But I somehow lost that deck. I cried on the inside.
Wth!? gym leader O.O, pro status!!!! but anyways....NOOOOOOOO, i can't believe u lost the deck T_T. now i can't battle you!!!! :urg:

My first tourney loss was...technically...HLE at a small Fremont tournament.

Karthik's first tourney loss was...Henru aka The Jiggly Puffer at that same tournament. Which reminds me...

Scamp, whatever happened to Henru? I remembered he had a good falco at the time.

I don't know what happened to Henru. I haven't really spoken to him since around TG5 or 6, which I don't think he went to.

My first tourney loss was to Justin from Vallejo. My first tourney teams loss was to Justin and JR.

Alright, I think I've found a way to make ranking battles a viable tourney format.

I'd really like to run them this saturday in place of singles. However, because it is like a tourney, there will be the standard entry fee.

Under my soon-to-be-patented system you will play at least six matches. People will play the majority of their matches against other players around their relative ranking. ANYONE can work their way up to play against the top 8 if they win all (at least) six of their matches.

So anyone who enters, especially those who consider themselves an impossibility to place, is getting a pretty good deal. 6 tourney matches instead of maybe 2-4, and a chance to prove yourself against ranked competition should you do well.

Oh crap I haven't done the math to see how long this may take. I think I'll write it out as I think.

Okay, let's assume 50 people, and each match takes an average of 12 minutes.

Okay we'd have 6 brackets with 8 matches in each more or less crap I need to calculate since 2 is not a good remainder to have last bracket has 6 bottom 4 round-robin 5 brackets 8 matches 6 bracket has 6 matches round robin of four also has 6. That's 52 matches per round and 4 rounds is 208 matches. Times 12 is 2496 minutes. Let's say 6 TVs that's 416 minutes assuming it runs smoothly. 8 TVs is 312 minutes that's a little over 5 hours. Man I hope there isn't 50 people. If there's more I may have to kill off a select bunch of scrubs to save time. Anyway I hope that doesn't happen and actually there are less matches in the later rounds so that's a little less time too. About 6 less matches is 72 minutes of match time per round gone. Neat.

Okay that adds up to 250 minutes for the whole thing minus (maybe) the finale. So a good 4-5 hour estimate. That's totally doable. But that's for 8 TVs (and 50 people. How many people do you guys think will be there?) so basically...

HOLY CRAP WE NEED CUBES! BRING YOUR CUBE SO THE RANKING BATTLES CAN BE A SUCCESS! BRING MONEY TOO TO ENTER! PLEASE BUY ME SOME FOOD BECAUSE I'M GONNA BE DOING A LOT OF WORK AND I WILL BE HUNGRY! WISH LUNIN A HAPPY BIRTHDAY EVEN THOUGH IT TECHNICALLY PASSED ALREADY!

And that's about it for now. If anyone has any questions or concerns please let me know. Falcomist we will hopefully do this again (assuming it goes well) before the next list comes out so you should be okay.

hmm... no offense, but ranking battles sounds like pools with a different name (edit: with the exception that you're up against people around your skill level, making it a little more fair).

Um....yeah. That's kind of the whole point. This came up because it's really hard to rank people with random results/matchups. Look at NCT2, where I played in a pool where I only lost to S-Royal and CAOTIC. Neither are NorCal, and neither match helped determine anything about my place in the rankings.

I think this will not only help us make a more accurate ranking list, but it'll also help the whole community get better. By playing a bunch of people who are at your level, you get better at a more constant pace. If you do well at your current level, you get a shot at the next level and so on. That's generally the best way to get better. Plus I'm guaranteeing everyone at least five tourney matches. I can go up to eight (except for top players) if we have enough cubes and not too many players.

Also factor in that more accurate rankings would help with things like draft crews, or other unusual events.

Actually, though, I'm curious as to what you thought the ranking battles were going to be like before I posted anything. If you expect or expected something, don't be shy. Speak up. I'll listen.

My car better be out of the shop today so I can go this weekend. This ranking thing sounds interesting. ELO chess ratings would be more accurate though :)

Edit: Scamp, now that I think about it, I think ELO ratings would be a great idea. They're a lot of fun, easy to caclulate, and easy to implement. You'd just need to decide whether you give everyone the same initial rating, or whether you assigned estimated ratings off the bat. And then you go from there. You wouldn't even need an actual tournament based on the ratings. You could just use the wins/losses from the basic singles tournament to calculate individual ratings.

It's just an idea though. If you don't think it'll work, then that's fine :)

Doors open at 8am, but only come around that time if you would like to help me set up the room. If not, then come around 10am, when everything should be set up. Singles will start around 12pm, and we may have a crew battle before that depending on the number of people present around 10:30 am. Also, singles will be $8 and teams will be $10 per team. See yall there and like scamp said, PLZ BRING YOUR CUBES :)

$8 DOLLARS:dizzy: Haha may I ask why?

And Scamp, well as long as it could be done without affecting the tournament, but like, it does sound like a good idea -hasn't read your entire post about it- XD.

i actually didn't have any idea what it would be like and i kinda got confused reading your explanation. from the gist of it, i imagine something like 8 pools consisting of people of relatively equal skill level, then an 8 or 16-man bracket afterwards.

i just finished the last of my midterms. I'm free until finals.

i was thinking maybe i want to go to this, but by the looks of it it looks like there's not even going to be a singles tournament.

DSF is now at my place, german is coming with me tomorrow with the rest of the concord crew, singles BETTER happen. alex didnt travel from socal for nothing.. we can do ranking battles another day and another time. first priority is the tourny, with the singles and teams .. then if we have time we can do whatever the hell we want.

I like how people are giving opinions/assuming things about something that hasn't really been explained to them fully.

The ranking battles would replace the singles tourney, but it's just a different format. Maybe instead of calling them ranking battles I should call it a "more matches except for the guy who would have come in first in a regular tourney" tourney. Except that it would really help with the rankings if we did these once in a while.

If people don't want to do them that's fine, less work for me. But let me make something clear.

Ranking battles ARE a singles tournament.

And why are singles 8 bucks now? Wasn't there a post earlier about it being less? If there's a reason for the price increase, you need to let us know.

What? There are crew battles now? What is the concept of time?

EnigCam: Please PM me a link or PM an explanation of the ELO format. I'm not sure I'm familiar with it.
