I've been playing Samus for a while and there is 1 match-up I'm having an extremely hard time with. Olimar. In the first tournament I went to, I got utterly annihilated by Olimars. It seems that no matter what I do, I always end up in a Pivot Grab started CG or an Up-Smash. Is there something I'm missing?
Olimar is a ***** to Samus. Avoid being grabbed. His grab is probably the only grab that is almost lagless. If you approach from above, you're just asking for a variety of different Pikmin. And Olimar can chain grab? Who knew? Samus' nair or uair should get rid of unwanted spam. Yes, I'm comparing Olimar to junk mail. His small size makes it tough for Samus to space herself. Zair would be useful, but he's the size of a mouse. Spam whatever you've got. Just because you spam doesn't mean you suck. It makes people hate you, but you know, that's their problem.

I noticed one thing while fighting Olimar and that is that some of them like to hang out under a platform that can be fallen through. The reason is is because if you try and approach Olimar from above, he can just u-smash you. At the same time he's safe because you can only attack him from the sides. I'd go ahead and try to zair him anyway. That should knock back any Pikmin thrown towards you. He may be short, but I'm positive he's not impossible to zair. If he just shields, pressure his shield with multiple Homing and Super Missiles. There's a reason the shield is limited. If you really want to pressure it, try and do a SH > Super Missile > Charge Shot. It's a great technique for pressuring shields and killing opponents.

Well.. I got a question: anyone know any smart control configuration that make the Short Hop easily? Its hard for me do in alot of rows soo any help?
In order to short hop, you just need to press X or Y or up on the control stick for about 4 or less frames. If you hold up on the control stick to jump, immediately followed by a direction on the C-stick, the new direction input of the C-stick cancels the upwards input on the control stick. This means you can flick both sticks to force a sh aerial. This does not work with up on the C-stick because obviously, you can't cancel 'up' by inputting another 'up'. If you change your C-stick to anything else for shield, grab, attack, special, it still works.
Question: Can Samus DACUS? Just making sure because I was playing with her and I did a sliding Up smash...
No, Samus cannot cancel her Dash Attack with her Up Smash. For all I know, the timing is probably 1 frame and nobody here has the reflexes to do it. As of now, Samus cannot DACUS. She can perform a sliding usmash, but so can EVERY CHARACTER IN THE GAME.

Olimar counters Samus. Counterpick or transform.

So there's nothing I can really do except to use mindgames or hope they suck. >_<

Guess I'll go practice Zamus/Transformation. Thanks

It was in Melee due to a glitch. And with AR we took apart and analyzed every possible action on every single frame. We don't have that kind of power in Brawl. Stop getting your hopes up. Snake has the mortar slide, Samus has practically nothing. These aren't the same games. Nintendo didn't copy and paste the characters over (though they did copy+paste the trophies). It can happen here, the chances are just absurdly low.
I'm not sure what you mean by analyzing every possible action on every single frame. You're saying that's how you found some glitches, SWD among them?
I guess I'll stop this line of inquiry in any case. And I wasn't getting my hopes up - I was investigating a possibility with critical detachment.

I'll look into it myself. If we really have nothing, it's not like there's a better use of my Samus time, right?

Instant double jump reaches a greater height than a shorthop, widening the window to zair after a fastfall. This isn't to get maximum range/minimum altitude. This is to land sooner after the hitbox comes out so that it's possible to get true combos.
Okay.

Can you humanly SDI out of Sheik's jabs? Do you have 2 frame reaction time? Can you SDI as soon as you see those 2 frame jabs occur? Can you move your fingers fast enough to SDI before the next jab comes out? kthxbi
If Ken can use Marth's jab to interrupt Fox/Falco's side B recovery in Melee, I can humanly SDI out of Sheik's jab. Assuming Ken is Human.

I already mentioned that there's difference between her first 2 jabs and her multi jabs. You can DI out of the multijabs by DIing up and away. Just DIing away will get you hit by ftilt.
And thanks for that.

Sorry if I sounded arrogant. Text is a poor (but effective) substitute for words. I hope I helped.
You didn't sound arrogant, and even if you did I wouldn't care; there are worse vices than arrogance, and it's not exactly like 'disagreeability' is even maladaptive in this context (Smashboards).
But 'kthxbai' is invariably a term of irritated dismissal. I can forgive you for being dismissive, but not for sounding dismissive, since that doesn't admit to what happened (i.e. atonement must precede absolution). So I have trouble seeing this as sincere.

Anyway, I don't take it very seriously, so there's no apology called for.

*~*~*~
New questions: For GOD'S SAKE how the &%$@ do I transform into Zamus? I have to kill my fingers (and six whole seconds) to do it. Why am I so bad at it? I have to use my right hand and get the controller into it with a shaking motion. But then my right hand stops moving before I finish, it completely tenses up.

All I need to do is enter a handful of up and down taunt in half a second, right?

Also, I hear there's an nair sweetspot. Where is it?

That's a big word. iirc, AR is what helped us discover HOW to perform the swd after it was performed by accident.
I'll look into it myself. If we really have nothing, it's not like there's a better use of my Samus time, right?
Practicing? We DO have technical techniques. Advanced edgehog, platform auto-land, ...that stuff Tudor does... o_o;;

Does Marth's jab's hitbox reach below the ledge? If the illusion/phantasm travels above stage, heck even I could jab through that. Hell, I could shine through that. SDIing a jab requires 2 frame reaction time, not even M2K the robot could do that. Xif might...

... uh... thanks for that. I'm going to go wash my brain now.

Can you extend Samus' grapple in Melee? It's pretty much the same thing, only even faster. Train your fingers. Try those 'clicking speed games' on the internet, or mash buttons in Mario Party. I hold my controler sideways and vibrate my index and middle fingers over the button. The transformation occurs in less than a second. Also, this is impossible with cold hands. Don't expect any results for the next 4 or so months.

