Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

so since sakurai hopes that we dont expect too many characters, does that mean we wont get any DLC fighters then?
I wouldn't pay *too* much attention to that. I'm certain we won't get nearly as MANY as Wii U had, but I imagine there's still a decent number to show. It'd also be crazy for them to not want DLC for the game. Let's cross that bridge when we get to it.

tl;dr, Sakurai says a lot of things.

Edit: Thanks!

I think he meant "don't expect too many newcomers in the base game".

DLC is different, and much less work-intensive, I don't doubt he wouldn't at least considered doing DLC.

Ninty has been on-point with Switch DLC with BotW and Xenoblade, so I kind of feel like Smash U DLC is close to guaranteed. They just won't talk about it until after release again.

Smash 4 DLC was hype so I can't even begin to imagine what crazy stunts they pull off this time.

Cloud's reveal is still the best Smash reveal in history.

I think Ryu's reveal would've been on par with Cloud's in terms of sheer surprise and hype if it hadn't been leaked beforehand.

DLC feels like a no-brainer to me, it's guaranteed to sell. Furthermore, since there are no more missing veterans, all of it will be new, fresh content.

Edit: Also, I know this is off topic, but does anyone know how I can get my posts to display SSBU Ganon instead of Smash 4 Ganon? I've tried messing with my account settings over and over.

Maximillian Dood's reaction still gets me. "Calm the f*** down, Sakurai!"
"This is impossible! That **** is not real! That trailer is ****in' fake!"

I imagine Sakurai being bummed about Ryu leaking, then getting the okay from Square about Cloud and being all

''Oh you ******* don't even know. You have got something coming your way. Oh you stupid stupid stupid people. You don't even know."

And laughing maniacally.

Anyway, on the real topic, DLC for this game is practically guaranteed. They've been supporting so many Switch games with DLC, they supported Smash 4 with DLC and it sold hella well, Sakurai has gone on record stating that DLC is less intensive on the dev team than the base roster, it's a no-brainer.

Honestly, at this point, it's pretty clear to me what happened.

Somehow, a small group of people saw the E3 trailer early, and it would not surprise me if Verg's source were in that Group(Forgive me for not knowing the name, but I've seen it brought up here several times in the past).

How they saw the E3 trailer early, I have no idea, but there's been a lot of hints to it, from that one gal(Emily I believe), to that 'joke' in that one Gamexplain video, it's wayyy too much of a coincidence at this point.

As for Verg, his initial source was more likely than not one of these people, while his second source probably fed him the Simon and Minecraft info, which seems to be mostly false now.

Opinions, vaanrose vaanrose ? You more likely than not don't know anything about this specific leak, but you've been in those shoes in the past. How likely do you think it'd be for a group to get this info and keep it to themselves?

Hey all this Yoshi talk reminds me...

I feel like there should be way more items in Smash from Yoshi's Island. The winged cloud would be a very fun container item that you have to chase down, the different watermelons would be fun to pick up (I've always wanted the regular Watermelon Seeds to be in Yoshi's set), and... well, those items anyways would be fun for Smash. Maybe a big, heavy Chomp Rock you can throw?

This. He backpedaled hard. He was super confident it was Castlevania and then said it wasn't and just the sports game.

Now he just keeps saying the Castlevania games and Simon are still coming. It just sits and rings wrong with me.
Hype as they may be, these rumors hurt my brain with all the evidence against them.
On an unrelated note, does anyone know Snake's alias when in the boxing ring? He's the only demo character I've seen without it.

I believe Verge claimed his Ridley source said Simon as well right? So if Simon is false. He either made this all up and got lucky on the Ridley front.

Or the source fed him half truths.

I think it was "CHILL THE F*** OUT, SAKURAI! OH MY GOD!"
Yeah, that.

The man spoke for all of us that day.

Now, speaking of Cloud, assuming Zack is an echo/alt, who would be a better Assist Trophy, Sephiroth or Tifa?

I think I know the answer already, but it's worth asking. XD

Not gonna lie, Sephiroth would be a great actual character, like an unholy fusion of Meta Knight and Marth.

Completely off topic, but something been on my mind.

I recently decided to go back and look at the reactions of the Final - Nintendo Presentation for Smash 4, where we got Bayo and Corrin.

