Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Looking at the arguments for Captain Toad, I think he's better off branching into his own unique franchise the way DK, Yoshi, and Wario all have, as should Luigi. It could potentially create a loophole concerning specific Mario series characters, meaning that characters like King Boo could be implemented and it wouldn't oversaturate the representation of the franchise. This could be expanded upon with other spinoffs such as both Paper & Dr. Mario.

Something I just wanted to briefly mention because I've been thinking about it.

First of all, yes I'm about to talk about Rex and Pyra. I haven't said it before, but I will say it now: I think Elma and a Rex & Pyra team would be great for Smash. Do I want Rex in over Elma? Yes. I'm also quite comfortable saying I think Rex & Pyra will make it as DLC if not on the base roster.

Just wanted to make sure I said that.

ANYWAY, I was thinking about Xenoblade 2 content aside from a playable character. Music, stages, etc...

I think a great stage for XC2 would be Argentum Trade Guild. It's a central location to the game and would provide for some potentially fun hazards.

Here's a pic of the inside and outside:
Screen Shot 2018-05-28 at 7.03.01 PM.png Screen Shot 2018-05-28 at 7.03.56 PM.png

Basically, in XC2, there are side quests, shops, and all sorts of fun stuff in this location of the game. The stage could be either set up inside or outside (or both quite frankly). A hazard could be unsecured sliding crates that could strike players as they are fighting. Or you could always have enemies jump up from the Cloud Sea to attack players.

Music...my favorite part of XC2 discussion. I absolutely LOVE the music from this game and if you haven't played it, I think you will too.

Here are a few tracks that are, to me, among the best. I think these would be great for Smash!

Let me know what you guys and girls think. I think there's a lot of potential for cool stuff coming from Xenoblade 2.

My personal favorite track is Monster Surprised You. It's just a great Boss Fight track, and I think it would be freaking hype for Smash!

What characters do you all support that you never really talk about? The reason behind why you never talk about them can be part of the discussion as well.
Interesting discussion;

Isaac - Golden Sun;
I don't talk too much of him, since I've never really played the games. I don't know his story, nor do I know too much of him. I just know of his AT in Brawl, his mod in Brawl, and Super Smash Flash 2. I think he looks interesting, and have cool powers that would fit in the series, as well as long time fans of both the character and series would get some justice, therefore I support him, but don't talk too much, as I don't feel like I got much to say about him that could lead to a discussion.

Rayman;
I often talk more about Bomberman and Crash Bandicoot as they are the two of three/four 3rd Parties I want. Rayman is the third, but I never talk about him. He just comes third. He had a trophy, and he was part of my childhood, but not much as Crash who is my most wanted third party character, and Bomberman is the one I'm clamoring for because of iconic status, where he would go so well with Pac-Man, Mega Man, Mario and Sonic. Same with Crash. While Rayman get's the backburner for me.

Banjo Kazooie & Krystal from Star Fox;
I'm a bit on and off about them, therefore I placed three/four in the last post regarding wanted 3rd Parties. I've never really played a BK game, but my bestfriend loves the duo, and their series, and therefore he has been talking my head full of him wanting Banjo & Kazooie, and Krystal from Star Fox. Therefore as morale support, I support both Krystal and Banjo Kazooie in spirit of him. I do think that BK could be an interesting duo type, but that Microsoft might limit that chance, even of what PS said. It's Microsoft after all, and I need to see proof before I believe. Krystal on the other hand is also one of the Star Fox characters I like. Still, to me, she comes after Wolf, as I like the character just as much, but his a villain. Krystal would be interesting, and I'd like to see how the Smash team would make her. If either of these would make it, I know my buddy would be really happy. It's the same with me and King K. Rool, he support him just for the fact that I'm dying to see him in the game. I guess you could call it all quite "Rare".

Kamek - Mario Bros/Yoshi Island;
I think Kamek is really cool, and would make the best newcomer for Yoshi. Kamek is important to Bowser, and could fit an interesting fighting style with the magic. I always get the feeling that Yoshi representatives never really get suggested often or considered for a playable role, which is why I never really talk about Kamek. I mention him here and there, but that's quite rare, but it could happen, and I'd love to see Kamek at some point in a playable possition. More Kamek in general.

