That was the federal election JP, I would have been so depressed I wouldn't have cared and actually eaten McDonalds. The state election on the other hand I don't give a **** about, so when the Liberals win I will not be eating McDonalds.

That's a rarity though (well, there's a reason this is like the first time in Australian political history something like this has happened )
But of course forming coalitions to stay in power when you didn't get a 50.1% majority is a very fine line.

Also the senate's always been finnicky. Even though the green's power kinda extends beyond just the senate this time around.

labor defeated liberal in 1999 after forming a minority vic government with rural independents.

it's not a rare occurence when there are effective incumbents and equally effective opposition. minority governments have currently dominated our brand of governance in other countries -- canada, uk, etc.

also, a 50.1% majority doesn't guarantee a majority house either. howard in 1998 election lost the primary majority and the 2PP majority (49.02% vs. beazley 50.98%) and held because there weren't many marginals to capture. labor fell short by 8 seats, despite a convincing overall majority http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_federal_election,_1998
