Chrom was planned to be in Smash 4, but was scrapped due to being ‘not unique enough’. He’ll certainly be on the chopping block for the next game.
They don’t even portray Chrom accurately.

I’m still baffled we didn’t get Shadow as an echo
Id rather him be his own character tbqh

How early/late do you think these three were included? Were they last minute? Were they always meant to be included?
Chrom is hard to say, because on one hand, he's the kind of echo with gameplay differences, and was chosen because of the ballot. On the other, all the ways he was represented in 4 are still there, and he even uses the model from Robin's FS and victory screen while DS has a brand new model.

I think that was the real reason why he was added. He was just a very easy clone to add considering that they had already made a model of him in the previous game.

The awkward part about making Shadow his own character is that his moveset would be built on games people dont like (Shadow the hedgehog and Sonic 06) because that's where all his unique abilities come from.

At least building him off of Sonic would make people think of the games he was in that people liked.

In fact, nearly every newcomer in Smash Ultimate's base roster had some form of representation in prior Smash titles. The only ones who didn't were the Belmonts and Incineroar.

Inkling: They had a Mii Fighter costume and a trophy in Smash 4.
Ridley: He was a stage cameo in Smash 64, a trophy in Melee, a boss in Brawl, and a stage hazard in Smash 4.
Daisy: She was a trophy in Melee, Brawl, and Smash 4.
Chrom: Chrom made a cameo in Robin's Final Smash and one of Robin's victory poses. He was also a Mii Fighter costume.
Dark Samus: Dark Samus was a trophy in Brawl and a full on Assist Trophy in Smash 4.
King K. Rool: He was a trophy in Melee, Brawl, and Smash 4 and also appeared as a Mii Fighter costume.
Isabelle: She was an Assist Trophy and a Mii Fighter costume in Smash 4.
Ken: Ken appeared as a trophy in Smash 4 that you could get by buying Ryu.

Actually wait...
Mac is AT in Brawl, Playable in 4
Dark Samus is AT in 4, Playable in Ultimate
X is AT in Ultimate Playable in "the next Smash."

It does follow we should get at least ONE assist trophy upgrade.

When we have character support threads I wanna be on the Alucard one.
X isn't an assist trophy.

Space Invaders gives us this music:

Bubble Bobble gives us this music:

Check-AND-mate.
Who is to say Space Invaders wouldn’t get us other Taito music and content? Along with the other options and what other folks said. Also you seem very set in your ways, just generally speaking.

Or… it could be based on Sonic Adventure 2. He has tons of abilities in that game.

Also, I think Shadow using guns is cool. I’ve always believed this since 2005. Seeing Shadow the Hedgehog load a shotgun in CGI was a pivotal moment in my childhood that morphed me into the man I am today.

I think we'll continue to see exponentially more assist trophy promotions as the series goes on, as more and more assist trophies seem to be "consolation" prizes for characters with significant popular or moveset potential that just couldn't make the cut for one reason or another. With Brawl, most of the assists were more abstract (Helirin, Lakitu, Tanks and Infantry, etc.) and mostly represented smaller Nintendo franchises. Smash for Wii U/3DS placed a greater emphasis on adding supporting characters from franchises already in the roster (Ashley, Dark Samus, Skull Kid, Midna, etc.). Ultimate doubled down on this further, with characters that did moderately well on the ballot but not Ridley/K. Rool-tier well like Isaac, Krystal, and Shovel Knight being added.

I'd honestly be really surprised if we didn't see at least a couple of assist trophies upgraded. Waluigi is the most obvious contender, but Alucard, Ashley, Issac, Bomberman, Zero, Skull Kid, Takamaru, Shadow, and Knuckles all seem like they could join the battle next time.

He's just getting X and Zero mixed up since both characters are being added to Super Smash Bros: Crescendo in 2026 :4pacman:

Crescendo, huh?

If they don't get into that game as playable characters, maybe the reason would have all stated when they ran under the table, and they could see they were unable...

And before joining Smash, they would have ran into the bedroom, and they were struck down by someone...it was their doom...

I kinda wish they'd do more assist trohies like how Brawl did it.

I think it's neat, the main one that comes to mind nowadays is Pong.

Idk if I’m on Team Sukapon. I don’t really know much about Sukapon’s game, or about Sukapon itself.

I would personally prefer to see Prince Sable or Takamaru upgraded, but all three are equally likely to be the next retro rep.

Or even AT introduced in Ultimate so maybe Sukapon I still haven't tried it tho but I love the AT design itself. But yeah could be anyone you listed way more than I can remember off hand lol
I would love Sukapon as a playable fighter! I think that robot would be awesome!

Takamaru would be cool, too!

