I've always played Smash casually, but I am nowhere near anti-competitive. I think it's because I'm trying to get into the competitive scene in other video games. Though, I'd love to get into competitive Smash, but going to tournaments and whatnot, idk. I think I'm a little on the shy side for that. :nervous:

I didn't know this was a university, where people major in Super Smash Bros. Playing. I do wonder what kinds of subjects do we have here...

I'd like to know the thematics of the essays and articles written here. I think those would be a huge contribution to the scientific community worldwide.

The thing to remember about tournaments is to always have fun. If your entering one for the first time, don't expect to be a dominant force yet. Instead you should take whatever defeat you receive and use the experience as power. Remember, experience speaks louder then words.

I never went to a tournament, cause I knew I'd throw away money and was stubborn about playing my DK and Mewtwo. :smirk: Kinda wish I could enter a Brawl tournament though, as my Diddy is actually pretty good in Brawl. Will try and get my Ganon, Marth and Sheik up there in Melee to one time.

I once entered a videogame tournament. The environment was disgusting, almost made me puke.

When people start taking certain things (like videogames) seriously (as in SERIOUS BUSINESS), I get anger vibes crawling inside of me.

No, Smashboards is just keen on keeping the elite from the scrubs. And likes to teach scrubs how to play better, yet you'll first have to throw behind the way you're used to play. And that's why people hate tournament players. Sure, it sucks balls everyone and their dog use Fox, and you'll never beat them with your Yoshi, but yeah... **** SUX BRO. You think I enjoy having to play Sheik and Jigglypuff over my favroite Melee characters, DK and Mewtwo? No I don't. Luckily Marth is cool though.
It's not so much that people are asking for advice but Smashboards gives unsolicited advice. Basically, they come in where they are not wanted and tell everyone why they are wrong. Even when people ask for advice they don't know how to properly give it. The reason Smashboards thinks "non-noncompetitive players" are wrong (or more wrong) is that they can believe they are wrong. They can't see the writing on the wall.

Now for Fire Emblem.

I couldn't take it seriously though. I'd probably bring some herbal medicine with me to keep myself enjoyed. :happysheep:

Chu, people DO give you advice. But most likely, they'll just post you a video or tow on how to play the game propper.

Marth, Ike, Chrom, Roy.

All others are also cool. But not likely.

Hector and Sigurd are the manliest men the world has ever seen.

So anyone ever read "Death of a Salesman?" Had to read it for Uni, and words cannot describe how much I liked that play. Is there anything in Modernist Literature that is not flat out awesome? So much of it applies to modern times it's scary sometimes...

Anyway...

It's kind of sad we even have these debates because both games are really good. It's just competitive Smash tries to tell us how Brawl was SOOOO bad. Sadly, competitive Smash is kind of a cult.
I've never seen people say Brawl is bad, just people saying that Melee was better. Now as Frost said, "good" and "bad" are subjective, however, better and worse are not. One can very easily make an objective comparison between two things and make a reasonable conclusion. As others have already stated, Brawl was merely an improvement on the superficial aspects of the game, now you and I have already had this discussion before, in regard to game mechanics and what makes a game intrinsically good. If you'd like me to reiterate I'll more than gladly do so, but as it stands now, Melee is the better game as it's programmed more fitting to what Smash Bros is supposed to be: A Fighting Game. Quality over Quantity is the way to go in just about anything...

You know something, I'll get back to you on this whole debate, it seems this whole topic sparks so much controversy, and so many people, especially newcomers and casuals seem to miss why Melee fans prefer Melee. I think I'll make a video out of the whole thing, looking at the topic thoroughly and explaining our point of view. There is a reason to why people feel this way. No one is saying Brawl is bad mind you, but the argument that Melee>Brawl is a very strong one with many valid points. Expect me to link you to a video next time this topic come up, maybe then you'll finally understand why most fans agree that Melee>Brawl.

