Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

A heist movie theme? a spooky sleepover theme? gengar?

okay...sure...this doesn't scream fan-made at all lol
for real, the only interesting things here are that the company is real so it would take some research to know that and i like that gengar is an unexpected but plausible pokemon newcomer. also the fact gengar is claimed to be translucent and characters now dont move past each other COULD be gengars gimmick being a ghost, just something im guessing at from the "translucent" comment, seems kinda cool to me.

but still only vergeben has my attention as far as leaks go until someone else can show some credibility

Ness and Toon Link can at least run back home in fear and sleep in their mother/Grandmother's bed for the night.

Lucas, on the other hand...

Gengar would be a cool newcomer though. None can deny that.

Gengar would be cool, yes, but I'd honestly be miffed if we got another Gen 1 rep instead of a Gen 7/3/5 rep.

I'd get over it, though.

I've been looking through these character reactions, and I've gotta say, the average opinion on Decidueye has taken a drastic turn. Two months ago, this bird was one of the most hype characters you could support, but right now, I'm seeing a lot of "mehs" and "okays" in this thread. And it's not just here; it was like this in the RTC thread a few weeks ago too.

Something weird is going on. Have people lost interest in Decidueye? Have people lost interest in a Pokémon newcomer in general?
That's because a lot of Decidueye's support was bandwagon based and now that people got their Playable Grass Starter Rep™, a lot of them gave up on Green Arrow because they cared about the Green more than the Arrow.
I know that all too well as the owner of his thread.
Let’s play a little game, choose your most wanted newcomer from each series:
Mario:
Yoshi:
Wario:
Donkey Kong:
Zelda:
Metroid:
Fire Emblem:
Kirby:
Star Fox:
Pokémon:
F-Zero:
Earthbound:
Pikmin:
Kid Icarus:
Animal Crossing:
Punch Out!:
Xenoblade:
Splatoon:
Retro:
Other:
SEGA:
Capcom:
Namco:
Square Enix:
Konami:

For me I’d do this:
Mario: Captain Toad
Yoshi: Kamek
Wario: Ashley
Donkey Kong: Dixie Kong
Zelda: Tetra
Metroid: Dark Samus
Fire Emblem: Lyndis
Kirby: Bandana Dee
Star Fox: Slippy or Krystal
Pokémon: Zoroark
F-Zero: Jody Summer
Earthbound: Kumatora
Pikmin: Alph
Kid Icarus: Viridi
Animal Crossing: Tom Nook or Isabelle
Punch Out!: Doc Lois
Xenoblade: Fiora
Splatoon: Octolings
Retro: Takamaru
Other: Chorus Kids
SEGA: Arle Nadja
Capcom: Chun-Li
Namco: Lloyd
Square Enix: Geno
Konami: Bomberman
Mario: Waluigi
Yoshi: Kamek?
Wario: Ashley
Donkey Kong: King K. Rool
Zelda: Skull Kid?
Metroid: Dark Samus? (unique)
Fire Emblem: Chrom ε
Kirby: Bandana Dee
Star Fox: Andross
Pokémon: Decidueye
F-Zero: Blood Falcon ε?
Earthbound: Giegue?
Pikmin: Alph ε
Kid Icarus: Hades?
Animal Crossing: K. K. Slider?
Punch Out!: King Hippo?
Xenoblade: Elma?
Splatoon: Octoling?
Retro: Takamaru
Other: Isaac
SEGA: Tails
Capcom: Phoenix Wright
Namco: Solaire?
Square Enix: Crono?
Konami: Alucard

Characters with question marks are ones where I really couldn't care less, had to grasp at straws, or legit don't want another newcomer from that series.

You know, I'll give this one credit where it's due, that is one of the few "sources" I've seen that's actually somewhat believable. Accurately describes what someone in that position would be doing.

Which is why its either bull**** or the guy is impressively stupid. "I've fallen ill and have to leave my job, so let me tell you exactly what I did, making it obvious to my previous employer who leaked this information, ruin my reputation with them, and cripple my chances at finding any kind of job in the industry. That'll help pay the hospital bills!"

I do like the concept of Gengar though. Who knows, it's a popular Gen 1 Pokemon, maybe Sakurai decides to add a Pokemon newcomer based on whichever scored higher on the ballot, and Gengar was the one who did?

