Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Shower thought: Team-based victory themes/animations. What could we get, hypothetically speaking?

Say Team 1 is Samus and Ridley. I'd like to hear the Metroid theme sounding dumbfounded with the two not getting along.

This is the only Battle Toad I want to see in Smash:

(okay, but seriously Strikers had some great individual theme music)
Hey! That looks like something Toad does in Smash Ultimate. Peach's new Down Throw has Toad turning upside down to headbutt Peach's opponents.

Thanks for everyone who replied to my post about about 12 newcomers.

Here’s a challenge for you all,
Since the OG12 seems to hold such an importance this time around. Let’s do a 12 Newcomers list. They can be predicted, wanted, or both. Rules are 8 original/unique characters (2 of which have already been revealed in Inkling and Ridley, so you only need 6 more.) 2 semi-clones, and 2 Echoes (1 of which is Daisy, so you really only need 1 more.)

And....GO!
1. Inkling
2. Ridley
3. Bandana Dee
4. King K. Rool
5. Lycanroc
6. Elma
7. Simon Belmont
8. Tap Trial Girl

1. Dixie Kong
2. Isabelle

1. Daisy
2. Impa

Phew, this thread moves fast...

This sounds like fun. So, this is completely 'wanted,' but I would be in absolute heaven...

Original
  1. Inkling
  2. Ridley
  3. K.Rool
  4. Decidueye
  5. Ashley
  6. Urbosa (or a character which involves all four in a transformation style)
  7. Simon Belmont
  8. Dovahkiin
Semi-Clones
  1. Dixie Kong (Diddy, but with hair attacks instead of rocketbarrels)
  2. Tails (Sonic, but with tail float uspecial)
Echoes
  1. Daisy (Peach)
  2. Isabelle (Villager)

Here's a question for you Zelda fans out there.
:ultlink::ultzelda::ultsheik::ultganondorf::ultyounglink::ulttoonlink:

I'm going to list some potential Zelda characters.

I want you to say how likely you think they are and how much you want them and why.

I won't be using deconfirmed characters like Midna, Tingle or Ghirahim. Sorry.

  • Marin
  • Darunia
  • Ruto
  • Impa
  • Skull Kid
  • Fierce Diety Link
  • Vaati
  • Tetra
  • King Daphnes
  • Medli
  • Toon Zelda
  • Toon Ganondorf
  • Agitha
  • Zant
  • Linebeck
  • Byrne
  • Fi
  • Groose
  • Demise
  • Ravio
  • Hilda
  • Yuga
  • Lana
  • Cia
  • Linkle
  • Volga
  • Wizzro
  • Urbosa
  • Revali
  • Daruk
  • Mipha
That should cover everyone...
The only ones who I think even have a chance are Skull Kid and possibly the Champions as uniques, or Impa as a Sheik echo. I'd love Volga, but he needs to be canonized in the series first (so cool though!) I don't know if the champions are possible alone since they are a four-for-one deal, but it'd be interesting. The rest...eh.

Skull Kid's still big since Majora's Mask was now, what 18 years old? And it's still being talked about. It was a really fun game, and even if Young Link gets Trifoce Slash as his Final Smahs, I think everyone's hoping he at least puts on the Fierce Deity mask first. Skull Kid could do a lot with the fairies and summoning puppets like he did in Hyrule Warriors.

I favor Urbosa the best out of the champions since she's got an amazing personality, but I'd really like to see all four of them done. I had an idea in the Smasher's Ballad thread about them acting as a transformation within a single character (see link above), which would be the best way to represent all four together.

K. Rool being the main villain in a DLC of a Mario game was never gonna happen anyways.

Especially when the game is about the RABBIDS. Of course a RABBID version of Donkey Kong that hates Rabbid Peach is the final boss you fight multiple times.

Reminds me of the Jotaro/DIO teamup winning quote being an awkward moment.

I'm pretty sure it's because he appeared on the Great Bay stage, though that doesn't seem like 100% confirmation that he won't be playable. There's a few cases, like with Toon Link or (if Pyrosphere returns for Smash Ultimate) Ridley, where characters can be playable while identical descendants/clones are stage elements. It seems to hurt Tingle's chances regardless, but you never know. (unless his assist trophy returns)
Is there footage of him on Great Bay? I didn't even now that the stage was playable at the events the demo showed up at, lol.

That's such a bummer though! While I know it's not a straight up deconfirmation for the reasons you listed, it's still not great news. Oh well, here's hoping he still makes it in somehow!

Does anyone know if the type effectiveness mechanic for Pokemon Trainer is gone? I know that the Stamina one is gone, but I haven't heard anything about the former, which make me scared since Ivysaur would suffer the most again if that mechanic was still here.

  • Volga
  • Wizzro
  • Urbosa
  • Revali
  • Daruk
  • Mipha
That should cover everyone...
Excuse me, but where is Prince Sidon!?

