What made Sakurai choose Simon over Bomberman anyhow? Is it gonna be one of those situations where it confirms the "they fit the AT role more" hivemind theory that'll keep Isabelle locked up?
Part of it might be Bomberman wasn't always Konami property. While Castlevania/Simon & Richter were. So another rep they actually had for the longest time seemed to have taken priority over a franchise that until Bomberman R, they pretty much left for dead for about a whole decade when Konami bought out Hudson Soft.
I'm surprised I'm not already crucified for the whole Banjo/Steve thing. though i wouldve gone to the banjo support thread if i wanted to be a **** and actually get burned at the stake
I don't know how it went down exactly, nor do I claim to. But it's pretty funny to imagine Kojima getting a paycheck for begging his character get put in Smash.
If Isabelle is an Echo Fighter of Villager, then I hope her Final Smash is Cyrus and Reese showing up, Isabelle paying Reese, and Cyrus building a Pocket Camp amenity around the opponents. I want it different from Villager’s Final Smash with Tom Nook and Timmy & Tommy.
Did you ever just reset a file because a villager you liked moved away? I had a guy on City Folk for about a year and a half. Threw it all away because a gymbro villager left. Museum was complete and everything, too.
At this point, I have no idea what we could get as a new character. The only one I see is Geno since he's one of the only Mii Costumes left from Smash 4 who hasn't been revealed as a character. Even then, as we've seen with Forest Maze being hidden in Brawl's code and Cloud only getting two Final Fantasy tracks, Square Enix seems to have a tight grip over their content.
My dream character, however, is Phoenix Wright, and speaking of which, WingedSupernova
I need that stock icon in your signature in my life.
This actually makes me 100% believe if that Gardevoir leak is true, that they will be revealed in the next nintendo direct thats most likely next month. That way they get the most (apparently) underwelming choice of newcomers out the way first. I have a hard time seeing if this rumor is true of the characters being revealed in a smash direct (although Corrin was the tip of the iceberg when it came to dissapointment XD)
As someone who played Bomberman 64/Hero a lot as a kid, seeing him made into an AT really hurt. (You Ashley and Shovel Knight fans think you know pain? Pah! Your characters are mere newborns!)
Really though, the moveset potential is there for him. I'm gonna assume that Sakurai hasn't had time to play many of his games.
The point is that nobody knows the full complexity of what goes in to these decisions, myself included, but you're acting like you do, and you reacted very harshly to an actual, established example of one company giving another company the rights to their character, for free, just because it would increase the sales of their own product using that character. It does not mean Nintendo/Microsoft will make the same deal. It doesn't even mean the same deal is likely. But it's a clear precedent for two companies that no one ever thought would cooperate finally coming to a mutually beneficial agreement. The comparison is not half as "bizarre" as you think it is.
In fact, I'd guess it's likely the exact thing that occurred with Snake in Brawl. Imagine Kojima coming to Sakurai and saying "please put Snake in Smash, but also pay me for the privilege."
What gave such an impression that I know the full complexity of what a company do. Like I said, the ONLY argument to what I said was if Microsoft was license to Nintendo freely. You were also comparing movie companies and to be more specific you gave an example where Marvel, the person who created and originally owned Spider-Man collaborating with Sony who they gave Spider-Man rights too. It's a false equivalency because Sony never gave the rights back to Marvel; they simply allowed them to use him for a limited time.
Also HOLD up; Sony gets 100% of the box office WHILE Marvel help picks nearly everything ranging from cast, plot etc while Marvel can use Spider Man. So actually they are both getting something out of it and it's not free ; Marvel pretty much helps produce Sony Spider-Man movies while Sony takes 100% of the box office while Marvel get to use Spider Man in their Avengers. Nothing is free. I gave you the benefit and doubt. This is exactly why I research everything. You were being very loose on what someone in a business would call "free" my friend (it's wasn't free). I assure you both businesses in any situation will get something out of the deal unless they're dumb or been scammed.
So yeah.. no businesses transactions work like that in which one party completely benefits from the other.
What made Sakurai choose Simon over Bomberman anyhow? Is it gonna be one of those situations where it confirms the "they fit the AT role more" hivemind theory that'll keep Isabelle locked up?
Honestly, it probably just came down to Castlevania being a more popular and iconic series than Bomberman but Sakurai didn't want to leave such an iconic character out of the game entirely.
