Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Blue in the manga is also pretty cool. It's nice to see a fan of Blue, since most people dislike Gary so much and, well, associate the two as the same. Blue in the manga had a lot of interesting things about him. I liked how the portrayed him in Pokemon: Origins, as well.

Bolded what I wanted to discuss. Why isn't this ever brought up about Gen 2? I was super hyped as a kid when I found out I could go back to the Kanto Region! We need more of this in the current games. Gen 8 needs to open up some past regions to explore.

Personally, I'm more of a Venusaur fan. But Blastoise, Charizard, and Venusaur are all pretty awesome.

As for Blastoise taking that punch in the face? Epic moment in Origins. I want a new anime with the Pokemon Origins style. Take us through the other gens with the other characters. Highlight the epic moments, just like with Origins. I think that would do so well...
Yeah, I'm more of a Charizard fan, but I can't tell if that's nostalgia talking or I am, so I'm glad he got the spotlight for that miniseries. That moment with Blastoise was way too cool though, and super memorable.
I wish Pokemon would drop Ash Ketchum and become like Jojo or the Pokemon Adventures Manga where every season was set on a generation and with old generations being revisited for the remakes. That'd be my dream come true, instead of Ash's adventures in losing at the final tournament.

Ash=Trash.
Just give some new kid a different Pikachu so you can keep the mascot. But unfortunately at this point Ash is too iconic for them to dump.
Can't wait to see him lose the Alola league...

Don't the trailers specifically say it isn't game footage?
ALL cutscenes aren't gameplay. They right that so people don't think it actually has those graphics during the game

Doesn't mean the cutscene is necessarily not in the game

Hold up. Are you saying playing as Magnemite wouldn’t be fun as hell?
Never implied anything of the sort. :p

Just saying that the results of the Ballot likely won't make a dent in the whole "Generations matter" thing since the top three candidates for a Pokémon would be among:
-a Melee veteran (Pichu)
-a bandwagon based solely on being a Grass Starter (Sceptile)
-a meme vote that's from Gen 1 anyway (Magnemite)

With Squirtle and Ivysaur being next in line after that.

Well, no one let's me turn it into a Fatal Frame discussion thread. :) But really, this thread feels a bit chaotic right now that it's been awhile since the Direct. Maybe Pokemon is the new Shadow echo.
Side note: I've seen a Fatal Frame rep on leaks starting all the way back before E3 and still see it pop up now. I haven't been saving the links cuz I'm dumb, but I think it's safe to say a FF rep has shown up on at least 10 leaks. Just putting this out there so just in case a Fatal Frame rep is announced and people say "nobody was leaking that" or "nobody would've guessed that" and everyone jumps behind a fake leak, I can quote this and be like "revisionism"
I'd be down for talking about Fatal Frame. I don't know much about it but it looks really interesting.

So I remember watching a video on the top 10 characters someone wants in SSBU and one of them was 2B from Nier: Automata. So this got me thinking of how she would feel in Smash.

In all seriousness, this is probably true. There’s way too many Pokémon for the ballot to have really had a clear cut winner.

I mean, I could see the likes of Gardevoir or Sceptile, like you said, getting a lot of votes, but probably not the amount that big names from other series got

"One of the first things they say in overseas ratings reviews is 'no guns'—that I can understand. But in Japan, they immediately ask 'could you show us all the female characters upside-down?' Super Smash Bros. for Wii U almost didn’t make its scheduled release date because of ratings issues. We had to revise Palutena and Wonder Pink’s models over and over again." - - Sakurai

Good luck getting 2B past CERO, lol.

So does anyone think Jeanne has a chance of being a Bayo echo? I’ve never seen it brought up (though I’m sure it has been), but it could be possible

Especially since Gen 2 and 3 were much bigger parts of my childhood than Gen 1 outside the anime. :/
Hell, before Incineroar came around, I was pretty much "the Entei guy" for all of my Smashboards tenure.
Hot Take: Entei is a better choice for a fighter than any of the more popular requests that have been brought up during Ultimate Speculation. Imo

Honestly, I'd even doubt Gardevoir got nearly as much as Sceptile.

