Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

To be honest the exact same. Pac-Man was my most wanted third party at the time just because he's the very foundation of video game mascots to begin with.

How most people reacted to Megaman's reveal I reacted that way to Pac-Man.

On that subject I'm sure it's been done before but I haven't seen in a while;

Rank the reveals that got you most pumped up in Sm4sh.
:4palutena: While I have a love-hate relationship with KI: Uprising, Palutena's characterization was one of my absolute most favorite things from the game next to Viridi. Even though I don't play as her much due to me being pretty bad with her, her reveal will always bring back good memories of me literally jumping for joy when I saw her trailer.

:4greninja: I was really into Pokemon at the time (I've since cooled off on it and am a bit more "eh" on the franchise now), so seeing my favorite starter from X&Y was really cool.

:4villager::4villagerf: Animal Crossing is easily one of my top 5 Nintendo franchises, so seeing them finally make it in made me super happy. I love their moveset and play as them pretty often as well, so I'm hoping that they're just as fun on Switch.

:4mewtwo: I have a lot of good memories of playing as him in Melee as a kid. Granted, I didn't really know what the heck Pokemon was at the time, but I still really liked him, so seeing him make a return was a very nostalgic thing.

:4robinm::4robinf: I had finished Awakening recently and was also really hoping that this Smash game would finally give us a legit magic user. It also helps that the reveal was totally unexpected, which is something I love about Smash reveals; unexpected characters that no one thought of but in hindsight make perfect sense. They're probably my favorite Fire Emblem character on the roster next to Marth.

:4cloud:I haven't played FF7 yet, so I have no real attachment to this guy. Even so, his reveal was just so out there, so unreal: Cloud in Smash was pretty much just viewed as a cool wish, and nothing more. No one thought it would ever happen. When it actually did, I was right there with people going "Holy cow, Cloud in Smash! We can make Cloud fight Link! Is this even real life anymore!?", ha ha.

:4lucas:It was around the time I was getting into the Mother games, and I legit didn't think he had any hope of making it back due to how niche he and his series was. Needless to say, I was pretty pumped when it actually happened!

:4drmario:Probably hypocritical of me considering my thoughts about Dark Pit and Roy, but what can I say? I have lots of Melee nostalgia with this guy. Plus I love Mario, and will pretty much take any character from that series. I'd probably find ways to be hyped about a Goomba. :p

:rosalina:I adore Mario Galaxy, so she was certainly a welcome surprise. I don't really care for her moveset, though...

:4bowserjr:Another cool add with a very fun moveset.

:4littlemac: I like Punch Out!, so I was pretty excited about him.

:4mii::4miif:I love Miis, and their reveal trailer was hilarious. Hoping to see some Miitopia content in Smash Switch!

:4shulk:Never played Xenoblade, but I was happy and excited for others who were happy and excited.

:4pacman: Eh, would rather have a Tales of character. At least he's fun to play as, and I do have good memories of playing Pac-Man World 2.

:4megaman: Never played Mega Man, so my reaction was pretty much "Huh. Neat".

:4ryu: Pretty much the same as Mega Man.

:4duckhunt:Hmm...meh.

:4wiifit:My reaction could pretty much be summed up with a good 'ol fashioned "lol wut".

:4lucina:I love her character, but why'd she have to be a clone...?

:4feroy:If it weren't for Lucina being a clone, I probably would be a little more accepting of him. But...do we really need 3 Marths? At least change him up a little bit!

:4corrin::4corrinf: I was pretty stoked at first, but then I actually played Fates and discovered that Corrin was one of my least favorite FE Lords of all time. At least the game they come from is great! ...When it comes to gameplay. *Cough*

:4darkpit:Ugh, I'm sorry, but no. He's just not for me. He gives off too much of a "Nuthin' persenall, kid" vibe, and not in the funny way.

:4bayonetta: Don't care for her at all, and was super bummed when she was shown. The only DLC character that I didn't buy.

EDIT: Forgot to put in what I thought of Little Mac.

Would be a bit of a downer tbh, never cared for ICs, I'm not interested in Xenoblade and Rex is widely expected anyways, and although Isaac would be a cool addition he's not 'headline name at E3' material. Underwhelming would be the word to describe the scenario.
You don't have to like everything like a blind fanboy.

This is what I would think too tbh.

Meh.