Look back to what I said before about TES and Skyrim, the ONLY TES game I've ever played has been a modded version of PC Skyrim, howeverm I've watched video of fans explaining why they feel Morrowind was a better game, and with all the points presented, I can understand their point of view. Can I agree or disagree? No, I've never played TESIII, but I can at least empathize.

Patternism would probably be the worst religion ever. Granted religion as a whole is just a bunch of morons fantasizing over some imaginary people, but for the sake of keeping this thread PG let's not dive into that.
Oh, I'm all up for religious debate it's handled in a tame and gentlemanly manner, just bear in mind that we WILL talk about ALL religions and Quantum Mechanics, as well as Cartesian philosophy and the like. The belief that there is more to the Universe than what we can perceive is a very powerful one and I don't care how strong of an Atheist someone may be, but to refute modern theories about layered realities and hyperdimensions extending toward the 10th dimension is plain ignorance, no different from that of a Zealous Christian who refuses to believe in evolutionary theory. The matter of the fact is that religion and science are both in a way, two sides of the same coin.

To get an idea of what I'm getting at here you may wanna watch this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjsgoXvnStY

As well as do some reading on
-Rene Descartes' "Discourse of Method"
-Plato's "Alegory of the Cave"
-String Theory
-Scrodinger's Cat
-and general Quatum Mechanics, including but not limited to Einstein's Theory of Relativity, and just about everything else that has stemmed from it.
-You might also wanna look at the double slit experiment and read a bit about Buddhist beliefs of Reincarnation and Nirvana, and the origins of Christianity and Judaism.

Personally I find the whole subject to be incredibly fascinating, and it's a topic I find myself discussing with my higher level 1-to-1 students. Quantum Mechanics and all modern Spiritual and Philosophical beliefs do their very best to address the questions we've been wondering all throughout our existence as a race. Now we're not exactly close to finding "the answer" but it's still a revolutionary movement, in a way, I feel we're at this moment going through a "2nd Renaissance," on which will have a huge impact on our future.

Don't like tourneys? Stay away form them then. Just because some people take the game seriously, that doesn't mean you should let that affect you.

Habanero simply gets all those Fire Emblem discussions.

Wow, Manly, you actually mentioned Plato's 'Allegory of the Cave.' Reminds me of my 10th and 1th grades Philosophy classes...
I did make a subtle reference to that in one of my posts here...

@shinpichu: That's what I did. And I rarely let other people influence me. In fact, I prefer thinking on my own and form my own view of the world. That has made me a little disconnected from society, though... not sure if that's good or bad... or both.

Roy vs Lyn IS interessting though. And both have a style I'd like in Smash, if of coarse imlemented well. Yet, Roy has the popularity thing, and the fact he was in Melee for him. Lyn's style is great, and I enjoy Manly's vision on how she would play, yet I cannot actually see her making the list.

The best Elibe Lord is still Hector though.

Ike will probaly always stay my favorite Smash Lord however. Wish that Aether would be more flashy and useful to.

Actually Roy's is Croph's husbando. I'm not Ghirahim (not that there is anything wrong with that :seinfeld: ).

At this point, I could give less of a crap for Fire Emblem at this point. Whatever happens, happens. Regardless, Marth will still be the definitive Lord to play as in these games, even if it's not the primary choice.

Hey man, don't fret. Just a little joke. But yes, that is technically right.

Marth will stay forever. But I could easily see Ike, Chrom and Roy getting cut from the next generation Smash games after this one.

I've read/studied Death of a Salesman in grade 12. There's so many things that I love about the play as well. Like the symbols, themes, and whatnot. "The jungle is dark but full of diamonds, Willy". Out of all the literature that we studied, Death of a Salesman was probably my favourite.

Death of a Salesman is a staple of Americana and a great reflection and study of it's time period but was too boring for me.

August Wilson's The Piano Lesson is the definitive American play imo.

I'm a sucker for Philosophy, and Plato's Allegory of the Cave is downright brilliant, first time I read it I was hooked on that.

