Imagine if Nintendo did what the game designers do for Street Fighter: They work hard to make the game competitive and balanced which includes updating the game every so often. They care about the competitive scene.

Imagine all those people you hear at Brawl tourneys who complain that the game has so many flaws. That the game is just not "competitive" and sucks to play as a tournament game. That MK will always be the best character, wrecking everyone.

Now imagine Nintendo decides they want to fix this problem and update the game every 6-12 months. They want to try and balanced gameplay and fix common tournament problems that are unhealthy for a competitive scene. Would you accept it?

BBrawl, and their fine group of programmers, has made only necessary changes to create such a balance. Nothing drastic (like you see in other Brawl mods). Again, until you check out the site, www.balancedbrawl.net , and see exactly what they've done (or better yet spend a few hours playing it) you can't make claims that it "sucks."

Honestly, if Nintendo said they wanted Brawl to have a more balanced/competitive future, would you want it? Unfortunately Nintendo doesn't care about us competitive gamers in the slightest, but luckily we have people who do and can update the game to create balance.

Bounty List
How it works
I'm trying out something new to hopefully motivate lesser-known players (or OoS players) to beat big-name players. If you beat one of the players on the Bounty List in a singles tournament (winners or losers bracket) and your name is not on the Bounty List, then you receive the bounty prize for that player. Simple as that!

Brawl Bounty List
Dojo - $10
UltimateRazer - $10
Gnes - $10 (slain by Dphat)
LeeMartin - $5

Melee Bounty List
Darkrain - It doesn't matter, Randall won't let you win anyway. (slain by DoH)
Brawl Stages
Starter Stages
Battlefield
Final Destination
Smashville
Delfino Plaza
Yoshi’s Island [Brawl]
Lylat Cruise
Pokemon Stadium 1

Counterpick Stages
Castle Siege
Halberd
Frigate Orpheon
Brinstar
PictoChat
Rainbow Cruise
Pokemon Stadium 2
Norfair
Green Greens
WiFi Waiting Room [New]
General Rules
  • 3 Stock for Brawl. 4 Stock for Brawl Minus.
  • 8 minute timer.
  • Items are set to "Off" and "None"
  • Matches are best of 3. Winners/Losers/Grand Finals are best of 5.
  • Controller port disputes will be resolved by Rock-Paper-Scissors or higher number with G&W's SideB.
  • Brawl: First round stage will be determined by stage strike system. Melee: Random with one Stage Strike or use Brawl method.
  • No player may choose a stage they have already won on in that set unless agreed upon by both players.
  • In teams matches one team will get ports 1 and 4, while the other team gets ports 2 and 3.
  • Make sure you fix your controller and your tag before you start playing. If a match is to be restarted due to controller functions, it must be agreed upon by both parties.
  • Any action that can prevent the game from continuing (i.e., freezing, disappearing characters, game reset, etc.) will result in a forfeit of that match for the player that initiated the action.

MLG Rules In Effect
  • No pausing a game without the other player's permission.
  • No use of an action that freezes a game, or otherwise disrupts standard gameplay.
  • Any infinite move must end before the affected character reaches 300%.
  • Players may request a blind pick of characters for the game 1 of a match.
  • [Stage Striking] For game 1 of each match, the higher seeded player/team must strike three stages from the list of starter stages. The lower seeded player/team must then strike 4 stages from the list of starter stages. The higher seeded player/team must then choose the game 1 stage from the remaining starter stages.
  • [Time Limit] If the timer runs out, the winner of the game will be determined by the following criteria in this order: stock and percentage. If stock is used to determine a winner, the highest number will win. If percentage is used to determine a winner, the lowest number will win. If both stock and percentage are tied, sudden death won’t be used and a tiebreaker Round will be played instead. In a tiebreaker round, stock will be set to 1, the timer will be set to 4 Minutes, and the same stage and characters must be used.

Other Rules
  • MikeHaze rule: No yelling or making abrupt noises at your opponent. This applies to EVERYONE, players and spectators. Simply talking to the players (and Exodia moments) are exempt.
  • Chibo's Video-for-the-masses rule: You cannot refuse to be recorded if you pay money to enter an event.
  • No Coaching: Spectators may NOT coach/give advice to the players while they are playing a tournament game. In between games of a set is ok.

I've never been to a tourney, but i'd like to start with this one.

i'm one of those guys that can "beat all his friends" and I switched to balanced brawl about 8 months ago.

Would it be a good idea for me to attend this? I'd really like to go and test myself, but I live about 3 years away in Austin.

Going to a first smash tourney is always a great experience. Expect to learn a lot, meet a bunch of cool people, and experience a level of the game you haven't encountered before. Good times.

When the tourney is over, or as it starts dieing down, then sure I dont mind what you guys play. But until we finish with Singles/Doubles/Brawl Minus (if time) all TVs will be used for tournament. I'll try and rush you guys to finish matches so we can have more play time afterwards. Store closes around 9-10 i think

I'm definitely going to come, I have a crt and one spare bbrawl SD card i can give to whoever wants one.

I think my brother's going to come too. I hope we're on opposite ends of the brackets because that fight's gonna be nasty.

I got to play a ton of this earlier tonight with Zac, Tyson, Josh and Billay and it feels little to no different than normal Smash. I won't run around endorsing it, but it will definitely test your ability to adapt to the other player....

...and/or your ability to not run in to a smash attack like an idiot.

Turnout for doubles sucked; we only had 3 teams so we played round robin.

Turnout for singles was alright, we had about 15 people show up.

1 - Zac
2 - Infinity
3 - Denti

With MK nerfed I managed to take Zac to game 5 in winner's finals, then beat him in the 5th game in Grand Finals to go to second set. Then got 3-0'd by being a ******, lol :(

Zac should have the results and videos up soon, doubt it will be tonight.

That was really fun, but I really need to practice more in Austin before I go back to Plano.
