So I’ve been reworking my moveset ideas for Shantae recently and I’d like to share my fully updated moveset. Let me know what you guys think, I would really like to get some feedback on them:

On-screen Entrance: Shantae flies in with Sky on Wrench and hops onto the stage saying "Ret-2-Go!"

Neutral Attack: whips her hair to attack up to 3-times in succession (Both the down tilt and neutral aerial also use the hair whip)
Dash Attack: Slides forward with her feet up (Rottytops race from GBC game)
Forward Tilt: Power Kick from Pirate’s Curse
Up Tilt: She manually pushes her ponytail upward to have it whip opponents from above

Forward Smash: Elbow dash from the first Shantae game, propels her forward a good distance
Down Smash: Puts her hands together and shakes her hips forward then backward (uses the dance mapped to the A button in the first game/elephant dance from Risky’s Revenge)
Up Smash: 2-hit spin kick from the first Shantae game, the kick could potentially knock any opponents in front of her upwards to get hit by the somersault

Forward Aerial: Based off her twirl attack from the first game, she spins around ballerina style with her hair hitting opponents as she twirls around. Propels her forward in the air
Back Aerial: Thrusts her hip back similar to Peach
Up Aerial: In a pose similar to her Half-Genie Hero artwork, she thrusts her hand upward with a Fireball in her hand
Down Aerial: The drill attack from the first game, similar to Sonic’s Down air, but can hit an opponent more than once.

Grab: non-tether grab and she pummels her opponent by using her hip.
Forward Throw: She hair-whips her opponent.
Back Throw: Throws her opponent behind her while using Flamethrower to torch her opponent, hits multiple times
Up Throw: Tosses her opponent up and hits them with multiple scimitars orbiting around her
Down throw: Throws her opponent to the ground and uses Super Mega Puff to shock her opponent

Neutral Special: Transformation Dance, similar to Half-Genie Hero, Shantae dances and activates a selection of transformations around her and must select a direction to transform similar to Shulk’s new Monado Arts activation (lasts for 10 sec., shield and B to cancel out) Each Transformation would have one attack and one special attack

Forward-Monkey (Low Damage, High Jump, Wall Climb)
Attack: Monkey Claw (overhead slash, easily combo with it)
Special: Monkey Bullet (weak but fast dash, slightly slower than Fox Illusion)

Down-Elephant (High Damage, Low Speed)
Attack: Elephant Dash (slow but powerful dash attack)
Special: Elephant Stomp (high knockback)

Back-Spider (double jump allows her to use webbing to pull herself up if a surface is above)
Attack: Spider Leg (performs an uppercut with her frontal leg similar to the Bonelegs enemy in HGH)
Special: Spider Venom (continuously deals damage similar to flowers)

Up-Harpy (Less Traction, Multiple Jumps)
Attack: Harpy Talon (overhead slash, potential meteor smash?)
Special: Harpy Feather (low damage, but can fire multiple at a time)

Side Special: Triple Fireball-shoots out three fire balls-one straight forward, one angled upward, and one angled down.

Up Special: Storm Puff-summons a Storm Puff to hang on to as it floats upwards for a bit, the puff will send thunder down at its peak and disappear after. She can jump off at any time, but if she hangs on too long she’ll be shocked off in the direction she’s facing (no damage).

Down Special: Pike Ball-similar to Mega Man’s Leaf Shield, one Pike Ball revolves around Shantae. It lasts a bit longer but can’t be thrown.

Final Smash: Half-Genie’s Power: To start, Shantae would transform into the mermaid to trap her opponents in bubbles which would gather into one, then all her main transformations from HGH (Mermaid, Crab, Bat, Mouse, Spider, Harpy, Monkey, and Tinkerbat) fly back and forth across the screen to tackle the captured opponents similar to Super Sonic, and finally she’d fly up off-screen to smash the opponents to the ground with the giant elephant and send them flying. (inspired by several attacks Shantae uses for her boss at the end of Pirate Queen’s Quest)

Her taunts would consist of some of the belly dances from the GBA game, specifically the ones mapped to the D-Pad (potential Easter egg could have you transform to a Tinkerbat for a moment when you put in the button combination for that dance)

Idle Animations:
-Straightening out her hair like in Pirate’s Curse
-Places her hand on her hip and puts out her finger to create a dancing flame (cover art for Risky’s Revenge)
-Imitates Rottytop’s idle stance for a bit

Victory Animations:
-Spinning around in midair like she does when she completes a stage from her games
-Her flying in her monkey form to grab a gem, then transforming back to perform a dance (like in Super Shantae NAB)
-Landing from a jump and performing her Stage Clear pose from HGH

Other Details:
-She has the ability to crawl (along with the butt wiggling animation).
-Her default idle stance would be her full health dancing animation in Pirate’s Curse and Half Genie Hero, but it'd change depending on the damage she's taken like in those two games.
-Air dodge would resemble the Recovery move from Pirate’s Curse
-Her Screen KO animation would resemble the one used in the Officer costume

Do you think Shantae's worst nightmare upon getting in Smash would be realizing how the Inklings' ink would stick to her hair?

or god forbid if Dixie also gets in, bubblegum?

