sakurais words will always be scrutinized during smash speculation season, you never know what is and isnt a "hint", he showed a picture of action figures one time and it had charizard alone and dark pit and pretty much everyone ignored it as meaning anything.

I think the comment about censor dodging was a joke. The mods say to not censor dodge intending to say "don't try to dodge the auto-censor," but the joke is that taken literally people are censoring the word dodge. I think it's funny.

Anyways, the direct starts at 7 a.m. PT or 10 a.m. ET. Use those times to see when it takes place in your timezone.

Of course characters represent something. They are just never what anyone can predict nor are they the things we think should be represented. But yeah, even WTF characters like Wii Fit Trainer represent something. She's not just a nobody Sakurai thought would be fum to play as. Her games are an important part of Nintendo history and represent the era of when games could appeal to non-gamers. Wii Fit sold millions. It makes perfect sense. No one could predict it and it seemed random, but it wasn't.

So yeah. There are reps, but when people talk about reps on here they don't know what or why something will or won't be represented. You can't predict that stuff. You'll only know when it happens.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The Smash fanbase uses "rep" in a weird context that I think comes down to a lack of understanding game design or the fact that it's a game.

It's literally, "This game seemed cool? Needs a rep!", "3rd party series had a game on Nintendo?? Slap a rep on it!", "What's that? It currently doesn't have a character in the game and it's Nintendo owned? Well then, it just needs a rep because reasons of course!"

THAT'S the crap I get tired of seeing, because it's not based on any sort of game design. You're absolutely right that characters in Smash represent games, and that's obviously because it's a mascot brawler. The Wii Fit Trainer is one of my favorites because it not only caught everybody by surprise, but is a very creative moveset in that it uses Yoga and other exercises to beat people up. It's honestly hilarious.

Mainly my whole point for the post was my annoyance with the usage of the word being given no context and literally just used to say, "Add this character for no other reason than to represent something", which would lead to Smash being relatively less compelling or interested in terms of the roster than it currently is.

As much as I wanna brag about predicting Simon Belmont since 2017 in the face of great dissent, I'm hoping he's not the character reveal in this direct. I don't want a leaked character reveal like Ridley.

Hopefully they will reveal Simon in September, the month that Castlevania debuted. I really wanna see King K. Rool as soon as possible if he's in this game.

Man I’d be so happy if Professor Layton would get into smash, even if he was an Assist. Heck i'd probably be okay with most of my wishlist being regulated to non playable role as long as they are in smash.

I have a fun challenge for you all. Imagine if newcomers were revealed in sets of 3, 2 Unique, 1 Echo, and there were 5 sets in total... The 1st was Inkling, Ridley, & Daisy. So there are 4 more sets... how and when would you like these characters to be revealed, & who would be in each set?

There's gonna be some satisfaction from some newcomers a lot of us want, but also some sadness from the inevitable disconfirmations of others that we want, too.

-Uses Downshot to stun opponents (think of how a character is after a shield break), then jumps in to inflict damage and knockback (think of the Prince of Sable assist trophy, but at the end those hit receive knockback.

Sora
-Uses Elemental Magic to damage and affect opponents
-Uses Ragnarok to shoot homing light beams at opponents

Ashley
-Summons a dark cloud that adds random effects to anyone who gets trapped in it.

I doubt that the second most requested and anticipated character as King K.Rool would be releaved so closely after Ridley. Believe me, I want it, but I don't expect it at the very least. I think we might get a less anticipated newcomer, and probably another new Echo Fighter. But that's also playing it 'safe' to be honest. I think we might see a somewhat unexpected, unorthodox newcomer as Wii Fit Trainer at this exact point.

At the very least, I pray that if there is a third party character reveal Wednesday, that they are revealed alongside a first party Nintendo character. That's all I ask.

That being said, if they do that, I'm thinking either King K. Rool & Simon Belmont, or Rhythm Heaven & Heihachi.

Fulgore is like, my most wanted fighter (and one I'll never see happening sadly) ever since I thought; he's fun to use and has a "killer" design.

In case you're back into making icons, maybe a Rash(Battletoads) & Scorpion icon would be fantastic. But as I said, take a break.

Which is exactly why Isaac needs to be in this game!

But for real I get this point. It's difficult for me to separate what I want Smash to be and what I want it to represent and what it actually is. I've always viewed it growing up as a celebration of Nintendo first and foremost, even though it is obviously a game first and foremost. And this is why I've always struggled with seeing certain franchises not represented in a way i felt was right (or not repped at all). Of course it doesn't work that way, but I still like to talk about what I think Smash could be with that in mind, at least in a theoretical sense. And certainly that will always influence my wildest dreams for Smash.

Having said that though, Isaac really fits both criteria imo, even if I'm not confident he will actually be in the game.

"rep" arguments are so stupid. They have nothing to do with the popularity or potential of characters. It doesn't matter if DK has 2 characters and Fire Emblem has 8. Characters should be chosen based on their own merits, and that's why Fire Emblem has more characters than DK to begin with.

I believe Sakurai described the addition of the Fire Emblem characters as "strategic".

I've always pictured a Tails Assist Trophy first having him do a pose and then disappear. It at first feel like he does nothing. But the next time the person who summoned him is hit past the blast zones. They aren't KO'd. Instead, Tails carries your character back onto the stage. Basically Tails being a one time "Get out of a KO" card

Geno. I think he's fine as an assist trophy; many people don't, but I always think he's fitting as an assist. I don't know why exactly.

Brian: Comes forth casting tons of spells that knock around the opponents, probably ending with Avalanche, which is basically something that covers the entire stage, but has a poor hit rate, akin to Onix's Pokeball move, just harder to hit. Does pretty powerful knockback levels.

How are those two statements that different? They are basically the same, except one is about an individual character someone loves and wants to be immortalized and the other is a series someone loves and wants to be immortalized.

Pretty much someone who says they wants "another DK rep" is because they love the DK series and would be happy to have a number of characters from said series on the roster. Or if someone said they wanted an "ARMS rep" it's because they love that game and would accept any one of those characters to represent that game.
