Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

You all need to stop thinking of Pokemon as generational reps. Pikachu, Charizard, and Mewtwo are not playable because they’re from Gen 1, they’re playable because they’re all incredibly popular, recognizable, and iconic. Pikachu, Charizard, and Mewtwo are pretty much THE faces of Pokemon.

No Pokemon has ever been added to represent a generation. The newer Pokemon were added to coincide with advertising that the Pokemon Company was doing or planning.

You literally did. Unless you mean a second Red and Blue remake, because we sure as **** don't have enough Kanto after a ****ton of megas, the Kanto starters in XY and Alolan Pokemon being Kanto only and Let's Go.
I'll admit I have no interest in the remakes. And I thought like the first gen 1 remakes on GBA which I've played they would be keeping Blue.

Let's Go is shaping up to be a dreadful game absolutely dreadful, no battling Pokemon, kiddified holding your hand tone again, but all the same, Nintendo wants to sell the games and generate hype.

We already have Red and as he's not the playable character in the remakes the only rival that would make sense is Blue. Moreover Red and Lief are from the Pokemon Firered remakes and Blue is still the rival in that series.

Every time a gen 1 hater hates on gen 1 my love for gen 1 grows more absolute.
I don't hate Gen1, but if you asked me to sit down and play Red or Ruby from start to finish, I'd pick Ruby 100% of the time. Gen1 just isn't enjoyable to me with how dated it feels, which is really odd because I love a lot of older games like Kirby's Adventure or Mario Land 2... I just don't feel like Gen1 holds up.

Now FireRed/LeafGreen are great remakes IMO and fix most of the 'oldness' the game has.

Gen 5 imo.

I also personally liked Sun and Moon's plot.
It’s one of the few generations where the human characters are as likeable and as centerpoint as the Pokémon, which is what makes Gen 5 unique and special.

Though there are a lot of glaring Pokémon from that generation, but there are a couple that I really like.

As someone who's favorite gen is V, I don't actually care about having a playable Unova rep. I'm fond of plenty of Unova mons but none of the ones I like scream Smash roster material. Really, Unova Pokémon League returning in glorious HD has me satisfied with gen V representation...

…now Hoenn representation on the other hand is ****ing woeful. That gen needs either a rep or a stage posthaste!

If we got Meloetta as a Gen V newcomer what would be your reaction?
That sounds great. I was having an IRL hypothetical conversation about which Octopath character would add the most to Smash gameplay-wise and I thought a dancer might really create a cool playstyle. Meloetta could fill a lot of that while also doing some other cool music themed stuff.

For the most part it isn't the gen itself. It's the genwunners. I like gen 1 (after all it's where my second favorite pokemon comes from!) but I prefer 3 and 5. I just get tired of the over saturation of gen 1 and how genwunners treat it like the perfect game when it obviously has flaws just like every game.

She could also switch stance to from long range to close combat. Come to think of it we haven't seen Pokéball Meloetta, it's a small chance but if Sakurai added her to the game, He'd hear no complaints from me.

Yeah that's exactly right.

Generations shouldn't be a free ticket for representation they should mean nothing. It's all about the Pokemon being judged on their own merits.

Plusle and Minum as a throwback to Brawl.

But seriously? Metagross would be super cool as a playable character, but I think I'll be boring and go with the general consensus and one of my favourite Pokemon, Sceptile.

I want a gen 3 Pokemon because I love Gen 3. Nothing more, nothing less. It's about the only generation of Pokemon that'd excite me with a new fighter that I can think of.

I agree but there are still a lot of Pokémon from other generations that are very popular and would work well and have their own merits for inclusion as well.

That’s how I look at it.

I thought we were supposed to get 4 more non-echoes based on Vergeben or something? I remember it being something like 6 newcomers after Inkling/Ridley and we have Simon and K.Rool as two of them so four more... I don't really remember which things are which from which leaks, but I remember that number coming from someone who didn't seem completely false and it's about in line with what makes sense. I could totally believe that Amazon posted sales information too early like that. It's pretty interesting.

Nah, they just count Trainer as 1 and Echoes as separate fighters.

Are you sure you wanna go down that road? I get the feeling most here would argue there's way more Pokemon worthy on their own merits outside of Gen1 than within.

Although on subject of deserving Pokemon ignoring whether gen is represented, I think Meganium would actually be a lot of fun. But I am partial to the idea of a quadrupedal fighter.

Exhibit A as to why Blastoise is ****ing rad:

I'll be honest I'll be a little hypocritical if Beedrill is added. That is the only gen 1 pokemon I want other than Blastoise but I'm fine with him being left out.

I mean... one thing about the whole Pokemon generational thing is that, don't we also have to look at it from the perspective of very young fans who wouldn't have started with Gen 1 and thus have extreme nostalgia for another Gen? People are going to have nostalgia for whatever they started with.

Of course, though, then again... with Game Freak's current plan, it seems like they want to make everyone be nostalgic for Gen 1 even if they're just playing Pokemon for the first time now in Gen 7, which honestly makes it easier for TPC to make merch and makes it easier for Sakurai to represent people's nostalgia, so there's more practicality in it than you'd think?

I've always hated Blastoise because I love Wartortle so much and Blastoise is the Pokemon that takes it away (and who am I to deny my Pokemon a chance to grow?). That's awesome though and I can't think of anything bad to say about Blastoise that's not "it's not Wartortle"

I'd take anyone honestly. All the starters are great. I've always loved Gardevoir too. I never thought about Sableye but that'd be an interesting concept for a fighter.
He was just my fav in my gen 3 team. I’m surprised others mentioned the other Pokémon in my gen 3 team. Breloom and Zangoose. For some reason I always liked Grovyle over Sceptile.

But I wouldn’t want a Pokémon for gens or popularity. I’d want a new Pokémon for a unique typing compared to our current Pokémon smash reps. Even more importantly, I’d love a unique playstyle compared to any other smash fighter.

When I think unique playstyle, I think about Aegislash, Trevanant, hitmontop, Mr. Mime(invisible wall miming?), Muk, Golem, Scolipede.

There are so many weird abilities, movesets and body types that could make really interesting new fighters. It’s insane to me that only Ivysaur seems to fill the role of most unique with so many choices throughout each generation.

I love the Gen V games, but seriously I'm struggling to think of more than 3 potential playable candidates from them. The designs are so out there on a lot of them, and Gen V also has some of the most forgettable pokemon from the entire series. Anyone remember Elgyem, Maractus, and Heatmor?

Now Gen 3 on the other hand, has tons of viable options imo.

What's everyones opinion on people thinking that the 103 stages we have now are the only stages we're getting ?
