Takamaru isn’t quite my preference for a new “retro” character these days but I still like the guy well enough. I think Smash is overdue for a samurai in any capacity. I would say that it might be the most glaring absence in archetype on the roster, especially given Smash’s cultural background and the multitude of sword users.

I’d love the aforementioned Samurai Goroh or even Haohmaru (who I want a lot, actually) but I think our best bet for this next game maybe a TOTK Ganondorf.

You juxtaposing Duck Hunt Dog and Popo/Nana with Takamaru kinda proves my point doesn't it? I would never describe those designs as bland.
I don't see how that proves your point, seeing how they're all old school designs from the same era. Besides, I never thought Takamaru's design was bland.

Interesting that Takamaru went from "yeah he'd be cool" to "eeeeeeeeh".

As a character he lacks the fleshing out that other comparable characters get since he has yet to leave the NES outside of cameos and such. He probably would benefit from a reimagining with that in mind. I would like to see them keep the range sensitive button mechanic from Mysterious Murasume Castle though, as that's currently the main identity of the character beyond just "samurai".
They really should just make a second game in the series, since they seem to love the original over at Nintendo so much.

That would practically guarantee him a Smash spot tbh

Although for retro reps it’s not as necessary.

Apparently one reason he hasn’t appeared in Smash is the fact that his game was Japanese exclusive for a while.

Everyone I’ve seen propose this just makes him boring. I prefer “weird”, expressive and fun Luigi to squeaky clean brand “accurate” Luigi any day of the week.

I say that as a massive fan of Luigi - maybe my love for him budding from the RPGs contributes to my appreciation of this quirky, funny adaptation of the character. But I feel like in a fighting game you want to draw out a character’s most extreme traits. Asking Smash to pull back is just strange to me.
I didnt mention it but i would emphasize his scardness like in the mario movie or luigis mansion!

Yeah he was passed on in SSB4 since nobody really knows him compared to the others who at least shined in the era their games were released in. Like if there was a Smash game on the NES, most of our NES characters (including R.O.B.) would be in the running to be on it off of star power alone, but that's not really the case for Takamaru as far as I know.

I like Sakurai headcanon luigi as well, but his ultimate iteration is abysmal. I don't understand how centralizing his game plan around nuclear grab combos is meant to convey his character.
I think they were trying to min-max Luigi's archetype in Ultimate, but the result mostly blows. I would gladly trade the touch of death combos to get Rising Cyclone back.

While talking about Luigi, I always found it weird he was the slower and stronger one of the Mario Bros. in Smash when it's usually the other way around in the games. If you take Smash 4 Luigi, knock down his power, make him faster than Mario and give him a wall jump, he's like 95% perfect to me.

If Smash wants to bring in a surprise, more obscure retro first party character, I think Mach Rider could be really cool. I’ve always thought their design was cool and it would be fun to have a character beyond Wario that uses a motorcycle. Mach Rider would likely use that much more heavily than Wario too.

If they want a retro third party character, my favorite are the Battletoads. They’re basically already perfect for Smash with over the top expressive animations and taunts with designs that really stand out. They also perfectly represent the era they came from and are basically the embodiments of 90’s attitude and style. Their historical roots with Nintendo help a lot too.

My preference is still Excitebiker, with their content focus at least including music from across the Excite series (particularly ExciteBots because that soundtrack is so good).

If it's workable, Mach Rider could be a fun Echo Fighter, though I could see wanting a full moveset for more 007 agent vibes.

If I can accept characters like these:
The difference is, there isn't really any competition for iconic Dog/Bird duo or fighting eskimos in video games.

There are much better options for iconic video game samurai.

Even though Haohmaru and Mitsurugi are both the MCs of their respective series, I still think Nakoruru and Nightmare are better picks.

Mitsurugi is the main character of Soul Calibur? I thought it was Kilik or Siegfried.

Just thought I'd share this from the Unpopular Ideas/Opinions thread:

I think Smash could use a stage based on one of the Dance Dance Revolution arcade machines with colorful visuals in the background that vary depending on the song. I'd love to hear Smash remixes of Afronova, Trip Machine, PARANOiA, AM-3P and Dynamite Rave.

Oh, and they should definitely use songs from other BEMANI games as well.

But this is specifically about if Takamaru was that samurai character in Smash and whether or not he should get a redesign. I'm just saying why I'm fine with him not getting one.

Nakoruru is a strong choice in her own right, and all signs point to her being the one if they did go for SamSho, but I personally just really think Haohmaru has great potential to stand out independently. He's got one of my favorite samurai character designs, he really pops whereas I think many similar series would portray a character like this as kind of a 'default'. Haohmaru shines with personality from his appearance alone, and the lack of samurais in Smash overall mean there's pretty much nobody like him to begin with.

I think SamSho's core dynamics are what excite me the most about it being in Smash. So we're talking the fact that you can be disarmed or drop your weapon, "Rage Mode", that kind of stuff. I think going with the somewhat more straightforward swordsman allows these mechanics to take center stage where it might feel like a bit too much with Nakoruru. Who would already have her whole, yknow, bird thing going on, and stacking these abstract mechanics on top of a puppet character feels overwhelming. And that's the stuff I care about first and foremost, even though Nakoruru would be plenty fun.

SamSho character or not, a character who can be disarmed has become one of my most wanted mechanics because of how cool I thought it was in that game. I toyed with a Bandana Dee concept that plays with the idea of needing to run and grab your spear after throwing it, leaving you with various weaker physical attacks until you can reunite, stuff like that.

This could just be a hunch and I’ve never looked it up to confirm it but I get the impression that Haohmaru may have influenced the visual designs of other popular gaming samurai like Mitsurugi and Yasuo. All three do share some of visual similarities, particularly their hair.

Two other samurai that could be fun that I never mentioned are Fuji (Disgaea 7 protagonist) and Rokurou (Tales of Berseria party member). Both are demonic samurai that could be extra cool but I doubt either has much of a realistic shot. They’d be fun though. Yusuke/Fox (Persona 5) is samurai inspired and could be fun too, though Makoto/Queen is my next choice if we get another P5 character.

More than likely they, as well as Haohmaru himself were based on both Miyamoto Musashi and Kurosawa's portrayal of samurai, particularly and especially Toshiro Mifune who is practically the de-facto model for samurai characters.

And Mifune is still being used as a model for samurai today, with his likeness being used for Miyamoto Musashi in the new Onimusha. Which is a neat nod to Mifune having actually played Musashi in a movie before.

Edit: Oh and fun fact. George Lucas was a huge fan of both Kurosawa and Toshiro Mifune, especially "The Hidden Fortress", that before they got Alec Guinness for the role of Obi-Wan, George wanted Mifune to play the role of Obi-Wan in the first Star Wars movie, but sadly, Mifune was not interested in either Obi-Wan or Darth Vader after George tried again.
