This may not technically be Smash related but...

...sometimes, exploring Nintendo's history (or what they consider important to their history) is just so fun to do. It's kind of why I love the trophies and spirits in the Smash Bros series. It's like some kind of Nintendo museum.

I also love the background. A mix of Nintendo and third-party characters.

(Plus, I can't help but noticed that a certain Hot-Blooded Tough Guy is shown TWICE on that page. Awesome!)

A day ago I challenged myself to form a lineup of exactly 100 unique fighters. The only caveat I made myself obey were that I could only have a maximum of six straight clone characters (same number as Melee). Otherwise, I gave myself no restrictions for the other 94 choices, meaning I was free to include whoever I wanted and reimagine/update returning choices as I pleased. This is what I came up with in a subpar collage.

Wanted to do this as a decent distraction for the thread. Feel free to give your thoughts and opinions, hopefully I can ignite some fresher discussion with this whole "100 fighters" thing.
I just wanna say kudos for using some of that good-ass classic Compile-era art for Arle

I just now thought of Frey and Freya, the two protagonists from Zangeki no Reginleiv. They could in my opinion come as newcomers in future Super Smash Bros. games, but the question is whether Freya should have her own moves or be a clone or echo of Frey, although I've never played Zangeki no Reginleiv and that makes sense since it was only released in Japan.

Sadly i didnt have specific assets so i had to use those i had!
Nice. Is this intended for a Smash game or a new Hyrule Warriors game? Either way, it looks like there are a lot of fun characters here (but some people would argue it might go a bit far in making up for Smash’s lack of Zelda characters if it’s for Smash lol).

Interesting. I’ve never heard of that game before but it’s always fun to learn about new games and characters through Smash. It’s been too long for me since that’s happened.

Being a big Final Fantasy IX fan, my mind always goes to Freya Crescent when I hear the name Freya. She’d also be a fun fighter in Smash though she’d probably get passed over for Zidane, Vivi, or maybe Garnet.

I'd actually thought of Frey and Freya myself at some point, though I'm not holding my breath of them, given their Japan-only status. We all know how Sakurai approaches characters like THAT nowadays...

Still, even I wasn't sure if the two should be clones of each other (a'la Simon and Richter Belmont), or alt. skins of each other.

Its for a zelda only smash and 36 characters are certainly possible in that case unlikely yes but not impossible!

My idea for a 100-character (plus Echoes) roster:

Characters 1-82: The SSB Ultimate Roster, plus all original 7 Echoes.

Echoes of Veteran characters:

10ε.- Ninten (Earthbound Beginnings)
11ε.- Jody Summer (F-Zero X)
17ε.- Hilda (The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds)
18ε.- Dr. Luigi (Dr. Mario/Luigi)
38ε.- Shadow (Sonic the Hedgehog)
64ε.- Octoling (Splatoon)

83.- Dixie Kong (Donkey Kong)
84.- Ashley (Warioware)
85.- Ring Fit Trainee (Ring Fit Adventures)
86.- Impa (Legend of Zelda, specifically the Ages of Calamity version)
87.- Alear (Fire Emblem Engage)
88.- Meowscarada (Pokemon Scarlet/Violet)
89.- Captain Toad (Captain Toad: Treasure Trackers)
-> 89ε.- Captain Toadette
90.- Eggman (Sonic the Hedgehog)
91.- Arle (Puyo Puyo)
92.- Twintelle (ARMS)
93.- Chun-Li (Street Fighter)
94.- Paper Mario (Paper Mario)
95.- Waluigi (Super Mario)
96.- Rayman (Rayman)
97.- Shantae (Shantae)
98.- Terra (Final Fantasy VI)
99.- Professor Layton (Professor Layton)
100.- Phoenix Wright (Ace Attorney)
-> 100ε.- Miles Edgeworth

Final Roster: 115 (100 Characters + 15 Echoes)

I'm just saying...it took Actual Smash until Brawl to get to that amount. And no non-Smash platform fighter has even reached that amount, besides Brawlhalla, which not only follows a Games As A Service style model, but tons of the characters are also just alternate skins, inflating the count.

As a point of comparison:

Super Smash Bros. (N64) - 12
Super Smash Bros. Melee - 26
Super Smash Bros. Brawl - 39
Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U - 58 (51 base)
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 89 (76 base)
DreamMix TV World Fighters - 17
TMNT Smash Up (Wii) - 16
Cartoon Network PunchTime Explosion - 18
Cartoon Network PunchTime Explosion XL - 26
PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale - 24 (20 base)
Rivals of Aether - 18
BrawlOut - 25
Slap City - 11
Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl - 25 (20 base)
Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 - ~29 (~25 base)
Multiversus - 23 (16 base)
Fraymakers - 6 revealed, ~10 planned (?)

When it comes to platform fighters, and even including the really bad early ones like Punch-Time Explosion and Smash Up, 36 characters for a first entry is literally unheard of. Like...it's significantly more than anything else's first go at the moment.

The sweet spot as of right now is about 20-25, not 36. That's far less realistic for a first entry.