The nair sweetspot is in the first couple frames of the move. Starting on frame 5, ending on... who knows. It's not a placement of the hitbox, it's the timing. Just like Falcon's knee: It's not placement, it's timing.

Has there or is there a thread for the grab release to down tilt? By this i mean on who does it work on vs. who it does not work on.

I just wanna make sure... A 3% charge shot gives just as much "stale moves" as a fully charged one. right? :ohwell:

I think he's asking if uncharged shots stale charged shots. And yes, each one counts as one move, no matter how much it's charged. I'm pretty sure it was tested a while back.

1) does it prove more effective to air dodge, before you Zair?
2) how many of us actually shoot uncharged beams on the ground/air?
3) is the first hit of the Fair comboable into just about..anything??

That depends on the situation, really. If you're holding a Bomb or Grenade, or Turnip, Mr. Saturn, or even a Banana, but you don't want to drop it yet, pressing L/R and then A will allow you to hold any of the items and still use z-air. Also, your opponent might try to attack you with a projectile attack, and you can air-dodge to avoid getting hit and then retaliate with z-air. If you simply want to strike fast, don't waste any frames on air-dodging and simply tap Z.

2) how many of us actually shoot uncharged beams on the ground/air?
I can't say I'm someone who does that. I like to have my Charge Shot charged up and ready to KO.

3) is the first hit of the Fair comboable into just about..anything??

thanks
You can try to link f-air into other attacks such as f-air to d-tilt or jab. U-air would probably be better, though. U-air to f-air, or u-air, u-air and then a Charge Shot. That's not to say you cannot use f-air to Screw Attack.

Umm.... So I'm playing a friend and his Samus can't use her grabbing jabs on Bowser. Is that normal?
Yes, that's normal. When this was brought to our attention, I went and tested it out. Sometimes it will work, sometimes it will not, depending on the damage percent. However, Samus is able to hit Bowser with her Chozo Chop if she grabs Bowser right next to the edge. What will happen is Bowser will be off the stage, but he will be in a state where he is grabbed. I successfully landed five hits, which is 5% damage on Bowser when he was at 0%. I didn't think that was possible to hit that many times from 0%.

Hey, is there any Samus mains or others who would be willing to upload some matches for me? I have some on my wii but no way to get them to my comp. I would like to show the samus community how I'm playing, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sry if this has already been asked.

When you grab the ledge with your Zair, how do you go straight to your invisibility frames?

Tap Z again or anything else that retracts the grapple beam. You don't get invincibility frames until you grab the ledge (on the ledge by hand not tether).

Crap... he's serious. Err... letsee... I believe the next course of action for Nintendo is to make a 2-D side-scrolling Metroid using the sideways Wiimote configuration.

  • Control Pad: Move/aim/morph ball
  • (1)+(2): Jump and Shoot (option to interchange the buttons)
  • (A): Toggle sub-weapons or new gameplay mechanic, such as targeting with Seeker Missiles, an upgrade that lets you charge your Speed Booster without running by shaking the Wiimote while holding down (A), activate Hyper-mode...? Just kidding about the Hyper-mode part... though that would be awesome.
  • [ B ]: Aim/arm missiles/new gameplay mechanic
  • (-): Bring up a menu to change equipment/weapons. Scroll through the menu with the Control Pad or moving/pointing with the Wiimote and (A/B) to select. (option to hold+release to enter/exit the menu or just pressing the button to enter/exit)
  • (+): Open/close the Map menu, scroll with Control Pad, zoom in/out with (A/B), (1) for hint, (2) to exit.
  • Wiimote: Tilt the Wiimote to aim... might be an interesting idea. Just copy+paste steering from Mario Kart and turn it into aiming for Metroid. If you tilt the Wiimote clockwise while facing right, you'll aim down, if you tilt it counter-clockwise while facing right, you'll aim up. The opposite is true for left. Might make for an interesting game. Aiming the shine spark would have to be controlled using primarily the Control Pad, though.

... oh wait... did you mean brawl?

Ok.. I'm serious...
What do you guys think of Samus's Future?
well, i think she will raise a bit on the tier list but nothing too drastic (like from bottom to top tier). i also think ppl will stop talking **** on her and take her as a serious opponent. im talking about when your facing someone for the first time and u pick samus and their like, " your joking right? or are u using zzs?"

but, i kinda like the fact that alot of ppl think of her as a joke. it really makes me happy to prove them DEAD wrong.

What are some good strategies against Shiek? I recently fought a pretty good Shiek and although I won, I found it tough cause she puts constant pressure on me.

Cyner you should check out Raging Ric Rohins destroying a shiek: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrQyEYJFbIc

He has lots of vids against gimpyfishes shiek that will give you some tips.

I have one too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0sCvQsR_b0

I don't think shiek is too hard really, shes tall enough to get hit by all our projectiles, the needle isnt too much of a bother, comboable in the air, gimpable. But if anyone else has tips they're probable better than mine, I don't play shiek much.

I have a question though! What are the specifics of losing your charge shot when getting hit? A lot of times I will lose it unexpectedly, or get batted around all day and still have it. Is it the strength of the move you get hit with? I think this could be good info for Samus's.

Samus' future relies on the number of people willing to take her to tournament. I don't think she will move on the tier list unless there is a larger volume of players placing decently with her. That being said...no decent sized tournament afaik has been won using only Samus.

@mrs1 - I've only lost my charge when i get hit when trying to shoot it. You can get hit out of it pretty early, and I've never lost my charge any other way. If there is another way to lose it that would be lame.
