Yeah I’m not blaming the other player on running because that was really the only option. It just got kind of boring after a while. I was more referring to some of the less powerful transformation characters where most of the time, it felt like you just chased someone around for a bit without really accomplishing anything. That might just be me being bad at the game though lol.
No, I feel you, though I think that was mainly just Giga Bowser since his speed was so low and his jump height was non-existent. Otherwise yeah, the big stages where Giga simply had no chance of keeping up and where Super Sonic and Landmaster could get stuck on parts of the stage.

I think Lucario’s and Little Mac’s transformation final smashes felt pretty weak in Smash 4. I was never able to do much with them compared to other smash attacks. I think Wario had another transformation in Brawl but it’s hard to remember how good that one was. Again, maybe it’s just me being bad at catching people and others used them a lot better. It’s sad because I love the transformations conceptually but they never really led to fun gameplay for me.

I think if we need to freshen up Smash's core gameplay, it's best to do it one change at a time so everyone can acclimate instead of a big load of changes at once that may be alienating.

I think a proper super move system that just throws out "enhanced specials" just by itself would work wonders. Plus, they could consolidate a lot of other "meter" mechanics into it like Mac's KO Punch or Terry's Desperation mechanic.

When it comes to changing movesets, I think only Zelda and Ganondorf really need it since their Smash portrayals are admittedly very far removed from their canon portrayals at this point (and I'd like to point out that they didn't start that way in Melee; the Zelda team's portrayals drifted them apart). And for Zelda, all she really needs is some Light Arrow projectile Smashes if anything.

I agree on that. My only concern is that I don’t want everyone’s abilities to be solely based on the most recent game like some people propose. I like the thought of the characters movesets as an amalgamation of all their most iconic skills from across the series. It’s cool to take some ideas from the most recent entries but I don’t think that should be all there is. Not saying your suggestion is anything like that, just a general preference of mine.

I suppose EX moves would work too, but I feel they'd be far more limited than what proper supers could offer. We'd miss out on potential utility or install supers for example.

As for the proposed changes, I don't think they're really complex enough to where they'd be overwhelming to introduce both.

The extra tilts are pretty much just of extension of what already exists via angled tilts. And the supers are just a rework/divergence of the current FS system.

I'd honestly put in on par with the jump from 64 to Melee. New special, new throws & pummeling, chargeable smash attacks, air dodging, wall/ceiling techs, wavedashing, etc. Actually, perhaps arguably less of a big change.

Also, change of heart on Ganon?!

You could make the argument that Zelda and Ganondorf don't exactly have "iconic skills" in the first place. Ganondorf's abilities are wildly inconsistent, and Zelda only uses her Light Arrows some of the time.

I'd say "super moves" just being souped-up specials works as a "general but not concrete rule": it's mostly followed but there are still exceptions (hell, Street Fighter follows this already).

Extra tilts could be fine, but I think they need to follow another "general rule" that back tilts and forward tilts aren't overly divergent from one another in terms of function unlike forward airs and back airs.

Also, change of heart on Ganon?!
What I meant was that a big revamp is only really feasible for Zelda and Ganon, not that I'd like it. They're the only two whose portrayals in canon have diverged from Smash.

That said, I stand by that Ganon's "iconic" canon abilities are stock and boring rather than the unique, standout punching he does in Smash.

I see what you meant now. When I see "enhanced specials" I immediately think of EX moves since that's what that usually means.

You were more referring to stuff like Shinku Hadoken and Shin Shoryuken which are still derived from the base specials as well.

As for the other point, I won't argue Zelda since she tends to not do a whole lot in any of her appearances but there's still a few consistent things for Ganondorf.

Brute strength, magic (mostly in the form of energy projectiles) and swordsmanship are all present in some form in all his appearances.

As far as revamps go I think you could make the argument for a few more like Sonic, but overall I do agree that most of the cast doesn't need anything outside of the standard handful of tweaks between games.

Going back to Zelda and Ganon, I would argue that rather than diverging from Smash recently it's moreso that Smash's portrayals of the two were never accurate to begin with.

In the more literal sense mind you, I do think in terms of play style/feel they did just fine.

And agree to disagree on the last point I suppose. It's also very ironic to call Ganondorf's punching in Smash standout and unique when he's a clone.

I get that you're referring to the idea of Ganondorf as a brawling warlock but I just found that statement funny.

Yeah, there really is no other Smash Character who punches quite like Ganondorf.

In their defense, Ganon at the very least doesn’t play like Falcon at all. As far as being a brutish, slow but frighteningly powerful brawler there isn’t anyone else on the roster who feels like Ganondorf. And I’d argue he’s got some great physical attacks that pack a really satisfying punch such as his fair and ftilt. Ganondorf feels like a uniquely strong physical powerhouse, I agree with that.

