I like this list fairly, even though I fail to see why they put oracle of seasons higher than oracle of ages, they should of put "Oracle of ages/Oracle of seasons" imo.

The fact that a Virtual Boy game made the list invalidates the entire thing.

None. The Virtual Boy was the worst console to date. It had bright red lines on a black background and you put your face really close to the monitor = massive headaches and eye strain.

Basically, if I HAD to choose a Virtual Boy game, I'd just eat cyanide.

That and ALttP and the original Zelda beating Majora's Mask.

All three of them are good games, but MM is just flat out better than the other two.

Wouldn't you want to tell the tale of playing Virtual Boy...

Why are there more Gamecube games than N64 games? N64 was a better console overall imo.

Also, this is old as dirt.

How did Paper Mario 1000 year door beat the original?

Nothing against 1000 year door, but Paper Mario is pretty much the single most replayable game I've ever played. I think my brother hit around 13 full replays.

I agree. The first Paper Mario and Super Mario RPG: Legend of the 7 Stars are better games. The plot is better in both games and they are both more challenging. I haven't played a lot of games on the list but of the ones I played I'm satified with where they placed.

I haven't played Super Mario RPG, but I'm fairly sure thousand year door is tougher than Paper Mario 64.

I might be only remembering the final boss and pit of challenges from thousand year though, so Paper Mario 64 might be more challenging for all I know. However, the ways in which paper mario 64 was tougher (overworld puzzles) I'm not sure were intentional.

A lot of old games have very unintuitive completion requirements, which is quite ironic considering many of them come pre-internet. For example, how was I supposed to know I had to look into the light to get the flight cap star (Super Mario 64)?

I never understood what's so great about OoT BTW. To gamers it was THE step up from the 2-D realm, but to all post OoT players it wasn't as good as the newer installments and to all non-gamers it was amazing technologically, but kinda ugly with funky controls that were not nearly as precise as those of many 2-D games preceding it.

The original Metroid beat Super Metroid. 'Nuff said.

I love Metroid, but I'm sorry, the original one is arguably the worst in the series. The difficulty is unreal.

Well, the light is pretty bright, and definitely wasn't there before. First thing I did when it showed up after wondering what it was was look for a source. But yeah, everyone gets stuck on stuff.

While OoT definitely shouldn't be kept on a pedestal free from criticism, it seems a bit unfair to compare one of the first 3D console adventure games to 2D games in terms of controls. They were great at the time for what it was.

As for the list itself I generally like it. I just think some certain things are a bit off. Minish Cap over Tetris? No way. Also, Pokemon R/B/Y and Rogue Squadron both would move up on my list. Nevermind that I don't like Resident Evil games. But I was happy to see most of my favorites on there, and would see more if I looked again.

About to say the same. Rogue Squadron is one of the best Star Wars games ever made, and the 1st Gen Pokemon games so low? What gives, NP?

Speaking of, any word on that Rogue Squadron "Play for Wii" bundle, or was that a hoax?

I'm not so sure I agree with 3 Zelda games being in the top 4.

Viewtiful Joe and Soul Calibur II are way overrated on this list.

I'm pleased that Mario RPG atleast got a spot in the top 50.

Oh, and I'm going to say that OoT was perhaps TOO obvious as the top 1. Like, seriously. It almost always wins when it comes to "BEST GAME EVER" lists, it's beginning to irk me.

Let's face it guys, Nintendo Power is generally stupid. Well, they were actually less stupid back when this was made...but still.

I also find it rather funny that Super Metroid beat Zero Mission by FAR, as did Fusion, yet in their "Best of" for each separate system, they listed Zero Mission as the best overall for GBA and said that it was the best Metroid game.

Melee got 16th. And OoT got 1st. I can say I'm pretty happy about the results.
As glad as I am for OoT, these guys can **** themselves.

Banjo-Kazooie at 119

And don't get me started on various games that placed higher (or is it lower?) than DKC. Where's the Nintendo power building? There be fires to start.

Soul Calibur 2 is a darn good fighting game. From what I've heard, it's pretty well-balanced, it's got depth, and it's a lot of fun too. Plus, Link's in it.

Banjo-Kazooie being that low is a bit unfortunate, but I'd rather it not become another overrated 64 platformer anymore than it is. I love it to death, but there are better games.

And if OoT is "too obvious" as #1, then... doesn't that mean it belongs there? I mean, if everyone thinks of it as the best game ever, then not putting it on top would be wrong. Sure it's been overrated by fanboys, myself included, but that doesn't make it a worse game. Yes, nostalgia plays a role. Yes, it's lost a bit of its greatness to time. But it's still called the best game ever almost across the board. Ocarina of Time is an amazing game. It is overrated, but it deserves a lot of the praise it gets. And any game that gets picked for the top spot will instantly be called overrated by fanboys everywhere no matter what game it is.

I would not have put 3 Zeldas in the top 4 though. That just seems a bit much.

By "too obvious", I mean it's like, stereotypical. Like, expected, and that doesn't mean that it's supposed to be there, necessarily, it just means that everyone thinks "Best game list? I bet OoT's at the top.", whether that's thought begrudgingly or happily. Almost in an annoying way, like NO other game EVER makes it.
Maybe that's just how I feel, but...eh.

