This thread is about long stories, I want to hear it
For you then:
I had a 64 and Smash for that when I was a lot younger, but that was a long time ago and is nothing but fond memories. I had played Melee maybe twice in my life prior to a couple months ago and Brawl a few of times a while ago, but hadn't owned a Nintendo system past the 64 and so never had the games or played them much.
A couple months ago my friends and I began frequently going to play Melee with a guy here at Uni who's got a Gamecube. After a little while, I decided I wanted to step my game up and began trying to learn about the game in whatever places I could find information online. I asked my brother if he knew of any good resources because he's generally a guru when it comes to fighting games, although Guilty Gear and Persona 4 Arena are more his jam, and he pointed me here.
I downloaded an emulator to start practicing on my own time and read my way through most of the general things, as well as everything I could find about not only my choice of character, but also the characters my four riends played. I started suggesting tips here or there to my friends about their respective characters in the hopes that they'd eventually start seeking information on their own and the whole group could take steps forward. One person took to it quickly, and the other three followed suit once they started losing every match to those of us who were doing our research.
Eventually, we couldn't play enough Melee just by visiting the Gamecube owner's room when he was free, so we began playing most every night on my computer with xbox controllers. Not the best way to play the game, but the best we could do. Wandering the forum here, I came across mention of Project M and looked into it. It sounded great and after watching hours and hours of matches, I wanted to try it, so I figured out how to run it through Dolphin and got it going.
The transition to Project M started as a nice change of pace, and we initially split time between it and Melee, but we all grew attached to the more balanced, more varied cast of Project M. We're still trying to learn, but we play almost every night and haven't stopped having a great time. I've looked into getting a Wii and some GC controllers for next year just so we can play it for real, but I'm not sure I can toss money around as a broke student.
So here I am, a new member of a community over a decade old. I'm not good enough to add much to the discussions that go on here, but I can assure you I read most all of them.
