I mean...the medium was absolutely, 100% in your control, by definition. He doesn't arbitrarily count as a video game character just because you opted to make a web comic instead due to lack of coding skills. That just means you made a web comic character.
HIS NAME IS VIDEOGAME-MAN dude you also (probably) know nothing about how much torture it is to sit on ideas for a long time i had to release it for my sanitys sake!
There IS Live Bars, Special Attack Bars, A World Map, Enemys, Bosses and tons of other Videogamey Stuff in there!

Hes Either a playground character, a multimedia Character or a videogame character! Calling him a Webbcomic character is like the most inacurate description!

And Honestly HOW TF do you expect me to do a decent Videogame alone if even someone as talented as Toby Fox needed help!

So how does anyone feel about visual novel characters like Okabe from Steins;Gate’s eligibility for Smash? Does that count enough as a game to qualify or should it be limited to more traditional games?

I don't think VNs are an issue so long as something can be done moveset wise.

nothing about how much torture it is to sit on ideas for a long time i had to release it for my sanitys sake!
I'm pretty sure everyone here has some good idea they don't have the time, skills or effort to make a reality.

But it's not fair to pretend a current idea is something it isn't.

Until your characters have their own video game, calling them video game characters is dishonest.

I mean I dunno man if there’s a book that has an in-universe video game mascot that doesn’t then make that fictional character an actual video game mascot.

I’m not trying to pick on you but I’m just saying, calling your character something like Lord Video, Duke of Games doesn’t automatically mean they qualify for Smash. They’ve gotta actually originate from a video game.

I swear Oracle Link already asked this question a long time ago and you answered similarly.

We have a perfect example.

Wreck-It Ralph.

In-universe, he's a video game character because the media is centered around the concept of an arcade and the video game characters within the arcade cabinets.

Out of universe, he's a film character because the media he is supposed to represent is an animated film.

It may be true that the in-universe arcade game he comes from was de-fictionalized and made a real arcade game prior to the film, but it's specifically to promote said film.

...Isn't his name VideoSPIEL-Man which is why he's abbreviated as VSM?

That aside, if he has a webcomic, I don't get how calling him a webcomic character is inaccurate when you're calling him a video game character with no video game.

I have characters I'd like to center a video game around too, but I'm holding off until hopefully I can do something with them in the future lol

Like what, they cast spells with martial arts?
Sounds a bit like Avatar (the Nickelodeon series not the blue people). :4pacman:
Not quite.

But if I explained I'd derail the thread further.

So, do you think Silent Hill will ever be considered for a character?

I don’t think Smash has a dedicated horror character, does it? Castlevania is horror themed but I wouldn’t necessarily call it a straight up horror series.

If they felt like representing the genre, someone like Pyramid Head could be interesting. There’s also other series they could pull from like Resident Evil.

I don't want to quote Kai The Hedgefox, but characters from CLANNAD (and other Key VNs) or the cast from the When They Cry series should only need Mii Costumes or Spirits at the very least.

Pyramid Head would be a great AT, but I doubt anything becoming playable compared to all of the other Konami options.

Not yet.

Yeah like by this logic Kirito from Sword art online would count as a video game character lol.

Besides like Puzzle, horror and music games, Visual novels are the only genre not represented yet in smash by a playable character and I think that’s unfortunate. I have been in support of a few of them like Monokuma from Danganronpa, Ayumi Tachibana and Saber from Fate etc. So anyway yeah I be cool with a Steins gate character too or another visual novel character in general for sure.

I mean if we're going to entertain characters from our own personal stories and works...

Then boy do I have some pitches for all y'all.

How do y'all feel about sorcerers?
Same here. My brother and I have been working on a story for an RPG game since we were kids. We’ve got a ton of character art and backstories and my brother’s already written the prologue and a few other sections as well as made the opening are in RPG Maker. No enemies or combat yet but just an area you can walk around in. It’s a ton of work so I doubt we’ll ever actually finish but it’s a fun side hobby.

Honestly "How would your OCs play in Smash" would be a fun thread. Probably not very on-topic here unless we've actually put our characters in an officially released video game, but I think we could squeeze some good discussions out of a separate thread.

(Would such a thing be allowed? It's a big forum so I'm sure we can find a category for a thread like that...)

I’d totally be down for a thread like that. It could be a lot of fun talking about our characters but since the game doesn’t exist yet, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to talk much about it in this topic.

I posted my own art thread in the General Social - Art and Creativity section so maybe that would be a good section for a thread like that. It doesn’t seem like there’s a ton of activity in that section but maybe an interactive topic like that could help.

On one hand I 100% agree that, objectively, Tom Nook should be next in line for Animal Crossing.

Subjectively, though, it should absolutely be K.K. Slider. Let him be the game's I-no or Ember McLain equivalent. Which also allows for Gholdengo to have the money gimmick instead.
If you're doing Smash I-no, Barbara is right there.

Requesting permission to discuss a possible Captain N reboot. Specifically a VIDEO GAME reboot... ;)
It's kind of a pity that Eternal Darkness and Alexandra Roivas is so downplayed these days because she (or possibly Pious Augustus) could make for a great first party horror character. Between the weapons as basic/smash attacks and spells as specials, there's a lot that could be done concept wise.
Hopefully we'll get lucky and it gets added to the list of Gamecube games Nintendo wants to remake. At least then we'd know they're at least interested in the IP.

For what it's worth, I'm glad that Eternal Darkness as a whole still has any shot for Smash Bros. Heaven knows that, unless there's a major change on the issue, poor Geist doesn't seem like it'll get even THAT...

I'm still nominating Pauline to be our first musician (that fights with music).
You know, between all of this and the earlier 4th paty talk, I'm kind of curious... is Love Live eligible for Smash Bros.? I'm pretty sure The IdolM@ster is possible (Unlikely as all get-out, but still possible). But Love Live... it's been a long while since I've looked into the series, so I forgot what it started off as...
