Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Here's a question for this thread I've been thinking about.

Would you rather this game came out near the end of this year, as planned, but your 3 most wanted newcomers miss out, or would you prefer the game to get delayed a year for undisclosed reasons and all 3 of them get in?

Personally, I'd take a year's delay if it meant Rex, Mimikyu and Bandana Waddle Dee but I'm curious as to what other people value.
I view delays, typically, as a good thing. I'd much rather have a longer wait for a more polished game than receive the game sooner with issues or missed potential. It's only when delays last around a year or more where I get concerned, because that typically means something bad is going on behind the scenes.

I wouldn't really care if the game was delayed, honestly, regardless of getting my three most wanted newcomers or not. It's just be a boring as hell year with that long of a delay.

I think most people would be fine with delays if it meant their favorite character could get in. But if that character would get in later as DLC then I'd want the game out sooner then later.

I'd take a year extra so long as the public didn't find out what characters caused the delay. I don't need the extra salt. :p

DLC is a thing but I'd say delay. We'd probably get some news about the game anyway, and I'd rather not miss anyone just to get the game earlier.

If a year delay will result in Dixie Kong, Spring Man and Paper Mario? It can be my guest.

Hey, I thought that this game would originally release in 2019-2021 before it got confirmed, so waiting an extra year is not going to be a problem for me. I have plenty of other games I am interested in as well this year like RDR2 and Dragon Quest XI.

I've waited over a decade for Ridley, one more year is nothing if it means he's guaranteed.

I'm wondering, with Nintendo's paid online incoming, would it move to a more "service" based model like Splatoon 2 and ARMS or would DLC stay paid and compartmentalised. (i.e. you need to buy each character separately)

I could see (though I don't think it's likely) past stages and veterans that didn't make the inital cut being free (so long as you're signed up for Nintendo online) to keep things ticking along when entirley new characters are worked on.

I really want this to be the model they base the game off of. Not a lot of newcomers in base but support the game with dlc for years.

But the question is how do you support that with the online system? For example if I wait a year and then pay for the subscription do I get all the characters from before too? I don't see them removing characters from your game if you aren't paying for the subscription...I'm interested in how they'll make it work.

Edit: I had to double check but there are also monthly data plans...so like what if I pay for one month and get all the dlc that's been released for just $4... Like I said it seems very un-nintendo to have the characters dissapear when you miss a payment. Maybe they could do yearly season passes?

This. i didn't expect it this soon so waiting would just make me have to pretend we never had it announced so soon. Although the only character I personally want is Geno and im prepared for that to never happen haha, I got little mac last time that was more than I could ever ask for so im happy but waiting really doesn't seem too bad considering how quick this one is coming out. this time I just want a good roster overall with the final few remaining truly deserving characters getting in, so i dont have many must haves but i can be patient for a better game, i think thats always the right way to go.

Ridley isn't in my top 3 but I'd wait a year just for him tbh, and Elma and Dixie on top of that.

Would you still want to wait an extra year if the information continues to come in at its current rate? Like... you’d have to wait until E3 2019 to get any information beyond what’s in E3 2018.

Edit: For me... I think I would rather get it earlier, given that I can already play as a few of my favorite characters in stuff like SSF2 (unofficial, yes, but still counts.)

On a side, the thing I'm dreading the most with this Smash game is them putting a lot of heavy emphasis on Wii U titles, in particular the more controversial ones like Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, Animal Crossing amiibo Festival, Star Fox Zero, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Paper Mario: Color Splash, etc.

It sounds weird they would do that, but remember that they similarly used controversial titles like Metroid: Other M and Paper Mario Sticker Star as a basis for content, and I remember some people being bitter about that.

If they were smart they would also reference Switch games released in 2017 at least to counter balance that, or at least more heavily reference the Wii U games that have redeeming qualities like Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.
Just when I forgotten that game exists...

You know, Lucina is less different than Roy, but Lucina is more popular and important than Roy at this point. I think Roy might be the one to go instead of Lucina.
28 days until E3. We can do this!

It would be awful but since almost all of my top 3 are unlikely for one reason or another, I would. It's not like life doesn't move on...

I would honestly have to stop coming here everyday though lol.

Hmm, I admit that this is harder, but ultimately yeah, I want take the challenge if it means getting Rex, Celica, and Ashley. :p

I don't think missing an payment would undo a character's availability but it would prevent you from getting any more free characters until you renew.

