It's interesting really.
Here's the reason, but it involves going all the way to smash 64.
Back in the day, I played Link until I relized how bad he sucked, so I switched to Ness who was quite good. However, I started winning WAY too much with ness. So much so that my sisters wouldn't play with me.
To assuage this problem, I picked up Jigglypuff as a third main. seeing how easy she was to kill, my sisters were appeased by this and Jigglypuff became my main.
Once Melee came out, I experimented with most of the cast and the only one of my three previous mains that I could still viably play was Jigglypuff The others just weren't good enough.
Unfortunately, Jigglypuff had a few really bad matchups in the forms of Samus, Link and Marth in particular so I picked up shiek as my secondary because he was easy to learn and could hold his own fairly well against Jigglypuff's main troubles.
I figured, as long as shiek was connected to Zelda, I should learn how to play her too, besides, I ALWAYS like the magic users and Zelda is Smash's sole magic user.
I enjoyed playing zelda and played with her once in a while, but Jigglypuff and shiek were really the only characters that I played that viably could play at a high competitive level.
Finally brawl comes out. I love sonic so much and can;t wait to play him, but I have to wait to unlock him, so I pick up my old mains Zelda/Shiek and Link and pick up PT while I wait for Jiggly and Sonic.
Once I unlock them, I find that I hate most of the changes made to Jigglypuff.
I play sonic for a good long while. I start working on developing strategies for him and I do fairly well with him. I actually was getting good enough with him to win more often than not. But whenever I do I fel like it's an uphill battle.
I look at all my characters: Zelda/Shiek, Link, Ness, Jigglypuff, Pokemon Trainer, Zero Suit Samus, Peach and Sonic and decide that Zelda is just the best.
I really do like ALL of them, but Zelda just happens to be the best. Once again, I play the game's magic user.

), who's job was, primarily, to annoy the enemy (turing off every skill they have has it's benefits), and make them rage, breaking the third barrirer and affecting the opposition directly. The same deal with Zelda. You can afford to toy around with enemies and flick them off when you're done playing with them. Breaking the third barrier? That's real power :]
