I may just suck and not used to the controls yet, keep thinking of trying to be like mario kart or crash CTR lol.

Anyway sleeping now, but leaving this hear to keep peoples minds of the awards. This thread is not nearly as bad as some of the otheres though.

Character I want: Reimu
Character to please their fans: Master Chief
Character a friend wants: Jill Valentine/Leon Kenedy
Character from unrepresented franchise: Demi-Fiend/Aleph/Flynn(Persona is the spin-off of SMT, and while I love Joker and P5, the fact that the spin-off got represented before the main series is just sad)
Joke character: The Goose

1. Reimu dur.
2. Kos-mos since so many people are talking about her.
3. Master Chief/Doomguy since my brother and dad would love those two.
4. Neptune from Hyperdimetional Neptunia. Just because.
5.dogoo. Enough said.

I remember watching the voiceless version of the first episode/episodes/arc years ago - I should look up the rest some other time.

Also:
1/4: Reimu/Phoenix Wright
2: KOS-MOS
3: The ressurected protagonist from Altered Beast
5: A Furyhorn from Etrian Odyssey

Can we expect regular reports from you here or Papagenos?
I think it’s better if Mage does the reporting.
If any of the big names had it, people will be scrambling over each other trying to deconfirm Reimu.
Which is basically what happens anyways...

Agree. That's basically why I didn't bring the doujin leak first to the newcomer speculation thread.

MindlessMage MindlessMage You should be careful if you plan on sharing information. If the info ends up actually being credible, you risk Nintendo Ninjas cracking down on the doujins and/or sources that share information with you. Not to mention you would be subject to scrutiny and risk being consumed by the internet masses if you share too much (similar to Sabi, Verge, etc.). Always better to be cautious when it comes to dealing with this sort of stuff, regardless if you're allowed to share info or not.

I've already voiced some of these concerns to him on twitter. He's basically only updating somewhat benign info at this point. At least publicly on the twitter.

While not Nintendo, The Pokemon Company is going HAM to find the people who leaked the SwSh stuff. They recently got approval to subpoena discord and even 4chan to find who leaked the stuff. And if they find the leakers, you know they're gonna make an example of them to all future potential leakers.

If only the Pokemon company put as much effort into their games as they do trying to identify leakers, lmfao.

I'm not a Reimu surporter by any means, but if I missed something, it's kinda eye rolling how Smash speculation keeps ingoreing this character that has a huge leak over them that has not been disproven yet

Like you have no ideal how many times I had to bring up "what about that Reimu leak" to my friends when they are thinking anyone who hasn't been debunked yet

It seems like others outside of this thread has forgotten that Reimu was and still is on top in terms of leaks because they think that Reimu is too niche for Smash.

Most speculation is about FP5 and Vergeben has deconfirmed her for that place.
Other than that, Touhou is a niche franchise in the west and Reimu is not that popular on here. Also, most people know about her of memes, music and doujins (fanwork im general, not porn, though it plays a part) which is why people see her not really as a gaming character, even though she is one.

Yes, Reimu pretty much checks all the marks for a newcomer but people don't like to speculate about characters they don't care about. So they either ignore it or shoot it down. Its the same reason why I don't talk about Geno or KOS-MOS. Though, KOS-MOS has a pretty damn cool design.

Without intent to rain on anyone's parade, I am still very skeptical of the doujin leak. There's quite a few possible holes, even if nothing has definitively kiboshed it yet.

Yeah, I still wouldn’t really call it a “huge leak.” There’s nothing really substantial and there’s still the possibility that there was a big misunderstanding that spun into a more widespread rumor.

Which is a bit funny since it seems like Sakurai has been giving love to lesser mainstream series, dead series, or series that has big recognition in other countries.

I feel like no series is "Niche" for Smash since Smash helps boost their popularity. Dragon Quest is a more mainstream example of this: Huge in Japan but has a cult following in the West. People got upset Hero made it in while Japanese fans were excited. And now his inclusion helped boost the sales of the other DQ games.

Touhou would be an Indie example of that and it has its place in gaming history, even if it's a doujin series.

That actually makes me wonder what Japanese Smash fans think of the possibility of Reimu getting into Smash. I wanna assume the idea is a big more positively received there than here for obvious reasons.

