Okay, let's assume 50 people, and each match takes an average of 12 minutes.

Okay we'd have 6 brackets with 8 matches in each more or less crap I need to calculate since 2 is not a good remainder to have last bracket has 6 bottom 4 round-robin 5 brackets 8 matches 6 bracket has 6 matches round robin of four also has 6. That's 52 matches per round and 4 rounds is 208 matches. Times 12 is 2496 minutes. Let's say 6 TVs that's 416 minutes assuming it runs smoothly. 8 TVs is 312 minutes that's a little over 5 hours. Man I hope there isn't 50 people. If there's more I may have to kill off a select bunch of scrubs to save time. Anyway I hope that doesn't happen and actually there are less matches in the later rounds so that's a little less time too. About 6 less matches is 72 minutes of match time per round gone. Neat.

Okay that adds up to 250 minutes for the whole thing minus (maybe) the finale. So a good 4-5 hour estimate. That's totally doable. But that's for 8 TVs (and 50 people. How many people do you guys think will be there?) so basically...
that just might be the most confusing post i've ever read.

please explain it more clearly.

Due to the sheer number of people expected, there probably won't be any ranking battles.

Also, there will probably never be any ranking battles in the future, because I'm changing the name.

So please, come up with good names for the tourney format. I'll explain it.

Say you have 32 people. Rank them 1-32 by whatever method you feel is worthy. Then split them into pools of eight, by rank. 1-8 will be in pool 1, 9-16 in pool 2, and so on.

Now, when I say "pools" I don't mean round-robin pools. These pools are basic double elimination brackets.

Run the brackets until everyone in the pool has played two games, then stop. Now in each pool there are two people who are 2-0, two people who are 0-2, and four people who are 1-1.

In each pool the two people who are 2-0 will move up into the pool ranked one higher than the one they were in, while the two people who are 0-2 are dropped down one pool. (Except for the people who are 0-2 in the bottom pool. They'll stay in the bottom pool) People who are 1-1 will remain in the same pool.

Take the two people who are 2-0 in the highest pool and place them in the final bracket. Now run all the pools again using the same format except adjust the matches so that people are more likely to play against people they haven't played already.

Some pools will have to be adjusted as well because two people were removed from the pools altogether. I could explain how this would work but I'll skip it for now.

Repeat the process until you have eight (or whatever number you want) people in the final bracket.

Run the 8-man final bracket to get the tourney champion.

And there you go. Everyone except the people who advance to the final bracket early is guaranteed eight matches. (Technically seven due to the pool adjustments but who's counting?) The top players still finish the tournament much like a regular singles tournament, and everyone technically has a chance to make it if they're able to climb the ladder.

So once again I need a new name for the tourney format. Whoever comes up with the best one will have my thanks. I don't have a prize prepared right now but maybe I'll have one in the future.

I'm getting a Wii, and I pre-ordered it the first day you could. I camped outside the EB Games store across the street from Jack-In-The-Box/SJSU from 4:30 in the morning 'til 10 when the store opened. I was 4th in line because 3 other guys got there at 4. Hai!
