So how about that there Goku? Good choice to represent the new 50th Anniversary Shonen Jump Famicom Mini.

Real talk though. Do people think rereleases/ports of old titles have any impact on Smash. Like with VC gone and the NES games as part of the online don't release until September obviously old titles on the Switch aren't much of a factor. But things like the NES and SNES minis, or even Wii U and 3DS VC is the dev timeline is what we think. Could they perhaps lead to something being in Smash? Not necessarily a character but maybe an assist trophy or somthing more minor like music tracks or trophies.

What if Pokémon Switch is a Gen 1 remake and we get a playable Pokémon trainer using Pokémon in his moveset?
I don't know if that would be easy to make but I'd really like it. Not as much as Mimikyu though.

To be honest the exact same. Pac-Man was my most wanted third party at the time just because he's the very foundation of video game mascots to begin with.

How most people reacted to Megaman's reveal I reacted that way to Pac-Man.

On that subject I'm sure it's been done before but I haven't seen in a while;

Rank the reveals that got you most pumped up in Sm4sh.

I can't really rank them individually (hard to quantify if Mega Man got me more excited than Mewtwo), so I'll sort them into groups. (though I'll just cover the newcomers and DLC characters)

Ultra-Hyped - these characters were either ones that I really wanted, or ones that I had enjoyed from previous Smash games



Liked - I thought they were good picks, though I hadn't played much of their games, or my excitement was brought down by the fact that they'd been leaked months in advance



Neutral - I have no strong feelings one way or the other (or they were characters that I expected, rather than ones that I was passionate about)



DISAPPOINTED! - wasn't really a huge fan of their inclusion, though my opinion may or may not have changed since then



All in all, my reaction to the additions for Smash 4 was more divided than I thought - about half and half between characters that excited me and ones that didn't.

Considering the rather infamous rep the work culture in Japan gets, I'd imagine 6 months would be considered something akin to an extended break rather than a breather, which sounds more like 1 month to me. Going by that logic, Bamco would've begun assisting with development five months in or so.

Makes sense. The May 2016 update for Smash 4 might suggest porting has already begun somewhere around April-May.

My line of thinking could be way off, but based solely off the anime and it's popularity in Japan, it seems like Decidueye isn't getting nearly enough promotion from Game Freak to warrant it being considered for Smash. If the bird was planned to be in Smash, I think we would've gotten an indication that Ash's Rowlet would evolve and develop some form of cheesy rivalry with another Pokemon (in other words, start getting character development and steal the spotlight away from Ash's other Pokemon). So far, Rowlet has been a comedic relief who's gotten shafted in the character development department in favor of fire kitty getting over its dead teacher and rock wolf turning emo and aggressive every time it's fur gets dirty.

This is how I see it personally.

Honestly, Pokemon "1" and "2" are interchangeable. Both have been heavily promoted in the games and the anime, and they seem to be noticeably popular in all regions.

I'm not understanding the "Mimikyu is being pushed by Game Freak argument". Generally when I think of a Pokemon being pushed by Game Freak, my mind is immediately drawn to the anime. Doing a skim of Jessie's Mimikyu on Bulbapedia, I'm only really gathering that Mimikyu has had a few episodes centered on itself, but hasn't really done much between those episodes.

If one Pokemon is being pushed by Game Freak in the anime, its Lycanroc. He's looking to be the ace of Ash's team this season, ala Charizard or Greninja.

SSS+ TIER
THE most wanted. THE most favourite gaming character of mine. Protagonist of THE most favourite game of mine. I've been rooting for her even before the first trailer of Sm4sh. Each trailer I hope she would be the one, and the very last one was finally her time. I was BAWLING for 20 minutes when she was announced.

S TIER
Him not being a character in Brawl was a sin I had never accepted and he was my most wanted character along with Bayonetta. When I saw him I was, like, OMG FINALLY.
I first heard of her on a new article without any picture or video and was like "WHY THE HELL" But then I saw the trailer and was mindblown. Plus her yoga fighting style is so darn fun
Great Mario character, great gameply and AMAZING trailer. Hype level through the roof!
I've been hoping for Miis since the dawn of Sm4sh speculation and was thrilled to have them despite the Mii Fighter not being quite what I really wanted (I wanted gimmicky stuff from the Wii series XD)
Even if she turned out pretty "meh", I was very glad to have her in.

