Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Personally I'd prefer if they were echoes so they could have unique taunts and victory animations, one of the things that make octolings stand out in the first place is their more edgy personalities.
I'm not a Splatoon fan so the only Octoling I know is Marina but she's hardly edgy. smh this ****ing race war is making people lie

the octoling 3pack amiibo comes out the same day smash does
I think Japan (and Europe?) gets the Octoling amiibo in November. Not that it really matters though.

I honestly find Octolings to be a perfect Echo candidate - they’ve established their own personality but play exactly like the Inklings. I could totally see a Marth/Roy (Melee) thing happening with Inkling/Octoling this time around, both of a new franchise with one being unique and the other a clone. I guess it all comes down to timing... and maybe the color options clashing with Inklings (though they could just lock them and have you not be able to choose the same colors be it either Inkling or Octoling).

I don't think that the Octolings are getting in. They look too similar to the Inklings. Every Inkling alt has a distinct Ink Color so that in an 8-Player Smash where everyone plays as Inkling, they know exactly what color their Ink is. The Octolings would just throw this out the window.

I love Splatoon

I absolutely loved the Octo Expansion, one of the best games Nintendo has made in recent history and I totally play as an octoling in Splatoon 2.

But I gotta say, I'd dislike if Octolings were anything other than an alt costume. They aren't unique enough to be anything else than that, even in their own game. They're so similar you'd end up asking what the point even is.

Considering how often Echo Fever happens here it's surprising seeing someone forget Echoes are a thing here

They'd totally work as alts but IMO they'd be a missed opportunity since they'd be an easy semi-clone or even a unique character that can implement the other Splatoon weapons.
Semi clones aren't easy. With a development this tight, it makes zero sense to reserve additional time to make what essentially an alternate version of a character a unique character or anything more than a clone.
It's not a missed opportunity since there was no opportunity to begin with.

Uh...Roy played similar to Marth minus the fire gimmick unique to him. You were saying?

Can always give the Octolings darker colors so it won't get mixed up with the Inkling's bright/lighter colors that you see.

But it's not like Echoes and costumes are the same thing.

If they were, you wouldn't have people complaining that Alph isn't an echo, or that Dark Pit isn't a costume.

It might cause confusion between players. Also, the Octolings are too new to be playable.

Nah, Echoes have their own animations in taunts, victory poses, etc, there's more work involved than an alt costume that's for sure.
It really isn't something big. I mean, I'm sure some items require more work.

Aside from wanting King K. Rool and Geno for Smash.
These characters I wouldn't mind at all
MAYU AND MIO
If Mio and Mayu get in, I might need to buy an extra copy of the game to keep sealed and two of their amiibo. I actually think they have a real shot too. They got trophies in Smash 4, Nintendo co-owns the IP, and there have been rumors Fatal Frame 6 for Switch is in the works. They also represent on of the genre blindspots in the roster, would provide a unique moveset, and have that sorta niche cult-classic appeal that arguably got Shulk in (since the series hadn't really entered mainstream yet).

I'm willing to bet that Fatal Frame is at least back in the form of a trophy, if not a stage or assist trophy. A playable character seems unlikely, but I don't think it's much more unlikely than ROB was for Brawl or Duck Hunt was for Sm4sh.

That's what she means by glorified. Echoes are hardly different than alternate costumes but are considered as their own characters. Saying they'd fit as an Alternate Costune but not as an Echo is Hypocritical.

Oh no. A tiny bit of extra work. How dreadful

They're almost the same thing considering how Echoes have very minor changes, if any at all. It's tomato tomahto.

Hey, it isn't though, that's very objectively wrong, otherwise Lucina and Dark Pit would still be alts like they were meant to.

If Octolings do get in, I don't see it being in the base game. I think Octo Expansion is just too new for that. I could see them as a DLC Echo character that's cheaper than the unique ones, and bundled with a new stage based on either Shifty Station or an Octo Expansion level. with an 8-ball as a stage hazard

Your guess is as good as mine
since ridley is clearly in because of ameirca makes sense for japan to get Isabelle. but who does europe get? and central america (no ya'll dont get goku I know how big he is there).
contrary to Americans believe the world isnt just europe, asia and america. if sakurai is going to give regions characters he should do it for more regions. than just two. Although bayonetta may be the european inclusion to sakurai.
Style Savvy sells unusually well in Europe. Come on Savvy Stylist~
The Octolings were already pretty popular in Splatoon on Wii U. I remember seeing speculation/hope that they would be added as DLC ever since the first stage was added. It wouldn't be surprising for him to assume they would remain popular with Splatoon 2.
I remember the hype when they updated the Octoling faces in Splatoon 1, people went crazy over them potentially being playable. I'm not overly hopeful they're going to be there as echoes, but I'd love it if they were. If they're gonna go with the Splatoon 2 designs I hope they add the Splatoon 1 enemy Octo designs in there too.

They could make their Ink colors darker, and while they are relativley new, that fact that echos take so little time to make means they could easily be slapped onto the end of development, especially if only, like 5 of their moves are changed.