Still I can’t say I agree that his warlock abilities are boring, especially in the context of Smash. I mean, we’re at a surprising lack of mages on the roster to this day. Mixing in some of his magic abilities would be a welcome choice IMO, but it doesn’t need to be at the expense of the niche he’s carved out for himself either.

Ganondorf is an odd case where I can fundamentally respect and even enjoy him as a fighter given the context of his creation in Melee when there was only one real game he was in to work off of... but at no point have I ever felt like I was really controlling the Ganondorf from the actual LoZ games just an interesting facsimile of him.

Its a bit like Diddy Kong in that respect; interesting character to fight as just one that feels pretty removed from the figure I enjoy in the Country titles.

I agree on both ends. Especially because I care a lot more about the original SNES DKC trilogy than DK64 and most of Diddy’s attacks (that weren’t just made up for Smash) came from that game. I know it’s unpopular but I do still kind of wish they had gone with the original idea of a Diddy/Dixie team duo. I’d also love to see the animal buddies somehow incorporated into Smash because they were a big part of the fun of DKC and what really set it apart from other platformers. Both aspects are still possible with a Dixie or Dixie/Kiddy moveset at least.

Yeah, I feel Ganon/Ganondorf’s most recognizable moves are Dead Man’s Volley, the ground pound, the spear toss, and the fire bats. He didn’t really do anything particularly interesting in his Wind Waker or Twilight Princess boss fights other than basic sword swings. I do need to get around to beating Tears though since I hear he has a lot of great material in that game.

How do people feel about taking some moveset inspiration from Demise? He had a really cool lightning sword attack that could be fun in Smash and was the origin of Ganondorf so that could make sense too.

We could always go the "Add Pig Ganon, give him more traditional Ganon-y stuff and keep Ganondorf as is" route. And then everyone would just kinda win, we'd have the new moveset without sacrificing the old one either. We have two Zeldas and three Links, two Ganons really doesn't seem extreme to me.

Yeah, I’m not opposed to the idea. I’d love to see classic Ganon’s Oracle of Seasons/Ages design as its own character. At the same time, I do still want to see a completely separate character beyond just another incarnation of the Triforce trio. I’d be really happy if we got Ganon and one or two other new Zelda characters.

The main issue with g dorf being a stance character is this:
Lets say i wanna fight g dorf as link and than g dorf just uses his bruiser Moveset!
I actually wanna see link and gdorf having an epic Sword/ Sword and trident clash!

But their COULD be.

Just...give all that stuff to Black Shadow. Where a slow, powerful version of Falcon wouldn't feel so out of place.

Then Gandondorf can be like Ganondorf instead.

Except then Ganondorf still wouldn't play like any versions of Ganondorf. And Pig Ganon is already perfect as a boss.

This is what I’m talking about when I talk about my only real issue with clone characters. The character gets in as a clone due to time constraints but then never gets completely reworked to be more faithful to their source material because people enjoy playing as the current version. I’ve been a Ganondorf main since Melee so I can relate to that point but I still think it would be more fun if he played more true to his canon abilities.

I like the idea of bringing back Melee’s Ganondorf moveset and giving it to Black Shadow for those that still love his moveset. I feel like that’s a win win for everyone. I don’t think Black Shadow is particularly likely to ever get in otherwise and it’s not like he ever physically fought so he works fine as a Falcon clone in my opinion.

I mean I just don't understand why a Ganondorf who is more accurate towards canon and a Ganondorf who is a slow, powerful bruiser are treated as mutually exclusive concepts. Especially as Ganondorf has been slowly crawling closer and closer to his canonic self while still retaining his core play style that people love.

He can get more lore accurate moves, just make those moves hit super hard. You know. Like Doriyah.

And here's a crazy evil idea: keep the Warlock Punch for old time's sake, but map it to a taunt button. The real damage it deals is psychological anyway.

This is what Project M did when it changed the Warlock Punch to Dead Man's Volley. And it reanimated it so it involves his sword taunt.
Huh, I never played Project M so I didn't actually know that.

That's neat. I guess the idea must not be that crazy if someone else thought of it first.

I brought up Tales yesterday and I think it got overlooked with all the Zelda discussion at the time. Does anyone have any thoughts on a potential Tales character? Basically, I was saying that I think the Arise DLC helps Alphen and Shionne’s chances because it keeps them relevant for longer.

I don't know if it makes them any more viable than they already were as the most recent protagonists. Tales has pretty good odds of being one of the next Namco IPs on board in general (its only major competition being Dark Souls, in my opinion), and as a long running franchise I suspect it may get another new entry before the next Smash. In my eyes unless they're like super duper breakout stars their role will shift over to the next protagonist and so forth.