Meowth - Pokémon;
I've always wanted Meowth as a playable, to rival Pikachu. As I grew up with the anime, and knowing Meowth was a Pokéball Pokémon, I hoped that he might be promoted, just as Little Mac was. He does not have too much support visible, but I know there are people out there that would love the cat n' mice game.

I'm sure there are more, but those are from the top of my head.

Honestly I’m more excited for possible music/stages from Xenoblade than I am for characters. I have the full, multi-disc soundtracks for each of the three games, and there is a ton of great stuff that could be put into Smash.

WAT?

By the way, where came the Duck Hunt Dog moveset? It doesn't make sense.
Duck Hunt's moveset is based on:

A) a dog and a duck (pretty easy to find normals and aerials for a character like that)
B) the NES Zapper (the way it's used in Duck Hunt as well as other NES games that used the zapper)

It makes sense.

You need to choose between Rex and Pyra.
Could be possible two Xenoblade 2 characters in Smash?
Uh, no. You don't. Because the two are literally connected to one another. Literally.

They'd be 1 unified character like Rosalina & Luma/Pokemon Trainer. The way you fight in Xenoblade 2 kinda needs the driver and blade together.

Fulgore. Mostly cause Killer Instinct is rarely talked about.

As weird as it sounds nowdays, Brian. I mean, I do mention him here and there, but considering I still can't think of a strong mechanic for him to use to make a more diverse(but good moveset), there's little to talk about. Finishing up a stage(though I got a bit more to do on it due to lacking some platforming notes) is about all I did recently.

Let's see... Tingle. I rarely speak on him, though I do mention him from time to time when talk about my main Zelda character preferences.

Most people are predicting a tag team concept for both Rex and Pyra, a la Rosalina & Luma or Ice Climbers. Rex will probably be the main fihter and Pyra will enhance his attacks or something like that. Admittedly I haven't played XC2 yet.

Or people are assuming XC2 came out too late and Elma is coming instead.

Do we need crystals for Daisy? She's been shown to create fences around her flower garden specials in multiple games now. They could potentially add in those without breaking from her flower theme.

So Gamexplain is starting a series where they pick 10 songs across 3 series with playable characters that they'd like to see in Smash. I have to say that I didn't really like most of their song picks for this video (covering Mario, Yoshi & DK). I did like Andre's pick, but that's about it. Not terrible tracks otherwise. Just not high on my priority list.

Any songs that you guys feel must be included in Smash Switch? I would definitely say songs from games like Odyssey & BOTW should be included. Would also like to see a lot of songs from Hyrule Warriors & FE Warriors. Really hope Road Taken (Roar) and Alight (Storm) from FE Fates make the cut as well!

Even if no ARMs character is playable, hearing the main theme in Smash would be awesome!

Assuming that they reuse assets, I hope that just about all tracks from the 3DS & Wii U versions return as well!

I'll watch the video later as I'm at an event, but i usually either love or hate gamexplain videos haha. I know you said Odyssey, but I need to put it down that I better hear Lost Kingdom's theme or else I'll riot. It's my favorite Kingdom/theme in the game.

I also want the Snowmad theme from Tropical Freeze, it's pretty epic.

Meowth. Definitely Meowth. He is always overshadowed by current flavor-of-the-month Pokémon. Granted I do like some of those flavor-of-the-month Pokémon like Blaziken (during pre-Brawl), Zoroark (during pre-SSB4), and Decidueye (during pre-Switch). But the point is, Pokémon for Smash discussion is always about current flavor-of-the-month Pokémon. If there's one Nintendo character I want for Smash but know it will never happen, it's Meowth. At least Toad has a chance as Captain Toad. I still can't believe Duck Hunt Dog actually got in Smash after 12 long years of supporting and dreaming.

