where was skull kid's assis trophy? There are two skull kid spirits, one with the mask (at 16:49 attached to dark samus) and one without (at 15:20 in a menu screen), I didn't see his assist trophy anywhere

I def have mixed feelings about the direct, and man what a bummer for Shantae to get shown as a spirit in the very last second of the direct after surviving the assist trophy section and the spirits mode reveal. Here's to hoping that doesn't disqualify her as dlc

Skull Kid, Dixie and Bandana Dee, outside of that all that's left are out there 3rd parties like Pheonix Wright and Dante.
I just don't believe Spirits = deconfirmation simply due to the fact that there were so many high profile, obviously popular characters stuck as Spirits.

We still don't know if Spirits can be DLC, nor do we know if we'll only get 5 fighters. Sakurai stated DLC will be done about a year from now, but Splatoon 2 has had consistent free updates for over a year and is still getting more, there's no reason not to believe we could get a Wave 2 for another year simply due to how big Smash is.

tl;dr this Spirit thing isn't what any of us expected, but I wouldn't count her out quiiiiiiiiiiiite yet.

Yeah guys we aren't down yet. As stated Wii Fit Trainer is also a spirit, so we could see Shantae still as one of the 5 DLC characters. Geno also was shown as a spirit so he's not out yet either.

If spirits meant no DLC, Sakurai gave a ton of characters the Ax today, which makes no sense.

Someone said they saw a K. Rool spirit too. So that means we know Shantae is at least considered for the game.

Kind of weird how Wayforward was so vocal about Shantae in the Smash Ballot, went completely quiet during Smash Ultimate's development, made a Jammies mode that hints at Ultimate, forbid Shantae from appearing in Indie Fighting games, all that for a glorified sticker! Well, at least there's DLC to look forward to, but Wayforward's behavior was implying that she was in the base roster. They were quiet since 2016 and they wanted Shantae as a DLC playable character in Smash 4. How'd she miss her chance?

Could be possible the silence was simply because they we're developing HGH.

Also, as others mentioned, just because she's a spirit doesn't mean she's completely out yet.

Other than Skull Kid yeah those are also viable.

I mean, I did not expect Spirits Mode to be a potential threat to Shantae of all things. It's neat that she appears at all, but...still... A freaking PIRANHA PLANT to makes it in as a playable character and Shantae gets a Sticker 2.0... (At least Bandana Waddle Dee supporters don't have to worry about the enemy with a hat argument anymore...)

They responded everything else except shantae being in smash, and they were pushing for shantae before that, when they were developping HGH.

So..... anyone still buying the game? I mean I do have Ridley and two Belmonts + Zero Suit Samus with exposed skin. Can't ignore that.

Oh trust me I would have pre-purchased this game instantly even if it were a straight port of Smash 4 plus Inklings and Piranha Plant. Switch is basically the perfect console for Smash in my opinion. Plus I already have more newcomers I'm excited about than I did for Smash 4 (wanted K. Rool for a long time), we get Wolf and Snake back, the gameplay looks really fun, I like new rule options, and I thought the previous Direct was almost as hype as this one was not. Ultimate still looks awesome.

In fact I just added my Switch friend code on here so add me guys! Let's all play some matches together when this game finally drops.

The plant is a bonus. so there's still 5 characters.
It's a pass, so there might be another one after the first year.

Pirahna Plant is separate from the other 5 DLC.

Well okay thank god then, I'm really glad to be wrong about that. I can respect a good WTF character and no character, not even Wii Fit Trainer, was as WTF as Piranha Plant.

Yeah this is how we should look at it. Let's be real, being an AT means instant death, but being a Spirit leaves your status up in the air.

Everyone should pour one out for our Isaacfriends, Skull Kidfriends and Shadowfriends, they were all hit really hard.

I would urge you guys to keep in mind that we don't technically know that Assist Trophies are official de-confirmation. There's no reason Nintendo couldn't offer an Assist Trophy to playable fighter upgrade as DLC, and some of those Assist Trophies, Spring Man in particular, had animations that looked suspiciously to me like they were designed for playable fighters. Good for other fanbases but not so good for us, those characters aren't definitely out of the competition.

It seems weird that WF would be silent all this time just for a spirit.

The way they reacted makes me think she isn't in with DLC. But they havent responded to questions about her in smash, so it's hard to tell

No matter how Shantae was in the game, whether as playable fighter or minor Spirit, WayForward would be under strict NDA. So their silence all this time doesn't surprise me.

As people have said in the thread already, if she is (somehow) a planned DLC character she could appear.

Okay, while its okay to be disappointed, this is just kind of rude...

It already takes a lot of effort to make a fighter, or even just an assist trophy. A spirit is a lot better than a trophy, because you can at least use it and have fun. The only concern is the possibility you cant "rank up" spirits. I'd like to be able to just stick with ones I like and not be essentially forced to use higher level ones.

Perhaps there's still hope for Shantae yet. Along with each new DLC fighter comes a new stage and song track. Shantae, who we now know exists in the Smash-verse and apply the knowledge of MewTwo in Smash 4 who still became a fighter despite having a trophy, has the best tracks.

You can put stickers representing a character on the same character in Brawl. This whole spirit thing means nothing against playable, and we should be proud our voices of support got her recognized at all. This is honestly the second best outcome.
