God, I hate so $%/&%" bad this &$%/! &%/"!° monkey
Myran (Olimar) vs MVD (Diddy Kong)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gZ5GpXsg7s

I started playing against one of the best players around here ('cause he asked me to train him to fight against Olimar) and he is going to Evo.
The skill level of these players using Diddy is just insane... When I play with him, 20 wins for him and barely (sometimes even I can't get 1) 1 for me.
I really really don't know how we can defeat Diddy... :(

Ugh this was a pretty bad set on my part. Plus MVD was just angry, and I wasn't prepared for that kinda of play.

No it's fine to post videos and all that. Just saying that wasn't wanna of my better sets. Also MVD is probably the most threatening Diddy in Florida currently.

I had a funny for glory match yesterday against a Ganondorf. The interesting part is his second stock.

Btw: I would like to share some of my matches in some German online tourneys to get some advice. Will post them later this day.
edit: Ok here are the links.
The commentary is german, but I guess that's not important for understanding the match.

Around 33:00 http://www.twitch.tv/smashcoinz/c/6320118
Alph(Konline) vs Yoshi(Katsumi) [for the 2nd match I tried with Metaknight, so it isn't really important for the Olimar video thread]

Around 07:30:00 http://www.twitch.tv/smashcoinz/c/6137878
Little Mac(Zluchs) vs Alph (Konline) [it's the 3rd match of the set]

Around 04:20:00
http://www.twitch.tv/cyfersquadletsplay/c/6166667
Diddy(MilesMcCloud) vs Alph (Konline) [1st match of the set; I tried with Fox afterwards]

Shiek&Jigglypuff(Light) vs Alph (Konline)

I saw this and said "the guy took the time to do this post, I will try to give him some advices" but you play a lot better than me jajaja.
I would recommend you to see the Knowledge thread if you want more info.
Keep the good work, you have good skills :).

I'm wondering why are you using aerials often vs. Zinoto. Your aerials just clank with his, and if you weren't spacing enough from Villager to not get hit by his aerials most of the time, you would lose trades because of the hitbox still being present.

A few other notes from the first three videos:
- You need to be careful when attacking out of UpB around the ledge, because you don't give yourself enough height to grab the ledge when trasitioning into the helpless state.
- Try to use whites mostly for side B and maybe for the extra grab range. I know there were situations where the opponent was right on your face, but I saw you throwing out white fairs which won't give as much as an impact than other colors will.

Your punishing and pressuring skills are good, though. I was wondering how I can improve in that aspect myself.

Soulimar vs SirPulse, im the mario. would love a critique, ive been told mario destroys olimar. im not seein it.

Mario doesn't destroy Olimar, but I would say he has tools to make the MU in his favor.

Haven't watched the vid yet, but some things to keep in mind are caping stuff to keep him scared, Nair/Dair more, and abuse invincible usmash.

I'd say to make use of Cape a lot more up close and when approaching. It makes using smash attacks more risky for Olimar and pressures him up close, and the low endlag and large hitbox means it's a bit difficult to punish greatly. The reflected Fsmash in game 4 evened up the percentages on last stock; that's how dangerous the Cape is for the Olimar player.

Don't stick too long on ledges, like in game 1. Mario is one of the few characters that can be grabbed from the ledge from Olimar because his big head sticks out from it and the Pikmin's "grabbox" is along the ground.

Otherwise, I don't see much that I could give advice. Your edgeguarding is solid, and you kept it really close throughout the matches aside from maybe game 5.

here's a single match I played against a Mario before I went Sonic for the rest of the set, lol
You know, I had the same issue when I started to play against the Mario of a friend of mine.

He has been playing since Brawl and has so much experience than I. At first you may believe, in that match or any other against Mario, that their level is so over you. I'm sure isn't the thing.

The thing is that they play a very aggressive Mario, which tends to repeat some move over time.
The key is to take this aggressiveness on your favor. That is, wait for him to get close and approach accordingly.
They will be forced to change his habit and you will have some pivot Smash/Grab for free.

Another thing to do is to roll to forward. Imo you will need to have at least 2 pikmin all the time, because can punish with Dsmash, so try to avoid using Side B too much.

I just played against Nairo's assorted characters randomly through For Glory on his stream. He even gave me a "Good Player" note after, and I felt validated. Will definitely post the VOD once it goes up on Twitch! Mostly got my ass kicked, but I took a few games when he got too aggressive.

Here are my videos from playing Nairo on his For Glory stream. Nairo got second at Sandstorm to ZeRo, and this is my first time playing against a pro of his level.