When I think of Bandai Namco having the video game rights to Goku, Goku appearing in tons of video games since the NES, the Shonen Jump Famicon with Goku as marketing, and the sheer amount of hype that Goku would bring to what Sakurai wants to be the #1 character game... Goku's definitely not impossible. If the only hurdle he has to jump is of him not originating from games is mitigated by his video game presence and how easy it would be to license with Bandai Namco, I'd actually say he has a shot. A near-impossible shot, but a shot.
His reveal trailer happens right at the end of a trailer for an unrelated Dragon Ball game, no one suspects a thing, Goku is using the Dragon Balls and wishing to fight opponents he's never fought before. All of a sudden boom smash. Sakurai comments only the power of the dragon balls could Goku appear in Smash.

...You know, since Rex and Pyra share pain, wouldn't it be kind of hilarious if only one of the two made it into Smash, and the one not in Battle gets flung around like a rag doll every time the other gets knocked back? Kek.

We don't neeeeed them I just think it would be the coolest base for her move-set. I just am not a huge fan of the whole flower thing even though her name is Daisy. That being said, I'll take any version of her they put in Smash without complaint. (except baby Daisy....do not troll me like that Sakurai)

The problem with this example is that because Isabelle isn't a fighter, any moveset you come up with her would be less obvious. That obviousness of the moveset could hinder our perception of the relative potential Link and Isabelle have in their moveset. So you're comparing apples and oranges.
A better comparison would be Link and Marth. Link can do a lot of things in his games ; swordfighting, using other weapons and various objects, and some other silly things, like flying with a cucco. Marth, on the other hand, can only do a few different sword strikes. So Link has more moveset potential than Marth. And Link actually has even more moveset potential than ever as his BoTW self, precisely because he can do many different things.
I still stick with my example. Marth may not have specific animations to pull from, but he's easy to think of a moveset for based on what he does in his game. I'm not talking creativity. I'm talking how natural it is. Isabelle has no moves to naturally pull from her games, so a moveset has to be made up. This does not mean she shouldn't be in smash Bros. There are already characters in smash with little to no natural moveset potential like villager and captain falcon. And they deserve their spots in smash, as , arguably, does Isabelle. But Isabelle has no moveset potential. That's why people made up the terraforming. It's a good idea, and like I said, it's more interesting than most current smash characters, but it remains completely made up. As you said, Isabelle is not a fighter. That is exactly why she has no moveset potential. There are plenty of other reasons for plenty of other characters. Basically, if you have to make up the movesets, there's not movesets potential there. Otherwise you would have to argue that every character ever suggested has movesets potential, at which point movesets potential means nothing. If you look at the roster there are very few characters with made up movesets. I believe it does greatly affect characters chances. It's nothing against Isabelle. I actually see her as pretty likely. I just meant her as an example for a general premise.

The thing to consider when calling Goku impossible is that literally no other character in existence can bring as much hype as him. "Goku in Smash" is not just a meme.
I take Goku's inclusion as a serious possibility.

1) Characters that didn't debut/ originate in a video have already been included. One being Lucario, yes people hate this example, but it's true he debuted in the anime as opposed to the video games. The second character being R.O.B. he debuted as a piece of hardware, specifically for two games on the NES. He didn't appear in either of those games.

2) There is an incarnation/ version of Goku that debuted in a video game, he's known as Xeno Goku and has fought other version of himself (most notably against his anime version). So yes Bandai Namco made efforts to differentiate the two Xeno has a different design and back story.

3) Bandai Namco is making Smash 5, and Bandai Namco has the video game rights to Goku. Bandai Namco only had a single character in Smash 4, chances are they will likely get another in Smash 5 as they're developing that one too.

4) Goku has been on far more Nintendo consoles and games then some of these other wanted characters.

5) Goku has been featured in advertisements and commercials using Nintendo products.

6) Goku is the poster child for the Famicom Classic Gold Edition.

7) Smash 4 made a point to break rules and expectations attached to characters, most notably Cloud. If this trend is to carry over to Smash 5. It would appear breaking ground into potential "fourth party" territory would make sense. Goku has been in more video games then any other anime or manga character, and dare I say any fourth party character? He would be the one to represent the impact of anime and manga on gaming. Keep in mind Smash 4 only had Japanese companies, there may be some national pride associated with Smash, and anime & manga are very culturally relevant to Japan.