On one hand, I didn't expect to see them at all and had a little moment of joy seeing them. But then I got bummed realizing I would have rather had them as characters
She's literally a bigger "All-Star" than three fourths of the current playable cast, and is promoted to hell and back.
I've been calling her just as much of a shoo-in as the Inklings since long before Ultimate was announced, and I still stand by that. "There's no such thing as shoo-ins" be damned.
My roomates and I were playing City Folk back in the days (all 4 of us in the same village). We had this Penguin Frida, she had a very bad attitude so we decided to bully her until she left (digging holes and dropping trash around her house as well as other creative means of vandalism). One day she left. We partied... in real life
I kinda wish we got more leak killing reveals on the blog. I know most people dread Assist Trophy reveals more than ever, constantly hoping your number 1 isn't stuck with Waluigi and friends in what seems to be their last chance before the DLC season, but they'd be appreciated minor content. For the Pokémon, Poké Ball reveals would be appreciated, too. It stings knowing that your character won't be in any tournaments, or is RNG based spawning, but it's for the greater good.
At least Shovel Knight and Bomberman get to actually do something. Ashley just sits in the back doing nothing.
It already sucks to have your character be an Assist Trophy, but a useless Assist Trophy? It stings.

Sony still financed Homecoming 100%. I.e, Marvel may have produced it, but they didn't pay for it. And they produced it because Kevin Feige wanted to produce it. I'd call not having to pay for anything "free" any day of the week.
EDIT: Decided to not spoiler the image because that's what's gonna draw people to read it maybe. If a mod's not okay with it just lock it up and sue or something idk how this works
So basically if you didn't read my post from a little while ago, I think Banjo and Steve are the biggest of the triad of Microsoft IPs, with the lowest end being Microsoft's own creation: Master Chief. But who would top out in Smash between the two? I got no ****in' idea I'm not Sakurai and I don't wanna pretend like I know the most probable outcome in a choice; because I don't. I'm not even a legal adult yet, I shouldn't be trusted with these options.
But what I can present is my stupid worthless opinion and a little bit of facts here and there to maybe help some others get their big high IQ brains going.
Banjo first appeared in 1998 on the Nintendo 64, probably something you already know. But when Microsoft took that sweet sweet Rare IP, so did his ties with Nintendo. However, with Nintendo and Microsoft being all buddy buddy in recent years, this could be his chance at a new appearance for the first time in a decade.
What Banjo (and the unrelated Conker and that chick from Perfect Dark) has over all other Microsoft IPs, he does have a significant advantage in. That is his preexisting ties with Nintendo.
As the recent craze of bringing characters that have been requested in the same amount of time that Banjo has disappeared from the face of the planet (Ridley, Simon Belmont, King K. Rool, and possibly more!), that could make his revival all the more imminent if the trend continues. Banjo may have scored really high on the Ballot, which will play a big role in his favor and is probably the biggest make-or-break he has. Many people are confident in his potential results.
Hell, even Phil Spencer said he wouldn't mind putting him in! That's surely a done deal, right?
Well, not really. Phil Spencer could've likely said the same about any big Microsoft IP, but he was only asked about Banjo specifically. Who knows what would've happened if he was asked to choose what character from Microsoft he would've wanted the most, but that's just his opinion and nothing more... like his tweet. Phil isn't the say all for these types of decisions, and what comes out in the end may not come exactly as Phil expressed his gratitude for.
Also, Banjo Kazooie isn't really as big of a hit in the East as it was in the West. As many as near 2 million units in North America is shaking between 450k to 550k in Japan (thats about 1/4 compared to NA sales). I know, I know, being in the game kind of makes that point obsolete if you see it as such, but it could be a big issue as I will talk about in our next character's descriptions.
Rare owns Banjo, but there are other series that are currently live and could be picked over Banjo. That is, Fulgore from Killer Instinct (or really anyone from that game) or Rash from Battletoads (which was both a character in KI and is in the new Battletoads remake coming next year). And both IPs have made their appearances on Nintendo consoles before, even on separate generations!
Steve is an unnamed enigma, but Minecraft's official release came out in 2009 on the PC. Microsoft grabbed the IP from Mojang a few years ago, and has been going strong in its advertising, making it one of the alltime best selling games that Microsoft owns. So what's so special about this enigma?