Please give advice. Especially for the Dark Pit and ZSS matches! I don't expect anyone to watch all of these, but ANY advice is VERY appreciated!

I think these will be a fun watch for all Olimar mains though. I'm just an average online warrior going up against a pro. And I know I roll too much. But I'm playing For Glory. :p

@ Myran Myran @ Angbad Angbad @ koken koken (and everyone else)

VODS Below:

vs Yoshi

http://www.twitch.tv/nairomk/v/4587453?t=163m47s

Winner: Me!

Fun Notes:

- Pivot f-smashes are my savior in this match up.

- Someone in chat comments, “YOU GETTING WORKED BY THIS HOMELESS OLIMAR”

vs Falcon

http://www.twitch.tv/nairomk/v/4587453?t=167m20s

Winner: Nairo :(

Fun Notes:

- Nairo uses side-B into a red pikmin, and the lingering effect gives me a free up-smash with Purple punish.

- I almost spike Nairo for the win, but he up-Bs into me and connects the hit to give him another recovery.

- I almost die with a major fail when recovering with 3 pikmin, but Nairo kills some to save me. Phew.

- I got waaaaay too thirsty for d-tilt combos against Falcon. Embarrassing.

- Nairo side-B’s into a pikmin again, the hitbox lingers, but this time I roll into it like an idiot and lose the match. I was expecting to roll behind him, but completely misjudged the situation.

vs Ganon

http://www.twitch.tv/nairomk/v/4587453?t=170m25s

Winner: Me!

Fun Notes:

- I had a grab at 140% with Blue, but I chickened out of the up throw because I didn’t know if it would kill and I didn’t want to stale it. It almost cost me the match, but I got a second grab and used up-throw.

- A couple people in chat comment incredulously when I change my tag to “Good Games” because they think I’m leaving after being up 2-1.

vs Little Mac

http://www.twitch.tv/nairomk/v/4587453?t=174m56s

Winner: Me!

Fun Notes:

- Nairo comments that he can’t win because we’re playing on the Garden of Hope stage.

- Nairo SD’s basically twice. We take those. Especially against Mac.

vs Little Mac – Round Two!

http://www.twitch.tv/nairomk/v/4587453?t=177m05s

Winner: Me!

Fun Notes:

- I do an awful get-up roll, and Nairo calls me out on it on stream.

- Mac gets KO punch online, and I just sit there staring at him. Nairo calls me out again for waiting to hit him with the purple. He’s reading me like a book.

- Unlike the previous game, this is a legit win. I throw a Purple at the end that forces him to either side-B and lose his recovery or air dodge and end up too deep to recover.

- I get some props from the chat.

vs Little Mac – Round Three!

http://www.twitch.tv/nairomk/v/4587453?t=180m23s

Winner: Nairo :(

Fun Notes:

- Nairo starts ledge trumping, and I start panicking. I lost my recovery skills after that.

- I almost get two-stocked, but land a Purple bair out of up-B. JV2 instead.

vs Zelda

http://www.twitch.tv/nairomk/v/4587453?t=183m11s

Winner: Nairo :(

Fun Notes:

- I grab Nairo with a Blue at 125%, and he mashes out after two pummels. Sigh.

- I do a horribly predictable and slow up-B with 3 pikmin, and I lose my first stock to an fsmash at 89%. Probably cost me the match.

- He does an fsmash, which should give me enough time for a running grab, but the pikmin isn’t by my side yet. I wait for it, which is dumb. By the time it’s with me, he’s recovered from lag. I run and grab, he spot dodges, and gets the KO. I secretly blame the pikmin AI.

vs Dark Pit

http://www.twitch.tv/nairomk/v/4587453?t=186m59s

Winner: Nairo :(

Fun Notes:

- This is one of my worst match ups. Ugh. Advice please?

- I have serious problems landing on the stage. Pit’s dash grab covers so much range. And his attacks outrange everything also. Please halp.

- I panic when throwing out smashes because of side-b AND a normal reflector.

- He reads my obvious air dodge because I don’t know what else to do against the giant up-smash hitbox, except to use my double jump and let him reposition to attack again.

vs Zero Suit Samus (Nairo’s main)

http://www.twitch.tv/nairomk/v/4587453?t=188m54s

Winner: Nairo :(

Fun Notes:

- Another match where I cannot get back to the ground safely.

- I cannot believe ZSS’s grab yanks Olimar out of the air so well.

