Claus stared blankly at the audience that was judging him. In the end, he received a Want score of 2.49. He had a likelihood of 1.54. Claus said nothing. He just walked off the stage and flew away with his robotic cyborg wings. All he did before leaving was hand Sqid five more nominations.



As he flew off, an engine was heard revving outside the stadium. A biker rode up a ramp and threw a flaming hoop into the stadium, only to blow up into a million pieces on impact...or so it seemed. The pieces reformed into the familiar retro face of Mach Rider. With his gatlin gun in hand and his bike at his side, he was ready to be judged.

I'd rather Takamaru or maybe Balloon Fighter be the new retro rep, but I wouldn't be upset if he did get in over them.

From what I understand, he might have been one of the retro characters Sakurai considered for Melee, but I'm not sure. If it is true, though, I see it improving his chances. Also, talking about him being obscure is pointless since the whole point of retro characters is to surprise people by picking characters you probably haven't heard of.

Mach Rider, I give him a likelihood of 2. Although I'm not familiar with his game at all, there are probably some better retro options than him out there.

When I saw the Melee trophy way back in the day, I thought Mach Rider was a boss. I still think he's pretty cool, and, as everyone else is saying, it seems like he was planned for Melee. I think we'll definitely see a new retro character again in SSB4, as we have in the last two. I think Mach Rider would be a good character to revive, although I'd rather see a series revival in Nazo no Murasamejo with Takamaru. There's nothing preventing both of them being part of the roster, though. It mostly depends on how many characters Sakurai puts in the roster.

I think he has a good chance of making it. Fulfills all four criteria and looks suited to be the next revived game. I give him a 3.5 in likelihood.

Sakurai has literally said nothing about Mach Rider other than he/she was his favorite character for "Smash 2" (prior to Melee being developed).
You're probably confusing Mach Rider with Excitebiker, who Sakurai stated would require ramps to be added to all stages.

Anyways, Mach Rider:
Want: 5
One of my most wanted characters, despite not actually playing the game. Probably because I want a badass biker hopefully with a chain like Ghost Rider or Nightwatcher.
Likelihood: 2.5
Again, Sakurai stated Mach as a favorite of his, and even redesigned him like he redesigned Pit. There was also the Mach Rider music in Melee, and Sakurai has said nothing negative about Mach Rider like he did Excitebiker, Bubbles, Balloon Fighter, Urban Champion, etc.
However, that's the extent of it. He/she does have a chance, but it really is a toss-up whether Mach will be added or not.

Aww, I missed a couple of characters I'd have liked to weigh in on. Oh well, they got about the scores I suspected they would.

He's a cool character who I wish would get another game, and I would definitely enjoy playing as him, but I'd rather other retros get in before him. I really wanted Unchained to be true.

He's got a pretty decent chance as the retro rep, as he is one of the only viable characters Sakurai hasn't dismissed, but I think that his main, and really only realistic competition, Takamaru, will get the edge over him in inclusion. Not only does he have more popularity in Japan, but his popularity in general is growing to noticeable amounts after his recent minor appearances and cameos. Plus Sakurai has spoke positively of Takamaru in the past as well. Really Mach Rider would be a fine candidate, but he really doesn't have as much going for him as Takamaru, even if he would be an addition just as good.

Of course there's a slim chance they both make it, but because of precedent and Sakurai's comments on the roster this time around, I'd say the chances of that were extremely unlikely.

Yeah, if Sakurai views Takamaru as already revived, then I would agree that Mach Rider has the best chance of the purely-retro characters. It depends on if he thinks reviving consists of making a couple recent minor appearances or receiving a new game in the actual character's series, like Little Mac did. Personally I would think the latter, but it's totally possible Sakurai would think the former, though really all we can do now is guess.

Whatever Sakurai's opinions might be, I'd still say that Takamaru has better chances, though Mach Rider's would definitely increase with his main competition in a different "category".

 

[Venus of the Desert Bloom]

Mach Rider is my most wanted Retro newcomer with Prince Sable followed with a close second. While I support Takamaru, I think his chances are fairly high so I decided to focus my energies I a different character. I consider Little Mac, Pit (and to a lesser extent Takamaru, as revived Retros thus no longer entirely Retro). I believe once they revieve a reboot of thier franchise ala Little Mac and Pit; they are a 100% revived character. I think Mach Rider has the chance to be revived within his franchise. It would be awesome to play a vehicular combat/action game in dystopian type setting with Mach Rider.

One of his biggest obsatcles is the aforementioned Takamaru. Takamaru`s poll ratings reflect that he is heavily requested and his likeliness scores show that he is expected to make an appearance. This could be attributed to his cameo in Captain Rainbow, Samurai Warriors, and Nintendoland. However, in SSBM, we technically had two Retro characters - Ice Climbers and Mr. Game and Watch. Yes, you could consider Mr. Game and Watch as a Classical character but he is still attributed to Nintendo`s past. In SSBB, we had Pit and ROB as the retro/classical characters. Who is to say that we could have two Retro/Classical characters this time around as well? It also helps in Mach`s favor that Sakurai seems to like him, considered him as a character to revive for SSBM, and re-designed his trophy much like Pits. So while his chances are slimmer than Takamaru`s, I would say he has the next best shot at being playable.