Saw Live:
Hype:
Robin (Shattering Gematsu leak, although I still want the Hooded alt)
Rosalina (I screamed at this one, it was goooood)
Miis (Loved the idea)
E3 2013 (Obvious game reveal hype, not really hyped for the characters themselves)

Not as hype:
Little Mac (Cool trailer tho)
Palutena (Cool trailer, kinda expected)
Shulk (Kinda expected)

Went to site in the middle of the night to see their smug faces
Hype:
Greninja (I loved this sooo much)
Cloud (They did THAT? Wooooow)
Bowser Jr (I believed the ESRB leak and I LOVED it)

Not as hype:
Pac-Man (oh cool, they did it)

Watched Direct the next morning but got spoiled in the description
Hype:
Corrin (Lost In Thoughts All Alone remix is the stuff of dreams)

Not as hype:
Bayo (No connection to the character, but I didn't hate her)

Golden Sun. I'll clarify that in my previous post.
In that case, I'd be excited for all three of them. While Ice Climber isn't really a "series", and I never really played as the ICs, it was a shame to see that and Metal Gear removed. I feel like they could do a lot of great things with Rex even based on what little I've played of XC2, and Isaac would be fantastic - between earth magic and summons, there's so many options even without taking his sword into account.

Okay.

1.) :4pacman:
I had been betting on and hoping for this character for so long, and even though he was shown behind closed doors, I still remember lurking in the Pac-Man support thread on this very website, counting our loses and complaining about Palutena. Then, all of the sudden, Nintendo announced Pac-Man is a text-only tweet of all things, and everyone completely lost their ****.

I woke up the next morning to bask in the glorious trailer, and I swear I watched it 12 times that day.

2.):4villager:
While admittedly I didn’t get to see the announcement live, I was really happy when I discovered that not only was a Smash Bros coming out, but that it included a character from my favorite series, Animal Crossing (though admittedly I wanted Tom Nook but w/e)

3.):4littlemac:
I remember seeing the trailer in class and being in utter shock. I though for sure that Little Mac was a lost cause, and I was glad to be wrong.

4.) :4shulk:
I had never played Xenoblade (and when I did I ended up disliking it), but I got swept up in the Monado Boyz hype nonetheless. When he finally got revealed I was really excited.

5.) :4cloud::4ryu:
Again, never played FF7, but Cloud’s reveal was awesome because of how off-guard it caught me. Not leaked, completely out of nowhere, and incredibly hype.

Ryu should have been in the same category, but the stupid leak ruined the reveal.

6.) :4duckhunt:
When the ESBR leak first happened, this was the silver lining for me (“If it’s real, at least the Duck Hunt dog got in. That’s priceless.”)

7.) :4megaman:
Mega Man was something I had little knowledge of, played a little bit of, and was not super into. I didn’t really feel the hype for this guy the way I did for Villager.

8.) :4lucina::4robinm:
What about Monado Monday???
(In hindsight they got me to play a FE game which has quickly become my favorite video game series ever so shout-outs to them)

9.) :4wiifit:
I thought it was a funny and clever idea, but hyped I was not.

Now she’s one of my mains, go figure.

10.) :4bowserjr:
“Bowser Jr? Seriously?
..Oh wait, he fights in the Clown Car the whole time? That’s actually really cool, I’m on board.”
(ESBR leak was a hype killer)

10.5.) :4greninja:
I was one of the suckers who thought it was Mewtwo.

11.) :4palutena::4bayonetta::4darkpit::rosalina:
Did not care. Still don’t.

12.) :4mii::4miif:
I really don’t like Miis.

13.) :4corrin:
“THIS IS THE LAST OF THE SMASH DLC AND THIIIS IS WHAT THEY GIVE US??????”

Should be said that I warmed up to Junior, Robin/Lucina, Greninja, and of course WFT after a while. I will never like Miis or Corrin though.

What would your reaction be in the hypothetical scenario where there was 3 characters announced for E3 via a trailer but they were the Ice Climbers, Rex and Isaac (from Golden Sun)?
Isaac and Rex would get me hella hyped, and Ice Climbers would just be the ice-ing on the cake.

Jigglypuff::4jigglypuff:
The ESRB leak confirming Jigglypuff was easily the best part of the Sm4sh roster reveals for me.
Newcomer I wanted: :4duckhunt:
He was like at the bottom of my top 20 or so, but hey, I got something okay? Mr. Peepers is awesome and was easily my favorite newcomer addition.
A couple of the cut Veterans: :4lucas::4mewtwo::4drmario:
I was more hype for these guys than I was Duck Hunt (well, except Dr. Mario, he was a bit below Duck Hunt for me), they're also great.