A TIER

I've been very surprised at his Koopa Clown Car mechanic. Before his reveal I didn't see his as anything but a Bowser clone, and wanted Paper Mario as another Mario rep (still to today), but since he was so weird and original, I was very hyped to see him that way.
I liked the idea of Corrin before his reveal, Corrin was the lord of the game that got me into Fire Emblem after all. And he turned out damn fine.
A newcomer I expected and was kinda happyto see despite having nothing to do with Xenoblade.
I didn't really care about FE back then, but I remember being very interested in his magic books mechanic.

B TIER

A Pokémon. Not my favourite one, but still a Pokémon. I brought a big smile to me (he was my starter in XY)
While not my favourite character, I remember feeling a "little" for his inclusion. He deserved his spot.

C TIER

Elicited nothing within me. No joy, nor salt.
I dislikes the DHD idea pre Smash so I was rather salty when confirmed. It grew up on me, though (thanks to the duck. I love ducks while I strongly dislike dogs)
Uninteresting clone.

Z- TIER

Meh. Never cared about him.
Didn't care, but as a purist I was disappointed. SF means nothing to me.
Iconic as he is to gaming in general, I don't give a d***. He is nothing Nintendo and adding him opens up to the most ridiculous requests.
I just did not like the idea of Pac-Man in the pre-Sm4sh era, so it's reveal was a big "WHYYYY. At least its design is bearable unlike the one we though we'd get. He somehow grew up on me afterwards.

Lycanroc is definitely being pushed harder in the anime, so that's why I ranked it first in my list.

Still, Mimikyu is getting some development through its rivalry with Pikachu sprinkled here and there. Tie that in with its high popularity and frequent promotion and I think it has enough going for it to be considered a front-runner.

I think what Mimikyu lacks in the anime focus Lycanroc gets, Mimikyu makes up with its promotion in the games. It's the focus of a trial in both games as well as has its own Z move and was promoted heavily before the games release (the song). That and Mimikyu is consistently popular across the world. I know people who both play Pokemon and don't and both defintely recognizes and adore Mimikyu more (Speaking about people who play videogames as people who don't are not the target audience of Smash). Even then , although Mimikyu isn't a focus in the anime it is featured in every episode (so more going for it than Decideueye).

In the end I think Lycanroc and Mimikyu are both likely, and the more I think about it Rowlett is more likely than Decideueye (which I honestly don't want...)

The only problem that I see with Lycanroc is that it's only the Midnight form who's bipedal. The Midday and Dusk forms are no Duck Hunt, so they can't hold items in the same way as the Duck Hunt dog, and they can't generate vines like Ivysaur.

As for Mimikyu, while it is a popular character in the anime series, that may not be enough for playable representation, especially when you look at Meowth's position. Another option for Mimikyu would be to go the Smash Run enemy route, if not a mere trophy cameo.

Huge MM fan back in the day. Used to draw my own Robot Masters/Mavericks and levels. I have every numbered MM game and every MMX game up to 6. Plus EXE and Zero. He was my childhood.
Superb Hyped:
Huge FF/FF 7 fan. His inclusion was like Christmas Day for me. That feeling I got when the opening scene unfolded was like none other. I still watch it to get that same feeling. It was magical to me. Everything about it...fantastical.
Hyped:
Fan of all the series they represent...especially SF. I was super excited to see them included.
Midzone:
I enjoyed their gameplay value and was glad to see them included
Meh:
Couldn’t care less if they were included or not

Not a big fan of clones/near clones

Was on my top 10 list, excited to see them revealed, but felt underwhelmed when in action. Lucina’s model is great but is a clone. I hate Palutena’s model and customized dependent moveset.

You're right, although any non gen 1 Pokemon has that issue. I meant people who play videogames but not Pokemon. Also really anyone who follows nerd culture on the internet as Mimikyu blew up when it was revealed and was featured on almost any gaming site as "Look at this sad/dark/cute new Pokemon!" Lycanroc absolutely does not have that, not even rockruff.

Edit: Also! To tie onto an earlier post from a few days ago, Smash doesn't need to market to people who don't play videogames, but they do need to Target the videogame market as a whole. And I'd bet that out of all the gen 7 Pokemon that are considered most likely, Mimikyu is the most recognizable to that demographic. Doesn't mean it's the one getting in, but it's an advantage it has over the other choices.

Only single-handed items if we're talking about the Midday and Dusk forms. The Midnight form stands on two legs, so it is able to carry two-handed items, like the Daybreak.

Anyway, while the Dusk form is highly notable in the anime series, the main thing working against it would be item usage; that's an issue that the Midnight form does not have.

