I just experienced something odd. I'm not sure what it was. A hallucination, psychic outreach, or just my eyes playing tricks on me. All I know is, it happened, and it scared me.

I was just sitting in my room, listening to music, drawing some concept art for an idea I've been wanting to develop. Suddenly, I got chills. I dropped my tablet pen, and saw a pitch-black silhouette of a person standing right next to me. As I turned my head, it vanished. My skin became clammy, goosebumps started appearing. I didn't feel safe in my own room. A threatening presence seemed to linger over me. I feel scared, alone, and vulnerable, and I have no idea what to do.

Has this ever happened to anyone else, or am I just insane?

Seems like a light version of a night terror, although you are awake.
Night terrors are where one is half awake, half asleep, and suddenly get a feeling similar to what you seemed to experience. Fear, vulnerability, et cetera. It is most likely your mind playing tricks on you.
Are you tired/stressed/laid back right now?

I slept from 5 AM until 2 PM today, and 1 AM to 1 PM the day before, so I doubt it's sleep deprivation.

I'm not tired in the slightest, right now. Relaxed, yes. Stressed, no.

A panic attack, or a paranoia episode.
Some doctor thing said:
Paranoia is a type of delusion, a firmly held but nevertheless unrealistic belief. Paranoia is a persecutory delusion that someone will harm you in some way, whether physically, mentally or emotionally.
Panic attack might be going too extreme, though. Random paranoia moment right there is more believable.

I kinda had a similiar event though it was from far away, not a close encounter, I was walking from a friend's house when I saw a silhouette in a open lot, I turned my head for a few second and it was gone and there was no possible way it could had gone with vanishing into thin air.

No one in my family history was prone to panic attacks or paranoid behavior. That's another thing I'm concerned about.

Usually with these kinds of events, I just get angry. How dare someone stalk me?! If they would even come close to me, I would probably not care what weapon they had concealed, I'd go for the kill and claim self-defense. This pretty much has killed off all my stalking-based fears... Oh and, I'm serious here.

They could also be random hallucinations perceived, or illusions made bythe difference of temperature close to the ground and above, not to mention the presence of a gas, or steam. It can also make the streets look like they have puddles wwhen they're actually dirt dry.

Any person can experience a panic attack or a paranoid episode at any time during their lives, it's not completely based on genetics. Maybe at that moment, your heart had a low heartbeat-rate, and your brain wasn't getting its oxygen fast enough. This can cause dysfunction in different areas of the brain, and it's well known between neurologists that the body has a self-defense mechanism to wake you up in case it's actually a "relaxed state"'s fault.

Me, whenever I'm in a relaxed state, I actually forget to breathe. My brain shocks me back to normal, I wake up immediately and continue breathing. This happens more than 10 times per night, and it's not sleep apnea.

Edit: Whoops, double post... I swear, I don't mean to double post whenever I do, I always write replies in Quick Reply's, then copy+paste onto the previous post... But I forget sometimes and just click "show signature" to display my sig and hit "reply".

I wasn't angry so it wasn't that. The air outside that day was pretty fresh so it couldn't be from heat temperature, the open lot where I saw the silhouette is one of those dirt lots that are being turned into buildings so I don't think gas or steam could had had an effect.

It may just be an isolated incident. If it was out of the corner of your eye, it could be that your mind just glitched on pattern recognition for a moment.

But if it keeps happening again, it may be a neurological or psychological condition that needs to be identified. It doesn't fit the description of paranoia, but some schizophrenics have described delusions similar to this (shadows of people crawling out of the furniture to get them).

But I wouldn't jump to conclusions right now. If it's just an isolated incident, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

EDIT: On second thought, if it disappeared when you looked at it, it probably isn't a mental disorder. Delusions don't go away just because you're looking directly at them. Maybe you should get your eyes checked, as cookiemonster suggested. But otherwise, if it doesn't happen again, you're probably fine.

In your case, it could be that you either had something in the back of your mind that was important but forgot what it was, or it could've been the feeling of vulnerability by walking around at night.

EDIT: Or what El Nino said. Pattern recognition failure, a simple error your eyes made because they saw the surroundings a different way than they were in the corner of your eye.

Have you checked your eyes lately? Sometimes people can get things called floaters, which are little things that float around in your eye, and sometimes, they can look like people.

Otherwise, your eyes were robably playing tricks on you.

Funny you got me to remember a some thing that happened.

Me and my friends were taking a shortcut through the grave yard, during the night. As we where almost to the other side, the street lights suddenly went out. We bolted straight forward out of there as fast as we could. It was like I was living a video game. The dark touches you and your dead. With that in mind I ran like crazy. Thing is, as soon as we got to the other side, all the lights came back on, at once. It was creepy and I don't think I'll be taking any walks through that grave yard any time soon.

Sucks I have to live near it.

Something also happened to me yesterday night...

I was walking to the nearest 24-hour all-purpose store near home at night, when a huge unicorn-pterodactyl-turtle appeared and demanded me to tie its shoes! I didn't see any shoes, so I told it I couldn't. Afterwards, he followed me everywhere and kept on pestering me to tie his shoes. Weird thing is, no one else could see him or hear him, it was like he was there to bother ME.

... And it still is! He's right next to me, asking me for food now.

Something like that happened to me before back in 2007, I believe. I was walking home late from work and from the side of my eye, I saw this shady figure coming at me. My reaction was to kick in that direction. Oddly enough there was nobody there. I ran home.

Reality is a funny thing... you might be interested in researching the subjective nature of reality. Looking at perception through the subjective lens, experiences like these are explained. This paradigm basically proposes that the mind and it's past experiences dictate material reality and perception, rather than the material model where matter concretely structures reality.

It's a lot to go into in a single post, but the rabbit hole goes eerily deep. Check it out.
