cam - im' in :) I"ll definitely be there sunday

and if you head to montreal even if it's for melee i'd head down with you... nothing says partying like montreal... schwartz isn't the same cold... and already picked at by JL

and yeah, if you guys ever need to come to ottawa I have lots of couches...

cam again - no one got back to me on venue hosting, think you could forward me the contact info on the church you have ToS at?
Their contact info is at: http://southminster.ncf.ca/contact.html

FYI the secretary who answers the phone is actually Garrett's mom :) Just mention that you know me, and that you're interested in setting up an event similar to the ones I ran, and you should be good. I suggest asking for the basement because it's bigger than the other rooms they lend out (and the same price), but it may not be available depending on what week you want to rent it for.

BTW, I started reading the Masao Kato Attacking/Killing book (forget the exact title) you lent me, but I'm feeling that it's over my head. The basic concepts look good, but in the examples I don't really feel like I'm understanding the moves he's making. Should I wait until I go up a couple of ranks before reading this one?

Anyone interested in Thurs. Smash at my place? I'm itching for some Brawl, and I can't make the bi-weekly this week :(

PS3 is awesome, how is Disgaea 3 Cam? I loved 1-2 (anything by Nippon Ichi)
I'm having people over on Thursday already, we were mainly going to play Melee but I would be up for a bit of Brawl as well. You are welcome to come by if you're willing to make the trip to Nepean :)

Disgaea 3 is pretty good, I'm actually still doing post-game stuff in it. After playing Disgaea 2, I didn't want to go back to playing 1, and I feel the same way about 3 compared to 2. The basics are pretty much the same as the other two, but they added a couple of new systems to make things interesting. I can show you next time you're over if you want to see it, just let me know.

I don't know how hardcore you were into the post-game stuff (do you know what max stored levels, perfect level 200 equipment, rarity bonus, etc. mean?), but they made it a lot less painful to get powerful characters/equipment post-game. I can get from level 1 to level 9999 in 3 battles in this game...as compared to the first two which were much more painful.

Making perfect equipment takes a lot less time, and you can clone (!) items, meaning once you make one perfect weapon/armor, you can just dupe the crap out of it instead of having to perfectly level another item again. Also, they made post-game even crazier than in D2 (LoC Baal has 400 million HP and stats in the 40 millions...random LoC Item World enemies can get 60-100 million HP and stats in the 10-20 million range) so there are actually enemies worth fighting with all the crazy equipment/characters.

Sorry if you weren't seriously into it, in which case the previous paragraph was just gibberish to you :)

Note: I take melee just as serious as before if not more so.
That's good to know...the rest of us used to practice and read up on matchups/techniques/etc but we don't do any of that anymore :(

lol but u guys dont host any big tournaments =P
I think ToS5 was comparable to the size of the GTA tournaments; we had about 60 people in singles. I'm pretty sure that future big tournaments could pull in that amount pretty easily.

is that garrett hanna's mother?

i'm not surprised it's a little intense, but it's good to see those sometimes... since you think you should have some easier ones i'll go through them and try to find an appropriate next book, and i'll give 'em to you on friday

Yes, it is.

As for the book; I like the principles he's trying to teach, I just think I'm missing something when it comes time for the examples. I don't really understand how he's making some of the decisions he's making, even though I thought I understood the principle when I first read it. I'll keep going and see what happens once I reach the part where he asks you to answer questions and see how it goes :)

I kind of felt that way about the opening theory book too, but after reading it I think I understand the opening better. I used to just play 4-4 points because I didn't know any better, but I understand now how you have to change things up based on what your opponent does in the opening, and how having a good opening is so essential for the rest of the game. I'm looking back at some old games that I started on DGS before I read it, and in some of them I'm in trouble because my opening sucked.

I'm hoping the same kind of thing will happen with this book, where although I may not understand 100% of it, the bits I do understand will still help me. Later, I can go back and read it after understanding and applying some of the principles from it, and maybe it will help me understand the rest.

James im really interested in some Thursday smash some of your mom's awesome cooking :p.
Nice! Haha, although my Mom is away in Banff Alberta at the moment, so we won't get anything awesome and home-made :( I'll see if there's some more interest before I confirm.

I'm not sure if I'll come by Thurs. perhaps if there is not enough interest for a bit o' Brawl at my place:)

Good to hear about Disgaea 3, I was fairly hardcore into the endgame stuff. I know about stored lvls and perfect equips and all. I've found in the past that I've never actually fully achieved the 'perfect' character though, generally another game will draw me away, then I find it hard to come back.