Eh she’ll be fine, the Inklings apparently got over their fear of water seeing as how they’ll have to deal with Greninja, Squirtle, Corrin, Mario and Pac-Man (fire hydrant)

EDIT: I guess Villager as well considering their watering can

Man the WHY DO PEOPLE WANT (BLANK) meme is taking over this thread by storm. Even Mario can’t avoid being generic.
The sad thing is, "Why Do People" is not even an original meme. It's been part of the Zero Escape fandom for years.

Well, here's something I noticed when I saw WayForward's 60K followers tweet.

They indicated that HGH won't be the last Shantae game. They also, of course, ignored every tweet that was asking for her to be in Smash.
I seriously do not envy Matt and whoever is behind Wayforward's Twitter. If they truly are under NDA, having to basically ignore so many people asking that question must be torture. Best case scenario, I'm sure they would love to make the fans happy by shouting from the hilltops "YES SHE'S IN!" but can't because they don't want to ruin the surprise (and have Sakurai send his Ninjas after them). They must be bursting at the seams trying to keep it in or at least I would be if I were the guy behind the Twitter account

I think this should be spammable like in her games, BUT they should have ZERO knockback and ZERO flinching for all characters. It should be about 3% with each successful whip, so its incredibly weak, but just likes Fox's gun, its deadly if not kept in check.

The reason why it works for fox's gun is because it's a projectile (i.e. you aren't using that at point blank range). Most jabs are used as quick "get off of me" moves and sparingly in combos. Removing all knockback and flinching would cripple her close-game. The three hit jab with the final hit doing the most KB would suit her just fine.

Actually, since the ink does more damage to opponents, and since she'd effectively be flinging it onto her opponents with the hair attacks, wouldn't it also be beneficial to her in Ultimate? I mean, yeah, she would have to spend hours at Saliva Island just to clean it off, but at least the battle would be quicker so she could head off to clean it faster.
And hey, it'd give her an excuse to stay at the islands in the first place. And maybe she'd be able to knock out another one of those "unlockable picture photoshoots" in the process.

That'd either remove viability of the move if there's too much lag inbetween bonus jabs, or make it a broken damage tool if the lag between bonus jabs is miniscule.
I do support the idea of a three-part jab and an infinite, though. Just maybe with a little knockback.

I’d say maybe 5% since it’s shorter range than Fox’s gun and that’s the starting damage in her games, i initially based it off Mega Man’s neutral attack, maybe no knockback, but the move should probably have some flinching

I have my tilt ideas listed with neutral and dash attacks (Also, how did you put in my username like that?)

Most likely the second one, then nerfed to the first. Me personally, gotta find that sweet spot so its not broken, but not to slow where you can't get any value. Thats me though. I'm an extreme casual, so idk whats really broken or not.

If she makes it in the game, a small part of me wants to congratulate WF entirely on the basis of being able to conceal their excitement/disappointment to this extent.

How about make her neutral A when held down do a fast, disjointed, get off me type of move that can also combo and rack up damage quickly?

On serious note, I think Shantae's inclusion would be one of the sweetest AND saltest reactions since she has so many supporters and haters.

No worries. I'm lowkey hoping that she's broken myself, so I'm not opposed to it being unbalanced XD

But balance is very important in this type of game, so I doubt that'll happen. And even then they'd nerf her.

Glad to see you visit. I do wonder, why is it that Smashboards is not as toxic. I mean, you can find the bad parts of Smashboards if you know where to look, but you can generally support whoever without to much of a hitch. I don't go any of those of other sites, so I would not know the difference. Anyway, hopefully you play the Shantae games soon, they are rather fun. Stated with Pirate's Curse myself. I do have to say though, besides the hair whipping, Shantae and Dixie have little in common. I don't think either really affect each other that much.
Oh I’m very aware they wouldn’t have much in common besides the hair whip. That said, I legitimately just want at least one character that uses a hair whip like attack (I like both the candidates there haha). But no, they have zero bearing on one another (Unless Shantae gets in the game and Dixie stills a hair whip as an echo... hmmm...I like that idea).

Oh I’ve been meaning to for ages. Is the original worth playing first though? I’ve been eyeing it on the 3DS eShop for some time, and I always have a tendency to like to start with the earlier games in a series if I can (Makes me backlog a lot worse though lol). I know it’s much simpler, and the later games seem to be where the series hits its stride from what I’ve seen.

As for the whole GameFAQS and SmashBoards thing, I think the existence of character threads and the more vigilant mods help to breed a better environment for discussion and support. It’s nice to not have to see the constant barrage of meme responses and the “you’re delusional” comments on that site. I’d be more inclined to it if there was some genuine discussion and positivity, but it just always feels like an occasional supporter and then the rest being memers or people with a bone to pick with characters and their fans...