Let's get the obvious out of the way. Minecraft is huge; really huge. Holy **** it's one of the best selling games period. With over 100 million copies on its belt and continuously rising, this thing is nuts over the globe. This is not only true in the West, but also in the East, where Japan sales of the game have reached millions upon millions on the multiple platforms he has appeared on. Even Japan resident user @Venus of the Desert Bloom mentions accounts of seeing children mention the game.
This is definitely a defining edge over Banjo, which is Minecraft's sheer popularity.
Did I mention multi-platform? Minecraft has made its way from PC, to Xbox, the Playstation, and of course, Nintendo consoles on the Wii U, 3DS, and Switch. Minecraft is everywhere, and if you want a system (and game) seller, Minecraft is the way to go in Smash Bros. I'm not suggesting Sakurai should go the money route, but if he sees fit, the madman may just.
Remember when I mentioned Nintendo and Microsoft being buddy buddy as of late? What game do you think started that? Certainly wasn't Banjo Kazooie. Minecraft and its crossplay feature for both Nintendo and Xbox consoles helped form a friendly relationship. Microsoft may have formed a circle around its game to be used, since its both its best selling and most recent familiar shared property with Nintendo at the moment.
As I've mentioned before, Steve is an enigma. He's not really a mascot, that goes more towards mob enemies such as the Creeper. It may not be wise to use such a generic avatar. I'm not a personal fan of this argument (due to ultcorrin: being just that), but you have to see both sides to remain truly neutral.
Minecraft may also conflict with the art style, as many as argued it to be too drab or "ugly" for Smash's design.
People are also reluctant to share the same audience as the shunned Minecraft audience, which includes various internet celebrities and waves of children.
Finally, the biggest hitter: the Smash Ballot. Banjo could have scored high, and as we've seen, the Ballot seems to take some type of priority over newer characters in some shape or form. If it's big enough, Minecraft definitely won't have a playable scene.
This is probably the biggest battle of Popular Nostalgia VS Popular Relevancy that I have seen for Smash character dilemma. No character is really a better choice than the other when it comes to how much they can qualify more than others. I can't say one character deserves a slot more than another because saying characters deserve to be in a crossover game is pretty dumb as is. It's mostly down to opinion on what you think.
"But Banjo obviously scored high on the polls! Steve never has a chance!", I hear one guy cry out.
That's what you may think. But remember how people talked about the big "meme" or "impossible" ballots, like Goku or Shrek. Allow me to wrap you in some tinfoil for a moment. Would you believe me if I told you that due to its large audience, Minecraft may have an impactful placing on the polls? Now it may seem pretty out of thought, because even I'm skeptical that enough kids are playing Smash Bros. to flood the market with Minecraft votes, but I don't believe that it's impossible. I'll let you think about that proposal, get a big thonker going on.
I hope my rambling gave some insight or maybe it was a fun read to look into. or maybe i'm just dumb and wrong and nobody will even read it but who knows
Yeah but so is Ashley, and many thought Ashley would be a shoo in too.
Just a feeling I have that she won't make it in as a playable fighter. I think it's likely she will be in the game as a fighter but I also thought Ashley was likely too dientk her popularity in Japan.
Basically I'm not expecting her in anymore but would not be suprised if she was an assist trophy.
Full disclosure, I never saw Ashley as a likely pick. I never really brought it up since I didn't want to be a wet blanket, but I'm just putting it out there. But at the end of the day, Ashley is still a comparatively niche character. Isabelle is one of Nintendo's more mainstream characters. They're in completely different leagues.
I think Isabelle is a lock at this point. She has become a huge part of the AC series and her assist trophy is gone with the AC assist trophy now being Kapp'n and Isabelle's assist function being replaced by Chef Kawasaki.
Sony still financed Homecoming 100%. I.e, Marvel may have produced it, but they didn't pay for it. And they produced it because Kevin Feige wanted to produce it. I'd call not having to pay for anything "free" any day of the week.
