I think in general, people are putting way too many eggs in one basket. We should all at least be prepared for our most wanted to be disconfirmed or not playable.

If you go in expecting your most wanted to be playable, you have absolutely no one to be upset with but yourself. K. Rool not being in (hypothetically) isn’t even Sakurai’s fault. The hype surrounding “Ridley got in, so K.Rool is likely” is entirely said and assumed by the fanbase. Sakurai has never hinted that K.Rool is likely or is on his mind.

Everything is literally conjecture and placing potential meaning that we simply don’t know.

This is the same thing as assuming “Ashely is getting in because she’s popular”, “Elma is definitely in because she’s the latest Xenoblade character”, “BWD is totally in because he’s #4” ...while all these things are nice, we only assume these things are likely because the fanbase places importance on particular aspects of their existence.

Basically, hype train should be fully engaged. But beware that there are still Assist trophies to be revealed, stages to be revealed, Final smashes to be revealed, and obviously newcomers.

Have fun...but please don’t get yourself overhyped.

Sakurai is going for "shock and awe," and third parties are the best way to accomplish that.

I fully expect to get 3rd parties in the game, but 3 Namco reps just seems like too much, personally I don't see Lloyd or Heihachi as particularly awe inspiring characters as far as public perception goes, and if shock and awe is all Sakurai's going for then we might as well put our chips on Goku at that point.

Sakurai also said he's never seen a reaction to a game like the reaction to Ultimate, there was shock and awe everywhere and yeah, returning 3rd parties were a huge part of that, but a character like Ridley is capable of generating just as much excitement.

On top of that, the quote you posted was in reference to Smash 4 DLC where shock and awe was sort of a necessary factor in getting people to purchase the characters and keep the games ecosystem alive. Which kind of explains why 3 out of the 7 DLC characters were third party, literally doubling the initial rosters stockpile of 3rd parties. I can see that sort of thing happening again, but when the initial roster is as limited as many are expecting it to be, I just don't see us getting that much 3rd party representation off the bat.

Characters don’t get in to just rep something. They do that by default. The term “rep” makes it seem as if Sakurai just decides, “Hey, let’s add Petey Pirahna because he’s a giant ****ing enemy and represents a game!”

Stop talking about reps, and more about fun stuff.

Of course characters represent something. They are just never what anyone can predict nor are they the things we think should be represented. But yeah, even WTF characters like Wii Fit Trainer represent something. She's not just a nobody Sakurai thought would be fum to play as. Her games are an important part of Nintendo history and represent the era of when games could appeal to non-gamers. Wii Fit sold millions. It makes perfect sense. No one could predict it and it seemed random, but it wasn't.

So yeah. There are reps, but when people talk about reps on here they don't know what or why something will or won't be represented. You can't predict that stuff. You'll only know when it happens.

Any full roster is going to be treated with similar animosity when the game is released because "x character got in over y character!" and "z character was a shoo-in!"

It happened with Melee, it happened with Brawl, it happened with Sm4sh, and it will happen with Ultimate.

I don't think anyone is denying the fact that people will treat the roster with animosity. Like, it happens with almost any fighting game that had multiple iterations. Take a look at SFV or MvC:I.
Like for instance, most causal players were happy when Pac-Man, the grandfather of gaming, was announced. But I saw so many people into the speculative community were seething over the fact he got in over some of their personal picks. Hell, I think I even saw similar reactions with Cloud and Ryu.
However, getting those characters brought more fanfare as each appealed to a different fanbase.
Everyone has their own personal picks, but the more variety you have from a wide swath of series, the more crowds and amounts of people you please.
Fire Emblem is probably the biggest example of this too, we received three newcomers and a veteran for Smash 4. While that may have pleased fans of that series, many people were loathing that very fact and don't want that series to receive any newcomers as a result.
So getting a wide variety of characters and series represented and playable will obviously please a bigger majority, as opposed to getting two characters from one series or third party.

Am not guessing there will be a super popular character revealed in the Direct. With that, I mean giants as King K.Rool and Geno, mostly them specifically as I don't think there are that much bigger name sakes out there outside of the likes of Dixie Kong, Bandana Dee, Captain Toad, Impa and such. Am expecting a newcomer who's relatively popular like Inkling, but not ground breaking like Ridley, with a potential new Echo Fighter accompanied. Time will tell as always.

Sakurai knows this, the silouette of a character has been a defining element of the series for a long time, the shape of a character matters. But keep googling jontron comeback forum epic i guess

I don't understand your point. I'd say that the roster comprised within that "leak" isn't half-assed. It comprises of:

• The most popular American roster pick for Smash Bros. (Ridley)
• The face of Nintendo's new biggest franchise (Inklings)
• A popular Mario spin-off character (Daisy)
• A representative of the popular Generation 7 Pokemon games
• The new face of the Animal Crossing series (Isabelle)
• The most prominent of the genre-defining Castlevania series (Simon Belmont)
  • Seriously he was so popular he was featured on a TV show with Megaman and Pit to advertise Nintendo during the NES era.
• A character from one of the big 3 JRPGs, known for his prevalence on Nintendo Consoles and for bringing the Tales of series to America (Lloyd Irving)
• And a character from one of the major fighting games of the modern era (Heihachi)

And that's without DLC, which is all new characters.

That's a "crowd pleaser roster" if you ask me. But it may not be to you. That's what I was saying.

Any roster is going to be disliked. When the full roster is revealed and we find out that x or y character didn't make the cut a lot of people are going to be displeased, because the character they wanted didn't make it in. Sakurai can't please everyone. It's impossible.

I have no clue what you mean by "the silhouette of a character...the shape of a character matters," because that has nothing to do with what I was saying, and the point you made about the video I used also has no relevance whatsoever besides making an attempt at ad hominem. I figure that using videos for simple responses does more than just saying it.

At the end of the day I have my opinions and you have yours. I was saying that your opinion of a "crowd pleaser roster" is different from everyone else's because we all have different opinions.

No one believes its a senate it just sucks balls to have your favourite games cucked for over 10 years to whatever flavour of the month series it is. Especially when every 3rd party that people say are in are the most milquetoast option there are.

At this point. I actually want minecraft steve in the game. Theres ground for a unique kit and it shows people what a surprise 3rd party really looks like.

Edit i got surprise replied so i wont double post but all of those characters are good, but as a whole roster, they form a very bland pie. They finally have a game where anything is possible, show us ridley and go with more along the lines of what weve had in smash 4?

Also, for niche franchises, you can't honestly expect them to get 2 rep- I mean characters.
The fact is, for those franchises, they're supposed to represent their franchise as much as they are characters in and of themselves.