8) He was likely the winner of the ballot, he may have not been realizable back then but maybe more consideration etc has happened.

I'm not saying he is going to happen, but it's not impossible, by the very definition.

Since the Rate their Chances thread came up, I decided to take a look at the last one. You can find the original one here: https://smashboards.com/threads/rate-their-chances-game-over-join-the-rtc-social-group-today.351920/ Keep in mind it got updated and some of the leaks and rumors influenced who got picked. This is why Chorus Men were so high towards the end and Shulk was top
  • The characters that were very low on this were Rosalina, Lucina and Robin. The latter two make sense as everyone expected Chrom. Both of their want rates were decent (around the high 30s/low 40s which would be good by the current threads standards). Rosalina was similar as she had a low chance rate but a high want rate (42) (for reference, I'm going with 40 and up being "good" for wants)
  • Greninja wasn't rated. There was a debate at the time on which generation was going to get a Pokemon. I remember folks saying that Gen 6 was too soon. The concept of Gen 6 wasn't brought up
  • Bowser Jr (56), Palutena (72), Shulk (61), Little Mac (73) were all high.
  • Pac-Man's popularity grew over time though he originally wasn't that high
  • Miis were never popular as they had a want in the mid 20s. Highly expected with about 50 percent chance.
So, as far as looking at the current thread, based on how the last one went, its a mixed bag. There will be characters that show up that are high on the ratings and get in, at least a few. The wants seems to be a better guide as some characters will get in despite people not expecting them. Lucina and Rosalina are proof of that. If anything, its a good way to tell what characters people are interested in which is usually a good guide.

Who are reliable Smash or Namco leakers, anyway?
I'm breaking into Hal/Bandai Namco right now, guys.

Don't worry, I got all of us Mario fans.

See you at E3 when I force them to reveal work has begun on Waluigi, Daisy, Captain Toad, Geno, Birdo, King Boo, Fawful, E. Gadd, Mallow, Koopa Troopa, and Honey Queen.

I got us, fam.

You're taking it too literally. Lucario was obviously intended to be a gaming character in the same way as ROB was. Goku, on the other hand, has an origin with no relation to videogames whatseover. He is in no way a videogame cahracter, compared to Lucario and ROB who are basically on the fring of non-VG cahracters at worst.
2) There is an incarnation/ version of Goku that debuted in a video game, he's known as Xeno Goku and has fought other version of himself (most notably against his anime version). So yes Bandai Namco made efforts to differentiate the two Xeno has a different design and back story.
splitting hairs. It's Goku either way. And let's be honest, we would never get "Xeno goku." It would just be Goku.

3-6 are just kind of nothing and dont really matter.
7) Smash 4 made a point to break rules and expectations attached to characters, most notably Cloud. If this trend is to carry over to Smash 5. Keep in mind Smash 4 only had Japanese companies, there may be some national pride associated with Smash, and anime & manga are very culturally relevant to Japan.
Just because one fan-rule is broken doesnt mean we're suddenly going to get something Sakurai has explicitly said he wont do.

I dont want to call it a slippery slope because I think im using that wrong. . .but it feels like a slippery slope.

Goku will never be playable in smash

You're taking it too literally. Lucario was obviously intended to be a gaming character in the same way as ROB was. Goku, on the other hand, has an origin with no relation to videogames whatseover. He is in no way a videogame cahracter, compared to Lucario and ROB who are basically on the fring of non-VG cahracters at worst.

splitting hairs. It's Goku either way. And let's be honest, we would never get "Xeno goku." It would just be Goku.

3-6 are just kind of nothing and dont really matter.

Goku's been in more video games then Lucario and ROB combined.
They both didn't originate in a video game.

God that high Ridley chance just depresses me. I'm really hoping for some exciting news at E3 for us Ridley supporters.

Most people expected Mewtwo to represent Generation 6 as he was the poster boy of X and Y. Also,people who thought a Gen 6 newcomer character was likely predicted a character like Sylveon or the Kalos Trainer. Very few people thought we'd get a Gen 5 character over anyone who would represent Generation 6.