What are you talking about? You starting to not make sense now honestly. In fact, you annoyed me now because you outright lied on the whole Marvel and Sony thing and anyone will tell you that the exact details of that deal was nothing close to free and I had the nerve to give you the benefit of the doubt. You stated information in your argument that was false which made your entire post fall flat and then you tell me to lighten up and call me naive after I was informing people about a topic when your own counter argument was an outright lie in the first place. It is not cool or okay to be falsely making up information and then appliying it to an argument as if it okay or as if I'm dumb. I don know weither you were confused about the deal itself or was purposefully lying and thinking I wouldn't research myself. NOT COOL.
I recommend everyone to make sure your counter argument is legit because someone like me will absolutely check and debate back. I am not the one to be trifled with or lied too.
Okay so you do know that Marvel helped produce the Spider Man movie homecoming and they did not get any of the profit. Your argument doesn't hold up anymore. HOMECOMING IS SONY. Sony financed it cause ITS their movie LOL. Marvel helped (lead the production mind you) produce it (in fact having the "creative lead" but didn't receive any profit from it (Box Office). It's essentially a marvel studios production that Sony reaps 100% of the profit from. This is now off-topic but as I stand; nothing is free in life especially business deals. Everything cost money to produce; the idea is to make a return on investment.
At least Shovel Knight and Bomberman get to actually do something. Ashley just sits in the back doing nothing.
It already sucks to have your character be an Assist Trophy, but a useless Assist Trophy? It stings.
Useless? It's a debuff assist.
I like to categorize Assists in three categories:
- Active (i.e. Gray Fox, Waluigi, Zero, etc.), meaning they purposefully pursue and move around to hit specific enemies and targers
- Inactive (i.e. Riki, Ashley, Tingle, etc.), meaning they do things that may or may not assist you specifically, but can also damage others aside you indirectly
- How the **** is this Assisting? (i.e. Moon, Nightmare, Nintendogs, etc.), they spit on the name Assist by either killing you or not helping you at all
I keep seeing DLC get mentioned. I know Sakurai said recently that he'd "keep making Smash games if the demand was there", but has he/Nintendo mentioned DLC at all?
That being said, I really hope we do get DLC. Third party payment would probably be easier and we could probably get Echo/costume packs.
Kamek could actually work well for it. Summon Kamek, then it flies across the stage with the magic dust and either makes you large or shrinks all your opponents.
I don't get why in a game where we can have mario vs mario vs mario vs mario vs mario vs mario vs mario vs mario...
Assists trophies have to deconfirm a character. Is it that bad if the same character appears on screen? I mean Nintendo has already made the model, seems like a missed opportunity not to add in AT characters as fighters as DLC at a later date.
Mind you this was pre Street Fighter IV which was the game that pushed Ryu into Capcom's poster boy spotlight. Mega Man was still Capcom's biggest seller at this time and was more in the limelight than even Sonic. Sonic had some games going for him but Mega Man had been on every console Nintendo had since the NES and was as big then as he ever was with Mega Man 9 on the way in 2008. Sonic edged out Mega Man during this time BECAUSE of the rivalry, it was a boon to Sonic that handled just as well beside his current status on Nintendo and his overall popularity. Brawl was a crazy time dude, the announcement of Snake rocked the ****ing world. It was insane.
Doesn’t sound surprising for Mega Man to have been the only top guy of Capcom back in the day, but with Sonic being the biggest 3rd party of them all due to Sega going 3rd Party and the company making peace with Nintendo after a decade + of **** (leading to a beautiful teamwork), that seems like way more than edging out (that’s Sonic straight up surpassing most/all characters regardless of their status)
Capcom USA and Capcom Japan are two separated companies. It's more likely Sakurai just wanted MegaMan more, as he could make him playable easier. He didn't make Ryu playable because he couldn't figure out a fun mechanic for him. So he went to Capcom Japan and there you go. Consideration doesn't require licensing, after all, only work on the character.
Though they’re different, they’re both still Capcom (and both more than likely wanted Ryu more during Smash 4...before MM joined...and MM during Brawl...fortunately it doesn’t matter now that they got to have both represented). Also, I have the assumption Sakurai went to Capcom Japan for all theee series being represented
Kamek could actually work well for it. Summon Kamek, then it flies across the stage with the magic dust and either makes you large or shrinks all your opponents.
Playability might be the ideal, but take it from an Isaac supporter, while disappointment is natural, bemoaning that your character only made AT is looking a gift horse in the mouth. Don't get complacent and take things for granted, you could always be worse off.