Side note, did you know that The Matrix Trilogy is chock full of direct philosophical references to the works of philosophers such as Descartes, Plato and even Nietzche?

I've read/studied Death of a Salesman in grade 12. There's so many things that I love about the play as well. Like the symbols, themes, and whatnot. "The jungle is dark but full of diamonds, Willy". Out of all the literature that we studied, Death of a Salesman was probably my favourite.
I read other books back in High School, we read Heart of Darkness, Old Man and the Sea, Breakfast of Champions, Slaughterhouse 5, Absalom Absalom!, Hemmingway's autobigography which name escapes me, 1984, Animal Farm, Brave New World, The Great Gatsby, Catch 22, Hamlet, Julius Caesar, as well as some poems by Ezra Pound, Robert Frost and T.S. Elliot.

Recently for Uni I had to read T.S. Elliot's Hollow Men, LOVE IT, favorite poem by far, I also like Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken" and Pound's "In a Station at the Metro." The whole deal in Frost's poem about taking the less beaten path really stuck with me post high-school, and with Pound, I love his implementation of the Japanese Haiku.

As for favorite books from High School... I loved Brave New World and Heart of Darkness, those two really stood out from the rest, and since then I've always referenced them when talking to people. Especially after watching Fight Club. The Great Gatsby is another favorite of mine, I've recently had to re-read it for Uni, and it's brilliance is awe-inspiring.

I've also recently had to read "Snows of Kilimanjaro" by Hemingway recently, another story that's really sunk in with my personal thoughts recently. Ah, and I've also had to read Henry David Thoreau's "Walden," friggin' amazing book, transcendental literature is the best, I love the ideas and memes that have been a contrast to the rapid expansion of capitalism and the savage nature of consumerism have been around since the Industrial Revolution. I also love how Thoreau challenges and teases his reader with difficult to read and understand literary devices, 'Walden' was not an easy read.

Suddenly... literature!
I know right? Don't you just love this thread sometimes?

Naturally. A character that is very effective in the battlefield but can still look so fabulous is something we don't get often.
Hmm, ok hear me out on this guys... What if...
Lelouch was in Smash?

Ahh? Ah? Anyone...?

Coming from the guy who performed a 12-minute ranting cosplay as Willy for an English presentation/exam, I agree...except with the boring part.

You know what else isn't boring? Smash Bros. :troll:

One of the reasons competitive players try to get non competitive players who often find themselves in discussions they aren't qualified to be in (don't that sound pretentious) is so they gain perspective. Anyone can pick up smash and play whatever game mode, but to understand competitive Smash metagames you have to have experience and knowledge of the discipline; something playing free for alls on Flat Zone doesn't give you.

@Manly Out of all the literature you listed, I've only read was Caesar and Hamlet. I take it you're a fan of literature? Out of all the Shakespearean plays I've read, my fave is Hamlet. Idk, I just loved everything about it.

My favorite peice of classical literature would have to be The Tempest by Shakespeare. No one knows that one though. :(

On the topic of Smash Bros., the same voice actor who did the voice for Roy also did the voice for Lelouch in Japan.
Roy confirmed for FABULOUS!

Speaking of Taylor Swift, I just saw a picture of her the other day, Holy Christ that girl is hot, mai waifu! Now I see why she sells so many records, because musically, she's nothing to write home about.

Anyway, on literature, I'm not a huge fan of it, like it's not my passion.

I'm not much of a bookworm, though I do like to read and study different topics, so you'll likely find me reading quite often. However, if given a choice between reading a book, and doing something else, I'll likely do something else (depending on what that 'something else' is of course). It's just part of my Major, so I've grown to like it. Especially since I'm a huge history nerd and Literature is a window to the past.

You are now imagining Roy being a manipulative magnificent prick with the power of Geass.
Ìt`s true. If Roy returns, he needs the same Japanese voice actor. He also won an award for his role of voicing Lelouch. And my keyboard randomly turned to french again. Like wtfÉé

Ah, I've heard of The Tempest before. Never read it though.
