Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

So, guys. Would you want Stamina Mode and Coin Fest to come back?
Of course. No reason to not have them come back as far as I'm concerned.

Would you want some changes to those modes?
I agree with what 8-bit Man said. Stamina should have more options available, separate it from the Special Smash mode to allow one to change things up a bit more.

Other than that, I'd kind of like to have more, higher stamina percentages available to select.

Would you want some new fight modes?
I definitely would, but I don't have any ideas off the top of my head right now.

Each game since Melee has had that one unique easter egg where taunting in a specific stage with a specific character gets you a special dialogue. Snake had the codec conversations and Pit got Palutena's advice.

In Smash 5 I'm thinking they could put a new twist on it with an ARMS or Splatoon related stage. In this scenario, Biff or the Squid Sisters would provide color commentary on the match, detailing a character's moves and the things they admire about them. Biff in particular could probably invite characters to appear as guest commentators. The catch to this easter egg is that certain characters must not be in play during the commentary in order for them to appear as guest commentators. So for example, in a 1v1 match between Bayonetta and Palutena on the ARMS stage, Pit (who is not currently being played) would show up to commentate on it alongside Biff.

It's supposed to elicit the same entertainment value as the guest color commentators in WWE. What sorts of funny things would the characters have to say about each other?

its a good idea tho nothing will ever beat Palutena's Guidance in my eyes unless it returns with a 2.0 version :p.

Think it should be splatoon.

Nah, ARMS should be the one to get that type of commentary.

I like Splatoon and all, but long conversations in nothing but squiddish is bound to be annoying, or at the very least a huge downgrade since every conversation easter egg before it had voice acting in existing languages.

Yess, I’m all up for Biff dialogue, he’s a commentator after all, of a fighting game of all things. Would translate well in Smash as well, I think.

In regards to commentary, I always thought it would be fun if on a Pokémon stage, Professor Oak can be contacted and offered to divulage his wisdom on the opponent, even giving them a typing.

And if not that, a Metroid stage interaction where Samus’ visor indicates what the opponent is and threat level in the same vein as Metroid Prime.

Palutena's Guidance couldn't even live up to Snake's codec conversations, IMO. It felt like a massive downgrade.

I feel like it's a bit subjective.

I personally think Palutena's Guidance is funnier, but hearing Otacon and Snake geek out about Falcon Punches was simply too amazing.

I liked both Palutena's Guidance and the Codecs.

Palutena's Guidance was very familiar to people who played Uprising such as myself, which is a good thing because I loved the dialogue in that game, but it was a bit cheesy and even cringy at times ("I hear (Lucina) has a sense of humor"... I'll just leave it at that). The lack of Hades was also a missed opportunity (Though it's understandable since he's... dead.)

The codecs had some things that I didn't understand due to never playing a Metal Gear game, but I loved the dialogue and the tone. Snake also seems to be a pretty likeable character, which is part of the reason why I want him back so badly.

Overall, Codecs > Guidance IMO.

I think my issues with the Guidance stem from the fact that while I played Uprising, the charm wasn't the same. Might just boil down to different writers/translators, but still.

Outrageous thought: I want 1 Player adventure stages mixed with SSE as potential DLC. It could be a never ending story, or war, mixed with RPG-like elements just as equipment and Smash Run work but more gradual. Characters would seriously upgrade their Special Moves with drastic options of changeability which also could bw DLC.

Basically, make Smash the base of the ultimate crossover action adventure RPG that it has the potential to be. Transfer elements over to this to 2 Player Mode and there's a Smash game that's definitely gonna revolutionise gaming. Smash 4 is a good base for this even. Give it a sort of SSE story with insane replay vallue and lots of customisation. The story would have a definite ending tho. Think it has the full potential to be majestic as ****.

Also, ideal for characters as King K.Rool and Ridley to make some sort of grand appearance. I wouldn't be mad at all for K.Rool appearing in this as he needs any sort of appearance desperately. Ridley is unworkable anyway. Might as well just fight him many times over during the story?

On the subject of Special Smash, it should probably be expanded even further in that you can give specific players specific effects, instead of everyone having to have the exact same effects. For an example, player 1 is set to giant-size, player 2 is tiny-size, player 3 is metallic, and player 4 has high gravity.

