Well, that was an interesting Smashfest.
Justin, wow, what the hell was that? Did you, like, power train in the hours before the Smashfest? You improved considerably since last we played, which was what, two days ago? You also played it very smart, sticking with Olimar against my Lucas rather than going Metaknight. Great job! Next ToS or whatever, you have to sign up, even if you think you're 'not going to win'.
Jan, same with you. Your Ike has come a very long way. Suicides are still a bit of a problem but you've definitly gotten to a point where I have to be a lot more alert in a match. I'm glad you stuck with Brawl with a competitive mind-set. Now get your *** over here more often so we can play!
And to Randy and Cam, of course, thanks as always for hosting those bi-weeklies. I was worried for a bit that lack of attendance was going to kill it but I'm glad we still got to go forward with them. However, there are a few things that are on my mind since having Niko over for the week. Namely, how Ottawa's Brawl competitive scene is shaping up. Rather, how it's not...
There's no denying that OVERALL Toronto/Montreal/Niagra/Narnia Smash players are better than Ottawa ones. I've come to believe that a large contributing factor to their success is their higher-stakes tournaments, larger variety of players, and overall more competitive attitude towards the game. They're not playing for fun, they're playing to win (yay Sirlin!
).
I'm not good enough at Brawl. No doubt about it. I can't beat SAUS yet and thus I suck. Since I've chosen Brawl to be my 'competitive game' (at least until I get some PS2 arcade sticks again...) I'd really like to do what I can to improve (outside of changing characters). As well, I'd love to see Ottawa as a whole dominating at whatever the next tournament we go to may be. And so, with all that being said, I'd like to propose some potential changes to smashfests: first off, I think that a higher pot would be a beneficial change. $1 isn't heavy on the pockets, which is great, but it doesn't really make the pot all that lucritive either. $10 would probably be way too much so how does something like $5 sound? Would people be up for that? If it's a bit much, would switching to a tri-weekly balance things out? A bigger pot would attract more people (at least that's the hope). Dice and co., would you guys finally come out and play Brawl if the pot was bigger? Playing for $1 is starting to feel too... kiddy. I mean, this is Brawl we're talking about. It's supposed to be serious business!
Another change that I think would be beneficial competitively would be a change from players alternating to a more aggressive loser-out style. If Derek is owning the world, he shouldn't be rotating out. We should be observing the hell out of him and slowly learning to adapt. A loser-out method of player rotation strongly encourages winning above all things since the winner is rewarded (well, "rewarded" for those who don't like Brawl
) with continual plays. I remember when I was playing Rimi when the Kanata crew come to the smashfest when Brawl first came out. He would do loser out and would always go straight to Final Destination. My thoughts at the time were that he was terribly annoying since I wanted to play on the more 'entertaining' levels like Bridge of Elding and such. I found his play style wasn't risky enough and he wasn't a very fun person to play against. He also ***** the **** out of me. I was going in with the fun mentality whereas he was there to win. Which he did. If the problem with loser-out is that some people have to wait a while to play, that's remedied by having two, or even one stock matches. I can start bringing my Wii as well if more set-ups are needed.
I sucked at ToS, I sucked at the smashfests. I suck. But I want to change that. This rant could basically be a big john for my sucking but the changes at least seem to work for other groups so I'd like to see if they'd work here as well. Higher pot and loser-out. Some money matches perhaps?
On an irrelevant note, I'm thinking of dropping Brawl for this awesome new fighting game that's coming out... No, it's not Street Fighter IV. That game sucks now that Ryu has this terribly English voice:

No, no. I'm going to drop Brawl for this no doubt amazing game. A game so amazing that if it IS balanced it won't make any sense whatsoever:
