One thing I find frustrating is the notion that a game is going to sell anyways just on name alone and the actual quality of the game doesn’t matter. I see this a lot from Smash fans who say the game is going to sell just as well even if half the roster is cut just because it’s Smash. Pokémon proves that’s not exactly wrong but it feels like a disservice to the things people actually like about the games. It’s not just the roster. I feel like that mindset is what leads to developers half-assing their games because they know people will buy it anyways. We’ve known Sakurai long enough to know that he doesn’t half-ass anything but it’s the principle that bothers me.

As long the game can grab the attention of us players, it eventually becomes accepted despite the roster being cut or remain the same. Sure, there will be tention from the reveal to the first year or months, but that is how the game usually goes after its release.

3. New Kirby game (Remake, Spin-off, whichever)
4. Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War....is being saved for Switch 2's launch.
5. New indie games.
6. New third-party games.
7. Hope #1: The third-party surprise rumored to "spark conversations" is a Microsoft entry of some kind.
8. Hope #2: Mole Mania remake.

Even though we probably won’t get anything in this Direct specifically related to Smash, I hope it at least gives us something new to talk about for speculation, like a revival of a classic franchise that might help a character’s chances or a brand new game.

I haven’t really been following any leaks or rumors so I can’t add much to the predictions but most of what I’m seeing here seems reasonable. I don’t really expect a huge, ambitious, previously unannounced game here because they’d likely save that for next week’s Direct. I’m guessing the main focus here will be Metroid Prime 4 and the rest will be much smaller titles.

Here's my setup for watching both Directs:

• Direct on my computer w/o sound
• Direct on my phone w/bluetooth headphones so I can hear the Direct from another device

My mom's going to be on a call during the Direct and I don't have any working wired headphones for my computer, so this is my next best thing.

Sakurai doesn't seem like the type to go stoke the fire for no reason. Some of the fanbase alleges he does this often, but he really doesn't. He doesn't usually comment on Directs so him doing so seems conspicuous to me.

Now, people going SMASH 6 REVEAL?! is some craziness, but something related to Sakurai being there... seems plausible to me.

Guess he's not the trolling type like people thought he was.

Anyway…the only prediction I'll make is more third-party games, because that's pretty much what we can all expect, right? Also, Nintendo isn't exactly an open book. They defy our expectations on an almost regular basis, so it might be impossible to predict…anything Nintendo does.

• Fire Emblem Echoes: The Holy War - July 2025.
• A final reminder for the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct coming next week.

I would not be surprised to see Splatoon 1 or New Super Mario Bros. Wii get HD ports announced, but I think they’ll come later in the year.

Virtual Cards could be useful but it’s probably for Nintendo to prepare for a fully digital console if it ever happens such as for the Switch 3.