It’s possible Oracle was counting the potential DLC in that number. Ultimate got 12 characters I believe. It’s reasonable with a starting roster of 20-25, we could potentially reach 36 by the time it is done.

The again, it's not even a guarantee that Smash itself is gonna get 12 DLC characters every time, let alone a new series on its first go. Not to mention Smash didn't even do 12 for its first go-round.

That said, I am guessing this hypothetical Zelda Smash roster is just for fun anyway

Fair enough. I’m guessing it’s just for fun too. It can definitely be challenging to narrow down lists like this and not feel like you’re leaving out a lot of favorites. I’d love to do the same for a hypothetical second TMNT platform fighter since I feel Smash Up never really lived up to its potential.

Wow! I never really thought about it but them adding 25 characters to base to start with 76 characters... no wonder they be like nah we ain't doing this again lol really does put into perspective what a massive deal ultimate was to produce.

One thing I think would be pretty interesting to see in a hypothetical "Smash reboot" is how different series would be represented without the need to grandfather in older content for the sake of it. It'd be especially cool for some series that have been around for ages, like Metroid or The Legend of Zelda, given there's a lot of things like stages you could include without being beholden to "rising lava stage quotas" or something

I'm not sure everybody else but I think I can do without the stage morphing feature for the next game. It's one of the few things in Smash Ultimate that I was never really excited about anyway.
Neither was I. I was not the biggest fan of that feature myself. It did change battles some and make them a bit more chaotic, if you know what I mean, but that is it.

By the way, I have an item idea for Smash Bros. It is from the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

The Player Swap, or Character Swap Monitor.

This monitor, as an item for Smash Bros., works like this: When it by the player that attacks it, the player's character randomly turns into another character that is playable in the game. Of course, the selection of what character the player's character turns into is random, but it can be any character in the game. This works on unlockable characters, too, provided you have unlocked them to begin with.

What do you all think?

You know what? In hindsight, I think it would've been better to trade Stage Morph for the return of every stage in the Smash series*, including skins based off previous versions of Battlefield and Final Destination.

*with the appropriate changes made to stages like Pac-Maze and Pyrosphere, of course.

I'll give this a shot. Not in the mood for revising history so let's just have the original 82 unique characters we already have.

84. Dixie Kong (DK)
85. Tingle (Zelda)
86. EMMI (Metroid)
87. Master Chief (Halo)
88. Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden)
89. Bandana Dee (Kirby)

97. Foreman Spike (Retro)
98. Noah/Mio (Xenoblade)

There was a problem fetching the tweet
Who would you choose?

My picks would be: (having 7 fighters)
  1. Bandana Dee (Kirby needs more than just representation from Sakurai's games)
  2. Crash Bandicoot (Popular third party request)
  3. Dixie Kong (The next one after K. Rool)
  4. Amaterasu (More quadruped animal fighters)
  5. Toxtricity (Pokémon didn't get a Gen 8 rep during Smash's DLC)
  6. Dr. Eggman (Sonic needs a villain rep)
  7. Master Chief (Pretty iconic to finish with)

Who would you choose?

My picks would be: (having 7 fighters)
  1. Bandana Dee (Kirby needs more than just representation from Sakurai's games)
  2. Crash Bandicoot (Popular third party request)
  3. Dixie Kong (The next one after K. Rool)
  4. Amaterasu (More quadruped animal fighters)
  5. Toxtricity (Pokémon didn't get a Gen 8 rep during Smash's DLC)
  6. Dr. Eggman (Sonic needs a villain rep)
  7. Master Chief (Pretty iconic to finish with)
1. Manny Calavera
2. Ceruledge and Armarouge
3. The dog dude from Puyo Puyo Tetris
4. BJ Blazkowics
5. Bandana Dee
6. Hyperdimension Neptunia character
7. Taffy (the Candy Crush kid)

Anyway, Full Motion Video deserves representation

If I'm picking purely from my own personal bias:
  1. Bandana Waddle Dee
  2. Karate Joe
  3. Octoling
  4. Crono
  5. Dr. Eggman
  6. Phoenix Wright
If I'm picking what I think is realistic and best for the game:
  1. Octoling
  2. Impa (or literally anyone from BOTW/TOTK)
  3. Dr. Eggman
  4. Rayman
  5. Neku
  6. Waluigi

I went for trying to be somewhat realistic.

If there's a FP3, presumably the prior content can be reevaluated, as this was decided afterwards. So two promo additions, one fan demand, two big series/characters, and one mid-size series/character. I thought Capcom was due for another character, as well as a new company (to the roster).

No non-promo first-parties (which include series that don't usually get promo additions), as that doesn't seem to be what they opt for.

1. Akira Howard
2. Jill Valentine
3. Gholdengo (I just don't want another starter)
4. Geno
5. Ryu Hayabusa
6. Master Chief

In theory they may opt for Alear or Noah/Mio, but since both those series already got promotional additions via DLC, I reasoned another from either may be deprioritized and went for Pokemon and AC.

In my personal pass, I think the only crossover would be Chief.