The first one sounds funny, the second confusing.
Gengar? that trailer could be better if it was Porky... Also, Gengar would be a very, very random choice for a pokemon rep.
But this is obviously false, because saying that he works on effects would make more easy for nintendo to find out who is leaking and get him/her in trouble.
This person knows what is the company that makes the trailers and used that to try to give credibility to the leak.

My thoughts exactly.
"You know, I'm that guy that did that specific thing and I'm also leaving all the info they need to trace me back". You can't be that careless.
Even if you have nothing to lose, you can still be sued, lmao.

As someone watching from the sideline, this was both super predictable and a bit funny. So many people jumped on the type triangle narrative, claiming they actually supported the character (actually arguing with you if you claimed otherwise), then dropped him as soon as PT was shown off.

For your sake (and all the effort you put in his campaign), I hope he makes it in - for my own, well, I hope he doesn’t as it is one of my least favorite starters ever. But to each their own!

Gengar is my favorite Gen 1 Pokemon, but if we get another Gen 1 Pokemon in Smash I'll be massively disappointed, for a lack of a better term.

I don't know about Gengar. I can see other Pokemon getting in before him.

I like the idea of Sceptile being in Smash, although that's probably because a certain green reptilian character is influencing my preferences...

I'd try to forget reps and enjoy the characters but it'd hard for me, even though I grew up with first generations.

On the other hand my favourite Pokémon are generally off the picture for Smash (Misdreavus, Stunfisk, Psyduck) or already in so I don't have a strong new fighter argument.

Not that I expect it but Gengar is honestly much cooler than any of the Generation 7 Pokémon being thrown about in my opinion.

i'm mean i'm still on the decidueye train and i'll support him till the bitter end. i just don't post that often on the character support threads cuz most of them are pretty inactive.

Decidueye just so happens to be both my third favorite Pokemon and the (formerly) most popular Pokemon pick for Smash, by pure coincedence.
My other favorites though?
Well, Chandelure is in Pokken, so I can at least play as it in a fighting game. oddly enough. But considering it was disrespected by being added as a ****ing Smash Run enemy, I wouldn't expect it to be playable even if it was relevant.
Scizor is on the same boat, except replace "Smash Run enemy" with "Pokeball". I'm glad it was achknowledged in a way that felt appropriate at least.
Golisopod is that one Gen 7 Pokemon that would hype me almost as much as Decidueye, but I don't expect him at all.
Krookodile is even less relevant than Chandelure due to a surprising lack of popularity.
Then there's Salamence and Metagross who are literally too big to be playable. Metagross is also a Poke ball mon.
Those are my favorites that I can name off the top of my head. There's also a certain someone else that I didn't mention, but that's because he's already playable! :ultgreninja:

I hope all Smash 4 newcomers make it back but since they'll probably won't... I'm not interested.

Well that means that Impa, as a Sheik Echo, can still be taller than Sheik right? That's good.
It does but she wouldn't be too much taller, as to affect balence.

Lucina and Daisy are shorter than Marth and Peach but not as much so as they are in canon.

That's fair. For me, I don't mind a reboot with a smaller roster to start out. But even just one of the original 12 being cut would hurt a lot. 64 is the only Smash game where I legit played all the characters. They started Smash history together, and to see even just one cut after 20+ years of being playable would suck imo.

I'm on the flipside of the opinion. Gengar is cool and all, but now that PT is back, I'm adamantly opposing a seventh Gen I Pokemon.

Give me any of the Gen VII Pokemon before Gengar.

I think that Spooky Graphic leak is fake but
i wouldn't call the concepts of those trailers unbelievable
we just had Ridley kill Mega Man and M A R I O ON SCREEN

It being for Gengar isn't the point
The point is
after Ridley's trailer more or less being Alien with Samus, a trailer about a haunted house or a heist
doesn't sound so wacky

I really don't want a seventh Gen 1 Pokemon and I especially don't want Gengar. I'd rather have Haunter or another ghost-type. Gengar's design feels like a step down from Haunter to me. From a spooky poison ghost to this weird walking ball with spikes.

Decidueye and Mimikyu are much more reasonable ghost types to go with that have recent popularity.