I'd prefer Sukapon over Takamaru solely based on how much more unique Sukapon's build is. Yeah yeah, I'm biased for funny scrimblo cartoon people, but at the end of the day I believe Sukapon has a lot more going for him because of what his unique body type offers, as well as his methods of attack like throwing clones of his head and rearranging his body into stiff and bizarre "poses". He has such a unique way of moving and attacking with all that NES jank that practically nobody else on the roster can compare, especially if they keep him close to the source material. Speaking of source material, Sukapon originates from, of all things (and correct me if i'm wrong on this), a traditional fighting game developed by Nintendo, which is practically unheard of and honestly really cool.

His limbs being separate from his body can also allow for a lot of unique attacks, and I wholeheartedly believe that even if someone like Rayman gets in, Sukapon will still be guaranteed to stand out. I'm particularly fond of his PMEX Remix interpretation.

Takamaru isn't bad, but he doesn't make nearly as much of an impression on me from a design, character, and origin standpoint.

Also Sukapon is a comedian, apparently. You can never go wrong with that.

So, with Sakurai still making games here, apparently, how do you feel about the next Smash Bros. coming out in one or two years? Three, maybe?
If the next Mario Kart is rumored to be a crossover with Nintendo series, then it'll be a deluxe port. If not, then it's a new game

We all are. It's such a no-brainer.

You mean...the scene where he pumps an SMG? One of the most widely mocked scenes in gaming?

Yes. It was badass and ahead of its time.

If Fortnite had Sonic characters today, Shadow holding guns would be positively received, just as any crossover event would. It goes hard as ****.

Except for the part where StH wasn't a crossover. Characters with guns in Fortnight is positively received because that's the joke. And people get a kick out of that joke.

StH was Sega trying to make an edgy, cool version of Sonic. And Sonic was already them trying to be edgy and cool. And it was the laughing stock of the internet.

You can be forgiven for thinking it was cool if you were 10 when you played it. But not for not realizing now that 10-year-old you only thought that because they were 10.

The weirdest thing about K. Rool is that he never had an active role in previous Smash games despite being the main villain of the DK series. Heck, the costume only appeared probably because of the ballot. But the fact that he was never an Assist Trophy or boss or stage cameo or anything besides a collectable item is just so odd to me. I think some of that is just how awkwardly the DKC brand has been handled since the Rare buyout.

Its felt like core Nintendo has often never had the best understanding of DKC's popularity until relatively recently. Certain decisions in the 2000's reek of experiments that didn't necessarily play to the brand's strengths and that it took so long for K Rool to become prominent in Smash until the ballot is illustrative of the dissonance between where fan interests were vs mainline Nintendo's. It's not really something to pin on Sakurai and his team given that it seemed to be a larger issue throughout the company.

I will watch it but what grabbed my attention was the comments in the tweet vs our little dusty corner of the Internet at smash boards. looks like a fair mix of "I hope he works on something else" (Reboot Ice Climbers like be did Kid Icarus for example) and "I hope we get a deluxe." Or NO new game at all because at least in those scenarios Ultimate and EiH stays on top, since so many people are afraid of who will get cut. And 2B as a newcomer.
I kinda understand that mindset. I mean part of me doesn't mind as i do prefer Sakurai-led Smash but it does sting someone as passionate and knowledge about Gaming and its mechanics, on what makes them work etc with his new youtube channel only has Smash as his main output these days.

Wouldn't seen his talents on other like that Kid Icarus, a new ips or Even give a crack at Star Fox!?

He is one of the few who relatively passionate about the IP and with Nintendo seemingly throw darts for it's next title. Maybe he and Miyamoto could collaborate on something,

He already got the rail-shooter aspect down.

Nintendo being the especially odd/stubborn one that goes off and does things at it's own pace makes me think they still won't do much for the online.
Why do people keep this repeating this? Seen this is exact line over and over in 2020 and it was quite irritating. Do people not know that Nintendo just publishes Smash Bros, not develops?

They already done rollback for Arms and MK8D. This is Bandai Namco's problem. This is the same issue they had with their other problem with their other fighting games like Soul Calibur and FighterZ which only begun to recifity for the latter. Even for the latter i think more Arc Systems Works doing due their success with Strive's online.

I would be curious to hear why Sakurai wasn't able to implement rollback in Ultimate, though. My guess is getting rollback off the ground for free-for-alls or any matches with dynamic stages or items just wasn't possible.
He had one time in a Column. He said had implemented with Ultimate but it never worked probably. Most likely due how Online in Ultimate works and with many variables of modes come instead being more set and uniform like 4. The 2 things Smash 4 did better than Ultimate.

There was a problem fetching the tweet

I assume it work only for 1v1 than anything else. Hope this convinces Sakurai to bring For Fun/Glory again
