Jesse and James as playable fighters would open the same Pandora's Box that Goku and Iron Man would.

I don't think we'll be able to handle the sheer mayhem that it would cause for speculation.

None whatsoever.

A video game character having references to non-gaming media is fair game. We've seen it with literally every Pokemon speaking their names, the Advent Children outfit for Cloud and even the Nina Williams Spirit among other examples.

But a character who outright debuts from a non-gaming media, even if they are from a franchise that started off as a gaming franchise, has always been Sakurai's big no-no. It's always been The Rule.

You can argue Lucario is an exception because of his movie and to that I wonder if you seriously believed there would be any period of time when Game Freak would've kept Lucario as a movie exclusive. He was always intended for video games first, the movie was simply finished before the Gen 4 games.

You can also argue R.O.B. but to me, even if it was the peripheral rather than any character on the screen, it still counts as gaming debut due to how it worked.
To be fair, the Pokemon anime is big. Enough they backported Jesse and James into Pokemon Yellow, and let Ash show up in Masters for a bit (Though like Arcanir Arcanir mentioned, that seems to have some stipulations regarding it). I'd wager that if any series could get non-game characters to pop up, it'd be Pokemon.

...Assuming Sakurai and co. are willing to deal with the unconfirmed-but-very-probably licensing issues, of course

Jesse and James as playable fighters would open the same Pandora's Box that Goku and Iron Man would.

I mean... How many characters from game adaptations would even be discussed? Specifically Movie Sonic? Movie Mario? If we go off the limit of "characters from adaptations of games are fine, but only if the series was started as a game," I don't know how many doors that would even open in the first place

It's time for the rise of Bluster Kong, with a transformation Final Smash that turns him into Leo Luster.

While I would be intrigued by what the appearance of Ash or Team Rocket in Smash would mean for the future, I wouldn't have a whole lot of interest for them. Now which Trainer would get the most positive attention from me?

So happy Pokemon Colosseum and XD are coming to Gamecube NSO.

So I suppose I should ask a Donkey Kong related question while it's hot... with Bananza on the horizon and this revived brand interest in DK from Nintendo, how are you all feeling about the series' overall status next Smash? Is this activity enough for the whole DK crew to be safe? Do you think the opportunity is there for a new Donkey Kong character right now?

I suspect a lot of answers will be "depends who shows up in Bananza", although I've been pretty confident that K. Rool will stick around next Smash one way or another. I'm not personally counting on a new DK character, but Cranky Kong has been on my mind more often than usual... All in all though, this hasn't changed my mindset outside of being confident the design changes will be in effect. I've been much more optimistic about DK than most, so I guess that levels out.

I mean I've been assuming we're keeping all three of them going into next game anyway because DK is an obvious keep, Diddy's pretty crucial in my eyes, and K. Rool was a super popular choice.

I dunno if I expect a new DK character tbh, but I definitely see us keeping what we already have character wise. Probably tweaks to DK and Diddy's designs, potentially their actual voices, though I don't know how those changes would apply to K. Rool if they do at all lol

I'd imagine we keep all three characters, with DK and Diddy being brought up to K. Rool's level in terms of personality / moves.

I feel like there's other characters they'd prioritize before another Kong, but I think Dixie/Funky/Cranky are in a better spot than they've ever been in terms of being at least considered.

The big x factor with DK is the degree of future plans beyond Bananza (spin-offs, more 2D Country titles, a media push via a hypothetical DK movie). Not only would that likely affect the degree of additions to Smash like say a Dixie or Cranky being added, but also the degree of reinvention for DK, Diddy, or K Rool if he does indeed pop up in Bananza. It's the most significant push the series has had in a long time and unlike the Retro games (whose additions really didn't seem to be incorporated into Smash beyond one stage in Smash 4) it feels more likely that we'll be seeing the aftereffects in games beyond just mainline Donkey Kong titles.