I'd probably take it. My 3 most wanted are super unlikely (Marx, Kamek, and Maxwell), and I don't mind long waits for Smash. The daily info for the past game made the journey as good as the destination, and I hope that returns.

Even as a passionate supporter of Joker, I'd rather the game just came out sooner given the choice. My other most wanted have been written off completely by me, and I will have no disappointed feelings if they never make it in :p

I just want a new Smash game to go compete with, at this point. I'll just lead the charge for Joker DLC support and maybe he gets in eventually too.

That being said, if I wasn't given the choice and someone said "The game is being delayed a year whether you like it or not, but you can pick one character to have in the game" I wouldn't be upset either. Still get Joker and there's nothing I can do about the delay.

That's doubtful unless they plan to reveal literally all of the game's content at e3 lol
I really would rather them confirm or deconfirm Ridley at E3. Would rather that then going through months of mayyyybe.

If I even see a glimpse of Pyrosphere that would be enough lol.

I'd actually love if Sakurai was like ''Here it is. All of it. You little ****s. No way to leak now. No way to ruin my fun. See you for DLC Wave 1. The only DLC wave. In a year and a half from now. Peace out."

Ooo, are we still posting rosters? Mine is very much an "ideal roster" rather than an actual prediction. :p

I personally think it'd be really nice to have a smaller roster, where veterans can be heavily reworked and each character gets a stronger unique identity. It'd also help with balance, I reckon.

This would never happen obviously, but I'd personally love to see a Smash game like this, with more focus on quality than on quantity.

There's no way in hell even if the roster was being shortened that the first damn lady of Nintendo, Princess Peach would be removed.

No way.

There's also no chance that if they went to a roster as small as 36 that 12 of them would be newcomers. Only 24 returning veterans would be a disaster.

I have often entertained the idea of a smaller roster, however I think the ****storm that would ensue will prevent a smaller roster from ever happening.

Guys, you do realise that was his wish list roster, not a prediction roster? Because even if there was to be a dramatic number of cuts in a future title, there is no way Peach, Wario, Meta Knight and Diddy Kong are getting cut whilst someone like Mewtwo or Wolf ends up remaining, especially Wolf.

I was aware of that, which is why I put my follow up about how I often entertain the same idea. But he posted his roster in a discussion thread, its going to get discussed :p

Peach being cut must have been a mistake...just...how...?

And no Diddy either?

I will say that this is a very pretty roster, well done on that front

That's....kind of the point?

I think everyone knows the deal by now.

I...feel torn about the idea of a small roster.

On the one hand, small rosters actually benefit balance in fighting games and help each character feel really unique. That, I believe, is what allows fighting games like Skull Girls and Them's Fightin' Herds to have such diverse gameplay in their rosters; less characters means more time and effort is put in to each individual character to make sure they're balanced, unique and fun.

On the other hand, less characters means just that, less playable characters. And that would kind of suck.

At the end of the day though...yeah, I'd probably support a roster of somewhere inbetween 12 and 36 unique characters rather than have a roster of 70+ that are basically the exact same character over and over, just with a different skin.

I ain't complaining lmao.

Peach would be my next choice for a Mario rep for sure. My main gripe is that she doesn't inherently have a ton of interesting moveset potential imo, even though Smash shows that you can obviously make a set for her if you really want to. I've never come across a concept for her that makes me think, "oh, that'd be really cool!"

K. Rool's spot could go to Diddy instead, it could go either way. I thought it'd be neat to have Diddy and the other two partners from TF as part of DK's moveset, with the ability to switch between them somehow to change a few of his moves.

This would be pretty great actually, the surprise is always taken out of games these days with people getting stuff slightly early even like the day or so before it drops, smash especially tends to leak early and with DLC almost certainly happening its not like the whole "final" roster would be revealed. but if sakurai wants to surprise us just do it now at E3 with a huge bang showing everyone, since the game is coming out so soon its not like it would be old in a few months and there'd be no more hype by say September. Just seems like a good fix to have sakurai reveal characters how he wants instead of trying to hide it til we get ahold of the game and it all being spoiled before hand, these days theres just no avoiding it anyway.

Out of every franchise, which do you think has the best shot at getting two newcomers on the base roster?

I think Pokemon, Xeno, and Splatoon all have a decent chance, but if I had to choose only one, I'd say Pokemon. Any of you have a different opinion?
