Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Let's say every franchise gets a boss, who do you pick for each one?

I'd go with
:ultmario: - Bring back petey/King Boo
:ultdk: - King Frederick
:ultlink: - Gohma is probably the most iconic so him, or maybe pull a giga bowser sort of thing and have ganon
:ultsamus: - Kraid/Mother Brain
:ultfox: - Andross obvi
:ultinkling: - DJ Octavio
:ultkirby: - Wispy woods is most iconic so that makes sense
:ultpikachu: - Either bring back rayquaza or use one of the other legendaries like reshiram and zekrom or something
:ultshulk: - A telethia would be cool, metal face could come back too though
:ultsonic: - Eggman obviously

Not familiar enough with :ultmarth::ultfalcon::ultlittlemac::ultmegaman::ultness::ultolimar::ultryu::ultsnake: to really make a judgement on the rest
:ultpikachu:: Good old Rayquaza
:ultsnake:: METAL GEAR REX!
:ultpit:: Hades would be cool
:ultlink:: Majora would be nice
:ultolimar:: Plasma Wraith or Emperor Bublax
:ultlittlemac:: Mr. Sandman
:ultness:: Porky is a classic
:ultmarth:: Any evil dragon would work. Probably Grima is the best choice.

Also for those of you thinking "Well Starman is just a generic enemy, why should he get in Smash?"

I have the perfect solution

Oof, I'll find the burn cream.

O ****, we doing bosses?

:ultmario:: Kamek
:ultdk:: The Tiki dudes
:ultyoshi:: Bunch of Shy Guys? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
:ultwario:: No idea. Everyone in Wario has a personality and they aren't all exactly evil. Maybe just minigames like in Warioware
:ultlink:: Skull Kid if he doesn't make it or a Guardian
:ultsamus:: Mother Brain? I dunno Metroid too well
:ultfox:: Andross
:ultkirby:: Marx
:ultpikachu:: Rayquaza
:ultfalcon:: The cars lol
:ultness:: Gigyas
:ulticeclimbers:: Polar Bear?
:ultmarth:: Black Knight if he doesn't make it.
:ultgnw:: **** if I know
:ultpit:: Hades or Medusa
:ultolimar:: Bulborb
:ultsonic:: Chaos or Eggman
:ultsnake:: Any Metal Gear, it sounds so ****ing badass to fight them
:ultlittlemac:: Mr Dream or King Hippo
:ultryu:: Akuma???????????????
:ultcloud:: I dunno FF
:ultbayonetta:: One of the Infernal Demons
:ultinkling:: One of the final bosses

:ultyoshi: - Raphael the Raven
:ultlink: - King Dodongo
:ultkirby: - Kracko
:ultsamus: - Metroid Queen
:ultpikachu: - Giratina Origin Form
:ultmarth: - Medeus or Grima
:ultness: - Natural Killer Cyborg
:ultmegaman: - Mecha Dragon

I feel like it's just generally best to avoid smaller bosses, a boss battle is no fun if all the challenge is in trying to even land a hit. Because of this I have a hard time seeing the likes of F-Zero, Punch Out and Street Fighter getting bosses.

What have they been saying exactly?
Not sure if this has been answered yet but generally they're saying they want to take a innocent until proven broken approach with this game. The one exception being that if the stage can kill you with zero player input (even with hazards off), it should be banned outright. This means rip Town and city because of the platforms can carry you off the side during the transformation. The logic being that scarcity of stages is no longer an issue so stage requirements can be a lot more strict.

Some are even open to revamping the stage striking system. I'm very interested in seeing how the competitive scene develops.

I do also hope that more of the key influencers participate in the discussions here. I know twitter and discord are more popular among that crowd but both of these platforms lack visibility, efficient archiving, and an opportunity for greater input.

So out of morbid curiosity I went on 4chan to try and find "leaks" for us to rip into. I ended up finding this:
View attachment 158154
I'm a bit skeptical, as we should be with any rumor. Mostly because they say the supposed SMRPG stage will have 10 tracks. Since it would most likely be considered a Mario stage it would have more music than that due to how much Mario music we're bound to have and the fact Sakurai said as long as it's part of a series it will have all the available music for that series.