Everyone else I didn't really care for. They might have surprised me like Cloud, but I never got attached to them or cared much either way, even if I thought they were good picks (Like Megaman or Little Mac for example). Except Bayonetta, Corrin and Dark Pit, Bayonetta was a personal disappointment for what I was expecting the Ballot winner to be like, and those other two were actually terrible, especially Corrin, I was extremely opposed to him getting in even before he was announced.

Characters who aren't in my top 10, or just characters I want in general, really won't stir up hype unless they really deserve to be there (Dixie & Bandandee) or have really awesome and unique movesets.

Ice Climbers would be great because I miss them. But if Rex and Issac don't have interesting Movesets I really wouldn't care. Say what you want about Golden Sun, but for me and the people I play with no one mentions the series, I only ever see it mentioned here and in smash speculation. So it wouldn't really matter for me :/

I'm guessing Spring Man will be Playable, because Nintendo keeps pushing Arms. Unfortunately, them pushing Arms has made me sick of it.

Except Duck Hunt, Bowser Jr., Cloud and Pac Man, I found the newcomers lacking.
The problem is I'm comparing them to the ones from Brawl where I had Wario, Diddy, Red, Snake, Sonic, Meta Knight and Wolf.

Of all the reveals, all hyped but but the ones that hyped me the most were Mega Man and Robin/Lucina.

One for realising the dream, the other for restoring fun back to the speculation scene.

Following behind are Mewtwo, Lucas, Little Mac, Cloud and Bayonetta.

The only meh ones were Corrin and Bowser Jr's Clown car. But I came round to them in time.

On mobile so I'm not making this too fancy.

Hype levels got S4 reveals:

Maximum Hype Levels: Mega Man. I'm a life-long fan of Mega Man, and Smash was always my dream outcome for him. I even made my poor girlfriend at the time watch the reveal multiple times.

Super Hype: Palutena, Robin

Considerable Hype: Almost everyone else

Mood killers: Bayonetta, Corrin. Bayo and I are chill now, but her initial reveal was highly disappointing to me at the time, especially knowing she was the last DLC we had to look forward to. As far as Corrin goes, it just felt wrong adding him as paid dlc to me. America didn't even have Fates yet iirc, and he just didn't seem like an interesting character. I'm a big fire emblem fan, I've played every one since they started being released in the West, so this isn't anti-FE bias. He just felt way too forced.

Also, I only screamed two times.
Once was Rosalina

The other?
Luigi.
This user knows what's up. :4luigi:

Arms in Smash is actually something I'm really hoping for. Yabuki's (I think that's how his name is spelled?) interview a couple months ago kinda makes me doubt it'll actually happen, though.

Min Min for Smash...!

I do not know in what order of hype to put it, so I'll put it in order of its presentation:
:4villager: The villager when he appeared "Oh, the guy of Animal Crossing in smash!" I was thrilled because it was the first newcomer that showed up.

:4megaman: I just did not believe it, I never thought that in the end they would include it and before they would include Ryu, I'm not a fan of Megaman but I got quite excited for the fans.

:4wiifit: When it was announced, I thought that they would also do trailers for the Assist Trophy, but no, is a fighter, I stayed a bit WTF because I do not know what she was doing here.

:rosalina: Meh, I honestly did not expect to see her as a fighter, I do not see the reason for including her and she did not surprise me.

:4littlemac: I was very excited when it was announced, because people wanted it in Smash, and I thought it was cool that it was in smash.

:4greninja: I was just disappointed, I was waiting for Zoroark in Smash, but it was not even Mewtwo, it was a pokémon that had no interest.

:4miibrawl::4miigun::4miisword: I was surprised because I really did not expect it and I thought the idea of the Mii in Smash was great! I love using my Miis or my OC's in games!

:4palutena:
I did not expect to see Palutena because she was a goddess, and maybe that's why I could not be, idk, but finally she appeared, sincerely wanted Viridi before than Palutena, and her moveset seems boring.

I thought they would announce Pac-man at E3, we had Mario, Sonic, Megaman... Pac-man is missing!

:4pacman: And Pac-man appeared! is the character that I loved the most that was confirmed, his moveset seems great and creative.

:4lucina: When I heard that the trailer was going to be from Fire Emblem, I said "Meh", I do not like Fire Emblem and Lucina's announcement did not interest me.

