Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I'll be a contrarian and say that I believe Cross is more likely than Elma.
I didn't play Xenoblade X, from what I read the story focus on her.
However from the wiki of this game, it seems that Cross can choose from any class that decide the weapon wielded by the character. It gives more moveset potential.
He is also an avatar character, and we got two of them past game (Robin and Villager). While he doesn't have much personality compared to Elma, he is still an important member of your party, since you cannot remove him.
My two cents, since I don't really care about any of them. I am just surprised that Cross is not that much considered.

3 with Corrin. And yea that would be the greatest twist if instead of Elma or Rex we get Cross. People don't consider it as much because Cross is literally not even a character, 0 personality. Robin & Corrin atleast have stake in their story, and the villager...well yea lol.

I didn't play far enough into X to get a skell. Alot of people say the mech toy Sakurai got looks like Elma's but could it also look like Cross's? Or Elma could assist Cross like Chrom with Robin (wow what a strange FU call back that would be lol).

Not every character needs to have every weapon in the game in their back pocket to have a good moveset, and in fact most of them shouldn't. One Game and Watch is enough and we already have more than that.

OK but Cross doesn't have to use every single weapon from the game, he just has more to choose from, and it could give more ideas for a potential moveset. Robin could be any class, and they chose Tactician.
They might simply choose the most original class from X and give it to him.

I can address this as a Robin supporter pre-reveal, and as someone who has played both Awakening and Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Unlike Robin or Villager, Cross is an extremely blank-slate sort of character. Robin has a predefined personality and class, while Cross does not. He is randomized in his appearance and clothing, and his class is chosen by the player when the game begins, iirc. While Robin had the option of class-switching also, he had a default and (basically) exclusive class. The Villager doesn't have as much personality, but does have a default set of tools. Both of the avatars in question also have stories that focus on them, while Cross is essentially the player's eyes into Elma's story.

So, while Cross does have more options to choose from, he's hurt by not having a default range of abilities or a default look, even for promotional material. Further, unlike the Robin/Chrom situation, Elma does not suffer from being exceptionally similar to any character in the cast, instead offering a new style of combat (dual-swords and dual-pistols), which was the determining factor for Chrom being passed over.

Well you obliterated my view on Cross, thank you good Sir.
(Back to putting Elma instead of Cross lol)

On the 2nd Xenoblade rep, I personally do not mind whether Elma or Rex/Pyra takes the spot.

Anyways, I really hope that if they show a trailer at E3 (which is highly likely) , I really hope that it will surprise me just like how the first trailers for Brawl and the 3DS/Wii-U did.

But Robin got Tactician because that's his default class in the game. Cross' class is Drifter, which means he will almost certainly just stick to the boring old Assault Rifle and Knife. If a Full Metal Jaguar's skill set isn't what Sakurai is looking for, then an X character who specialises in the class he wants should be picked rather than shoehorning those weapons into a block of wood that got called a character.

The only way they could top Brawl (I found the on for WiiU/3DS pretty weak honestly) is adding someone like Kratos for Sony or Master Chief for Microsoft.
Or revealing twelve new characters in one video.

I learned that Masahiro Sakurai played for many hours a video game called Stardew Valley. Does this mean he has plans to add a stage based from there?

The character reveals in Smash 4 weren't shocking enough?

I mean, I get that Sonic was hype, but Smash 4 had so many reveals that I find it shocking that it didn't beat out Brawl in the newcomer department for you.

Sakurai played for many hours Playstation All Stars Battle Royale and... Well it convinced him to absolutely not do anything like that game, so Stardew Valley could also be a source of inspiration.

I was talking about the first trailer for both games, Brawl had Meta Knight, Wario, Zero Suit Samus, Pit and Snake (THE surprise for me).
Wii U had Villager and, next to this trailer, Mega Man and Wii Fit Trainer. I didn't like any of them much.

Sakurai is an avid video game player in his spare time, but that doesn't manifest in Smash Bros. all the time. For example, he's talked about how much he enjoys Final Fantasy 15 and Undertale, and has mentioned that Sony's online platform is the one he prefers most in the industry.

I think it means Sakurai just likes Stardew Valley.

Now I know characters are the thing people (myself included) get the most excited and passionate about discussing, but what I've recently found myself thinking about is what kind of music we'll hear in this game. What tracks are people here hoping for the most?

For me personally, these ones right here would probably be my top 5:

Honestly, picking even a top 5 is really hard for me when it comes to the music I wanna hear in this game. Nintendo's had such good music lately, it's really hard to choose lol.

That's a matter of preference. Wii U/3DS shows more stages, more gameplay and more veterans. Also newcomers, while lesser, has more recognizability among casual Nintendo fans.

Personally, I like Brawl one better but I think last one was more hype.

Yes, that's right! Masahiro Sakurai because he likes some other video games does not mean he will add characters or stages from there.