You already have fans that feel the series is hit and miss with its representation in Smash via the excess focus on jungle levels and certain moveset choices with DK/Diddy. With what Bananza seems to be moving towards, if there aren't notable changes to the IP in SSB to reflect that, it's going to feel even more out of sync with the actual scope of the franchise, even beyond the somewhat anachronistic feel Kirby has now. A full blown from the ground up Smash sequel could likely incorporate that, but something that's the equivalent of an Ultimate Deluxe could be a Frankenstein monster patchwork of DK representation if the attempts to update its standing feel halfhearted.

At the very least, as others have said, DK’s moveset, animations and personality should all be reworked to accommodate for his new design.

Does Sora's steamboat willie alt count as representing non-gaming media?

You know because that's what he looks like in that shorts world.

....I guess? Never really thought about it because it's a design made for a game to reference old shorts rather than... well... Timeless River Sora having a cameo in Steamboat Willie.

Yeah, the one with the metal plate on the cap, iirc.
It's slightly based on the anime, but the metal plate is literally the only reference that alt has.

Out of his alts that feature alternate cap designs, only his orange palette matches the cap design used. His "NEO GEO" cap is from Fatal Fury 1 promo art, and the color of his clothes matches his FF1 sprites (except he still has red shoes instead of white).

Heck the Mickey symbol itself in smash just reference the Mouse himself. That's basically slightly opening pandora's box anyway.

As far as new characters go, I think it hinges on exactly when the design documents are drafted up. Given that Sakurai's working on Air Riders at the moment, it's entirely possibly he still hasn't started the planning process, so when he finally gets around to that he'll probably decide to give DK some more focus as a series. At the very least, I expect the three fighters we already have to come back

It depends on if there's space and priority. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong are staying no question. As optimistic as people can be about him, I just can't see King K. Rool as a lock.

As for a new character, I'd put Dixie Kong, Cranky Kong, and Funky Kong in wildcard status. I don't think they're predictably likely, but they are within the realm of possibility, Dixie and Funky especially.

No, because it's not Steamboat Willie being represented. It's Kingdom Hearts.

It's Sora, a character from Kingdom Hearts, taking on an appearance, also from Kingdom Hearts, that's inspired by Steamboat Willie and other classic shorts.

Killer Instinct, anyone?

We'll get Quest 64 and Mischief Makers before we get DK64, DKR and SSB on N64 NSO.

Still, it is nice to see more Rare titles in general get onto NSO. And I know a certain fighting game enthusiastic Youtuber is losing his marbles right now.

Donkey Kong 64 is especially funny to me because of Bananza coming in two months and being the first 3D DK game since 64, and as we've seen from Nintendo Today even has a remix of Rambi's theme from it lol

Unless...

puts on tinfoil hat

They're PURPOSELY holding off on it until Bananza comes out! Why? Because it'll have CROSSOVER CONTENT! It could have a way to transfer your data from 64 into Bananza, and you could get Special Rewards(TM) in the process! New Chunky Mode!!!

...

Or it could just be because of Jetpac again. That's also possible...

Somedays it feels like Nintendo cares more about Rare than Microsoft does. Like, I know it's just a rerelease on a web service, but when was the last time Killer Instinct was considered relevant?
Who do you think okayed KI on the app?
Also KI 2013 had an anniversary update a year and a half ago so.

For some reason, you saying this suddenly reminded me that out of all the Kongs, they brought Chunky back for the Mario movie alongside Diddy and Dixie in the audience when Mario fights DK. Like he actually does have a recent appearance under his belt and could THEORETICALLY show up in a game again lol

They say he still roams Smashfest to this day...

Jokes aside, if Chunky actually did become one and do the "one HELL of a guy" slam with the raining bananas like that fake claim said, that would be the greatest full circle of a running joke I think I've ever seen.

And thus the Rare love keeps flowing. Wouldn’t be surprised if a new B-K comes from a Microsoft X Nintendo partnership at some point. Banjo has never been safer for next smash.