That's quite the list. I don't feel like many of them are worth rating now that Midna and Ghirahim are disconfirmed, so I'll just list the ones who I feel like have a genuine chance to be considered.
  • Impa
  • Skull Kid
  • Tetra
  • Toon Zelda
  • Urbosa
  • Revali
  • Daruk
  • Mipha
Impa - I'm not sure how I feel about Impa's chances. I don't think her odds have really improved. Clone characters have always been on the table, so I don't know why people are acting like she's more likely now than she was back in Smash 4 when OoT3D and SS was fresh and new. Even as a unique fighter, I'd still say she should be less of a priority than others, mainly because Sheik is on the roster and there are so many more iconic and unique choices Sakurai could go with (Tingle, Skull Kid, etc.) Honestly, I feel like people are overestimating her just because she's recurring and because clone fighters got an official name.

Skull Kid - Don't see how people can be so optimistic with his chances when Midna was in an identical position and still got disconfirmed. Regardless of the MM remake, I don't think Sakurai would randomly revisit an old GameCube game when looking for Zelda newcomers. I'm preparing myself for an AT reveal any day now.

Tetra/Toon Zelda - If we're talking about Tetra, don't see it happening at all. If we're talking about Toon Zelda, then I think she might have a shot, but only because there's no other Zelda character who would work better as a clone than her. Then again, nothing was stopping Sakurai from adding Toon Zelda as a clone in Smash 4.

Champions - All four of these guys avoided a disconfirmation at E3, yet people seem to have more faith in Skull Kid just because he was one of the many ATs not seen. Don't know why people are writing these guys off when they weren't part of Link's Final Smash, weren't part of Zelda's new specials, weren't made to be cameos in the BotW stage, and weren't seen as ATs despite there being four of them. I know I'm in the minority, but I still feel like these guys are our best bet at a unique Zelda character. As for the order I would expect them, I'd say Mipha > Daruk > Revali > Urbosa. The Zora and Gorons have a much longer history than the Gerudo, and I don't feel like Urbosa would be the most unique choice (by comparison) since she carries a sword for her weapon instead of a spear or sledgehammer. Revali is a weird case. He's arguably the most unique of the four, but the Rito are the least iconic (not to mention how much controversy he would bring if he got in over Mipha or Urbosa).

Don't want to be a bummer but that kind of "background element doesn't deconfirm" situation has only happened for a returning veteran. Smash loves keeping it's newcomers secret and I doubt they would ever show a newcomer in the background of a stage before revealing them as playable. I'm personally sure that Pauline and Tingle are out of the running because of this.

Anyway it's probably safer to not expect them if you wanted them, this way in case Sakurai pulls the whole Alfonzo thing for them too you can be surprised.

Exactly. I championed for Duck Hunt Dog to be a playable fighter in Smash for 12 years when no one else would (or at least that's how I felt back then). :4duckhunt:

Now that I finally have my dog, I am championing for my cat. :052:
I remember after Melee came out, my best friend and I wrote a document called "The Hypothetical Super Smash Bros. 3". The Duck Hunt Dog was one of our main choices, alongside Meowth, Toad, Wario, and "Kid Icarus"). I think it also included "that cat girl from Star Fox", Donkey Kong Jr. monkey, Sonic, and Tails.

And....GO!
This is gonna be mostly wants rather than predictions, so here are my admittedly odd ideas for Smash:

Newcomers:

1. Inkling
2. Ridley
3. Bandana Dee
4. Rabbids
5. Ashley
6. King K. Rool
7. Skull Kid
8. Dr. Eggman

Semi-Clones:

1. Octoling (Inkling Semi-Clone)
2. Dixie Kong (Diddy Semi-Clone)

Echoes:

1. Daisy
2. Isabelle (Villager Echo)

Tingle can be seen here.

I'm gonna have to agree with Imadethistoseealeak Imadethistoseealeak on this. Since Tingle is an interactive element on Great Bay, I feel like this is essentially a disconfirmation of the character. Perhaps SSBU will find a way to work around this, but for now, no newcomer has ever been shown off like this only to be upgraded to a playable character.

Just to be sure, did anyone tested that? Or did someone at Nintendo confirm it?

Not doubting you here, but I like to be sure

Additionally Skull Kid potentially has the ballot to help him, while the Champions obviously don't. I expect Skull Kid to just be an AT again like Midna, but until it does get revealed I think he still has a chance for reasons stated prior.

I'm running low on characters I want in Smash. Especially considering the timeframe for newcomers is late 2015, early 2016 (barring clones).

I could name several characters I want, but there's a very small few I really, REALLY want (Ashley, K. Rool, etc.), and even then, Ashley is the only one I'd truly be sad didn't make it in.

I can’t recall who on here wants Joker from Persona, but if you could step forward and explain as to why, I’d love to know.

I just don’t know much about the franchise or the character, and I’d like to understand more.