Another argument against him is apparent lack of a moveset. Many people seem to believe that he is unable to have a moveset since he primarily rides in his bike. Yet we have Captain Falcon, Fox, and Falco (who appeared in Smash before Adventures). Thus, Mach could easily have a unique move set without over relying on his bike. However, I am in favor of him primarily using his bike in combat. It would be interesting, unique, and extremely cool. I can imagine he would have a slow start up speed but one of the fastest top speeds but horrible stop-turning animations. One thing that sold me was a possible bunny hop attack or a Neutral A Jab that uses his front wheel to attack.

However, I wouldn`t be dissapointed to see Mach fight on foot. I admit it would seem too much like Captain Falcon hence why I would rather support a mix between the two. Unlike Wario`s Bike, Mach Rider can hop on or off his bike and doing so would allow him to access different moves, smashes, and specials. It would make him to very a flexible and capable fighter.

I believe Mach`s only competition, outside of limited character slots, comes from Takamaru as a Retro rep. But as history has shown us, Sakurai usually includes two characters that reps the Retro/Classical franchises. Additionally, Sakurai seems to like the character and, unlike Urban Champion, Excitebike, and Balloon Fighter, hasn`t come out to say to never expect him. On the flipside, however, he hasn`t said anything positive about the character thus leaving Sakurai`s true thougths about the character relatively unknown.

He's a retro character, which are inherently somewhat unlikely due to there being so many to choose from, but he's also among the better picks, right up there with Takamaru and Balloon Fighter. Apparently Sakurai mentioned him favorably forever ago as well...it'll be interesting to see whether Mach Rider will indeed ride again in SSB4.

Yes, Sakurai did say Mach Rider was his favorite character for SSB2 (Melee) but he did not put Mach Rider in Melee nor Brawl. That's why I say 1.5 because I don't see that changing anytime soon. Even Balloon Fighter nowadays seems to have a better chance of getting in SSB4 after Sakurai rejected him from SSB2 (Melee).

As the day came to a dramatic close, Mach Rider had his ultimatum. While he did his best to please fans, his retro status kept him from getting a really high score. His want was a 2.8 and a 2.38 in likelihood. Compared to other retros, he did decently. While Muddy and Takamaru received higher scores, he beat out Sukapon and Mr. Stevenson. Although, the latter isn't exactly a tough challenge. He gave SmashShadow five more nominations as a result. Silent as ever, Mach Rider rode off the stage and out the stadium for more epic alien fights.

"Well, I guess alien shooting on motorcycles would be more interesting than card games on motorcy..." the Guy with the Opossum started before he was slapped. By his opossum, no less...



Mario, who had just been in the spectator box, seeing as he was a lock, decided that he wanted in on some of the action. Not wanting to cause a stir, he went in his doctor garb. While in Brawl he was only be able to get in once, as opposed to twice in Melee, he felt that his persona of Doctor Mario would do rather well. Of course, he did face quite a bit of opposition.

My main in Melee, I'd love to have him back. That said, I really don't know if he should come back. If he came back as he is, he'd honestly feel redundant next to Mario, jsut like he was in Melee. If they changed him, he'd lose what I liked about him, which was hi playstyle.

Sakurai apparently considered him good enough to come back in Brawl at one point, so maybe he'll come back. Part of me says there's far too much stigmatization of clones in the SSB community to allow him back.

Of characters to come back he is the least wanted out of the 3 that can get in mainly due to people seeing him as just another Mario. Not only that but this time around he has to compete with all the other heavily requested Mario characters. With a limited roster he might not make it. Although, in his defense, he is a veteran.

People underestimate his chances. People think that "he's Mario" is a legitimate reason why he won't come back, but honestly, it's not like Sakurai gives a rat about that. He was planned for Brawl, and through research of files, I found that Dr. Mario would have been next in line after Mewtwo and Roy for inclusion.
You might think, "But Mewtwo and Roy had victory theme files while Dr. Mario didn't", however, there was a spot reserved for Dr. Mario inbetween Roy and Toon Link, the spot being only able to be given to another Melee veteran, and Dr. Mario is the only remaining Melee veteran that has data.
"But he's Mario" doesn't cut it, as there are people that feel Paper Mario should get it. "But Paper Mario can be different"; he can be unique, but he can also easily be another clone, and likewise, Dr. Mario can be unique or be a clone again as well. So anyone that supports Paper Mario and doesn't support Dr. Mario for those reasons are being hypocritical.

There is the off chance that Mario doesn't get any new (or in this case, back from being cut) characters, and the chance that Sakurai decides to keep on excluding Dr. Mario and Roy for being clones (as in, not add any similar characters). I don't know; I'm not Sakurai.
However, it stands to reason that Dr. Mario has an equal shot to return as he does to stay gone.

Well then, it doesn't seem you use the "he's Mario" reasoning for either.
Just that you welcome Dr. more than Paper. There is no problem in supporting one over the other, just that the following are hypocritical (which don't apply to you):

a. Saying "he's Mario" as a reason against one, but not the other.
b. Saying "Paper Mario would be unique and so he should get in" when Dr. Mario can be unique as well.
c. Saying "Dr. Mario is just a clone, and Paper Mario won't be one" when Paper Mario can be a clone as well.