Goku is seen as impossible and a joke, but there's no character in anything at all that would hype the "casuals"/whatever people want to call them more than Goku. He's an icon. DBZ has sold like 5 billion in merchandise alone. There's a high chance Goku might've won the ballot. He's the only non-game character with such an insane number of requests. People really, really want him.

Do I want Goku? NO! Not at all, even though I grew up with DBZ and love it to death. Can it happen? Yes. Won't be the first time Sakurai makes an exception to a "rule." In any case, don't lose your minds when a FighterZ Switch reveal jumps to a Smash reveal, even if it's a 0.000000000000000000001% of it happening.

I just realized that Disney/Marvel allowed Thanos to be in Fortnite allowing people to dab/Dance to ridiculous thing with him.
But were being ass with Capcom for the Marvel vs Capcom Infinite Roster and EVEN trailer forcing pair of people and making sure No Marvel character get hurt.
So basically, talking with the Mouse is like playing russian Roulette and hope to have them in the good mood.
Hopefully, If sora is EVER considered, they were in a good mood.

Anecdote time. I own a Mimikyu shirt, and a lot of people recognize it, as much as my Jigglypuff shirt. A guy even reacted negatively to the Jiggs shirt, saying how much he hates that "stupid, brainless, piece of ****" character. I think he was a Melee player since it happened on campus where the Melee guys gathered. That was a bit unpleasant, but I digress.

Mimikyu might not be universally popular, but it might be the biggest Pokemon of this generation.

I don't really know how I'd actually rank my reactions but I'll summarize how I felt seeing them:

: I didn't really have much to say about her other than I was slightly surprised because of the argument that she was "too sexy" for Smash, and I was happy for those who voted for her.
: I was pretty hype when I saw him in the ESRB leaks and very relieved that he had a very unique moveset with the Junior Clown Car (and got even more excited when I found out I could be Iggy)
: I completely lost it, I was shocked af when I saw Cloud revealed and was yelling out of sheer confusion. I might not be the biggest fan of Final Fantasy, nor have I played FF7 yet (I know, shocking), but I knew that he was pretty much a pipe dream until that one evening in November, and it was pretty damn cool to see him in Smash.
: All I could say about them was "WHY?!" since I didn't want any more FE characters. I wanted a different popular choice from the ballot like Wolf or K. Rool (I'm just assuming though since we don't know the actual ballot results) but we instead got an ad for a franchise I didn't really care for.
: "Ugh, goddammit, Sakurai." That's probably what I said when I first saw him. He's definitely warmed up on me though since I learned that he definitely does have the potential to be Luigified, although I doubt it, sadly.
: I was a bit surprised, supporting a different retro character (Takamaru) over Duck Hunt, and not a fan during speculation. When I saw how they played, though, I became interested and warmed up to the character seeing how unique and funny they were.
: I'm pretty sure that I originally thought that he was Mewtwo when I first saw the three fingers, but realized it was him once I saw that it was charging Water Shuriken rather than Shadow Ball, much earlier than other people who watched the trailer. I was happily surprised and was instantly in love with the character, stating that I'd definitely try to main him (He's a secondary of mine).
: Hype af, trailer was awesome and hilarious. Was expecting to see him in the game, and my expectations of him were fulfilled (despite him being a pretty low character on the tier list).
: I legit teared up when I realized that he was coming to Smash 4 when I noticed that his trailer was focusing on Ness and playing the Love Theme. I'm a Mother fan boy, and he was my main in Brawl, and I was very happy to see him again, especially with the buffs he got compared to Brawl.
: Somewhat surprised to see them instead of Chrom, but a tiny bit expected since it's Sakurai. Pretty cool characters imo, and definitely deserved to be put into Smash.
: Trailer was hype af. Although he's one of my least favorite characters to play as, it was great to see Mega Man finally in Smash Bros., and got an intro that he definitely deserved.
: Mewtwo's return also meant probably more DLC (which did actually happen), but in both cases I was very excited. I was confused as to why he wasn't in the base game, but I was happy to see him again.
: Was 100% not a fan in speculation, but had a feeling that they were gonna be inevitable. The E3 trailer made me very hyped for them and I loved how Sakurai made them fit into Smash Bros. His statement that "they're almost not even Miis anymore" described them perfectly and the custom moves aspect worked super well.
: Had a feeling he was inevitable with Bamco working on Smash 4, and had very little of an idea as to what he could really do in Smash during speculation. His trailer was great, loved the music, and he fits perfectly in Smash Bros.
: Pretty much expected, and was a really great trailer. I was doubtful of the fake leaks of her but knew she was still likely to come to Smash anyways and was pretty happy to see her.
: I originally thought Kirby was coming to MK8 but I realized it was a Smash trailer when I saw DK's fur being highly detailed. I was very surprised with her reveal, but with her recently revealed playable role in 3D World, she was definitely welcome in the game, especially after seeing her puppet master style gameplay, which made her very unique.
: Like most of us, their reveals were ruined, but both trailers were very hype af, and both deserved to be in the game.
: Through Chuggaaconroy's Xenoblade playthrough, I learned more about Shulk, and I started to really like him, even though I somewhat blindly supported him during speculation up until then. His reveal was pretty cool, and I really like how he plays compared to other swordfighters, the Monado Arts are interesting and fun to use.
: Didn't really care too much for their reveal, but somewhat surprised with their reveal. Their moveset made them fit right in, and I found the glint in their eye after netting Mario hilarious.
: Was never a fan of her, and she's always been a huge joke and meme of a character to me. If she ends up getting cut, she definitely won't be missed.

