I agree that MGS is an eccentric series with plenty of comedy and quirks. The series is probably so popular in part of the fact that it's so unique. You won't find a series that can carry as many heavy elements and moments as it does, but convincingly fit in the comic relief it does: Otacon going geek over anime not long after Gray Fox kills a bunch of people, the transmitter in MGS3, Ocelot juggling revolvers, the diarrhea running gag in MGS4, pretty much all the absurdity in Rising, etc.

But I don't really believe that makes it fit with Smash's general genre types. Do I particularly care? Not really. Snake is a great character in-and-out of the Smash series and I'd absolutely love his presence in this game. I just question if Sakurai views Snake as a character that so easily fits with this franchise or its demographic, and if that was part of his motivation for passing Snake up.

Now, does MGS fit better than a straight military series? Yes. By a hundred miles. I actually think that MGS is, in its own way, what would happen if Nintendo decided to make a "Mature" M-rated game. It's signed off on other very quirky series with plenty of objectional content (NMH, Bayonetta.)

I have to say, I'm impressed that Roy's animations are so unique, even if a lot of the moves are functionally the same as they were before. Makes me all the more excited about a possible return for this guy:

I'm so excited for Roy and Ryu at this point that it's going to be a huge letdown if they make the arbitrary decision to not release them with Lucas. Not that I'm anticipating that happening for any reason except my own pessimism and the fact that, now that I'm excited for these characters, I'll be forced to wait for them.

I want Wolf and Ice climbers the most but if these two come out sparkly and new I am all for it,

I don't see any reason to believe that Toon Link and Young Link aren't the same entity in concept.