:4robinm: When the sparks left those green ones giving the floor, I thought for a moment that it was Sceptile, but no, it was a character who had no idea who he was, meh x2

:4shulk: Character that does not interest me, ok.

:4darkpit: When I saw the leak I was a bit confused, it did not bother me and if it is a clone, I imagined it.

:4drmario: When I saw the leak: What are you doing here? And Mewtwo?

:4bowserjr: It did not bother me that he was there, and seeing that he plays with that ship, I found it interesting and I started to like Bowser Jr for it.

:4duckhunt: When I saw it: Well, the leak is a bit horrible, but it's Duck Hunt Dog! I thought it was great that I was there and one of my favorite newcomers.

:4mewtwo: When it came out I was excited, I really do not have any interest in Mewtwo, but I know someone who did and I remembered him when I saw him.

:4lucas: "Good!"

:4feroy: Meh x3

:4ryu: It was fine if they had not announced Megaman.

:4cloud: BUT WHAT DO YOU DO HERE!?

:4corrin: Meh x99

:4bayonetta: The character that least wanted to Ballot, I'm not interested at all...

Mega evolution is meant to be temporary though and so it's perfect for a final smash. There's absolutely no changing of lycanroc forms in game and it's really out of character. It's probably going to be dusk form with colors refrencing day and night forms.
Like I said already, the Midday and Dusk forms have one heck of a handicap in that they're not able to carry two-handed items. As such, it's only really the Midnight form Lycanroc who has the most playable potential.

And yet the midnight form is probably the least iconic. Maybe it's equal terms with the day form, but if we're saying Lycanroc's popularity and likelihood stems from the Anime than it's going to be the Dusk form.

Trust me I hate people assuming Decideueye is the only Pokemon with a chance (even though I love him and want him). I just think Lycanroc's bipedal form is it's disadvantage, just like Mimikyu's is it's unusual body shape.

And, like other people said already, that's still silly.
First of all, it can work very well:

To say nothing of just being able to use floating rocks like in stone edge or something to hold crates
And the fact that Pikachu and Pichu still manage despite being semi-bipedal
Secondly, if there's something that really is just impossible, why not just give him the handicap of not being able to carry some items? I certainly wouldn't mind, and I definitely would play Midday form if it was in the game.

Can I ask why you think transformations will return? Never understood that with your roster.

Overall I starngely agree a lot with how you speculate and think, and then I see your roster and I couldn't disagree more XD

If Dusk form Lycanroc does get in, it probably won't be as a playable character. Pretty much every Smash Bros. fighter has a way to carry barrels, crates, and even the Daybreak. But in the case of Lycanroc, only the Midnight form is able to carry such items, thanks to its bipedal stature.

Items and quadrupedal is not really an issue, items just vanish when the character needs to use that specific body part for an attack. They could hold the items in their mouth and they'd vanish when they need to bite or do something with their mouth. Happens to Link when he uses his bow and during half of Ike's Aether animation. For crates/etc. they could toss it on their backs. Won't look as awkward as Jiggs holding a giant crate.

Tell me your thoughts. :)
Nice, but why transformations?

Do you honestly believe that two Animal Crossing reps and the Card guy will actually make it in? I'm not trying to be mean, I'm generally curious if you have some reasoning or just wants.

You put Celica in with the clones, what's your reasoning there? Despite her being a Marth clone in Warriors, she literally shares nothing in common moveset wise with any of the FE cast, and I feel Sakurai knows that better than Koei Tecmo ever would. Maybe Robin? Still not the most ideal choice to clone her off of as Celica doesn't use Tomes.

In regards to the image in the spoiler box, swords are typically treated as single-handed weapons, so a Midday/Dusk form Lycanroc can carry a Beam Sword with its mouth.

But what about the Daybreak? It's a powerful two-handed weapon, and it would not look right to see a Midday/Dusk form Lycanroc try to hold onto it.

Every fighter (excluding Final Smashes) has to be able to use every kind of item that exists, including the two-handed items. And right now, only the Midnight form has that kind of capability.

You just have to use a bit of imagination for the posing... To fire the Super Scope or Daybreak, it just needs to put them upside-down on its back, with its head lowered so that the barrel can be aimed over it, and then pull the trigger with its tail (I know its tail isn't prehensile, but we can ignore that for a brief moment, items aren't supposed to be super in character anyway.)

Not too bad. I really like the inclusion of Spring Man and Lycanroc. Feels like both of those characters really deserve to be in Smash. A little upset with Dixie being a clone, but I think that's something I could get over.