Duck Hunt Stage’s dog still exists though, and it isn’t even replaced by something else if anyone’s playing as Duck Hunt, not to mention this can’t be excused in a canonical sense since there’s only one dog in Duck Hunt... sure, we found out about the character before we found out about the stage, but yeah.

(Also, to be pedantic, you don’t interact with Tingle at all on that stage, you interact with his balloon only, they could put anything else of about the same size there and it wouldn’t alter its function.)

I predict we will not get a Zelda newcomer this game, but somehow Skull Kid wouldn't surprise me. I have no idea how well he did on the ballot though, considering the AT.

Zelda needs to have a character that Sakurai sees as worth adding to the game, not a "Zelda rep." :p

To be honest, same here. There are ideas I like, but as far as things I really want, there's maybe only two or three characters that would get me more excited than simply thinking "Huh. Neat." if they got in. Ashley and Bandana Dee are the only characters left on my hype list that haven't gotten confirmed as non-playable yet, so I'm still holding out some hope.

...Knowing my luck, Ashley's Assist Trophy will probably be shown off tomorrow...D:

CHALLENGE

I challenge you all to create a newcomer roster of 15-17 characters, because those numbers are in between the amount of newcomers Melee and Brawl had. 10-12 of them have to be unique and the rest have to be echo fighters (2 of them can be Semi-Clones however).

We got our first look at the Champions at the January 2017 Switch presentation. Assuming Sakurai had never seen the Champions until then, that's still nearly two years before SSBU's release date. After seeing how incredible BotW turned out to be, I wouldn't be too surprised if Sakurai felt like a Zelda newcomer from that game would be worth considering. As far as putting them on the roster, all four Champions are equally important, and I don't see why he should feel obligated to add all of them as individual characters. From my perspective, it should be as simple as Sakurai just picking the Champion he think would be best for Smash.

Although, I'll admit that Skull Kid has the advantage of popularity. The Champions were so new back then that popularity wouldn't have been a factor that would've helped or hurt their chances.

I did, because I wasn't a fan of Twilight Zelda (or Twilight Princess in general) and much preferred the Wind Waker characters.
Now that they changed Zelda's design to the A Link to the Past/between worlds version, I'm more or less satisfied as far as Zelda goes. Especially since the A Link to the Past/Between Worlds design is my most favourite version of Zelda yet.

Inkling
Ridley
Geno
King k rool
simon belmont
Pokémon rep
Ashley
Rythem heaven rep

Semi clones
Dixie kong
Isabella

Echos
Daisy
Dark samus

Is what I would do
This is what I would go with too except replace Geno with Captain Toad and add Bandana Dee in place of Rhythem Heaven.

My only issue with it is its a bit too safe but I don't care about that personally. I just recognize a few others would find the list boring (we already got Ridley its fine).

It's more likely that Sakurai would add the Champions as AT's, if anything. But I don't think that happens, nor do I think they'd make the Main Roster. DLC perhaps, but remember that if the first project plan was done by December 2015, even a revised plan in mid-2016 would mean no Champions. Same goes for the people that want Rex/Pyra and Spring Man.

I think people are just jumping through hoops to try to claim that the Champions are main characters or would be on Sakurai's radar just because they're desperate for a Zelda newcomer. None of the champions are on the level of say... Rosalina in Galaxy 1, or Palutena in Uprising, when it comes to being noteworthy supporting characters. Or even previous Zelda one-offs like Midna. And I don't personally believe Sakurai would change the roster for them; he made a point that doing so with Sonic delayed the game.

Zelda is just stuck in a nebulous limbo with characters. I don't see Sakurai attempting to add one for the sake of expanding the franchise's ranks.

I can’t recall who on here wants Joker from Persona, but if you could step forward and explain as to why, I’d love to know.

I just don’t know much about the franchise or the character, and I’d like to understand more.
It was me, I put him in as one of my unique newcomers in your game and uh...I just want the Persona 5 music XD. I really don't care for the character but I do love the aestethic and I think he could have a flashy, anime like fighting style. Actually I imagine he'd fight simialr to Bayonetta, especially since he also uses a "gun".

But yea I don't know much about the character but love the series aestethic and music. Sorry not much help lol.

Just speaking for myself here, it actually doesn't have to do with the having the same character thing. Like if we got Pyrosphere back with Boss Ridley it wouldn't bother me, like this game is non-canon and you can have 8 Mario's fight each other. Seriously never understood why that mattered.

However, we have never had a newcomer been shown before being revealed as a newcomer...outside of Dark Pit which I will concede on, however he was still in a reveal trailer. It's super anti-climactic and very un-Sakurai to reveal a background or stage hazard character and then reveal them as playable. So yea Duck Hunt Dog is fine because his stage was revealed in his announcement trailer. Idc if Tingle fights on top of another Tingle's balloon, but it's real weird they would show the stage hazard first.