I'll definitely have to pick it up though. Did you hear that supposedly Nippon Ichi has said that their next game will take more advantage of next-gen power? Disgaea with HD-sprites zomg! :D

I would love to...but I have an exam that very day. Maybe I can show up afterwards though, so...yes? I'll get back to you on that later.
Cool, you could always come later Saturday and game till Sunday noon? :chuckle: I'm good for the weekend. Just tell your mother you're off to a study group, unless Saturday's exam is your last one then your free!

Ben, are you looking into a one-time deal or something that can be used with some frequency? Specifically, should we all be looking for a potential monthly/bi-monthly venue or a bigger one for a once-every-couple-of-months-ToS-size-tournament?

i think we need to find a place that is inbetween... for the first one I know that montreal and T. are both interested... and judging from how frequently ally wins, I'm sure he'd make the trip to take our money every couple months lol... and with him in, he just brings the serious competition with him (looking at michigan)

so for the first one, the ToS venue will work fine... but I'd really rather get a place that is more accessible... i biked there for ToS but in this weather that's impossible and trying to bus down bank st. really sucks... not to mention getting tv's there

one thing that LBT did was have a video splitter for one of the stations, which was then hooked up to a projector so that everyone could watch those matches... I have all the necessary stuff for that myself (don't have to rent like they did) and I am also looking into how much more equip. I would need to record _every_ match in the tournament... i'm thinking <$100 bucks since I already have a lot of stuff and I know I can pay a couple friends in beer for their help in running the tech side of things during the tournament

anyways... I would say probably around 30-40 people per tournament? It probably won't bring in too much but if everyone (minus a couple) from ottawa shows that's 25 right there...

Yay, you're the first person I know IRL that actually knows about hardcore stuff for N1 games :) Warning: Incoming wall of text!

Yeah, I'm kind of the same way for Nippon Ichi games. I need to have motivation to level up all those characters/equipments...I can't level just for levellings sake or I get bored. I stopped playing D1 shortly after beating Prinny Baal, and same thing with D2 after beating LoC Baal with the 3x Prinny Baal boost.

My D1 file isn't that impressive, but in D2 I made two 'perfect' characters: a Battle Master and Space Knight with max stored levels. The Battle Master has a perfect level 200 Yo****suna, and the Space Knight has a perfect level 200 Omniscient Rod plus perfect level 200 Makai Wars (with focus on INT of course). My Battle Master has ATK and DEF both around 10 million (the armor I gave him isn't perfect, but I think I still got it up to level 100 and made sure to get the DEF bills passed early), and the Space Knight has about 10 million INT (plus maxed Magic Knight lovers, so +45% damage to all her spells).

I found with those characters/equipments I could absolutely destroy LoC Baal even with the x3 stat boost. My Space Knight can kill him in 2-3 hits, and my Battle Master takes longer but has better defense (only takes 100-200k damage from Baal's attacks so I can outlast him), so beating him was no problem. After beating him there wasn't much else to do except more grinding, so I didn't bother making more perfect equipment or characters and started playing other games.

For D3 I'm still on my way; I don't have any perfect characters yet, but I've made a perfect level 200 Radiance (the best bow) and duplicated it 4 or 5 times, so I have a few level 9999 archers with 3-6 million ATK/HIT. That was enough to beat regular Baal, but it will be a while before I can take LoC Baal on :) For now, I'm working on getting more rank 40 equipment, specifically I'd like whatever the best Glove is so that it's easier to grind HoO4 (the best D3 levelling spot, a 3x3 block of Barbarians on a +100% EXP panel).

You might be happy to know that Statisticians are back in D3, and you can stack as many of them as you want. If you load up all of your equipment slots with max Statisticians, you get 9600x the experience boost, and there are ways to raise the EXP rate even more (I would get into it but this post is long enough...).

Out of curiousity, did you play any other N1 games aside from the Disgaea series? I did pretty much everything in Phantom Brave, La Pucelle, Makai Kingdom, and Soul Nomad as well. I really enjoyed Soul Nomad; it was good to see that N1 can do a more serious and involved plot. It was also nice to see them get away from the Disgaea-y stuff for a change (seeing Laharl, Etna, and Flonne every single game was getting a bit repetitive).

Anyways, sorry for the rant :)

Recording every single tournament match would be insane; aside from the ridiculous amount of VCRs (or DVD writers/whatever) required to do that, it would take an obnoxious amount of time to upload all of those videos somewhere for people to watch. I don't want to be negative, but you might want to think twice before doing something like that :)

Ah yeah, that's a good point. And Fogel, I gotta agree that it would be insane for somebody to expect EVERY tournament game to be recorded, but if someone's crazy enough to do it, I don't think anyone's going to try and stop them.