It's not a tiny bit at all, lol
Compared to making a new character from scratch, yeah, echos take little time. Unless you seriously think Dark Pit ate up a substantial amount of Smash 4's dev time...

They have fans.
It's a fanservice game.
They are not in anybody's way.

I fail to see why it isn't worth it.

EDIT: But again, Inklings aren't very easy fighters, so they'll probably won't get echoes.

Animating new taunts and victory screens is a tiny bit of extra effort than alts. There's still going to be the same amount of play testing and ****

I’m thinking they could even share the same colors, but just not let you pick a blue Octoling if someone already chose a blue Inkling for the same match etc. I dunno tho.

I see.

I still don't think they bring anything meaningful to the table, they're pretty similar to their Inkling counterparts even in their own game. But I'd not be actively against them, just don't enjoy the idea.

Even adding one character changes the workload down the way, it snowballs pretty hard with trophies, victory screens, testing their properties and whatever else they'll put in this game. It's not like I'm saying it's some HUGE undertaking (that's why they exist in the first place, to be a pretty fast option to fill the roster), but it's definitely more work than being an alt and way more than "a tiny bit"

The Western side of Pop Star.
All I know is Miyamoto was involved with them somehow - he produced them if I'm not mistaken? There's also a fair few games on there that involve Mickey Mouse, from Game and Watch titles to (only listed in Japanese Brawl's Chronicles) Gamecube and N64 titles, clearly paving the way for Sora in Smash.
EDIT: Thought you said Pac-Land. No, Pac-Maze hasn't but Pac-Land has.

It's not like Nintendo has that many licensed games and the Hamtaro games are fairly prolific. We have stuff like Disney games, Popeye and NBA, which while having greater reach, don't have as many Nintendo published titles.
Yeah, that is fair.

Also, at least some of those were even made by Nintendo's second-party studios, including AlphaDream and Pax Softnica.

Finally, to quote TOM: "It's cute."

Adding to that, I'm pretty sure Sakurai's said clones only have to be balanced relative to their source characters, whereas a unique character would need to be balanced relative to the whole cast.

I decided to dive into the realm if (potential) cringe today. I joined a Minecraft FNAF Rp.
7/10 it was ok.

I like Fnaf's lore. Gameplay not so much. And Minecraft i play just a bit.
I feel you can make a good fnaf Building in MC, But this one was all over the place.
Concept: Rusty old pizzeria animatronics but with Nintendo characters.

I mean, you basically need to do the same with every palette swap already in the play testing department right? the trophy point doesn't exactly work that well I feel because if they're an alt they'd get a trophy too

So does one player act as the security guard, 5 act as the animators and 30 off to the side try to untangle the new lore the game introduces?

Im assuming you mean the main game. And yeah, Bassically.
Fend off the ANimatronics till 6. That simple.
Gameplay's pretty lackluster, but at least they're adding new mechanics. But what it lacks in Gameplay it makes up for in story.
If you are a young (And I'm fairly young) People will assume your buyest on things like FNAF. But I'll admit it has its flaws. Overall, I'd say it's a good game though.

You would, just not in the same way. You don't get the Alph trophy for beating classic with Alph.

I don't really have an opinion on Octolings though. Do whatever with them I suppose.

Hey, you just helped prove my point. By saying that those characters could, in theory still be alternate costumes shows that saying an Alternate Costume will work but an Echo won't is Hypocritical. The little bit of work as said by Sakurai is nothing compared to a full character. If he can do it and he feels like tha fans want it he'll do it. Echoes are very much glorified alternate costumes with just a few changes to animation which by the way takes barely any time at all when you have a complete bone structure to work off of. Saying Alph cant be an Echo but can be an Alternate is wrong because if Sakurai wanted to he could make Alph an echo. No big deal. If Sakurai thought that Lucina would work just as well as an alternate costume he could leave her that way. No big deal. If a character can work as an alternate they can work as an echo.

Don't know if this has been talked about before, but I've been interested in this myself, so I thought I'd ask. If Simon Belmont did get in Smash, which design do you think we'd see him in? What design would you prefer to see him in?

Top Left: Classic
Top Right: Chronicles
Bottom Left: Judgement
Bottom Right: Lords of Shadow

I think we'd see the Classic design, though I'd prefer his Chronicles design. Lords of Shadow would be alright, but Judgement just looks awful.
Hopefully Classic, he'll stand out more with that design. Chronicles and Judgement look too anime(He looks like Light Yagami in the judgement design) and there all ready plenty of anime inspired characters. Bet Chronicles will be an alt though, making both crowds happy.

I'd rather see Octolings as a different character, even a semi-clone, but I wouldn't be surprised or upset if they were Echoes.

That being said if they're Echoes then they'd be working on them right now since the Echoes and stuff are made after all the other fighters are made and it's probable that they knew about playable Octolings in time for development. If they end up as DLC then I think they'd be more than Echo fighters.

Too new? Too NEW?!?

Do you realize that Roy's first debut in ANY video game is Melee? Therefore he shouldn't have been in that game because he's "too new"

Your argument isn't really helping with this case bruh. Octolings can make an exception if Sakurai allows it or move them to DLC

Roy was added solely as game promotion.