There was a specific niche people wanted Sceptile to fill, and only Sceptile could fill it.

So I just got familiar with the EVO final controversy and I just think it's an absolute disgrace what those two finalists did.

Makes the entire community look really bad, and Bayonetta just ruined smash 4.

Say what you want about Falco and Fox in smash melee but at least they weren't cheap and both required high amounts of technical skill to play, and other characters like marth and Jigglypuff are still very viable.

If I paid money to watch that I would be booing them too.

I think that if they're going to represent smash they need to show some professionalism, and obviously playing smash at a tournament isn't something that requires a uni degree but all the same some professionalism is expected.

So, if any other Final Fantasy character gets into Smash, they'd need a brand new logo, right?

The Music page lists the FF specifically as "Final Fantasy 7"... and if someone like Cecil or Terra got in, they obviously aren't from FF7.

When gen 2 came out people in my class started making fun of people that "Still played Pokemon" and it actually lead to me stop playing the games. Also the fact I never got a GBA, only my brother did.

I played Leaf Green on my brother's GBA when it came out but that was my only experience in gen 3

But gen 4 came out right as I finished highschool and no one cared at that point if you played Pokemon or not

So I have a lot of good memories of Gen 1 and 2, but not 3. But definitely 4

Bayo already has her Jeanne alt and she's not important to the series in the sense that Richter was but at this point it's hard to say.

She's literally the most perfect echo character so I hope so, plus she's just generally a great character with a dope design

That's why I don't think it's going to be a FF rep if a Square character gets in.

It's going to be either Sora, Geno, or Crono (Who is a long shot)

All FF's have their own little icon thing though. FF7 has that meteor. FF6 has ...

Someone riding magitek armor? Is that supposed to be Terra or Kefka?

Edit: Ponytails were popular in FF6

True I forgot about the alt. That seems to be a big indicator with the echoes. Chrom/Ike alts, Samus/Dark Samus.

Jury’s still out on Diddy’s pink outfit

I’d personally love her as an echo. She’s my favorite Bayonetta character.

We don't really have a horror game rep now that I think about it. I mean unless you count Luigi's Mansion for some reason. And it'd be nice to have an indie character! And it just so happens that indie horror is quite popular! How about an indie horror character?

No thank you. I don't care if it was the the first region, other regions exist and they deserve representation as well.
It's anyways pretty amusing to see Pokemon fans draw invisible lines between the different Pokemon based on when they were designed. The casual person isn't going to look at the roster and be all in a huff that one generation is represented more than the other, they just see Pokemon. Y'all act like the different generations of Pokemon make them deferent series entirely and once one gets too many reps they should stop (a la fire emblem) they're all Pokemon, no matter what gen, and I think people don't treat them that way

Try to consider the situation from the finalists' perspectives. Up until grand finals, they were playing to win. That means picking a top tier like Bayonetta. Throughout the event, they were on the receiving end of constant harassment and jeering from the crowd. That kind of **** can get to you. So, it got to the point where they felt the need to let off some steam by acting out during grand finals.

Was it the right decision? No, but they're just teenagers. They're not gonna have the stonewall professionalism that others like Zero had. If you're looking for maturity in the Smash community, I say ask it from the audience that provoked this incident in the first place. Unless, of course, you think a crowd of full-grown adults shouting wildly at a couple of kids was the right way to go about it.

Honestly for some reason, when thinking of indie horror characters that can fit into Smash's style, my brain automatically goes to Bendy. Specifically his cartoon form.

I mean honestly, imo, he wouldn't look out of place with characters like G&W or Pacman. And TheMeatly could probably come up with a few ideas for his moveset. Obviously it is highly unlikely but it's something fun to think about!

You realize that the reason why they stalled is because people booed them?

Imo only iconic pokemon missing from gen1 are meowth and gengar. If smash5 really has a heroes vs villians theme, gengar would fit really well as a villian for pokemon.

What is the chance we get 2 newcomer pokemon? (Gengar and Incineroar)

Not saying it will happen, just want to know what do you guys think...
