Hey, look, I try to do what I can to contribute to the site, but I seriously can't do everything just because I happen to agree with what others are saying. I really don't get why I'm asking for you guys to support adding things and I'm getting nothing but hate and "you matter less than us" in response.

If I came across as insulting anywhere in this thread, I'm sorry. I just disagree with the method the admins (and to some extent the Senators) use to make these decisions.

Since i know everyone on SWF cares about what Sveet has to say about issues, I will put my vote for 125x125 as that actually looked the best. I think it may have just been the image itself though. I like 100 simply because its what i have and id have to redo my avatar and im lazy

I like the 125 as well, would it be possible to give larger avatars to premium members, if so I don't think any more expansion is needed because it generates revenue.

and what was the discussion or official pow wow about increased imagenumbers per post. I think the simple fact that you cant even display hitboxes for all a characters moves in the op is shameful.

The biggest reasons for increased avatar size is pretty much what I already stated.

1) Larger avatars allow for more customizable space to work with.

2) Avatars are easier to see and less "ugly" when things get downed sized. This is very true when you cannot have transparency on images unless downsized to 100 to 100. With downsizing to a larger image, it gets less pixelated.

3) I doubt it takes a whole lot of effort to go from 100 by 100 to 150 x 150 or 125 x 125, and therefore is not much reason to be against an increased avatar size. (Although, I suppose that argument works backwards as well.

4) The current space where avatars go is large enough to accomodate increased avatar sizes without distorting the layout of the site.

5) Judging from the responses on this thread thus far, there is certainly interest among multiple members other than simply one person making the suggestion.

Are there any points against larger avatars besides longer load times for people using a 1G wireless connection at the South Pole and it making threads an unnoticeably small amount longer?

It has to be stored on the SWF server which means increased file sizes which could potentially increase the cost of maintaining the site.

I think it would be cool to only allow premium members to have the increased size. Stuff like that really incentives people to spend money.

Or the site could implement a pay per feature system. Like originally I wanted premium for the additional inbox size (this was just before the global size increase /wrists) since i was doing a lot of work on the CRL and Chicago Land Power Ranking at the time. The color and title stuff was an added bonus which i took advantage of. I never used the name change. A pay per feature system could potentially generate more revenue for the site in this fashion, though it could also generate less (for example the most popular features might net to less than the total of a membership now resulting in people spending less).

TBH though, I have no use for premium membership anymore. I have the awesome MBR name color and inbox size is much bigger. That said, i'm probably going to buy another year of premium when this one expires simply to support SWF.

Admins would probably have to toggle these features manually, so there's pretty much zero chance of something so time-consuming happening.

Well a business model change like that would obviously have to be presented to the owners of the site (aka, MLG) and i doubt changing the system would be that big of an issue if MLG thought they could make money off it

Just chiming in on the entire increase avatar size thing.
125x125 would be awesome, I feel like 150x150 is getting a bit much/a bit much.

As mentioned before it doesn't turn the page into ****. Also if you have Premium (or SMod+) use the skins and check out Ankoku's posts with side postbit, and tell me it doesn't look both nice and, well, nice. And that's at 187x208.

Oh and here's an image of what it would look like 125x125, I did this via Dragonfly on Opera. Don't mind the color of the username, I was just playing.

That seems fine to me. Besides, if you use top postbit, 125x125 wouldn't ruin the page as much as it would ruin side postbit either.

I'm pretty sure top postbit would be more affected than side postbit, as far as increasing avatar size goes.

Oh but I definitely don't like the idea to have it as a Premium perk. It's supposed to be a donation and not a pay per feature like you mentioned before.

Huh. That's an interesting idea. I'm not a big fan of rectangular avatars, but to be honest I haven't ever seen that in action. Though, at this point I think the biggest barrier we have is that file sizes will likely be larger.

Speaking of which, another forum I go to has a 25 KB size limit and 145x145 dimension limit. It basically means you can only use .jpg files. Would something like not raising the file size limit (or not raising it by much) be a possible compromise?

Even if you have a transparent image to start with, if the image needs to be resized to fit the 100x100px requirement for an avatar, it will remove the transparency.

So, resize the image to 100x100 before you upload it, and it will retain its transparency.

Yeah i was having that issue with this avatar change. Took me a good 30 min to remember that i have to resize it or it loses transparency.