- I’m a bit lost at what to do when Nairo is in the air while I’m on the ground. All I want are grabs. If I jump to attack, I’ll lose the trades. If I approach and try to fsmash, he can nair or use down-B to evade/attack.

- Nairo bairs me twice, and I think I lose to bad DI on my part. I wasn’t expecting the second one at all.

- I try to change my tag after the match in the following waiting period to “IMONSTREAM!” but it comes out “IMONSTREA!” due to character limits.

vs Zero Suit Samus – Round Two!

http://www.twitch.tv/nairomk/v/4587453?t=191m45s

Winner: Nairo :(

- I get two-stocked, yet I feel I played respectably. Nairo played my second stock VERY well.

- We get screwed a bit by the camera at a certain point. Nairo comments on it. I change my tag after to “LOLCAMERA”.

- Nairo types in “Good Player” after. I feel warm and fuzzy.

vs Donkey Kong

http://www.twitch.tv/nairomk/v/4587453?t=195m17s

Winner: Me!

Fun Notes:

- This match shouldn’t have happened. Nairo said he was leaving, but the clock ticked down and started a new match.

- I had changed my tag to "GG!", which DOESN’T HAVE MY CONTROLLER SETTINGS. Shield and grab are switched. I assume I will lose horribly, but I luck out with the match-up advantage.

- I get some good nair -> up tilt combos on DK’s big hurtbox.

Went to my first tournament in about a month. Want some of you guys to watch this and tell me what I did wrong.

http://www.twitch.tv/fadgames/b/655865239

2:40 me vs a diddy

3:34:45 me vs a diddy. Want some advice on game 1

***************3:56:30 me vs ZERO Felt like I did well. He just bodied me on the ledge. Need some major help here. Felt like I was winning in most other aspects of the game.

4:56:20 me vs Captain Falcon not much to say here.

***************5:04:00 me vs XZAX

Hadn't played in awhile. Kept misinputting pivot grab and getting dash grabs. Really bad in the xzax set. Need to work on getting back on stage. Weakest part of my play for sure. Good games though I'd really appreciate it if some of you guys checked them out. Especially Zero and Xzax

Hey I watched the zss games. You really do roll a lot haha which isn't necessarily a bad thing online, but in person rolling needs to be very precise. I have trouble commenting on wifi games because I know how much delay there is. There were just a few times where you didn't punish unsafe things nairo did or missed some guaranteed follow ups. Other than I personally think that you should use side b more and really focus on having the right colors for the right situation. There was a lot of good play in there though.

Mario doesn't destroy Olimar, but I would say he has tools to make the MU in his favor.

Haven't watched the vid yet, but some things to keep in mind are caping stuff to keep him scared, Nair/Dair more, and abuse invincible usmash.
Mario definitely beats olimar. It's not a beat down but something like 6-4

Like I said before Mario has the tools to make Olimar lose, but it isn't super bad or anything. Actually I've been thinking lately that white pivot grabs destroy Mario. How is he supposed to get past that kind of range?

Thanks a lot for including me ^^, even when I'm not a recognized top player, I will do my best to help you.

Same thing as @ Angbad Angbad said (I have the same problem too), be carefull of rolling a lot. If you play For Glory often, you tend to get this issue into your game and then end to repeat it at offline, which is totally a different stuff.
I'm very aware of the delay too, I have lost some games because of that so one gets used to and sometimes can't fix that offline, just be carefull ^^.

So let's go:

Vs Yoshi
Try to use more your Side B. Good game overall, but keep and eye on the Grab, kind of miss the grabs here. Nice kill with the Uair.
Something I do when my enemy try to recovery is to Side B his way to the platform. If you latch a Pikmin on him, it almost a 6% guaranteed without ANY effort.
Vs C. Falcon
Not an easy MU. Depending on the type of C. Falcon, try to abuse your grab range. Also try to trust more on your follow up / combos (Dthrow + Fair).
Very good timing and precision on the Usmash kill.
Nice work avoiding Dairs and Bairs , but your roll killed you on this :(. Careful about rolling too much (I do it too, but that's isn't good)
Vs Ganon
Remember to Fast Fall with Nair. It's more secure than your actual way of landing on the stage.
I have to scold you by not punishing Down B Ganondorf endless ending lag. You have plenty of options to punish that, beside of the Side B you used it there.
Again, trust in your combos - follow up.
The behave of Ganondorf is something that repeat with more players against us, they start to short hop constantly. You can warning them by Usmash (needs to be very precise) or Fair / Uair that actions, remember my words :).
Good Uthrow kill but remember the % needed to succed that, I'm not sure but on certain time you had 2 blues and tried to grab with a 70-80% of Ganondorf's Damage.

