Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I don't know why people even want Geno in Smash. He's a niche character from a SNES game that the general consumer doesn't even know existed. He also faces competition from Sora for the second Square rep, if there even is a slot for one.
Haven't played Smash for Wii U have you?

I don't know about you guys, but I really like his opinions and views.
Yes, some of them are deconfirmed already, but he does not care, and it is the original creators views, but for the viable options, some of them are really great, at least if you were a Smash fan from Pre-Brawl, and is more into Nintendo owned characters, figured I wanted to share it.

Wow, each day on here it’s a different topic either it’s new or a repeat.

By the way... What classic character you guys think we’ll get for this new smash?
Either Mach Rider, Star Man, or somebody completely random like Bubbles.

I've never thought of this before, but could a third party count as a retro rep?
As in, if we got Geno or Bub/Bob, would they could as retro reps for the base game?
That's possible, though it depends on whether or not the NES gets nothing else this go round.

Here's the thing. If he tried getting Geno in Brawl, why did he skip over Geno for Cloud in Smash 4? Geno obviously had a lot of support, and his inclusion would certainly make a lot of people happy.

I'm sure there's plenty of characters Sakurai would like to see, but just because he publicly makes a comment on a character during one Smash game doesn't mean they're guaranteed in the next game. Yes, Geno is popular, but so is Dixie, and Impa, and Waluigi, and Captain Toad, and Bandana Dee, and Elma, and dozens upon dozens of other more relevant choices.
https://www.facebook.com/#
People need to understand that popularity itself does not gauge how likely a character is. It took Ridley nearly two decades to get in Smash, nd he was consistent in both popularity and Metroid appearances. Would Geno, a random Mario character who hasn't technically done anything noteworthy since his debut in a spin-off game, really be one of the few newcomers Sakurai chooses to add for this Smash? Personally, I don't think so.
There was no way geno would be the first and only square rep.

Cloud is the face of final fantasy, final fantasy IS square, it had to happen this way.

Not only that but knowing now that smash ultimates been in development since 2015... IF geno is in then the whole thing makes sense, sakurai DID get Geno right away, he just saved him for smash ultimate and added a mii gunner costume in smash 4, you cant do this the other way around; save cloud for smash ultimate and add a cloud mii sword fighter costume for smash 4? that doesnt really work, ALSO then people would be saying a final fantasy rep/cloud was obvious for this next game etc... geno being saved for smash ultimate makes so much more sense.

Should we perhaps look at all the Mii Costumes we got in Smash 4 more carefully then?

No matter how strange some of them are.

I wouldn't underestimate how big the fan demand for Geno is though. I knew of him as "that one guy people want in Smash for some reason" years before I knew what Super Mario RPG was and years before I started looking at Smash specific forums. It's rare for a character in a niche game to become so popular that mainstream is aware of who they are.
I'd personally argue that for as popular as Geno is, Banjo is even moreso. But that's just me.

Anyone know what is going on here? Is he teasing something or is he encouraging MK newcomer support for Smash?
This is all getting face time. I remember back for the Injustice or MKX speculation periods, people would pick apart every thing he tweeted as 'confirmation' for every character imaginable. Obviously, that didn't pan out.

This reminds me of everyone thinking everything Yacht Club said in tweets confirming Shovel Knight.

While I wasn't following him until the end of Injustice2 speculation, I do find it interesting, it probably won't happen admittedly, but it does poise a chance, and is a good topic to discuss if he does get in.

The tameness of MK vs DC is one of the things that felt odd, but hey Bayonetta and Snake would welcome another M rated franchise.

Of all western developed games, Mortal Kombat won't be the first added to Smash, if any.

Over here it's the counterpart to Street Fighter, over there KOF is the counterpart.

Peach has used magical abilities in the RPGs.

Her float is inherently magical as even cartoon physics doesn't explain a dress beinf able to perfectly scale gaps in a horizontal fashion.

She's always had good, pure magic, as that was explained as a counter to Bowser's dark magic, I believe.

All Daisy has is the spin-offa so whatever sje doea is probably canon to her due to consistency at this point.

Rosalina, I'm sure I don't have to go into this one.

Pauline, well, she has a magical voice
Given all that, if Pauline made it in somehow, she would be the most normal of the Mario ladies.

Should we perhaps look at all the Mii Costumes we got in Smash 4 more carefully then?

Federation Force marine confirmed! Nah, I kid, no one would want that.

AND in a dress. Is there anything that woman can't do?
Not getting kidnapped by Donkey Kong? Showing up in spin-offs to do activities alongside him would be a start at this point, the poor gal couldn't catch a break before Odyssey happened.

Tekken.

For as much as I love KoF and SNK, it's fallsn into irrelevancy over the years.

Dude I'd love Terry Bogard to get his engrish on in Smash but, well yeah I agree with you unfortunately.

Also speaking of Tekken we did have that Heihachi mii costume...

Since Smash provides free advertising/money for third parties, SNK would be wise to let Sakurai borrow Terry or Marco, in turn making people more aware of their games. They don't know what they're missing.

As for Heihachi, he's gotta get in someday, alongside one of those Virtua Fighter characters.

Peach has one of the most useless final smashes. So it'd be nice to see it changed.
Peach Blossom is not totally useless, considering the amount of damage that it deals. And of course, it also affects airborne targets.

But since Peach can't KO anyone with her Final Smash, that can be a problem for a fighter who doesn't have very many KO move options.