It's not like we don't have a lot of cartoonish humans and non-humans already.

But really, it's just Nintendo giving more focus on games with more focus on dialogue and story and these kind of games feature more realistic character designs.

Also, I like having differing body shapes, they are fun in fighting games, but it's not easy to model and animate how they fight. Also unless they are from the same game, all first party newcomers carry distinct and unique art styles so I don't have a problem with that.

I'm just not a fan of her basically. I doubt she'll get cut, but I don't really care for her either way. She's kind of interesting, but I would've honestly rather got a representative from a different 1st Party game, like Rythym Heaven. Wii Fit isn't really a notable franchise in the history of Nintendo despite its sales and the existence of the Balance Board, and someone else from a different franchise could've definitely taken her place in Smash and would've probably got a better response from fans.

Wii Fit isn't really a notable franchise in the history of Nintendo despite its sales and the existence of the Balance Board, and someone else from a different franchise could've definitely taken her place in Smash and would've probably got a better response from fans.

Wii Fit is still technically one of the most successful and famous IPs in Nintendo's history. It practically changed what is video games' demographic are, along with Wii Sports. I don't think she was competing with any Rythym Heaven character.

Not every character could be received well with every fan but still she's like Villager: Iconic to Nintendo in a way to be important enough as their real characters. Also fans received her well enough I think, especially in Japan.

I still believe Villager should've been in Brawl. However, I'm glad that Animal Crossing got the rep it deserves. Love the moveset and being a part of the original trailer is extra special.

Seriously? A Street Fighter character in Smash? Mario vs Ryu? I thought this would only be a match-up I'd see in Mugen. Definitely thought this would stay a pipe-dream.

I was very excited to see these characters join the cast. Strangely enough, I don't really play any of them competitively. I guess I didn't care for their moveset or playstyle. Still, the initial hype was there for me.

Neat but that's about it:

No strong words for any of these characters. They were cool to see, but that's about it.

Page 991 as of last night! Slowly crawling out of the 100+ page catch up. Last night was a bit of a doozy too with the stuff I read. Actually made me want to post just to quote myself, showing something I said in the CCI that I think applies well here.

When Ness and Lucas are compared as if they're clones or fill the same role/niche when imo they don't. But when it's brought up, I simply give my reasoning for disliking it. I don't tell people to go to another thread to discuss it because that kind of discussion IS allowed here. Customs talk has fallen into the same 'forbidden pit' as rar uthrow Thunder Pika was and Marcina discussion. If you don't like custom talk, either wait for a discussion you do care about to pop up or attempt to bring up something you want to discuss because you truly want to. Custom talk doesn't 'derail' the thread unless it comes out of nowhere and has no place in the current discussion. That's why it's a yellow topic. Trying to nip custom discussion as soon as it starts just because you don't like it is completely unneeded.

Reason I bring this up is because I saw a post (or maybe even numerous) that basically said 'if you can't word your opinion in a certain way then you shouldn't do it at all' and I've never liked that mentality. And even way before the posts I read last night, there's been times here where cuts discussion or discussion of stuff like censorship gets brought up and rather than allow the discussion to flourish, it essentially gets blacklisted and people quickly try to change the subject. Until news comes (unless it already has, if so, please tell me. I'm stuck on April 25th atm.) we're stuck talking in circles anyways.

And to be fair, the rules do indeed say to keep the place drama-free and then just the general rules. But I swear, people get way too attached to these fictional characters. Someone insults Bayonetta, a fictional character and the poster has absolutely no influence on whether she returns or not and yet this place turns into a ****show. People should be able to speak here relatively close to however they please without any consideration of upsetting someone or hurting their feelings. That's entirely on the individual with said feelings to handle it. This is of course, ignoring baits where someone brings up something purely for the intent of riling people up.