Unless I'm misunderstanding, there was Mario's FLUDD and Greninja.
those are just windboxes. there is no "wetness" effect in smash 4.
sakurai has gotten much better over time (outside of zelda) of making characters play like and feel like their original incarnations down to side effect, sounds, even combos (bayo and ryu) from the source game. inklings
should have the ability to spray opponents in ink over the battle. in 4 they would not.

it doesnt compare to bayo or cloud because bayo witchtime was easy to implement the clock item had been in smash since brawl and smash 4 equipment made limit easy to implement. this is a key part of what "realizable" means to me. characters that required a system change weren't realistic to begin with.

The collection of music that each game brings in is honestly one of my favorite parts of Smash Bros. Here’s a few songs that I would be excited to hear.

One of my favorite pieces from Odyssey, this song is just really fun and would be cool to hear while fighting on a Mario stage.

This is the best piece of music in recent Pokemon history, imo. Beautiful, triumphant stuff.

A remix of this whould be siiiiiiick

If this isn’t on an FE stage somewhere Sakurai has goofed

Wario isn't really less recognisable among general Nintendo fans than Wii Fit Trainer and the Villager, though.

Music is one of my favourite parts about video games, if I had to narrow it down to 5 new tracks I want to see most:

  1. Bringer of Chaos ~Ultimate~ (Vs Zeke, Xenoblade Chronicles 2)
  2. Steam Gardens (Wooded Kingdom, Super Mario Odyssey)
  3. Vs. Necrozma, Version 2 (Vs Ultra Necrozma, Pokemon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon)
  4. Exploration (Battle Theme 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 2)
  5. Mid-Boss Mayhem (Mid-Boss Battle Theme, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle)

Oooh, I didn't even think of Steam Gardens! That would make an amazing stage to go along with a remix! Pokemon Sun & Moon music would also be pretty hype, as that's the only Pokemon soundtrack next to Black 2 that I like, ha ha. Also, isn't there already a remix of Rise to the Challenge in Smash? I feel like I've heard that melody before...

Oh, and stuff from FE: Echoes would be dope. I really need to go play more of that one...

  5. Mid-Boss Mayhem (Mid-Boss Battle Theme, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle)
1. Haven't heard that one. I'll have to go give it a listen later today.
2. As stated above, I would LOVE Steam Gardens. Make it happen, Sakurai!
3. I haven't heard this one yet either, mainly because I wasn't interested in playing Ultra Sun & Moon after playing the base game.
4. ...I really should listen to Xenoblade's soundtrack, lol. I usually like JRPG music, so I would probably like it.
5. Mario + Rabbids honestly deserves to get some love in this game with how surprisingly fun and polished it was, so I would be totally down with having music from it. Wasn't Grant Kirkhope the one who composed for it? It had that Banjo & Kazooie/Viva Pinata vibe about it, which I absolutely loved.

If we don't get Elma I at the very least want a XCX stage with a truckload of music cause that soundtrack is just way too good to not be used

What is the most likely month for Smash to be released? I think that September, October, and November are the only reasonable ones. August is too early and December seems too close to the holidays.

September fits since Sakurai can get big reveals overwith in the summer and just release the game without the long news cycle of Smash For he disliked. The online service for the Switch is supposed to be released in September as well and what is a better way to sell an online service than alongside a new Smash?

October is right in the middle, and the month Nintendo launched Odyssey last year. They weren't messing around with Mario, so we know this a prime release date with ample time for development and hype.

November is also a possibility due to Smash For Wii U being released in November. The month is close to the holidays to draw in shoppers but not too close to get overshadowed by everything else that comes with the holidays.

Even if we do have to wait until November or even December, we will have tons of reveals post-E3 to keep us busy. This is the shortest period ever between the announcement of a Smash game and it's potential release, so there will be a high density of info in a short amount of time.

Well there's a much smaller timeframe for newcomer reveals compared to last game. I could see like 5 if they're going for at least 9+ or something.

How many newcomers are people expecting to be revealed at E3? Three like last time or more?
2 in the Video Presentation. One newcomer revealed at the start while another gets revealed at the end. (not including the Inklings).

Maybe a newcomer revealed in during the Treehouse gameplay footage. Or a veteran. Or maybe both?

And then a Pac-Man-esque reveal during the Smash Invitational.

Well if we are assuming the average number of newcomers around 10, then I'm defintely thinking more than 3, probably 5 + Inklings. This time during Smash 4's development (last E3 before release) we had 6 newcomers revealed, where as right now we only have 1. They have to reveal more because I don't expect the majority to be secret fighters.

Now if this is a smaller cast of newcomers, I'd say 3 + Inklings makes sense. Really hoping for that big 5 newcomer reveal like Brawl had though.

As far as music goes, I just really hope they don't do what they did in Smash 4 and cut down longer songs to fit the default two minute time matches. Considering how many people alter the time limits anyway, it's just a waste.

Mainly because I don't want a chopped up version of Twilight of the Gods like what happened with Id Purpose. :/

Well we are getting an invitational (As well as a demo right?), considering the game will be coming out this year too. I'd think we'd probably get more newcomers revealed than Brawl's initial trailer. They might even pull a Melee and reveal the entire starting roster but I'm not as sure on that..

You I'm glad Inklings were the 1st character revealed. Because if it was someone else, everyone would have expected them as they're the safest choice for a newcomer.

Honestly it could be anyone for the next newcomer revealed. :)