And not everyone thinks of it as the best game ever, myself included. I got through the first two dungeons -- under duress, I might add, and I just don't have the motivation to get any further. Hard to like a game if it won't pull you in. I've tried, trust me, and I love Zelda games. But OoT just doesn't capture my interest very well. It's not a BAD game, but it's only been average in my opinion.

I'm trying to avoid using that whole "Rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia" crap argument, because I HATE it when people try pinning me on that. But I feel like that's a lot of why OoT is so loved.

Top game lists are pointless to an extent anyways. No matter what, there's going to be at least one person highly displeased with the list. It's just too subjective to make a legitimate, final list.

When you look at the list and beat all the games in the top ten then you can say they deserve to be there and i agree they are there for a reason they are the best of the best although i think melee should be higher up other than that i cant really complain

I'm pretty freakin' disappointed that there is only one Wario Land game on the list. Heck, even Wario World isn't there. WL games are so unappreciated...

With the current trend of internet coverage, one has to wonder how NP can still not get cancelled.

Notice the trend,

Old machines have many classic great games, all the gamers and non-gamers a like invested in these games back in the 90's.

Now what's Nintendo making, oh games like "Gardening Mama" or dumbed down versions of our favorites.

Don't get me wrong, I'll always be a Nintendo fan, I just wish they cared...

Gardening Mama is actually developed by Cooking Mama Limited, and published by Taito and Majesco. Nintendo just licenses this junk.

The problem is Nintendo itself. It is probably the console with the most dreck, and always has been. Just look at the DS. Who buys DS games? Little kids with their Pokemanz, or soccer moms with their Big Brain Academy. It's just the nature of being a "family console."

EDIT: And the Atari 5200. I forgot that one.

Um...what? There are too many things wrong with this post unless I'm reading it wrong.

For starters, the DS has a fair amount of crap and all but there are a tidy sum of people on this forum who think it's the best handheld. I highly beg to differ, but the DS has some pretty good games.

Second, I may be reading this wrong, but Pokemon is not just for kids and kids aren't the only ones who like it. It has a fairly large competitive scene, and the entire Poke Center says hi. Most of the regulars there are far from kids.

I wasn't purposely going out of my way to slag Nintendo. I agree that the DS has some great games, seeing as I own one.

Second, I recognize that Pokemon is not just for kids. Heck, I've played Pokemon Fire Red, Leaf Green, and Pearl. And Pokemon Stadium. And possibly others that I'm forgetting. I'm just pointing out the DS' target audience right now, in relation to its multitude of games that are being released.

About the Pokemon part, yeah, I guess I misunderstood what you were saying. Sorry.

Nintendo's entire target audience right now is either too young to care enough how good a game is or too non-gamer to recognize what's a good game and what's shovelware, you are right about that.

The DSi is where most of that is being focused now, though, in my opinion. It's like the Wii all over again but in portable form, carrying along stupid commercials and slogans with it. But maybe that's just me.

Yes...isn't it sad?

I've switched into the commercial right at the end twice now. I believe my exact words, aloud, when I saw it the first time were "Are you kidding me?!"

Seriously.

Whoa, I just noticed that Mario Kart Double Dash got 25th, and Mario Kart 64 only got 53rd? 64 had the best battle level ever (Block Fort), while Double Dash's battle mode was pretty unplayable. I do enjoy Double Dash, but it's nowhere near what Mario Kart 64 was.

O.K., I admit that I actually avoid playing handheld games other than pokemon, but I really do have to partially agree with the Firus. I say partially because personally, the DS is pretty clearly the best handheld (gaming device), but that's like saying the ipod is the best portable music player.

Unfortunately, the DS is an awesome handheld, otherwise I wouldn't own one because I dislike handhelds in general. But Mario Kart DS was awesome, and the first online Mario Kart. Phoenix Wright is also awesome. And yes, Pokemon is awesome. The DS simply has a number of "must have" titles that even people who dislike using handhelds (myself) are willing to buy the console for. Tons of people buy DS's, and it may very well have the best game library of any system currently on the market.

"Mama's taking on.....one...tough MOTHER...."

*thick accent* "Oh my goodness me!"

Probably. As I said, I came in at the very end -- I seriously just saw the box, but that was more than enough.

Yeah, I wouldn't say that it's the best handheld gaming device, but I would say it likely has the best library of any system on the market at the moment (not including the Virtual Console, not that I ever do count that as part of the Wii's library). Phoenix Wright alone nearly gets it that, I love that game.

Just curious, but why no love for handhelds? There's plenty of trash games, sure, but there are some truly amazing games that you're missing out on. Don't worry, I don't hold it against you, but it's just not something I've heard before, and I'm curious as to the reason behind it.

No worries. I just wanted to make myself clear. Sometimes I'm too glib for my own good. And yes, I have to agree that Phoenix Wright is gold.

I have a lot of love for handhelds. PSP and DS. In my opinion, there are plenty of great DS games. Between my boyfriend and I, we have well over thirty games for the DS, but only about five or six for the PSP.

However, the DS has a lot of dreck that you literally have to shovel through.

And the PSP suffers from lack of support.

I beg to differ but the PSP has a ton of great games like Battle front and FF games (crisis core and tactics) and alot more although this isn't a debate topic i just wanted to point that out