And the level of salt/disappointment was so incredibly high. Like people were literally enraged that Bayo made it over the likes of Wolf/Bandanna/K.Rool/Ridley/Dixie. So many people had set themselves up with what were considered shoo-ins, mostly due to the 6+ years of speculation, and all that speculation was shut down with the DLC.

And now that Ultimate is happening and the same usual suspects are being hyped up as the shoo-ins, I can't help but get an.... ominous feeling.

I mean this time Ridley happened, one of the dreams, and that would indicate that this is the game where all the age old fan favorites are being considered. But it's not like Smash 4 didn't have it's fair share of indicators for fan favorites (Megaman mainly)

Basically I just hope that if Ultimate isn't the game a lot of the speculators are expecting it to be (Lyn, Knuckles, Waluigi, and Krystal...) that people will still be able to accept Ultimate as probably the best roster the series has ever gotten.

Believe it or not, I can't help but feel that Smashboards can tend to be an echo chamber Sakurai only ever slightly hears on the wind from a far far distance.

Well, I mean, to be fair... Everyone and their mother puts Ridley on a Smash Bros leak because they know it's what the people wanna hear.

I like Max, but him and Simmon's reactions always feel.... I dunno, pre-recorded to me? It feels reeeeally hokey in their Bayonetta reaction.
Oh yeah, their Bayonetta reaction felt forced as hell. But I firmly believe Max's Cloud reaction was 100% real.

I remember sitting across my friend/roomie who loves Final Fantasy 7 more than I ever could.

I screamed out ''CLOUD?!" randomly and he looked at me all ''o_O"

''IN SMASH BROTHERS!"

That and how actual professional media outlets for gaming broke down and literally had curse words in the title of their announcements because they were in a hurry to get the article up and were still hype themselves will always stay with me.

That day Sakurai really did break the internet.

I was surprised that more people (read: reactors) didn't recognise the iconic Final Fantasy VII opening. I did, I would have recognised it even without the audio.

Disclaimer: I am fully aware not everyone has played Final Fantasy VII.

There were a lot of fan favourites in Smash 4: Palutena, Lucina, Shulk, Rosalina, Bayonetta... Yeah, Smashboards sometimes can ignore characters that became popular after Brawl. Thankfully, it's not like that recently.

Yeah, the Bayonetta one felt really off
I really never understood that sentiment.

My feeling from that video was that it was actually recorded live, similarly to most of their reactions.

In fact I'd have to check but I'm like 90% sure they streamed that while they reacted.

I didn't feel their Bayonetta reaction was faked at all.

It felt very genuine and accurate to me and was pretty similar to my own.

You mean push, right? I don't recall Chomp Rocks being throwable. And I kinda have credibility on this...
I'm just worried a pushable-only object might be a bit annoying in a fight, plus I'm sure someone like DK could pick one up. Might be better as a stage hazard than an item, to keep the pushing aspect intact.

Some people felt like Simmons was looking over at the computer monitors too much to look at the stream chat's reaction, and that's why it felt insincere.

I'm sure I'm not the first to bring up the question, but how are doubles matches going to be handled now?

Seeing as the damage output in singles matches has a multiplier of about 1.2x, will doubles matches also be played at a 1.2x multiplier (or whatever it may be) for the sake of consistency? Or will the dynamic of the match be entirely different - players learning when moves kill in singles vs doubles, etc.?

I'm pretty sure they'd all have to push them, even DK and the like. Items and stage hazards tend to be treated equally for all characters

I recognized the Final Fantasy 7 music, but just...didn't really think to connect two and two together.

I think for a lot of gamers it was a slow on the uptake sort of thing because your brain just wasn't willing to process what it was about to see/happen.

I mean, you also have to consider if someone's never actually played FF7, they wouldn't recognize it.

*Raises hand*
Final Fantasy VII's pretty good (not the best RPG in the world, but it's popular for a reason).

That's... a really good point, actually.

I mean I am absolutely not a frequent user of the site, more someone who pops by to see the hype when new Smash stuff is coming out.

And the characters I see championed on here as the front runners honestly confuse me sometimes, simply because I only really ever hear about them on Smashboards

Past the obvious ones as old as pre-Brawl like K.Rool and Geno (andRidley), I'm talking Bandana, Ashley, Isaac, stuff that are anticipated, but when I take a step back I'm lost as to why.

I assume people work off information I'm simply not privy too. And then Sakurai puts Ryu in, everyone looses their minds and speculators rip their hair out.