Replay hack would be possible, we'd just need to make sure we knew when people were leaving with their setups so we could grab all the files on it so far. Is there a way around the new wii update yet?

And don't forget, once I'm in Niagara I'm going to be dragging up at least a carload of GTANers every time. So count on some competition from that, which may bring some more people out.

If we advertise in the universities / colleges I'm sure we'd grab some new players, too.

Venues, perhaps?:

Not the main theatre, that's $400 (but a wicked theatre) but perhaps one of the other rooms? Nepean room seems the largest. . . but even then, perhaps too small for a tourney. One of the rooms without dimensions listed might be sizable enough.

http://www.jccottawa.com/pages/facilityrentals.html
Jewish community centre. Not sure exactly on the prices or the dimensions of the room. I'm *distantly* Jewish, and so is Riley. (closer than me) so perhaps?

http://www.greenboro.net/winter09/facilityrentalw09.pdf
Not enough info to be sure. Thought I'd pop it in anyway, might be worth a call.

Haha, of course a bigger tournament means a bigger fee. Also means crazier smack talking, I'd imagine.

Oh, and Mike, could you give me a shout tonight?

Eventually the goal will be to host bi-monthlies, they wont be OiN2 big but should bring about a decent amount of competition as Ben has mentioned.

Wow that's pretty crazy Cam, I'd definitely love to see your Disgaea 3 stuff. Like I said, I never reached that pinnacle in any of the N.I. games, I'm like mid-tier to your high-tier lools.

I've played quite a few N.I. games, Disgaea 1-2, Makai Kingdom, Phantom Brave. Haven't played Soul Nomad, though your description sounds awesome.

I think I'm going to call off thursday Smash at my place, cuz looking around my house, it is messy as hell, and between tonight and tommorrow mornings work, I won't have time to clean.

Ben! Yay, sounds like wheels of the Ottawa tourney's are turning. Let me know if there is anything I can help with, I am too pumped for this.

Harold: After completing MGS4, I can relate to your feelings from months ago, when you watched the cutscenes. If you're a big fan of the series, then this game is literally like THE GAME OF THE UNIVERSE, it's so good it's almost impossible to explain. If you're just a casual though, I could see it being just average.

The idea of bi-monthlies actually sounds pretty cool. I mean, if it can get organized down pat, then I can see it as being nothing but a positive. Like I said, assuming it all gets sorted out of course.

the games i hate more than anything else in the world are nippon icchi games. Just massive, massive grind. it rewards repetition with big numbers, so unfulfilling to me.

Oh god, Mike. That's funny on multiple levels XD

The other level being that somebody on IRC used to spam links about his Jewish girlfriend.

But still, hilarious.

Won't girls distract us, even if it's just a hint of a scent floating into the room? :p

infzy: I already made fanboy-ish comments on YouTube, but I watched both of your DI/momentum cancelling vids and I must say they're really good. I did not know about momentum cancelling at all, but I did some experiments and I've definitely found situations where just using DI won't save you, but DI plus momentum cancelling will.

The main one I tried was DK vs. Marth on Battlefield (in practice mode). DK is on the main level, and Marth is on a platform just above him. If Marth's at 80%, and DK upsmashes him, Marth will die even with good DI. However, if Marth momentum cancels, he can live.

When I was tryng this, I noticed that I would only live if I faired while facing left. Other aerials or facing other ways didn't seem to work. Am I doing something wrong, or does it actually matter which aerial you use?

Soul Nomad is actually quite different from the other NI games. All of the other ones are SRPGs with a not-quite-serious plot. Although they all have slight differences (enough to be worth playing), to me they all have the same feel. Soul Nomad's plot is more serious and much more involved than any other NIS games. The gameplay is also quite different; it's closer to Ogre Battle/Ogre Battle 64, if you've ever played any of those.

One of the reasons I liked it is because it was different from N1's normal stuff. I'm happy to see that they were able to make a game with a good, serious plot and new character/battle systems, and not have to rely on tweaking the Disgaea 1 formula yet again (I do love all the other games, but essentially they're all tweaks/changes to D1).

I would really recommend trying it out if you haven't already, it's under the radar compared to other N1 games but is definitely worth a try.

The main game I disagree, but post-game stuff, yes, pretty much. Part of me likes getting the big numbers so that I can kill enemies that have bigger numbers though :) Also, Disgaea 3 made grinding a lot less tedious than the other two, IMO. You should try Soul Nomad too!

Training mode is weird, testing should be done in a real match. Didnt know about the stale move negation though.

Randy, next week we should try to finish the next Indiana Jones movie.