One of the reasons I refrain from talking new Pokemon newcomers is that it brings out my old furry habits and I just go for certain specific choices.
If you want to look into Pokemon newcomers you need to go and look into what Pokemon Gamefreak and The Pokemon Company have been marketing not the Pokemon you like.

Gengar doesn't sound so farfetched if they are using the ballot for a Pokemon rather than a Gen 7 'mon. Whoever could have topped it has so many variables though. He certainly has a chance of being number uno depending on a lot of factors. That, or he was the top one that could actually be made into a fighter in Sakurai's eyes.

Wolf and Ridley stealing bananas sounds dumb but dope. You'd think Wario and Dedede would be the natural choice there.

I can't see it being real due to the nonsensical reason to unleash the information. I know people are dumb, but that's being unreasonably stupid and them "forgetting" to give someone a NDA would be near impossible considering the tight grip they have on this game.

Heres another one o' dem 4chan leaks:

"Hello, I know this will probably be buried under a lot of speculation, however I am leaving my career after a few years and I've decided to speak about what I know about this game.
A little backstory, I worked for a little animation company called "Spooky graphic". We worked a little bit on the animated trailers for Smash Wii U, and we were asked to help with this new game too. I personally specialise in effects, including for example the dust you see when the characters land in the Duck Hunt trailer. I also worked on the lighting for Mega Man's trailer. Including a Spark Shock move featuring Pikachu that got unfortunately cut.
Because I have only worked on the trailers, I was only ever given what I needed to. I don't have any attack information, and I can't say that there aren't other character trailers being worked on. We were supplied with screenshots and animation references however, to make sure the animation is accurate.
So far, the company has been hired to work on two trailers. The first one appears to be a King K. Rool trailer. The trailer is a comedic take on a heist movie, with Wario, Wolf and Ridley planning to steal a large pile of bananas from Donkey Kong. I mainly worked on the physics for the scroll map, however I did do dust trails for the end of the trailer where King K. Rool is running away with the stash in a wooden cart. I know that at one point he uses a giant cannon (smoke effects) so this is likely one of his specials.

The second and last trailer I worked on is for a character that from what I can tell isn't highly requested, but should cause a lot of excitement. It's a trailer for Gengar. The main theme of the trailer is the haunted house genre, starring Ness, Lucas and Toon Link (in pajamas). It appears to be a sleepover scene, with the kids telling scary stories. The house starts doing strange things, including moving chairs, animating paintings and strange noises. All of these effects use an aura, so I worked quite heavily on this animation. Eventually, both Toon Link and Ness are swallowed by a black void, leaving only Lucas. The wall then grows a smiling face, and Gengar emerges from it.
I wish I could give you moveset information, however that doesn't appear to be possible for Gengar. His character model is translucent however, and that would likely be a feature in his actual character. Other than that, all I can say is that he's in the game.
The reason I can legally divulge this information is actually the reason I am leaving the company. I was seriously ill a while ago, and was out of work for a few months. Those were the months that Nintendo demanded non-disclosure agreements, and I was overlooked. By the time I had left, nobody had asked me to sign anything, so as far as I know I'm under no obligation to keep this secret. The illness has returned, and I am unable to work because of it."

the company he is talking about "spooky graphic" is indeed real and works on nintendo games so theres that. http://www.spooky.tv/

Gengar might've done considerably on the ballot, since Pokken was also released around that time. And Gengar is a pretty popular Pokemon from that game. Which is also why a character from Pokken, or Hyrule Warriors for the matter, shouldn't be counted as out of the question for inclusion. They have popularity going for them, and it where succesful enough games to get a port to the Switch, as well as fighting games, and fan-service was a major theme in both games.

It being for Gengar isn't the point
The point is
after Ridley's trailer more or less being Alien with Samus, a trailer about a haunted house or a heist
doesn't sound so wacky
But there is a big difference. Ridley's trailer was focused on the battle. There was no story, no context, just Samus, Mario and Mega Man in a room hunting something, which attacked them. No details about them organizing the mission, hearing rumours about a space dragon in that area and so on.

Those trailers description are way more complicated. Toon Link in a pijama? A sleepover theme? A heist made by the villains, with the actual character to show just at the end to rub them? Way too complicated for a character reveal. Each second they don't spend building up the actual character is wasted, especially when it is in CGI. All the moves the Inkling and Ridley do in their trailer are in their moveset, but I really doubt Gengar would move seats around.
