repeatedly point out, don't take advantage of other easy marketing wins like tieing announcements/releases to related holidays. Sometimes some obvious marketing just isn't done cuz Nintendo gotta Nintendo.
But we already know of at least three other Mario remixes; the ones in Luigi, Bowser, and Bowser Jr.'s character videos, and two of those characters have been addressed on the blog (dunno if Luigi had his yet).

If they REALLY wanted to keep those songs secret, ergo do what this theory says they'll do, those character videos wouldn't have those remixes.

This is why I feel we're gonna get a Direct this Thursday, because we still don't know even the date of when it launches. It could launch on the 21st, even.

They could just tweet out details about it like they have been doing up to now. They actually made one today:

There was a problem fetching the tweet

I spent all day playing video games and 40+ pages of not really anything were posted between last time I checked and now.

I caught up with all of it.

...I'll just keep playing video games next time. No shame in skipping to the latest 3 pages from now on.

To stay on topic: today's music doesn't deconfirm Geno.

No, I'm not talking about what songs are revealed, I'm talking about which ones get a spotlight in the music blog. It's more the when you look at that section, it sets a better impression if all the icons are different

Remember in that one Smash Direct pre-Palutena's announcement where Sakurai trolled the **** out of us by showing Pseudo-Palutena's trophy from behind?

Don't take anything he does seriously lol. He has a really good sense of humour and the collective we as a community really read into stuff way too much.

Which one was this again?
Back during the Smash 4 Direct, 4 trophies were shown off between segments
Trophy_Theory_(Outdated).jpg

It got a lot of traction and really didn't die until the game leaked.
You can see how well that went.

I agree with Enchess in the sense that it makes sense for the Music Theory to be right, as it would be optimal marketing, but that's exactly why I'm doubtful. The way Nintendo has handled the blog is bafflingly bad lol.
smw is better than smb3

While I don't think there's a question if there's a September Direct, as they usually do. I do have doubts that it'll relate to anything online. Everything so far has been relegated to their website, and I would think "Why properly market a service now when you've shown no intention to do so previously?" That having been said, with the datamine showing classic controllers, I think there may be more features then they're letting on (the SNES through me for a loop), so while I don't expect them to talk about online in the Direct itself, it could be mentioned briefly, but I'm still not expecting much. Nintendo's a great company, but when marketing their online they've dropped the ball one too many times already.

Also they don't have Vampire Killer on the site, which played during Simon's trailer.

Again, not seeing how Geno is suddenly deconfirmed.

Loz is very immature and full of himself, and Verge is smug and insults the Smash community. Why can't we have nice people leak things for once.

Yeah, the blog is run terribly haha.

I have no newcomers from existing IP I feel very strongly about (I want Elma, but not nearly as much as others), so I have no stake in this. I just don't think music theory is complete nonsense.

Personally I think no.. it is much too soon.

If the history of past Smash directs is something to go by, I don't see us getting one for at least another month or so.

Screen Shot 2018-09-05 at 09.58.04.png

6 Months

Screen Shot 2018-09-05 at 09.58.13.png

8 Months, then again, 6 months.

Although the release of Smash Ultimate is much sooner than the Wii U/3DS cycle, I still don't see us getting another Smash direct literally 1 month away from the last one. Even from the E3 direct, we had about 2 months worth of waiting. It's not like we're dry from content, they're drip-feeding us the blog updates daily, so I don't see the point of another direct unless it's a big blow out of more "surprise" characters, how to unlock newcomers, or the speculated "Spirits" story mode, which personally, I think will come closer to the actual release date(Within the same week as the release).

The blog hasn't been bad really. It reminds people of content in the game while giving a snippet of one new music track per week. It's not as exciting as previous sites with Brawl's being the gold standard, but it's a question of reward in added sales versus cost of maintaining the updates and this is clearly really, really easy.

What are your expectations/dreams/fears for the next Direct?
I'm pretty much in it now just for info on whatever the heck Spirits is and if Isabelle is in or not. After I get info on those two things, I'll pretty much be good to just chill while waiting for release.

I don't expect a potential September Direct to go in detail about Spirits, though. I could see an Isabelle reveal, but even then I'd say it's 50/50. If there is a general Direct this month, Smash will definitely be there, but probably with a newcomer trailer at the end and that's it. I don't see them revealing the final batch of Echos and detailing Spirits until October.

Expect: Switch online details, one Smash reveal at the end with a unique fighter, deeper info on Three Houses and Daemon X Machina, quick reels of third party/indies.
Dreams: A second Smash reveal, this one at the very beginning, with a unique fighter + echo. Pikmin 4, Metroid Prime 4, YOSHI'S FLIPPING ISLAND
Fears: Literally just Switch online details with some random indies strewn about and one Smash reveal, the bare minimum. People will still be happy afterwards.

Nintendo has had directs focus on software. The New 2DS XL was new hardware and had its own announcement. Labo was something out of left field that again, had its own announcement. While online may be mentioned in passing, it will not get its own direct, or be heavily explained in one either.

It's not that the blog sucks, it's more that it isn't really exciting.
Besides the weekly music posts we don't exactly get anything new posted on the blog, it's all repeats of what we've seen in directs.

I'll forever be sad that E3 leak was fake because Yoshi's Flipping Island is just too godly of a name.

Went to the NintenZone social thread to talk about non-smash stuff and ended up talking about Smash anyways, so I just came back here.

The blog would have been more interesting if they didn't reveal that all previous characters were returning at E3. I know that Sakurai just wants to stay ahead of the leaks, but I miss the Brawl and Smash 4 days of speculating about which characters were going to return.