Also, I can understand disappointment with not seeing Shantae in the Indie Direct some people have mentioned, but that’s probably the worst way ever to just upstage everything else they talk about. I still watched it just in case (and because I like indies, Transistor on Switch is going to be sweet).

As much as I would love to see Shantae move at literal break-neck speeds, because lets be honest, that would be hilarious, I don't think that would be allowed.

I must...SPAM...NEUTRAL.

I can understand that in a competitive sense, but I think she would do really well in that sense. Kinda like Dr Mario mains. They're always on the defense, at least in Sm4sh, so Shantae might be more defensive, but COULD carry offensive movesets.

Personally, I see one of Shantae’s biggest attributes being strong, varied levels of mobility and I wanted to reflect that in my moveset ideas for her. Let’s just say when she moves forward, she moves WAY forward. (pun entirely intended and I will not now nor will I ever apologize for it)

That's a really cool idea for a moveset - I think maybe a little too intricate on the transformation details (I think each transformation would probably have 1 attack if this was implemented), but the fact that every move or transformation references something from across the Shantae series is a very Sakurai thing to do.

I would say her neutral A would be similar to G&W's, where it does minimal knockback and locks you in, since spamming the hair whip is something you would do in the games.

Also, what design would you have for her? Pirates Curse or Half Genie Hero?

Name me one legal stage where spider Shantae can actually use her webbing.

I just don't like the idea of tranforming into modes that only give you one or two attacks. That's fine for a platformer, not so much in a fighting game where it just telegraphs your intentions.

Well, here's something I noticed when I saw WayForward's 60K followers tweet.

They indicated that HGH won't be the last Shantae game. They also, of course, ignored every tweet that was asking for her to be in Smash.
I would be horribly disappointed if it was the last Shantae game. We need more Shantae! Half-Genie Hijinks must ensue!

Also, I like that moveset mostly. I don't think that you would get four transformations out of it, so I would swap the Monkey to Side Special and change the Up Special to the Harpy. And instead of the Storm Puff, we could get Risky's Cannon? I dunno, just spitballing there.

If we're gonna be perfectly honest, there's a way to apply that to LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER.
Did we accidentally just start a new Smashboards meme?
Seems more like a copypasta, but I'll just give it a crack for fun (no hating).

WHY DO PEOPLE WANT DIXIE KONG!? SHE'S JUST DIDDY WITH A PONYTAIL
WHY DO PEOPLE WANT ISAAC!? HE'S JUST ANOTHER GUY WITH A SWORD
WHY DO PEOPLE WANT SANS!? HE'S JUST A MEME SKELETON

In all seriousness, I wouldn't mind any of these characters.

Well, here's something I noticed when I saw WayForward's 60K followers tweet.

They indicated that HGH won't be the last Shantae game. They also, of course, ignored every tweet that was asking for her to be in Smash.
Thank goodness for that, there's still some loose ends that will need to be addressed at some point. The bigger question is, will the next sequel be released this console generation? There hasn't been an installment made specifically for the Switch yet.

Really, the sad truth is that pretty much none of Shantae's transformations are designed for fighting. They're situational at best in such a scenario. Also, the problem with pirate gear is that it's established she only really used them to compensate for her then lack of magic. Why cannon jump when you can harpy fly? Why pistol shoot when you can shoot magic fireballs?

Although I have not played the original myself, I hear it is flawed, but is one of the highlight of the GBC era. It's sequel Risky's Revenge also suffers from being on the shorter side, but after that the game's generally start hitting there stride. While I did start with the third game, something did happen in the secound that has a huge effect on the third, so playing the games before that makes sense.

Ouch. A lot of Issac fans not showing any love for Shantae or any Indie characters in general.
Did something happen?
Also, did any of you already see this:
Yes, and it has been proven fake if I recall.
And yet, people treat Geno as the "perfect" smash choice.
I wouldn't go that far, but Geno does generally have the evidence and trends to back him up more so than any other character right now.

Just fans saying that adding Indie characters lose the Nintendo Legendary status of characters going against each other. Especially Shantae.
Well, I think we lost that a long time ago. The roster is certainly not comprised of "legendary" characters and Issac is certainly not one of them in the grand scheme of things. That is not an insult mind you, I think the same of Geno despite my full support of him and knowing full well his history. While I think SMRPG did a lot of important stuff, it's often not recognized for it, not really making it any form of legendary.

When Smash is one of the only games in history to have the high caliber roster that it has, spanning from past to present, I can't see why people would complain about Indie characters. I get that you wouldn't want to add any old Indie character, but Indies have been a major part of gaming in recent years and representing them shouldn't be seen as a bad thing. Just because they haven't been developed by huge developers, it doesn't mean that they can't be iconic. Shantae and (AT) Shovel Knight are proof of that.