Vs Little Mac #1 and #2
You have to be very sure in this match if you want to roll, because little mac is the best on this (correct me if I'm wrong).
There is not too much to say about, except of the 2 SD.
Vs Little Mac #3
Didn't see Side B, except for Purples. The mistake here was to keep yourself close to him and to use your recovery high and long.
Vs Zelda
The best way to punish their Side B when you have space, is to run towards and do anything else. Could be a basic combo or an Usmash, but shielding isn't the best option when you have distance to get close.
Same thing here about recovering, too high and too long. Also, try to throw 1 or 2 pikmin before you use it and never forget to fast fall to the platform.
Vs Dark Pit
This MU is a mix of things. First... I consider Pits floating character and very dangerous reflector. The typical gameplay of them is to Dash attack/grab and wait for your landing. They keep pressing you when recovering too, so it's a little bit of mental demanding.
The advice here is to pivot more often and when you can, Side B.
If you can notice, he short hop a lot in order to avoid the Smash and Grab. Try to use more often the Nair and fast fall (not together necessarily).
Big big problem here was trying to landing above him, and almost all the time he was waiting your with a Usmash.
Remember you have Up B, seeing this will might help you by using the "holding your landing" trap / set-up.
Vs ZSS #1
Good beginning with Side B, but bad behave on waiting for him to get close doing nothing. You could approach and punish his landing with a Grab, because he is more focused on taking the Pikmin off.
Remember, you will need to fast fall all the time. We aren't comfortable on being on the air.
Nairo once used his Up B and you didn't punish that hopeless landing, a good way (if you aren't sure where is going to land) is to position yourself close and then Dsmash. I saw the second Up B being punished by a grab, that's good too.
Try to mix up your moves more, it is very predictable about your constant Fsmash.
Vs ZSS #2
After a get up from the left ledge, Nairo pivo grab and you keep running away from him to the right. These details you have to take advantage of by reacting as soon as possible, because their are free damage without risk. If you see, that decision cost you 2 or 3 hits from him sending you away from the platform and giving him the control of the stage, waiting for you recovery.
Again Fast Fall every time you can. A very rough match tough, because IMO Nairo has magnificent control of ZSS.
Vs DK
You used Nair Landing and then Utilt, good. It's a safer way to land and it worked 2 times :D. After the 2nd stock you used Side B often, good too.
As an overall, good.
Things to work on:
  • Fast fall.
  • Land safer.
  • More Side B.
If something I posted is totally wrong, please (anyone) correct me.
I hope it help ^^.

I'm not sure if a beast god, quite good though. The Olimar player has really, really good skills, no doubt on that. In fact, I learned a lot on seeing him.
But Sonic is kind of... I don't know... sloppy? Slow? I don't know the word.
As I can see, the Sonic player tends to wait for Olimar, instead of put pressure on him.

When Sonic is edge guarding, he let Olimar drop the ledge, Olimar attack him and when is hanging again he doesn't do anything.
Actually, Olimar Fair him twice, dropping the ledge twice too, but Sonic just shield both.

Now if someone tells me that Sonic seems overwhelmed by the Pikmin or doesn't know the MU, totally agree. The 3rd match seems like Sonic was understanding what to do.

Nevertheless the match is great.

Thanks. I agree about using Side-B more. I try to be conservative with it because lag + pikmin AI can often leave you without pikmin available for smashes. When I feel like I'm against a good aggressive player, I'm more cautious than I have to be for sure. So I probably keep too many pikmin at my side when I could be forcing approaches better by using them as projectiles.

I'll check out your videos soon too!

This is awesome! Thanks so much for the time and advice.

I definitely have to fast fall more. Completely agree. I like your link also for mix-ups. I should use Up B, especially against Pit, to delay my landings before falling. I have such a hard time with that match, so that's great advice. As for him short hopping, I'll try nair more. I'm terrified to contest him in the air because of the range of his blades, so I end up just confused as to what I should be doing. Landing is one of my weakest aspects of play.

I'm actually going to rewatch the videos with these in mind. I'm going to especially see where I can optimize my followups that you're talking about. Thanks again.

For the Diddy match at 3:34:45, it looked like you'd retreat and then pivot, expecting your opponent to be there, but he wouldn't be there a couple times. You'd throw out a pivot grab that would obviously miss just to cover an option. It looked like you could've used pivot toss a few times as an alternate pivot option that would've at least threatened with something.

