After a brief hiatus, I've started following the Melee competitive scene again (missed you guys) and I'm considering attending some tourneys in the near future. While watching some of newer tournament footage (ROM 3 and #5 had ridiculous gf sets, btw, ****) I noticed a couple new and/or unfamiliar terms.

I'm already gonna suck when I start playing in tournaments, I don't wanna be outta the loop, as well. So, I was wondering... anyone down for a slang list? Like, you guys leave posts explaining popular phrases/terms (what they mean, how they came about, who originated them) and I add them to the OP, or whatever. It could "informative", interesting and funny, I think. Plus, I dunno, it could be kinda cool.

Several parts of the terminology we use is covered in the FAQ at the top of this forum.
Some of the other stuff may be region specific, but most of what we say isn't slang for something else, it's a technical definition.

Therefore most of the smash lingo you encounter is actually jargon, not slang.

However, the one main instance I can think of to the contrary is the concept of 'Johns'.
Johns are excuses people make for why they lost or why they aren't able to do something. These are usually called out in the form of "*sentence enhancer* *NOUN* Johns!" to berate or diffuse disgruntled players.

Examples
What you say - Their excuse
Controller Johns - "The C stick isn't working!"
Stage Johns - "I hate that stage, we should've gone to FD."
Counter Pick/Character Johns - "You're a ****ing tier-*****."
Illness Johns - "I'm sick today, that's why I suck, I'm normally a lot better than this!"

...continuing in that fashion, ad absurdum.

WC DI - It's basically inputting the wrong DI.. like let's say DIing away a tipper Fsmash of Marth and you died at 60%. lol. This came from 3 years ago when I won a WC tournament then came back and made sure to say WC DI everytime someone bad DIs. And it caught on.

I never considered the regional stuff. But I meant more like... stuff like, "stack it up", "that aint [blank]"... didn't mean like terms of techniques and stuff.

Stack it up is what NC Smashers yell when they're mad hype. The meaning isn't something that can be taught. You must find the meaning within yourself.

That ain't Falco - Can be sarcastic or not. If sarcastic, the character is Falco. Generally sarcastic "That ain't Falco" refers to Falco not behaving how Falco normally behaves. Otherwise, its meaning is literal: the subject character is not Falco. Often used when someone who normally plays Falco (in singles or otherwise) has selected a different character.

Ooooh - Excitement.

Oooooooh - Greater excitement, usually used to acknowledge initial excitement of the first "Ooooh".

Where you at? - Rhetorical question. Used as an expression of incredulity or astonishment at the severity of someone else's misfortune or predicament (such as being *****).

Get your *** whooped - Closing statement to ****; usually done when the **** is successful and someone is sufficiently beaten down (can be used at the end of the match, or the middle).

My **** hurts - Consequence of prolonged masturbation without some kind of lubricant (water based, spit, silicon based, or otherwise). Can also refer to satisfaction / excited bewilderment at the thoroughness of the **** another player(s) received / performed.

I think the more interesting thing is that different regions have different lingos and its really cool. Different regions even have different names for the same moves characters use. I can think of region specific phrases from Tristate, Cali, Arizona, Florida, east coast Canada, and NC. To create and exhaustive list would be difficult to say the least. I recommend that you just watch more vids, most of the slang is pretty intuitive given context.

Well, whatever. Forget the list. People can just post stuff. Stuff's good.

Usually any reference to Brawl means the game is getting really stupid and campy.

Anything that refers to an automobile and / or purple is probably Ganon's down B.

WC calls it purple bus (or maybe just lovage). DJ calls it the batmobile. And so forth and so on. The only really tricky one is Canada's term for it. We call it the "Kage faceroll" or "mash buttons".

Twist (DI) is really bad DI. Sometimes they clarify with "Twist DI" but often they just say "Twist".

Any really far country or foreign area (particularly a small, obscure one) + DI usually refers to awful DI.

Cambodia references are done with Young Link in mind.

Salty - Being mad/frustrated because you lost.

Salty Seconds - Counterpicking the same stage you lost on, right after you lost on it. Signifies that you disagree that your opponent is better than you are on that stage.

Sandbag - Purposely doing worse than what you could be doing in a match, for whatever reason.

JV n-stock (where n is any natural number larger than 1 but smaller than 6 in a 4 stock match):
If you have 0% at the end of the game, you can add 1 to the number of stocks you retain and call it a JV n stock (eg JV 5 stock is a 4 stock with 0%, in other words a perfect win).

Usually when the crowd shouts "x STOCK, x STOCK!" (where x is the number of stocks the combattant in the lead has left), it will start shouting "JV! JV!" if said combattant loses a stock.

Why not Hungrybox. I mean they never chanted USA for Hbox before but he's a top American player regardless. They might chant USA for him at Genesis2 or Apex 2012.
Not going to happen. The US hates Hbox (I don't hate him myself btw).

Don't forget about tomahawk. That's when some one jumps acts like they are gonna attack you, but then just lands and grabs you. Summary: Empty hop to grab.

There were not enough Europeans at Pound V for the Armada chants to be this loud in this match-up.

Where does "stack it up" come from?
A bunch of us just started doing it at Herb 1, and then it became a thing at Herb 2. By Herb 3, other people knew about it. NC has a bunch of weird things we do.

Stack it up = Dr. Peepee's starman music.

Singing random songs in the middle of matches = The hype level is over 9000.

Catfish Combo = The most amazing thing you'll ever see.

**** Danny Mexico = I don't particularly care for that Chu Dat fellow.

These are just a few of our things. Others may pop up occasionally.

The salty runback is where you go right back to the same matchup and stage you just lost on instead of possibly using a better one cause your mad you just lost.
