So Gords, I have a bone to pick with you.
Basically it's to do with how wrong you are about HDMI cables and how stupid you are for spending more than $20 on one. THAT argument. Just need to get it off my chest cause I'm sick of not being able to formulate arguments on the spot.
Note that I'm mostly annoyed at myself here, but I'll get to that in a bit. Anyway:
Read

pt2/
pt3 for all your evidence needs.
At least read the first one and the last 3 if that's too much.
Basically, the bottom line is as long as the HDMI cable is constructed well, a $5 cable will perform equally as well as a $500 cable in most cases. Because the signal is digital, the cable will either work or it won't, and if it doesn't there will be really obvious errors (snow, blocks of bad pixels, etc.).
Now to be fair, there are a couple of unrealistic situations where it pays to spend more for a "better" cable. The first is cables that are very long (over 5m) have trouble maintaining a signal for the whole distance. The second is extreme bandwidth requirements that will not be necessary/commonplace in the near future (insanity resolutions, 3D video, etc.). The first is a common issue among cables of all types, and isn't an issue unless you run a store or for some other reason need to run a cable through the wall or other lengthy distance. The second has to do with the HDMI 1.4 spec, which is mainly theoretic for now. Even then, you should be able to find suitable cheap 1.4-compliant cables if you really want 3D.
You said you bought a cheap one that didn't work well and that "proved" that buying more expensive ones gives you better performance. All that proves is that you bought a cheap one, and based on what I've read it simply means that the manufacturers did a terrible job of putting it together. It's pretty much widely accepted that price makes no difference as long as the cable is built properly, the only performance issues discussed are those based around some extreme situations that won't be commonplace for a good 5 years or so. A google or two will tell you that easily.
But yeah, I seriously have no ability to form a proper argument on the spot, I said some rather dumb things that kind of made sense in my head but meant something really different with the wording I gave it. So you can imagine how frustrating it is when you know you're right but have zero capacity to word it in a manner that makes you understood.