For the second stock of that match, he did a roll in, and you missed a clear dsmash punish, but it happens to the best of us. The real problem in the second stock was that you got trapped right next to him several times. It created awkward situations, and you even got hit by an fsmash in its rear hitbox. I don't really have a concrete solution other than saying your spacing in the second stock just needed to adjust to his a bit better to eliminate these situations.

I watched the ZeRo match twice, but honestly I have no good comments. I have no idea what to do against a Sheik of ZeRo's ability! You got a really nice read with a purple and also you spiked him (even though he recovered). So good stuff there.

For Xzax's Diddy, I believe that he was getting roll and grab happy, and you could've punished here a few times. I'm a big proponent of the double fsmash, and I really feel like it could've worked well here. He'd often shield and then run in for the grab, and you were at the right range to pull off a second fsmash that would smack him in the face.

For the rolling, you can also try fsmash -> dsmash quickly in succession if you have all three pikmin. You were using pikmin toss here a lot, so maybe you didn't feel like you could rely on dsmash. I'd just say that double fsmash looked like it could've paid dividends here.

Overall, really strong matches! Fun games.

It seems to me that it is ok overall, but you made some mistakes about retreating when doing the basic combo and missed 2 grabs because using purples. Also the get up options were too comfortable for Diddy, try to mix them up more.
By the way, good pivot grab with White, awesome. I think @ Myran Myran talked about this on Twitter some days ago, I haven't recognized how broken the range was till I saw it now.
2nd Game was solid, no comment about that.
***************3:56:30 me vs ZERO Felt like I did well. He just bodied me on the ledge. Need some major help here. Felt like I was winning in most other aspects of the game.
I have almost none of experience against Sheik, but I felt that you needed more pivot grab instead of stationary grab. Also I think that keeping the mobility was something that might have worked on.
The second match you tried to do a Fsmash without having Pikmin after getting up the ledge at the left.
You started to pivot grab a lot and worked very good, in fact you accomplished a Dthrow + Uair + Uair.
I do something that I haven't saw on any other Olimar player and I recommend to do against Sheik: short hop + dodge immediatily + F/B air. It work well because Sheiks do Fair and they get close to you, so if you SH Dodge, the fair doesn't connect and you can Bair successfully.
Can't remember well but maybe more Side B? I can't tell for sure if you did it, can't remember.
***************5:04:00 me vs XZAX
At first match, why using Bthrow at low % when you could have go for the combo? I think maybe the factor who play against you here was: you chasing him to build damage instead of using his mistakes to punishing him.
Good edge guard at the left around 05:08:30 on 2nd match, a lot of mistakes by your side and a lot of read on his side... kind of 50-50.
Maybe you weren't confident enough and in somehow he used that.
I'm agree with @ F Freezie KO about the Fsmash x 2, could have save some situation too.
Not too much to say about in general, I think those were good fights anyway.

Versus xzax he really made me realize how good rolling is in this game. I read so many of his rolls and was trying to punish but the window is incredibly small so I started to get worried about trying. I used bthrow

Against zero I really almost had game one haha. You're right I needed to pivot grab more. I just seriously misinputted so much it was embarassing, but that's what happens when you haven't played more than 2 hours in 4 weeks. I think I can get Zero next time.

Xzax plays realllyyyyy weird. never fough anyone like him. If I play him more I'll probably start winning.

Rolling is very good in this game. That's why I do it so much. :p

Either way, with Xzax I think the double fsmash would've baited out some hits. Good matches though.

Rolling is especially hard for slow characters to punish. However faster characters can catch you for many unnecessary rolls. Also rolls are in my opinion a double-edged sword. On one side it's not that bad to roll in order to avoid getting hit. However in most situations, thanks to a roll you won't be able to punish some of the mistakes your ennemy makes. Often you have good alternatives such as jump to avoid getting hit(so you're still able to throw out an attack directly afterwards) or spotdodge. Even shield isn't that bad as an option instead of rolling.

I feel like people miss situations for some punishes because of their roll. It doesn't even matter if you're being punished for the roll or not, but in most situations I feel like you don't really get an advantage of a roll.

I don't think Olimar's roll is nearly as good at Diddy's. Rolling is much better online than in real life, so keep that in mind too.

Despite the bad performance of the Mr. G&W player, this was from For Glory.
Here is the exact moment where Bair and Hammer clash, without consequences.
I'm deeply sorry for the bad quality :(.