But I can see Sakurai using DLC to throw the fans some bones while trying to elevate smaller, less recognized, or more cult-like series to fans for some variety and love, including Touhou depending on how much DLC we do get post-pass.

iirc A Ayumi Tachibana said that they're split and some Japanese fans actually see her as a meme character, which makes sense given how closely ingrained Touhou is with memes in Japan.

That makes sense. When something becomes ingrained as a "Meme" in its culture, it's hard to take it seriously even if it's a legitimate possibility. Though that's less of a strike against Touhou and more of how Internet and fandom cultures is as a whole.

I guess it all comes down to how Sakurei views the series. Like does he see it as an actual game or just a meme.

Sakurai is a full blown gamer and, among others, a old-school space ship shmup fan. He even collects figurines of those ships.
Seeing that he knows his way around the gaming landscape and finds interest in just about anything gaming related, I'm pretty sure that he is at least familiar with Touhou as a franchise. How could he not? Touhou is pretty big overseas.

The question is more if he likes the series, which ultimately only he himself can answer. Though, I don't believe that he ever mentioned or publically came in contact with anything Touhou related, so I would assume that he either dislikes or is just indifferent to it.

Yes like Touhou fangames have started appearing on the Switch so he would at least know of it. I would lean more of indifference since there was that time that ZUN himself said that he would like Reimu to be in Smash. Now that doesnt mean that Sakurei feels the same way but we should take that into consideration. Does ZUN and Sakurei know of each other? Like if they met or something. That should be the big question.

Well, you see. Sakurai actually met up and played Smash with Toby Fox, who was inspired by ZUN for Undertale (among others), which naturally leads me to believe that those occurences have nothing to do with whether Sakurai and ZUN know each other. :nifty:

As far as I know, no known contact between the two has ever happened. They might know each other in privat or they might not. Its empty guesswork at this point.

I could totally see Toby Fox mentioning Touhou in Smash to Sakurai, haha.

Sakurai never mentioned he was a huge fan of Persona until Joker came out to be fair. Nor did he mention his huge love affair with SNK until the showcase (iirc?) So I doubt he'd dislike the series. I think it's very likely he's at the very least heard of it since he seems to be a fan of danmaku games himself.

Toby as the ultimate Smash fan Nintendo hates. Gets invited by Sakurai himself to play Smash only to greet him with "So, Reimu for Smash when?"

Thats reassuring to hear. I would really love to see Sakurai gushing on about Touhou as a series for the first time while he presents the moveset of Marisa Reimu.

Papa knows the majority of what I know. I do more of my updating in Reimucord so now people expect updates whenever I type in the speculation channel haha. I have no idea if Papa is gonna talk about my findings or when he will. I can't control him, controlling people is wrong.

People have DM'd me asking how I'm handling the leak, some people asking if I can give them an update on it, and some people asking for the names. The names of everyone involved are like never mentioned and I won't give special exclusive updates to people just because they asked me to. I get info when I get info. I'll share it when I feel it's right to share it. The Smash community can be so impatient sometimes...

Skydrift is fun as ****, but it does need a bit more polish like I thought it was going to need. Music is pretty damn good too. Shame barely anyone plays online.

Yeah. Things like invisible walls blocking otherwise obvious paths and seemingly random areas being considered out-of-bounds. And the JPEG fog. Only minor things, but that's what polish is for.

It could use more single-player content and race tracks too. You breeze through the story and the extra story in like a little over an hour.

To be fair Sakurai also didn't mention K. Rool much at all before he got in (only really talked about his Mii Costume in Smash 4 IIRC) and never talked about Piranha Plant before they got in so even if he hasn't talked much at all or anything about Touhou he could still like and respect the Series and ZUN.

Being mentioned and not mentioned isn't the end all be all as if being mentioned publicly by Sakurai was a determining factor Steve would've been in already which of course he isn't so I wouldn't worry about that.

As for the recent Doujin leak updates they're fairly interesting I hope this all means that Reimu gets in Smash eventually. Touhou is a great franchise and I'd argue the progenitor of indies as a whole (or y'know at the very least popularized them) so to see it get in would be really cool.

Well to be fair, K. Rool and Piranha Plant are kinda different. Rool was demanded for quite a while, even before his Mii costume. In fact, I saw a lot of demand for him well before that and the reveal of that costume had a lot of people disappointed. Not to mention that both Rool and Plant are recurring characters in series that have been represented in Smash since the beginning.

You are right about mentions, though. Things can't really be narrowed down too much just based on what Sakurai publicly shows interest in.