Again, there's the arsenal aspect, look at all the **** you can use in Uprising, if Sakurai wanted Pittoo to be unique, he'd have those weapons. It's why I think Dark Pit's got the case of "Could have been more unique"
Yeah, but he also uses a “simple” bow for important battles when he’s given a choice on his own (also for important battles), just like Pit. Sakurai probably saw Dark Pit to be as unique as Pit is, so he made a literal clone who just happens to be edgy into an echo fighter to keep his fighting ways in tact (as in no matter what, they always fight the exact same way). That’s as unique as he’s gonna get unless there were to be a Kid Icarus sequel where he starts fighting and tasting styles differently from Pit.
Backing this up. As a magically created copy of Pit, Dark Pit has the same training base as Pit.
To expand on my point about Pit and Dark Pit picking the same weapons, maybe it went like this:
:ultpit:: "Hmm... Electroshock or Upperdash? Which should I pick?"
:ultpalutena::"Personally, I recommend the Upperdash Arm!"
:ultpit::"Yeah! You're right! You're so smart, Lady Palutena."
:ultpalutena::"Heehee, I try."

And...
:ultdarkpit:: "Hmm... Electroshock or Upperdash? Which should I pick?"
Viridi: "Go for Electroshock! It'll really pack a punch!"
:ultdarkpit::"Sure, whatever."
Or maybe Pit would have gone for the Electroshock Arm had Palutena not stepped in.
This is probably exactly how things went as they prepared for Smash...though of course if I were to have been Palutena, I’d tell Pit to bring either the Hedgehog/Beam Claws or the Violet Palms as an additional weapon (for dash attacks or grabs of course)

I don't think that there will be that many characters from traditional fighting games.

Okay, I wrote up something about the positives and negatives of a few characters' chances. Sort of like a Pseudo Rate-that-character thing:

Feel free to make your own points, or talk about another character in the same way, or correct me on anything you think is out of place.

Disclaimer: While this is mostly an opinion piece, I don't necessarily believe the things I say in this. I'm trying to be objective in it.

First Party Characters
Dixie Kong (Donkey Kong Country)
Positives: "Relevant" due to the resurgence of Donkey Kong Country in “Returns”, one of the most popular DKC characters back in the 90s. Has unique moves separating her from DK and Diddy.
Negatives: Really? Not that much.
King K. Rool (Donkey Kong Country)
Positives: The primary villain of Donkey Kong Country's original three games and it's TV show. DKC was explosively popular on the SNES.
Negatives: Hasn't been seen (outside of Smash) since Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast in 2008.
Neutral: The fact that he would be another heavyweight villain could be seen as either a positive or a negative.
Isaac (Golden Sun)
Positives: Comes from one of the best selling games on the GBA (it competed with Mario, Pokémon and Zelda), there aren't really any GBA-specific representatives (Toon Link and Zero Suit Samus are about the limit, but they aren't associated with the GBA). Oodles of moveset potential.
Negatives: Hasn't been seen since Dark Dawn in 2010. Has minor overlap as a “Red Mage” Fighter with Robin.
Ashley (Wario Ware)
Positives: A popular character from WarioWare. Pure magic users are rare in Smash, so she'd definitely be unique.
Negatives: Moveset potential might be a minor hurdle (but it's there).
Third Party Characters
Being a third party is both a positive and a negative, the hype from their inclusion could balance out the rights issues.
Simon Belmont (Castlevania)
Positives: Castlevania was one of the defining games of the NES, and the series is still around today. After Snake and Bomberman, he's probably the next in line for a Konami character.
Negatives: Nothing much, really?
Geno (Super Mario RPG)
Positives: Frequently requested according to Sakurai, and has some moveset potential as a Gunner character.
Negatives: Has only been in one SNES game, which wasn't even released in Europe until the New 10s (and since that release was on the Wii U, that means not many people would have bought it even then).
Crono (Crono Trigger)
Positives: With Takamaru and Lyn gone, he might be our last hope for a 'Samurai'/Katana-wielding character (unless you want Ryoma, but really, why would you want Ryoma over CRONO?)
Negatives: Chrono Trigger, while a much beloved SNES game, hasn't been seen since 2008/2009.
Miles "Tails" Prower (Sonic the Hedgehog)
Positives: One of the most well known Player 2 characters and Sidekicks in Video Game Culture. Has unique traits that make him different from Sonic.
Negatives: Like Dixie and Simon, not really all that much?
Shadow the Hedgehog (Sonic the Hedgehog)
Positives: An easy Semi-Clone of Sonic, being so similar in stature and attributes. Sonic Adventure 2 was the first cross-platform Sonic game.
Negatives: Has competition from Tails, who is arguably more 'worthy' of inclusion.
Ken (Street Fighter)
Positives: An easy Echo Character for Ryu. It's, like, super obvious.
Negatives: Would Sakurai feel justified making a 3rd party character an Echo Fighter?

imean peach beat zelda on deathbattle. dont know what it really means but it is SOMETHING
That's because canon Zelda hasn't done much besides arch and seal, with supporting stuff like healing and opening doors with magic. Comparatively, Peach's is more combat applicable and she's had way more appearances where she's actually fought compared to Zelda.

That was their main points, but it seems it left lots of people butthurt.

It'd be Kyo or Iori if SNK got anyone, their popularity eclipses everyone elses. As much as I hate to admit that since I find both rather dull.

Truth, no, no one can argue with me on this I'd say other than Eggman he one of the most important characters in the Sonic series.