Edit: It states Shadow will return as an assist trophy in the blacked out parts

I dig the Geno/Mallow idea and basically welcome anything telling me Geno will be in the game but... i dont think this ones anything, it says there will be a SMRPG stage and sakurai was pretty clear on 103 total stages. i dont think we'll get more than 103 until DLC.

its actually something I find in favor of Geno as no other third parties have ever been added in without a stage from their game series and Geno doesn't need a stage as he's likely going to just be grouped as part of the Mario series.

Interesting, I heard another leak say Geno and Mallow would be a tag team.

That sounds incredibly dumb.
Sakurai: *gives a bunch of legal stages and stages that can become legal without hazards*
Competitive community: "let's make it as small as past games!"

Australia, get some rest. East coast, USA has it from here.

I'll reserve judgment until I see how it turns out in practice. Since there are so many potential options, players could potentially be overwhelmed if we're too liberal. If we have ~9 legal stages that have different layouts and that actually see use in tournaments I'll be happy.

Only gonna do the franchises I know anything about.

:ultmario: - Gooper Blooper, Mechawiggler, or King Kaliente
:ultdk: - Kudgel
:ultlink: - Manhandla, Helmaroc King, Twinrova
:ultkirby: - Dynablade
:ultpikachu: - Yveltal or Lugia. Honestly, I kinda think flying bosses usually work the best in smash bros (i.e. SSE Ridley)
:ultyoshi: - Raphael the Raven
:ultwario: - Golden Diva
:ultlittlemac: - King Hippo
:ultmegaman: - Centaur Man
:ultpacman: - Spooky
:ultolimar: - Emperor Bulblax. This is my biggest want not only because he's the most iconic baddie of my fav series but also because I wanna hear a dope remix of The Final Trial, one of my favourite tracks from any video game. Other options would be Sandbelching Meerslug, Waterwraith, Pileated Snagret, and Armoured Canon Beetle.

TOs and and community have been scrambling to get a stage list together that might work. No way in hell every TO is gonna look at the potential legal stage list and it make extremely strict. I heard M2K (lol) say on stream that we need to start gigantic and then slowly work down into a good stage list.

Yeah that's actually better, like that we get to see if something simply doesn't work or not. It's why I hope the FS Meter, Squad Strike and Stage Morphing at least get tried out for a while to see if it works for a competitive scene or not

Ehh I doubt they will make it small, they will probably use the hazards toggle too.

Lugia does not count as a boss.

A lot of these will be tested in side events I'm sure. As a competitor however, I don't want to see these things in main events until they're tested extensively in these side events.

Stage list is a little weird tho. There will be a lot of stages, but for anyone thinking the legal stage list will be massive because of that is going to be disappointed. A reasonable post game stage ban system, and redundant stages will end up bringing the list down to a slightly larger number than what we had previously. Because there are more stages, we will be able to be more picky about what we actually end up using. So I'm guessing things like different platform layouts will be prioritized over a bunch of similar layouts.

Is there any reason it makes more sense to fight Rayquaza than Lugia like is it just because Lugia is supposed to be nicer or something. Just lemme fight Lugia bruh whats so wrong with that.
You can catch and fight Lugia, however it is not evil.
If anything I think it is a good guy.

An example of a Pokemon Boss would be Cyrus or Ghetsis.

Really? I'm still feeling like Customs are gone for whatever reason. They sorta made it sound like a Mii exclusive thing on the website a while back.
The customs fate is still somewhat unanswered, considering that that topic was never mentioned in last week's Smash Direct, and the menus that we've seen probably aren't final.

That leak has been fake for several months now. It said that Samurai Goroh and Takamaru would be playable when they remained ATs.
Though I wouldn't doubt that if Geno go in, Mallow would be part of his moveset or you could switch between the two.

I know for a fact Lugia is evil because it took me a month trying to get a shiny one. I gave up and ended up using a glitch to make sure it was shiny

A boss doesn't have to be evil to be a boss, Shiny.

There just needs to be a reason for a conflict.

Every legendary in pokemon easily counts as a boss
To be fair, there really aren't any actual boss fights in the Pokemon series. They're usually categorized in a manner similar to the following...
  • Wild Pokemon battle
  • Trainer battle
  • Gym Leader battle
  • Evil Organization battle (Ex.: Team Rocket)
  • Elite Four battle
  • Champion battle

Elite 4, gym leaders , evil team bosses and totem Pokémon are all bosses surely
