Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I'm not too sure about Mappy, not least of which is that Pac-Man stole his gimmick (trampolines) for a recovery. (Just like Villager did to Balloon Fighter).

In terms of Namco Arcades, I'd say Dig-Dug or the lil' Drum mascot from Taiko are more likely.

Yes very much

Blaze is literally the best ''I'm Sonic in a way" character they've invented in the Sonic games.

Shadow is too ''kool" with a k. He reminds me of Venom and Gambit in that they're.....alright, but they're really not all that special beyond a cool concept trying to mimic someone that came before them.

We don't even talk about Silver.

Really her only competition is Mighty. I really do like Mighty and Ray.
Venom's pretty sick though. And has more than edge to him if he's written well. I think Carnage fits that bill more, even though I like him too, he's no Venom or Green Goblin or Kraven.

Don't know if this has been talked about before, but I've been interested in this myself, so I thought I'd ask. If Simon Belmont did get in Smash, which design do you think we'd see him in? What design would you prefer to see him in?

Top Left: Classic
Top Right: Chronicles
Bottom Left: Judgement
Bottom Right: Lords of Shadow

I think we'd see the Classic design, though I'd prefer his Chronicles design. Lords of Shadow would be alright, but Judgement just looks awful.
Classic Simon would be my choice. He's got that Conan inspired look that would set him apart from many characters in the current roster. Though his face could be touched up a bit. I'm sure he'll get a color swap of Red hair and Black clothing though.

Then again, was just a thought.
I just think He'd be a funny character to play as.

If Dig-Dug were to get into Smash, he'd better make this sound whenever he moves:

EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. HE. MOVES.

It would be glorious.

I meant something in the context of, if we weren't getting Simon.

Yeah, Kinda surprised people don't know who he is.

I don't think he has a chance, But he'd be fun.
Mappy: Pacman let me join Smash

Pacman: But then how will I taunt/disrespect people? Nah sorry back into hammerspace you go till the next taunt.

Mappy: Nooooooooooo.

He could've been fun though.

I think it'd be hilarious if we could See Mappy beat up characters like Ryu with his little bat.

That song's already part of Namco Medley 1. Just imagine 8 Dig-Dugs with that song in the background.

It would be like a symphony from Hell.

A chaotic cacophony of clashing sounds.

And I wouldn't have it any other way.

I'm checking around and see if Octoling truly have a chance but it seems that they could have their shot getting in Smash Bros if they are interested enough to get them into.

It could be a similar situation with Melee's Ganondorf.

July 5th, 1999: The project proposal/initial design document for Melee is completed.
August 2000: They finally shown a tech demo of upcoming Legend of Zelda game with Link and Ganondorf battling it out.

Melee's Ganondorf is definitely based on Tech Demo's Ganondorf

Information on Ganondorf's situation

Ganondorf was a special case and was described by Sakurai to be an ‘extremely lucky character’ to have been included in the game. His model was originally made for the SpaceWorld 2000 tech demo and happened to work well with Captain Falcon’s animations thanks to their similar body shapes.

Also Sakurai's comment:

A fan e-mailed Sakurai about the possibility of making King Dedede a clone of Kirby in Melee, to which Sakurai responded: “Dedede as a Kirby clone? I…can’t do that! That’s impossible! When deciding clone characters, the body structure has to be exactly the same.

Octolings and Inkling shared the same body structure, and their heights are similar so it shouldn't be any problem. I honestly think there is only one thing that might held them back from becoming an echo fighter is how complex their movesets were. That's probably same reason why Alph didn't become a clone in first place (I know it could be 3DS limitation at play but still)

I think we'll be getting eleven characters this time around including the ones already revealed. 7 newcomers and 4 Echoes

1) Inkling
2) Ridley
3)
4)
5)
6)
7)

1) Daisy
2)
3)
4)

I personally believe Sakurai didn't give clones new name for the good of his heart he's going to capitalize on giving them a name. So that's why I'm expecting more clones this time around then before
1) Inkling
2) Ridley
3) Elma
4) Simon Belmont
5) Mimikyu
6) Ashley
7) King K. Rool

1) Daisy
2) Isabelle
3) Impa
4) Shadow

I’d include Dixie Kong as well, but I see her more along the lines of a semi-clone rather than a full-on unique character, and I imagine if push came to shove Sakurai would have probably prioritized K. Rool over her.