I'm not particularly a frequent fan of the series so I can't tell you how popular Alphen and Shionne are in comparison to the other protagonists - a quick search tells me that Alphen is actually quite popular - but I'd be pretty shocked if they went for them over the more persisting legacy choices of Lloyd or Yuri. The former seems to be the go to just based on the legacy within Smash itself and having much more consistent fan requests but I do think Yuri remains a bit underestimated in the process.

As for Tales in general... I dunno. It's a series that I've never had much attachment or deep knowledge of so admittedly it slips under my radar more often than not. There are a few other Namco series of varying likelihood - Dark Souls, Taiko, Katamari - that I'd rather see represented. But I think Tales is probably the next big RPG series to hit up, right?

My logic is that being the most recent protagonist loses a lot of its advantages when your last appearance is still several years old. The fact that the DLC brings the characters into the spotlight again helps solve that issue. I do agree that they aren’t the only good options for Tales reps in Smash though.

Tales of Symphonia was many people’s (myself included) intro into the series so Lloyd makes sense for that reason. While I really enjoyed the game, I wasn’t as big on Lloyd as a character. My personal bias doesn’t matter in character selection so Lloyd is still very likely to be the one if we do get a Tales rep.

Yuri was a great protagonist and Vesperia was a really fun game but I don’t think he has quite the same unique moveset potential as Velvet or Alphen/Shionne. I would still be very interested if Yuri incorporated Repede into his moveset somehow. I think a sword fighter and dog companion could be really unique and fun. Not saying he can’t be unique in his own either, just not to the same level as Velvet or Alphen/Shionne. Admittedly, I play as Rita far more often than Yuri so that might be my bias talking again.

I really hope Lloyd gets out of mii fighter jail at some point. I really do.
I will admit that Lloyd does offer some pretty unique moveset potential for Smash. The only dual blade wielders we have right now are Pit and Dark Pit. Lloyd would finally give us another while also coming with his own particular set of skills (skills that make him a nightmare for people like you :p).

It’s actually so wild that we’ve had so many swordies by now but this is still largely untapped. Lloyd has never been terribly exciting to me but at least this guarantees he would play and animate in a really unique way. I’m definitely open to seeing what they would do with it.

And side note, just want to appreciate how creative the Pits’ bows are functionally. Just really unique stuff and the way it smoothly animates from being connected and separated is one of those subtle things you take for granted. They aren’t the flashiest characters on the roster but I’d argue their weapon is one of the most distinct in the game.

Nah, adding Pig Ganon is not an excuse for leaving Ganondorf untouched.
I mean, generally I am ok with representing the more beastly forms of Ganon through the Final Smash and/or through a boss or bosses. But even if you are a person who wants a separate playable Pig Ganon, Ganondorf should still be well-represented.
Besides, the presence of any new Ganon/Ganondorf moveset is mostly just going to make the old Dorf set seem more and more outdated.

Exactly.

I don't give a single **** about Pig Ganon, I didn't grow up with his games, I don't find his design appealing, and I'm not interested in the next Zelda newcomer being another form of the trifecta I find significantly less interesting.

I want Ganondorf himself fully realized, nothing more, nothing less, and nothing... porcine.

I'm looking forward to the next Ganondorf being still reminiscent of his roots but evolved even more than in Ultimate to show his new style from TotK.

I DO care about Ganon. I did grow up with him. And his OoT design is badass as hell.

But, as I've said, he's already being represented perfectly in Smash. As a Boss.
But what if I want trident wielding classic pig Ganon? If we consistently get at least 2 Links and Zeldas, I don't see why adding Ganon would be a problem.

Plus, the older games and 2D/top down Zelda in general are lacking in content compared to the 3D titles. He could be used to rep those more given that's where he's pretty much been exclusively used.

Granted I would still want another Zelda rep on top of his addition.

Personally, I'd Finish Ganondorf, because his Playstyle is there, you just need to update his Animations and Moves like a mix of what Zelda and Pit ended up getting. Make Toon Link Unique, and actually make Zelda feel Smart!!!!!!! As for the Newcomers, Pig Ganon is right there he should be here, and Midna and Wolf Link barely count as a New Link so Midna would be epic. Zelda pretty much perfected everything else however so this is mainly just bringing the Character Lineup up to speed.

You know what confuses me tho? when people say Zelda should get a researcher moveset!
I mean even champion zelda just fights with magic!
Also i think i can solve the Ganon(dorf) issue!
just give me some time!
Also petiotion to let toon link keep spin attack, boomerang, bombs and bow and only change his normals to his combos from wind waker!
and maybe his down smash into a hit with the skull hammer!

Top Bottom