However, it seems like your roster has the same problem as Smash 4. Aside from Pokemon, AC, and Xeno, most of the existing franchises didn't get any newcomers. No Mario, no Zelda, no Metroid, no Kirby - it feels a little underwhelming. I'm not saying Sakurai is obligated to add characters to every franchise, but it seems like a missed opportunity to not include at least a few characters from those series.

In regards to the image in the spoiler box, swords are typically treated as single-handed weapons, so a Midday/Dusk form Lycanroc can carry a Beam Sword with its mouth.

As others have already said, it all depends on the creativity on Sakurai's part. Maybe Lycanroc could use rocks to levitate items in a vein similar to Mewtwo, or maybe it could just awkwardly carry crates and the Daybreak in its mouth. I don't know. Either way, it's not impossible, and I doubt Lycanroc's status as a quad Pokémon is going to be enough to deter Sakurai from at least trying to work around it. If anything, he'd probably like the challenge.

You say that they "have to be able to," but it's only correct to say that they "have been able to." ICs can carry two items, or hold one and then still be able to perform a grab. There's no reason why there can't be a character who has a limitation.

Between having a unique character and Daybreak, I'd be happy to have Daybreak removed if it's really so offensive.
Beyond that, all the large items are containers. Why not just give Lycanroc the power to instantly break them with A instead (except the party ball, which would just be triggered)? He lacks the power to throw them, but he also has easier access to the contents than any other character.

Hey, Sakurai actually had an article about UI design in 2016. I ran into it because it was Sakurai speaking about Persona 5, but the main point of the article is about UI and how Persona 5 did it right. Hopefully this means he learned something about UI and menus, and it definitely gives hope for a heavily improved menu experience in Smash Switch.

Can I ask why you think transformations will return? Never understood that with your roster.

Overall I starngely agree a lot with how you speculate and think, and then I see your roster and I couldn't disagree more XD
Nice, but why transformations?
I have my full thoughts on transformations here:

You put Celica in with the clones, what's your reasoning there? Despite her being a Marth clone in Warriors, she literally shares nothing in common moveset wise with any of the FE cast, and I feel Sakurai knows that better than Koei Tecmo ever would. Maybe Robin? Still not the most ideal choice to clone her off of as Celica doesn't use Tomes.
For Celica as last-minute clone material, I think it is as simple as:

-Switching Elwind, Elfire, and Elthunder to a more powerful, but time consuming Seraphim, Fire, and Thunder.
-Switching the durability mechanic to a recoil mechanic, at least for specials.
-Switching most standard/air attacks to match her swordplay style in Echoes, making her more 'Wolfified.'
-Switching the Levin Sword to the Beloved Zofia.
-Making her overall running speed slightly faster than Robin, but lighter in knockback to compensate for her quicker/riskier/powerful playstyle.
-Making her Final Smash be similar to Robin's Pair Up, but with Alm fighting alongside Celica, comboing the opponent, ending the FS with an explosion.

I played enough of Echoes to get a good idea of how she could be a semi-clone of Robin. It is not ideal for Celica, but I personally think this is the best case scenario for her to get in Smash Switch. I think an FE newcomer's best chances are that of last-minute kind due to the overrepresentation of FE. Although, there could be a situation where Sakurai notes theme similarities of her and Robin with Sword and Magic, putting Celica in a position where Sakurai can add her as a last-minute semi-clone, for the main reason being her fan-popularity (for reference, here is the FE:Heroes character poll), being included for the same reason as Lucina. That is what I am currently banking on for Celica at the moment, though I have been having more doubts about her recently.

It has been a while since I shared a roster, but I have a new prediction roster to share:

Tell me your thoughts. :)
You really think we are going to see 4 brand new 3rd party characters (one of which they would have to go through Disney to obtain) on top of all previous ones from the last game returning on the base roster? That's a bit ludicrous.

Also I feel like you should add a new unique Mario/Mario spin off character; there are still many iconic, popular and unique characters from Mario and Co. to choose from, and they tend to appeal to both casual and hardcore fans. Having the only Mario related character being a last minute clone in Dixie seems very unlikely.

last-minute clone material
Unless you're suggesting that the appropriate sword animations can be pulled from existing characters, that is no longer viable as a "last minute clone," since that's most of the moveset being changed.

Also having only 3 veteran series get new characters chosen from the being of the project plan also seems unlikely, there has to be more than that.