I feel like we'd get Classic, but the Chronicles one is sexy and it's the only costume I'd ever use if it was an alt (unless Soma Cruz was an alt). The Judgement one is.... trying way way too hard imo. Lords of Shadow is sorta cool, but doesn't scream "Vampire Hunter".

I wonder how long DLC will last this time. Like, Smash For DLC, technically, lasted for around a year and a half with the announcement of Mewtwo in the 50-Fact Extravaganza. I wonder if Sakurai will want to give this game as long of a life as possible or if he'll stop after a certain amount of time.

*Sakurai says Falcondorf is extremely lucky*
:( Sakurai why don't you understand? At least he's the most unique he's ever been.

As for the Octoling I think it all makes sense. It's cutting it a little bit closer than Melee did, but we'll see. I definitely don't want the generic Octoling enemy as a character though, so don't pull the whole Octoling have been in since Splatoon 1. If we are gunna have an Octoling echo I want it based off agent 8.

Knowing Sakurai (and by that I mean taking a shot in dark), I think he'd go with both the Classic design, and the Chronicles design. I prefer the Chronicles design best. As for Light Yagami Judgment... what where they thinking?

At least they got her right eventually XD

Also swords made of flames? Who could say no to that?
Roy and Ike could say no in case they get jealous

My personal wish is that we could get seasons of DLC, somewhat similar to old school expansion packs. I do hope we can have extended support for this game, Sakurai said it himself that it’s going to be hard to top this game, might as well double down on Ultimate and give it some extra content.

I'd be fine with either the Classic or Chronicles look, ideally both if we could get it. LoS isn't bad, but it doesn't really appeal to me relative to the other two designs, and Judgement is... something else.

I do hope for a Richter (along with the other Belmonts) costume though, that was my first Belmont and I would like for him to at least get a reference.

Interesting points. I think people are sleeping on them to make the base roster a bit. I think that it's very possible Sakurai could've added them as a last minute Echo character once the trailer for the Octo Expansion dropped back in Spring. Maybe a last minute thing to pad out the roster and even though he would have no idea what the reception to the Octo Expansion would be, just a simple Echo fighter wouldn't anger too many.

The three echoes we have were pretty popular in their own fandoms, so he might want to see their reception first.

Unpopular opinion: what if the octolings were in...as Koopaling-esque alts?

We know Ridley’s got his Meta coming, which may replace or even add to his current set of costumes. Could the octolings get in as Inkling alts? They’d fit well with black and/or red ink, which isn’t used yet despite red being the P1 standard color.

Just a thought. Not that I’ve got a huge stake either way, I just prefer to be conservative with echoes in the first place.

The Octolings were already pretty popular in Splatoon on Wii U. I remember seeing speculation/hope that they would be added as DLC ever since the first stage was added. It wouldn't be surprising for him to assume they would remain popular with Splatoon 2.

Fixed the confusing wording.
To be fair, this isn't English class

I wanna say we may get the first announcement between December and March and the first DLC between March and June. 2019 and 2020 can space out some of the DLC. So I think they could give us a low number of base roster newcomers then bring up the surprises for DLC

Personally I'd prefer if they were echoes so they could have unique taunts and victory animations, one of the things that make octolings stand out in the first place is their more edgy personalities.

the octoling 3pack amiibo comes out the same day smash does, i know its completely arbitrary but i feel like itd be super weird for them to be in smash and have another amiibo coming out at some point and have this known that same day...

i could see them more as an "alph" alt situation than an echo, perhaps even as costume DLC or something. i dunno, just my own thoughts on the subject based on nothing.

They'd totally work as alts but IMO they'd be a missed opportunity since they'd be an easy semi-clone or even a unique character that can implement the other Splatoon weapons.

I'd perfer this and am kinda surprised it's an unpopular oppinion. To me Octolings don't stand out as much as other echos (Daisy, Lucina) to be worth a second character slot, and yet they stand out less than other alts too (the koopalings, Alph). I think they're similar enough that we can just get one female and one male as Inkling alts. This is coming from someone who hates the concept of alt versions of characters as echoes (Meta Ridley, Dry Bowser etc) so I get it if someone feels differently.

I don't see it happening though, honestly seems more likely we'll get them as echoes.