And to close this off, I swear some posters here don't seem to get that disliking a character isn't a one way street. 'Just don't play as them' doesn't cut it. It's a fighting game, you don't just play as characters, you play against them too. And you can enjoy being a character and still dislike fighting them. I'm like that with Corrin. So if someone dislikes Bayo or WFT or Lucario or whoever, they're free to express that and it's not a simple answer of 'just don't play as them'. And that goes for the competitive players and the casuals. Plus there's no need to get worked up over it at all. No one here has any influence on the roster so as much as I personally dislike Bayonetta, Cloud, Roy and Corrin, you don't have to worry about them getting cut because of me. Myself and nobody else is out to upset you, we're simply partaking in the speculation and giving our own opinion and yes, sometimes opinions are negative. Some people want or expect cuts and they don't have to care about how upset others will be if they don't want to care. If you're buying this game and it's not as a gift then it's for your own enjoyment, not someone elses.

TL;DR unless it's explicitly against the rules I ask as a simple lurker and odd time poster that we not dissuade people from talking about certain things or in certain ways just because we don't like it. Grow some skin or just start scrolling past posters you don't like or even put them on ignore. I've got another topic I'd like to bring up but this wall of text is large enough so I'll save it for whenever I next post.

I think it's just that Smash 4 had comparatively more "proportionate" human-type designs in relation to cartoony ones when it comes to newcomers.

Only single-handed items if we're talking about the Midday and Dusk forms. The Midnight form stands on two legs, so it is able to carry two-handed items, like the Daybreak.

Anyway, while the Dusk form is highly notable in the anime series, the main thing working against it would be item usage; that's an issue that the Midnight form does not have.

I'm sure Sakurai can take some artistic liberties like he did with Capt. Falcon. Either Dusk Form Lycanroc can attack by raising up the ground, (mud, rocks, and sand) for its moveset like an earthbender, or put transformations back in the game and allow Lycanroc to switch between Midnight, and Dusk form.

Goku is seen as impossible and a joke, but there's no character in anything at all that would hype the "casuals"/whatever people want to call them more than Goku. He's an icon. DBZ has sold like 5 billion in merchandise alone. There's a high chance Goku might've won the ballot. He's the only non-game character with such an insane number of requests. People really, really want him.

Do I want Goku? NO! Not at all, even though I grew up with DBZ and love it to death. Can it happen? Yes. Won't be the first time Sakurai makes an exception to a "rule." In any case, don't lose your minds when a FighterZ Switch reveal jumps to a Smash reveal, even if it's a 0.000000000000000000001% of it happening.

Goku isn't happening for the simple reason that he would be an absolute licensing nightmare, something that Sakurai himself has noted not just when talking about requests for anime characters in a Mii Fighter interview but also when he considered James Bond for Melee. Sakurai also rejected the idea of Goku not just for Brawl (by saying manga characters cannot join Smash back then) but also in an Smash 4 interview (where he stated Mii Fighters exists for characters like him and Spongebob).

Hype through the roof:

Greninja was such a WTF moment since I never even considered him a possibility. He was already my favorite Pokemon, and I actually lost it when it was revealed Greninja was the shadowy figure instead of Mewtwo.

Dark Pit was actually one of my most wanted characters. Shocking, I know, but the suspense Palutena's trailer left me was unparalleled.

Duck Hunt is a really lovable character, but I never thought they had a real chance. Their absolutely glorious trailer proved me wrong, and I'm really glad for it.

I'll admit Mewtwo was a "is this real life?" moment for me, especially since he came with the announcement of DLC.

Really awesome, but only in retrospect:

I really wanted Bowser Jr. in Smash, but with a paintbrush. So when I found out he was in his mech, I had mixed feelings about it. Looking back it really was the best decision and makes me love him even more.

Shulk and the Fire Emblem crew were great reveals, but I couldn't fully appreciate them since I didn't get into their games yet. Now Fire Emblem and Xenoblade are some of my favorite Nintendo franchises.

Good:

These are characters I like, but I wasn't clamoring for them to be in Smash.

Meh:

I couldn't fully appreciate Palutena because I wanted Dark Pit more, so until the end of her trailer I was feeling pretty hopeless. The others are just good choices that I don't have much of a personal attachment too.

These characters are ones I just don't like. Bayonetta might've been in the meh tier had she not been the ballot winner, since I was hoping for more from that.