I have another question: It is possible that a new Smash Bros. gets announced outside of a E3 presentation? Or it will always be revealed first on a E3 event?

Of course it is. As long as it's an event Nintendo would be okay with announcing it at. e3 is a likely time, of course.

I would say only in their two biggest presentations every year.

One being the big January/February Direct the usually do at the start of the year and E3 of course in June.

Those are usually the only two times where big, major games get first announced.

Anything is going to be a downgrade compared to David Hayter grumbling about how Samus took her clothes off.

So... now that Springtron is a playable character, we do have eight potential palettes for Spring Man in Smash without using characters that wouldn't make sense.

4 for Spring Man and 4 for Springtron.

I really don't care for more JRPG characters.

I want more silly and outlandish characters in Smash.

Dante would be cool. He has technically appeared on a Nintendo system thanks to Project X Zone on 3DS. So they could once again pull the Cloud clause.

I had a very heated debate about whether Konami owns Snake or not.
He told me that Konami needs to pay Kojima in order to use Snake because Kojima created him, and I couldn't find anything that backs up his claim.
Does anyone know if it's true or not?

It's false. Konami has full control over Snake. Full control over any other IP that was created under them as well. Example Hideki Kamiya created Dante but he has no stake or claim in Dante.

More proof is that in Super Smash Bros. Brawl only Konami is credited for the character. But with Lucas Shigesato Itoi is credited because he owns some of the character himself.

Pokémon newcomers?

Well, you all know my stance on that. We're almost sure to get at least one if the rumored Smash game has as much new content as we think it will, and getting two new mons is very much on the table.

Especially if that rumor from a couple weeks ago was on to anything. If, for whatever reason, Gen 8 is getting pushed out the door for next year, and if (hard to say) the Smash team was aware of said decision, we could see a Gen 7 mon and a Gen 8 mon get into Smash. There's precedent--Melee added newcomers from Gens 1 and 2, and Brawl's Pokémon Trainer drew his design from the Kanto remakes that were part of Gen 3, alongside Lucario from Gen 4.

Which raises a question: If they split it, who would get the nod? Decidueye + Gen 8's Lucario archetype, if it has one? Lycanroc + Gen 8's Grass starter, if the Grass starter's final evolution allows for it? Or would Gen 8 news have happened too late in development, left for later to be looked at for DLC or the like?

I like how you're not even considering Incenaroar despite him getting a lot of relevance from the latest movie.

There're many more outcomes than just the two listed, but I felt like too long of a list would come off long-winded and undermine the point I wanted to make: that if Gen 8 is on the table, it raises the odds further of the next Smash game having multiple Pokémon newcomers, but makes narrowing down which ones it'd be even more complicated.

Let's not speculate about Gen 8's possibilities. We don't even know what the characters will be... or if that Pokemon Switch game is even Gen 8 to begin with.

Could be that Pokemon Stars everyone talked about at the beginning of the year. :p

That said, if a Gen 8 happens, Gen 7 could also get completely ignored for Smash.

Alright, thanks. I never doubted that for a second myself, just had to make sure because I argued that if Bomberman makes it in then Snake is almost guaranteed to come with him (Not saying either of them is likely though since they're both owned by #****Konami).

Now that DLC has been explored, I can see them holding back on a Gen 8 rep if it's not clear who will be popular.
I'm pretty hopeful for a Gen 7 either way. There are so many popular Gen 7s in a way no Gen 3 or 5 mon compared.

I really hope the fact Sun and Moon were the 20th anniversary games means something to Sakurai.
That and "muh grass starter". :estatic:
it probably doesnt tho

Voted Likely because it seems to me like Nintendo is trying to make Xenoblade one of their bigger IPs. Not "Big 3" big but maybe Animal Crossing big.
Fiora, Elma, Lin, or the new Rex and Pyra. Who is it gonna be?
Fiora is irrelevant. Project X Zone 2 is the only thing she got going for her but I don't think it changes much.
Unless we get a Xenoblade X sequel or port, I don't think Elma is likely, and neither is Lin (Also, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't she a side character?)
Rex and Pyra are the most likely IMO, due to being the most recent (Unless we somehow get another Xenoblade game before Smash Switch rolls around).
